Locals were strolling in for sandwiches and salads. Highly recommend going with the delicious Portuguese styled bread either on the side or sandwiches. Below are some of the Smartwich team which includes also includes a nephew and and uncle / founder.. This is a family business with the founder is a brother of one of the top local Italian bakeries in Nassau. The bakery also provided the start up space originally in Hicksville during the incubator phase. It makes perfect sense when you have a delicious warm crispy Portuguese roll for the sandwiches. This talented brother had many years in the food industry in Portugal and is a fan of their crispy styled bread/rolls. They are now made right here. Sandwiches are nicely made, fresh, flavorful and a step above the generic sandwich places. Elevated flavors and dressed with a nice vinaigrette. Lots of choices. We finally made it to Smartwich in Syosset today. As we walked in, we were greeted by the chef himself, who welcomed us and asked if it was our first visit. He shared some insights about his history and the menu. The young man at the register encouraged us to try the sandwiches, even if we thought we wouldn't like them. He assured us that they would make an incredible sandwich. We ordered four sandwiches: the octopus, roast beef, turkey, and sausage. Each sandwich was unique and delicious. The combinations were unexpected yet perfectly executed, creating an unforgettable dining experience. I couldn't resist trying the Portuguese custard tarts. They were served warm straight from the oven, with a creamy, flaky texture that made them the best custard tart I've ever tasted. It was a pleasure to meet the chef and witness his incredible energy radiating not only through his food but also in his beautiful new restaurant. We can't wait to return and try the flatbread pizzas, which looked equally tempting. Next time, we'll remember to pre-order our tarts, as they sell out quickly, and grab a few loaves of bread to take home. I don't know why it took me so long to get to the new SmartWich location (who am I kidding? It's called life ), but boy am I glad I made it there today! Stunning doesn't even begin to cover it. Beautiful, colorful, bright, open, cheerful, and brand spanking new with the same delicious smartwich's we've all come to love. The photos of Chef Guerrieri's hand-painted murals don't do them justice. Seeing them in person is something special. It was also great seeing Chef, meeting his partner and nephew Sal (from Red Volpe in Bethpage), and being welcomed by Zion, whose friendly personality and efficiency made the experience even better. And let's talk about lunch. Chef's margarita pizza smartwich with caramelized onions absolutely knocked it out of the park. A little taste of Italy right here in Syosset. (Plus the two roast beef SmartWich's I took home for the family for later!) Chef has also expanded the menu with so many wonderful new additions. From fresh smoothies and juices to beautiful salads and other new offerings, there's truly something for everyone. It gives you even more reasons to stop in, whether you're looking for a quick bite, a healthy option, or one of the creative specials Chef is known for. I also got to sample their homemade panna cotta. Full disclosure, I'm usually not a panna cotta fan. But this one? OMG. Decided to make a little side quest when I passed by this place, I was intrigued my the name and wanted to see what they had going on. I'm so glad that I did. Was immediately greeted when walking in by, I find out later, Chef Guerrieri. Checked out the menu to see the options and landed on the S'wich Pizza Espinosa and the chickpea salad. For the Espinosa, subbed the prosciutto for chicken. When both ordered landed on my plate the explosion of flavor, good crunch and a healthy amount made this foodie very happy. Went out on a whim and stopped at this sandwich shop because the name intrigued me. So glad I did stop in because the food was amazing! I had a flatbread pizza and it was so good and I can tell it was made with all fresh ingredients. The chickpea salad was very refreshing as well! I love how the walls inside told the story of the head chef and his journey from Napoli to New York to Lisbon back to New York, the story was told through a beautiful mural. I had to give this place another try, and I am glad that I did. I ordered the sardine (fresh) sandwich, and it was phenomenal. The homemade Portuguese bread had a crispy exterior and a soft and warm interior. The sandwich itself was an explosion of