I have many complaints about this so called restaurant... it all started when walking in the door. They weren't very busy. And definitely not a full house. We waited over 5 mins to be seated and was standing while 3 or more servers looked at my husband and I and kept walking. They could have easily sat us. This was our first time here so we didn't know to wait or to seat ourselves. Once we were sat the host didn't say anything or who our server would be. She just sat down the menus and walked away. Waiting for food didn't take long but it was cold. Fried pickles are not supposed to be cold. And my side salad was weak! It had more carrots and toppings than lettuce. I also asked for no tomatoes, and guess what came on the salad?! My husband's jalapeño burger was something made from dairy queen. He didn't even eat half! It'll go to the dogs later. Pretty good ol American food. They have a Cajun chicken basket that's awesome. It's sort of like hot wing sauce on chicken. You won't be worried about ordering anything and not liking it. They've got your fried pickles, beer, burgers, fried fish. You can't go wrong. read more

Delicious homestyle food! The pickles were fried to perfection and the ranch dip was delicious!!! Kids had pasta (no sauce) and a grilled cheese sandwich. Both cleaned their plates!! We ordered the jalapeño cheeseburger and chicken salad on a croissant. Both were extremely good and the fries had just the right crunch!! The best part of the meal was our waitress. The kids are practicing asking for things themselves and she was extremely sweet and patient as she waited for them to order or ask for refills. She buzzed around the restaurant taking care of all her tables with a smile on her face and lots of good heartfelt laughs. Wish we lived closer so we could be regulars!! read more

Good comfort food and reasonably priced! I wasn't expecting much when visiting Angleton, but this place certainly makes you smile. Wait staff was pleasant but not entirely perfect (didn't know which beers were available) if that really matters to you. It doesn't for me, as they refilled my soda when needed. I had the chicken fried chicken with fries and a side salad. The salad was fast food grade, especially the cheap iceburg lettuce. Honestly, I'd pay a little more for better greens in the salad. I've been here twice and both times have been delicious. We tried the fried shrimp, chicken parmigiana and the biggest chicken fried steak ever. Moderately priced quality food. Our party of three was seated promptly, attended to well, and served hot food relatively quickly. My chicken strip basket came with a healthy serving of hand-breaded strips and a pile of fries. The others in my party raced about their chicken salad and chicken sad sandwich. Good stuff. I am worried that this restaurant gets overlooked, it sits somewhat back from the main road. On a recent visit from MA, my husband and I discovered this place and it was great !!!!! Normally I spend fifteen hours scouring Yelp for the perfect restaurant, but it has been a long day and we settled on this joint. The reviews were mostly positive on Yelp, save the one or two because of the service. I won't say that the food was stellar, but it was good. The shrimp were decent, and the fries were your standard frozen variety, but there are so few establishments that put the effort into great spuds. However, the poor reviews regarding slow service were spot on. The service wasn't bad, it was just painfully slow. All in all, you could do worse. This is a decent place for a meal. read more

Just not what it used to be. I"m a local and remember when both sides of the Smithart's factions had really good places to eat. Unfortunately this location just seems to slide further and further downhill. We ate there last Sunday after church - got there around 11:30. We were seated promptly, the restaurant was maybe 1/3 full. 5 years ago there would have been a 15 minute wait to get a table. The waitress was fine, came to the table in a timely manner. I ordered ice water with lemon - when my drink was brought out I was informed that the restaurant was out of lemons. Some BS excuse about how expensive lemons are was given. I ordered a burger, because that is what Smithart's was built on - burgers. A few minutes later the waitress came out and informed the that they were out of hamburger buns. THIS IS A BURGER JOINT! How do you let yourself run out of buns, especially at 11:30 on a Sunday morning when the church crowd is about to hit? Burger came on Texas Toast, and was just OK - patty was overworked and didn't have much for seasoning. The onion rings, which have always been good here, were obviously a frozen Cisco type instead of the hand made ones they used to have. Under cooked to boot. Not good at all. The bathrooms were filthy as well. Trash in the stall was full, trash by the sink was full, toilet paper on the floor and the toilet needed a pressure washer. It's obvious they didn't even clean up from the previous night. I'm a dude and when I notice the bathrooms, that tells you something. Buc-Ee's is about a mile down the road, go there to see what a good clean public restroom should be. Bottom line - it's unfortunate because it used to be a good place to eat, but I can't say much about it anymore. Angleton doesn't have a whole lot of choices for dining as it is and it seems like one less now. The owners of this restaurant have a lot of ground to make up and need to get their act and QC together. I'll be surprised if they are around in another year at this rate. Wow. I don't really know where to start, so I will pro and con it. Pros- the waitress was attentive and very pleasant. The iced tea was pretty good. The pre frozen fried shrimp was tasty. Cons- the people at the front had me standing waiting to be seated for a few minutes while they stood next to me and talked about their Christmas tree. I ordered the surf and turf, and the steak was probably frozen, microwaved, and then thrown on a grill. It had no seasoning, in fact I added salt (which I never do) and it still fell flat. It was a bit over cooked in the middle, probably due to being nuked. They served on a lettuce leaf....... It was preceded by a salad, which I ordered with ranch. It was more like a small bowl of ranch, with spring mix in it, home made ranch, but too much of it. If you need that much ranch to choke down a salad, just get the onion rings. The steak came with a choice of potatoes. I chose mashed. They were mashed... At some point... In a factory just before being dried and put into a box to be shipped to stores so people that can't cook can still have white goop on their plate. They didn't even try to season it, maybe with extra water... Frozen veggie mix, ugh. A slice of garlic French bread, toasted on a pan that was not cleaned properly, as it tasted like a funky dish towel. I was really excited about the garlic bread. Then it made me sad. The waitress asked if the meal was OK quite a few times, leading me to believe that she knew it was not. I never send food back though, especially to a kitchen that is capable of producing a dish where nothing was even close to OK. read more

