Smiths is a Bakersfield tradition and I haven't found any other bakeries that have that combination of traditional, simple sweets like this. I appreciate fine desserts, but sometimes simple, traditional cookies hit the spot. Like their smiley face cookies. These are perfectly sweetened and although I've seen very similar cookies elsewhere, they all seem to be a bit off in taste. Their glazed donuts seem to be the type you'd find in some old-fashioned turn of the century bakery and that's exactly how I like them. Also, try their cakes. I love this place. Loved them since I was a kid. I have yet to find any bakery that has cookies as good as smiths. I've been living in LA for 5 yrs and haven't found bakeries that have cookies like Smiths. It's such a unique taste and I love stopping by here when I come back to visit. Smith's was recommended by several people to me when I moved to the area recently and was planning my wedding. I can't imagine why! They first lost my order, then offered delivery of my wedding cakes only to retract the offer, and when I sent someone to pick them up, my top cake was not even decorated! Additionally, the girl that helped me couldn't spell, at all! The petite fours I ordered were "ok" at best. Truly a disappointing experience from start to finish. I certainly will not use them again. I can't imagine anyone giving Smith's anything lower then a 5 star rating. Their is a reason they've been around for decades, they do donuts, pastries, cookies, and cakes better then anyone in town. I like that they have more then the basic maple bar, sprinkled donut, chocolate on chocolate.. They offer something for everyone, glazed wheat donut with raisin, pastries, and delicious ones too, they've got you covered. And those Happy Face cookies, boy, oh boy are those addicting... I am a regular , I could spend $40 -$50 at Smiths in one trip... great cookies and always in great colorful holiday shapes kids love em...the eclairs OMG!!! Smith's, Smith's, Smith's. Is there ever a good day in the lives of your employees? I don't think I've seen a smile. PLEASE, do something about this place. Find someone who smiles, and isn't afraid to clean, or work hard to keep the flies out of the cases. Your cakes are delicious, your donuts are delicious, but all of your items are suspect as of lately with the three to five flies that have been standing guard in your cookie case. I've yet to visit your other locations, but this location is too far out of my way to have my smiles counteracted with a frown, or to be left standing at the counter as your rude staff stands around doing nothing but frowning before finally asking what I need. I'll admit it, your cakes are delicious, but I can purchase a delicious cake from any bakery. However, I tend to choose yours, so make an attempt to choose me as a customer. read more

As soon as you arrive you can smell the fresh baked goods. Walking in they are continously bringing out lots of fresh goods. We got the tumb print cookies, pecan roll, a brownie and Champaign cupcakes. They sell the most adorable sugar cookies they are fun shapes and the kids love them. read more

This may be the main bakery for Smith's I am not sure. I stop by here usually when I am in the area taking care of running errands, buying supplies downtown or making a run to the place where we buy oil and lubricants. The people are very nice, the food sold is fresh, and it seems to be a decent value, maybe a little high in price. I have in the past gotten the pretty cookies for children, when mine were little, then later for grandkids. I have even purchased cakes a couple of times, no problems there. I have gone here at least 15 years, and will continue to do so. Sweets are not important enough to make a special trip, but I have no problem stopping here when close by. read more

Rude, rude, rude! Terrible customer service. The women working there didn't seem to want to be there. I asked about a cake and she immediately grabbed it and put it in a box like if I wanted to buy it. Wth! So, I bought it anyway and some cookies This was my first time coming to this bakery. Smith's has definitely set the bar for Butter Cookies! The are the best ever! I prefer a smiley face cookie, but that's just because it makes me happy just seeing it! They also have their champagne cake. While growing up in Kern County, every birthday party in my family had a champagne cake. Which is light, sweet and delicious. I am a fan of the smiley face cookies. I have eaten them since I was very little. They charge a lot for them considering they are just sugar cookies but I can't help myself. I grew up in Bakersfield and some of my favorite treats were the cookies from Smith's. My family still makes sure to have Smith's available when we come to visit or when they come to visit me. I now live in Napa, California and I can honestly say I've never experienced a bakery better than Smith's. I crave their happy face cookies some days. I wish they would open up in the Bay area. The rainbow iced cookies, the alligators with fluffy icing, the clowns. All of the cookies are mouthwatering and delicious. My favorite treat in the morning was a maple bar. I lived in Bakersfield for over 20 years. This has got to be the best bakery ive tried. I found a bakery down south that was about as good, but not better. Growing up, i always requested one of thier champagne cakes for my birthday. Best cake ive ever eaten. Not to mention thier pastries. Cream cheese danish or the butterhorns are excellent. And so are the bear claws. I dont waste my time eating doughnuts when there are such good pastries to choose from. Oh ya, i forgot the lemon filled doughnuts my dad always ordered. Smiths is great. It's my favorite local bakery; although, there's not much competition in Bakerfield. It's all about the happy face cookies. I heard it's impossible to eat one without smiling. A few month ago, I had a mustache party and Smiths was willing to make a "happy mustache face" cookie variant for no additional cost. They were a huge hit at the party. PS. I like the cinnamon crumb donuts (or whatever they call them), the toasted coconut donuts, and the smiley face cookies. The champagne cake is pretty awesome, too. The place is a Bakersfield institution and I've converted many non-Bakos to fall in love with the happy face cookies, maple bars, cream cheese danish and champagne cake. Even though I am a healthy eater on a low-carb regimen, I save room for a sweet treat from here every so often- everything in moderation and Soooooooooo worth it.