flavors that I love: salty, briny and fresh, and the portion was huge. The condiments were very good and well balanced. I will come again soon to try another one of the Chef's sandwich creations. The Cold (but without ice) Bay Leaf Tea was an instant favorite of mine. The Chef was in the store and recommended it because it has many health benefits, including regulating blood sugar levels and reducing cholesterol and blood pressure. Chef Michael Guerrieri is back with a bang! Only this time, it's in Hicksville, Long Island. Luckily, I had the pleasure of dining here twice in the last week and tried a handful of his offerings. Let's just say that you will likely not be disappointed with whatever you order, but read on for my favorites. First of all, I have to mention the amazing bread, which is always the most important part of any good sandwich. Chef Michael scoops out some of the middle, and then toasted them perfectly. Slightly crunchy crust, while fluffy and airy on the inside. Just right. Now onto what's between the bread. SQUASH BLOSSOM (8/10) - The overall flavors of the sandwich were great, but I do wish that the fried squash blossom was crispier. The bacon bits adds a nice smoky and savory note to the otherwise vegetarian dish. SARDINES (8/10) - Imported directly from Portugal and pickled in house, these sardines are delicious, especially paired with pickled onions and pickled tomatoes. The touch of aromatic olive oil completes the package. SAUSAGE (10/10) - Wowza! This sandwich was magnificent! The sausage crumble was soooooo flavorful. Slight bitterness of kale somehow matched amazingly. However, please ask for Calabrian chili oil. Add some to each bite and it will be taken to the next level. I will be back for this bite for sure. OMELETTE (7/10) - I enjoyed this sandwich, but it was relatively light in flavor. The vinaigrette was not noticeable and I would have liked more. When I added a little rosemary olive oil to the mix, the taste was elevated. ROAST BEEF (6/10) - This was one of their most popular sandwiches. However, I was not a big fan. The deli meat was tender, but felt too heavily processed. Also, the sweetness of the relish turned me off completely. OCTOPUS (8/10) - I know it's expensive, but I need to feel more of that tenderly cooked octopus in each bite. The vinegary salad paired well. Hard to complain, but next time, I'll ask for double meat. Lol TUNA (6/10) - This was not bad, but so much large chunks of celery. It felt more like tuna was the co-star highlighting the veggie sandwich. Obviously, with all the celery, there was a nice crunch to the texture, but I would have preference more tuna. PASTEL DE NATA (10/10) - I had my fair share of these delicious little tarts from different parts of the world. These were as good as any I have tasted. Creamy custard with a flaky crust. What's not to love? Chef Michael is one of the most friendliest owners I have ever met. He is proud of his country (Portugal), his products, and wants to share it with everyone. We had a wonderful time listening to his stories and enjoyed our visits very much. He told me that there are plans to open up more towards the west. Stopped by on a random Saturday afternoon to try this hidden gem out. We got the turkey sandwich (we originally wanted the chicken put the pastrami paste has pork in it) and it was delish! I really enjoyed the bread, it was super fresh & the veggies paired with the turkey complimented each other so well. The sandwich itself is pretty large, you can probably split it with someone else. I guess just one minus star because the guy making our sandwich didn't change gloves; he had a wet towel and wringed it out and then touched the bread/made the sandwich. Slight change of cross contamination with chemicals here, it didn't bother me but it might bother other customers. As a strict vegetarian/mostly vegan, a sandwich shop will never be my home away from home, but given the vibe and enthusiasm inside this place ALONE, I almost want to go back, after 40 years, to eating meat. Well...not really, but you get my gist. For my maiden voyage to Smartwich of Syosset, I went with the Mozzarella Smartwich and (sorry, Chef Michael) removed the cheese. Still, it was really tasty and really filling. The toasted Portuguese bread made it really rock. I also tried, for the first time ever, Bay Leaf Iced Tea, which sounded like a disgusting concept when I read the label, but ended up being really delicious. I highly recommend giving it a try. So many places have tried and failed at this