I wish there was a Smithfield's near my house! There's not, so any time we travel and there's a Smithfield's near by its a must stop for us. Ate dinner here 10/20/18. Of all the "fast food" chicken places, Smithfield's is my favorite. KFC, Bojangles, Popeye's, Zaxby's and the rest doesn't even come close! Their chicken is crispy and well seasoned and the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. Its not greasy at all because if it was we would not eat here. Wife and both got the chicken snack, her dark and I white, which is 2 pieces of chicken with a side. I always get the brunswick stew. The eastern NC vinegar dip on the table compliments both the chicken and the stew. Service at this Smithfield's was some of the best in the fast food world. With drinks and tax bill came to just a little over $15 for the two of us which is a bargain for food and service this good. read more

I'm from California and ate at a Smithfield's the last time I was in southern NC years ago and still remembered how much I enjoyed the vinegar-based style bar-b-q so wanted to try it again and am so glad I did. I felt like a glutton but my friends said I should try it all, so I did. The pork was moist and flavorful, as was the chicken with the rib dipping sauce. The baked beans were excellent and the hush puppies the best! Topped it off by taking a banana pudding for a treat the next day which was so yummy. The food was great, but even better was the service; it was outstanding and something you would expect at an expensive five-star upscale establishment. The manager and his staff couldn't have been nicer and kept checking to see how we were doing and whether we needed anything. We pulled into Smithfield's with our family, 14 of us. As I'm trying to figure out how to fit in what everyone wants, the girl behind the counter say, "let me help you with that". She asks how many we have, how many are kids... then figures the whole thing out. Chicken fingers for the kids, fries, cole slaw, plenty of tea.... and she got it just right for us. I wish I had gotten her name. Glasses, black hair.... if she helps you, you'll have no worries. And one of the nicest people I've met in awhile. The food was good as it always is there. What really stood out for us tonight was the service. Where can you go that is considered fast food and get such attention? No where but here. Stop in and have some chicken. The food is pretty good, about all I can really say that would be considered a positive. They'll work you extremely long hours, along with working you to the bone, just to want more of the same tomorrow. I've noticed throughout the years (through ads promoting employment) their turnover rate must be fairly high I'd assume, but can't be for certain. read more

Don't normally post on these but the past 6-7 times that we've gotten take-out food from this location they never put, napkins, forks, knives, spoons, and straws in the bag. I don't understand why they don't at least give silverware to the people that order things like Brunswick stew, cold slaw, and potatoes salad to go. Foods not terrible though. First off as being someone not from North Carolina, I feel like I need to explain something. Bar-B-Q is pulled pork. So I have made my own Eastern North Carolina pulled pork, and everyone told me that I needed to try Smithfield's, and that it s the best. After waiting a long time (they are only in NC) to try it. It was REALLY, REALLY good, but I think my pulled pork is better (you may think I am biased, but not really). Don't get me wrongs it's close, really good, and I would not hesitate to go back. Dear dear Smithfields Market Street, you all were the only location for miles around when I grew up in Wilm. in the 90s. I have always been a fan of Smithfields. It is a "I have to have" meal each time I am there until my recent visit on Sat 7/17. I ordered the Tailgate special and waited in the pull up line in front of the building. Of course I never mind the wait because it is always hot and fresh. I try the hushpuppies and immediately notice they did not have the true signature taste, not sure if the sweetness or onion flavor was missing but it was not the norm. Ok once I get back to Castle Hayne, we open the packages and the 8 piece Tailgate is missing the drumsticks, hello 6 piece. I chalk it too they were busy and move on. The coleslaw, had HUGE slices of unchopped cabbage. 3 strikes. I have witnessed this location go down on consistency of providing quality food across the years, and never did a review but sometimes you have to let the management know. I still love Smithfields but will just travel a bit further out to the location off College Rd or the location off I40 in Warsaw before getting to Wilmington. read more

As soon as I walked in in was greeted with a smiling hello. The young man taking my order was patient and confident. As I looked around I saw the tables being cleaned and straightened. As I got my food which was delivered to me then asked if I need anything else I knew I made a good choice. The chicken crunch had so much flavor and the meat moist and tasty. The potato salad has a nice relish taste to it that cuts the chicken oil down. I was then approached again to see how my food was and if I need anything again. I lived in NC for 6 years, but it was only in my last year of living there that I finally experienced Smithfield's. I can't believe my friends in NC let me go so long living without it in my life. Now that I don't live in NC, I only get to visit occasionally when I'm in range. Their fried chicken is the best in the world that I've ever had, hands down. Change my mind. Because I like a variety, I usually get the combo plate which comes with chicken (light or dark meat, your choice) and BBQ with two sides of your choice. I highly recommend the slaw and the potato salad. My wife loves their baked beans, and I think they're good for sure, but I usually go with the other two. What really sets Smithfield's apart is their vinegar-based hot sauce. I can't even begin to explain how delicious it is, I put it on everything I order there. This visit we also got the shrimp snack to share, so good. To top it off they offer banana pudding and pecan pie for dessert, I most often choose the banana pudding, it's a great way to end the meal. Being from California, I can't make the claim that this is the best East Carolina BBQ around, but it's some of the best BBQ I've had anywhere. East Carolina style BBQ is slow cooked pork with NO BBQ sauce and only a mild vinegar based moistening agent, occasionally with some peppers added to it to give it just the slightest kick. I had the pulled pork combo plate with baked beans and Brunswick stew. It was a good portion and along with a sweet tea, only set me back $11.00. The food was incredibly flavorful and fresh. The ambiance is nice and there's some really cool wall decor of classic movie posters and such. If they opened one in Los Angeles and the food quality was the same, I'd be there 2 or 3 times a week! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for really good East Carolina style BBQ. read more

Hello fellow yelpers this review is for the Smithfield Barbecue in Wilmington North Carolina, the gf is from north Carolina and she wanted some bbq as out west there is little to none decent bbq joints so I agreed as I haven't been east, but I do have to say their chicken and tea hit the spot we ordered a family meal as we needed to take some to a family member, it was still warm and the tea was even warmer nothing a little ice couldn't fix their sauce is vinegar-based so if that's the case you like I suggest you get it by the tub. Really good all around well worth the money, on a side note they just ed opened when we got there and it was really busy which in my book is always a good sign. read more

Really nice staff and a real family type feel to the atmosphere. As noted, they specialize in Chicken and Bar-B-Q. For me, I think they just specialize in Chicken, as the BBQ isn't the best I have ever had (but probably better than most in town). The chicken is off the chain good though! Now the pricing can be tricky, because you don't really get your money worth unless you order a combo platter. Honestly, I defy a normal human to eat an entire dark meat/bbq combo with fries, baked beans, and corn puppies. It is the best value on the board. The regular bbq meals aren't really worth it in my opinion. The banana pudding is good and I hear the sweet tea is even better. Great service and friendly people. read more