Chicken Fried Steak is my favorite food on Planet Earth but I have a hard time finding it prepared the way I like it. That is not an issue here. Its always tender with just the right amount of breading. You get a huge CFS that is breaded, not a huge plate of breading with a little CFS hiding in the middle. Nothing angers me more than to have my mouth set on CFS, mashed potatoes and gravy then see they serve it with french fries. That is not an issue at Smithhart's, they serve fresh, homestyle mashed potatoes! One dinner is more than my husband and myself can eat together, the steak is HUGE and covers the whole platter. They will split the steak, at no additional charge, onto two plates and serve each plate with the normal sides. Even splitting it between the two of us, we still carry home a to go box that contains a full meal. My only complaint is they sometimes season with too much garlic and it will be somewhat overpowering but never so strong its off putting. We always sit in the bar area because of the television. Its "enclosed" and more relaxed, a little more noisy and fun and because it is by the waiter's drink station and kitchen entrance the service is always excellent. They also serve large groups. We had a party there a couple of years ago with around 30 people. They accommodated our large group very well. All meals came out at the same time, we had a waitress assigned to us and she provided excellent service making everyone feel satiated and good about the experience. Nothing is more frustrating that walking out of a large event with enough frustration to cause heartburn. That was definitely not the case. They are equipped to handle your event. read more

Went there with a group for dinner. It was pretty disappointing. They had lost their liquor license and therefore could not serve any alcohol. Then I ordered a bowl of tortilla soup and the waiter told me he wouldn't suggest ordering that. I then ordered their cajun salad it was ok and my husband had a burger that was lack-luster. read more

Service is just too trashy to continue to eat there! I used to enjoy taking my family to eat at this place. However it seems they no longer hire people with the right attitude and they keep them on staff just to fill orders. Was there on Sunday, our group of 6 (three being children). 1st problem: none of our salads came and when waitress was reminded she catches attitude and proceeds to blame the kitchen staff. 2nd problem: no drink refills for about 30 min. then the waitress took the glasses and never returned!! I literally had to get up and go demand another waitress. So they send me this guy who had attitude because he had to take over our table........(still no drinks) then finally he comes with our drinks and proceeds to catch attitude when we tell him the ticket needs to be split.............DON'T EAT HERE!! SmithHearts has gotten so bad, this used to be one of my favorite restaurants, the food is horrible and the service is so slow, it honestly sucks because this restaurant used to be one of the best places to go, they definitely need a new manager and some new servers, it took us "a table of 3" 2 hours to get our food. It took 15 minutes just to get drinks, another 15 to get our salads, that didn't have any tomatoes. There were a piece of plastic in both of the meals we got. I will not be returning. read more

Came across this place while just driving around on a Sunday and wanted to try something local. For 6pm it's was very slow in there. Only a few other tables were occupied. The atmosphere was something you'd expect from a Texas grill i.e. Deer heads mounted of the walls and lots of wood decor. Our server was very nice and checked on us several times. We ordered the fried green tomatoes to start. They were ok but under seasoned. I had the 12 oz ribeye. It's wasn't bad. It came with a baked potato and a side salad. The variety on the menu was good. My girlfriend and I stop here at least every two months to eat. The food is normally pretty good but this time not so good. My dinner salad cam out with the lettuce all shriveled up like it has been it the refrigerator for a long time. The big problem with this place is all the flies and nats flying around your food. I told the waitress about all the flies and she told me that we could move tables. I said that probably would not do any good because the flies are all over. Then the manager came to us and tried to tell us the flies are there because they left the back door open while unloading food. I could imagine how many flies were in the kitchen. I told her the flies were there the last time but not as bad. Then she said she didn't know what to do other then spray and she couldn't do that. Well that was the end of that conversation. It is hard for someone to try and eat while shooing flies away from your food. I know other people have noticed the flies but fail to mention them. The slowest service we have ever had, anywhere. It took about 30-40 minutes for our appetizers to arrive, after the salads had already come out. Then it took 45 minutes for the main meals to arrive after the appetizers finally arrived. Bad service just overall. Let me start with I've been visiting this place since about 2005 and have always loved the Cajun chicken app (which is still good, especially with the in house ranch). But the service is absolutely terrible, there is an older gentleman that sometimes works the drive thru and cuts his eyes at any small request even if he's forgotten to put something in the bag. I also called today and got a younger girl on the phone to place my pickup order who put me on hold, forgot about me, then proceeded to gossip with another co-worker about how much she just hates this job. After about 10 minutes on hold I hung up and called back and let them know again I needed to place and order and I was the one they forgot, she placed me on hold and then hung up. I finally called back a third time and was put on hold again then given to an older lady who came on the phone with a terrible attitude. Needless to say I finally got my food after a 30 min drive thru wait. Moral of the story: food is good but sometimes not worth the crap service. read more