location, but I really think Smartwich is going to make it. My friends who, unknowing to me, had been going to the old Hicksville location for years rave about it all the time, so my guess is that Smartwich's meaty items are as outstanding as what I had. A friend of mine was raving about Smartwich so we decided to go together to check this place out for lunch recently on a weekend. The place is housed inside of Francesco's bakery, and I got there around 12. The young man working behind the counter seemed pleasant. The place itself is just a small stall, but there are a few tables inside so you can dine in if you want. From the reviews I saw, I decided that getting the roast beef sandwich ($13) would be a good choice for a first timer. They also have some drinks and I ended up getting a barley tea ($2.50). Total cost of the meal was about $16.86 with cash payment. There is a small credit card fee so be aware if you are planning to pay by card. There are a lot of good things to say about the sandwich. First off, I was pretty impressed by how big the sandwich was. If you're not that hungry, I think you could get two meals out of it. Secondly, the bread quality really stood out. It seemed really fresh and fairly crunchy; excellent. The roast beef was pretty tasty and they put some sweet peppers in there as well. Everything seemed really balanced about the sandwich and it came together so well. I was going to just eat half, but I ended up wolfing the whole thing down cause it was so tasty. The barly tea was pretty good. It's not a super strong or sweet flavor, but pretty light and refreshing. All in all, the meal was excellent. The sandwich definitely feels better quality and higher end than most other sandwiches you can get. I would give Smartwich 3 stars for the present moment. My meal was excellent but I feel like the prices are a tad high. Not egregiously overpriced, but slightly so. If the sandwich was between $10-11 after tax and if the barley tea was $1.50 or lower after tax I would give out an additional star. Smartwich -- What a truly special place! I can't say anything new here that hasn't already been said. Each sandwich is its own unique creation, on delicious freshly baked Portuguese bread. Smartwiches are also best eaten when they are hot and fresh, so I personally wouldn't buy them unless I could eat it right away! I like all of the sandwiches here, but my favorite might be the sausage. I can't describe exactly why, and I don't even typically like sausage, but it's just pure umami deliciousness. I also like their specials that have come and gone, such as squash blossom, and pizza! The Chef is also very friendly and sociable, making the whole experience a great one. Wow! The sandwiches are amazing! First, the bread is a perfect bread - crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. I could eat this bread every day. Onto the fillings. I can't quite decide whether the sardine or the octopus is my favorite. I think I will have to go with the sardine sandwich. The sardines are nicely marinated and lemony and delicious. When I went to get my sandwich, the chef showed me a video how he marinated them. They are perfection. The octopus sandwich was also great. The octopus was perfectly tender and juicy. I don't like to write a review after only 1 visit. But sometimes an experience deserves instant adoration. One of my companies yards is 2 blocks away. So I've passed by often. I usually get off late & hit up Francesco's for some pastries. Smartwich is usually closed but Chef Michael let me in on a tip. Order online and ask for a later pick up time and they will hold the sandwich in the back for you. Awesome! Now, the Long Island food scene has gotten so phenomenal that I have not had to return to the city for a great meal in five years and this sandwich shop (Chef Michael corrected me..it's a Smartwich hahaha) is one of the reasons why there is no need to travel to NYC for great food. Fresh ingredients. The bread not like a semolina bread, or a sourdough, which has a flavor all its own. The Portuguese roll is warm and crusty with a light flavor that allows the ingredients that it will be stuffed with to shine. And shine it did. Chef MICHAEL gave me a rundown of what his sandwiches have to offer but for an omnivore like me it is hard to make a decision when everything looks and sounds delicious Chef Michael recommended his latest creation of roasted artichoke hearts with burnt pepperoni. **OUTSTANDING ARTISAN SANDWICHES ** **FAST AND FRIENDLY SERVICE ** OVERVIEW: The other day, a few of us were talking about why sandwich shops like Subway and Blimpie, are so darn awful. One person, mentioned the pre-sliced, sweaty-looking cold cuts, and phoney tuna. Next, someone brought up the not-so-fresh, wilted toppings. But then I added, that one of the most important aspects of a hero sandwich is the bread. And at these places, it's just so mushy, and fake-tasting. Even worse, it smells weirdly artificial. And that foul, artificial bread smell is the first thing that hits your nose when you walk into one of these places. "Hell", I said, "it's almost like the Pillsbury Dough Boy farted right in your face". But at Smartwich, each sandwich starts off with a large, freshly baked Portuguese bread that's crispy on the outside, and soft but substantial on the inside. Even more, before each sandwich is made, the bread is toasted in a special oven, so the end result is a fantastic crunch every time you take a bite. And regular cold cuts? Forgedaboudit! All the meats here, like the roast beef, turkey, and chicken are freshly roasted, and then sliced. And of course all the seafood, such as the, tuna, octopus, and sardines are made fresh and marinated for the best possible taste. In addition, I also must mention the feeling of freshness you experience when tasting the vegetables, herbs, and condiments used in each sandwich. Also, the chef and Nick, his assistant, seem to genually care about each customer, and are always happy to say hello and take your order. And then, after placing your order, the sandwiches are always ready quickly, even when it's a busy time of day. The shop occupies a small portion of Fancesco's Bakery. It's decorated in a straight foward way, advertising the different sandwich options. And there are two small tables available for eating-in, though most of the business here is grab and go. PARTING THOUGHTS: Chef Guerrieri is an accomplished sandwich artisan, who owned two popular specialty sandwich shops in Manhattan - until the Rona forced him to close. But now, luckily for us, he's back in action in Hicksville. And I have to say that, whenever I have the pleasure of eating a sandwich here, I'm hit with this special feeling, that I am experiencing something exceptional. And this is a rare occurrence indeed, with perhaps the Banh Mi sandwiches at Ha Long Bay in New Hyde Park, or Joju in Elmhurst giving me this same type of feeling. So the bottom line is, if you're in the Hicksville area, and looking for a delicious sandwich - you'd have to be an idiot, to go anywhere other than Smartwich. Seriously. read more

The smartwich shop is located inside Francesco's bakery and while the parking lot is huge, it is at a very busy intersection so BE CAREFUL when pulling and out. Quite scary. Now back to my sandwich, I tried the tuna fish and it was made in olive oil, just like my grandma made it and was so unbelievably delicious. Mike offered me this spicy almost olive oil and it was a perfect addition to have my sandwich get taken to the next level. I totally forgot the name of it but it was delicious. The 5 star reviews are truly real. We had the pleasure to try the pastel de nata when one our friends brought it to a gathering. I have been thinking about them and finally got a free Saturday morning to got see if we can score some (it goes fast). It is located within Francesca Bakery, so one may miss it. We walked in and saw an empty case, feeling very disappointed that maybe they didn't have any or it was too early (it was around 11am). Then Mike came out to introduce himself, where he's from, and then his passion about each and every sandwich. LOVE IT! If I could, I would order every sandwich to try. My husband and I ended up trying the Octopus and the Bacon. Every ingredient in the sandwiches pairs perfectly with each other. The octopus was flown in from Portugal and was so tender. Everything was so fresh. I would say that a touch of vinegar would blow it over the top, but that's me. Bacon is good, but you haven't had mind blowing until you try Mike's! It was an explosion of the most perfect harmony of flavors. Yes, that is a yogurt sauce in there and not mayo. That bread though! It's so good! You know what makes a good sandwich is that the bread outside is crunchy but soft inside to hold all the yummy ingredients. Then Mike packed us 12 pastel de nata for us to heat up at home. He even gave me a free one hot out of the oven for the amazing visit. It taste like a creme brulee in filo dough. It was smooth and creamy, done right! We will definitely be back to try the others.
