Been a customer of Smiths Bakery since I was a child, (66 now). It's been a few years since I purchased anything having moved out of Bakersfield. Not the same anymore. Chocolate stick has very little chocolate flavor as well as maple bar, very little maple flavor. I remember the frosting didn't just get a sugar glaze after a few hours but stayed creamy. No one there remembers Smiths Bakery making a cream cheese pound cake, the best! I guess nothing ever stays the same. They no longer stand out as the best in Bakersfield. read more

Smiths Bakeries is just an overpriced shell of its glory days. Growing up in this town, Smiths was famous for its quality bake goods, particularly glazed donuts. After being away for many years, I came into town to visit an old college friend. I stopped off at the Smith on Union Ave to purchase some glazed donuts. It was only 0930 in the morning on Friday and they didn't have any. If they had some, the price would be $11 for a dozen. That is considerably pricier than the $6/dozen from our Lucky's store in San Francisco. Since I was here, I wanted to order a bear claw. The clerk said there was one left and since it was a smaller one, she charged me "only" $1.19. I drove off and parked while consuming this bear claw. It was hard and seems like it had been around for several days. Also it was flat tasting and I have had better packaged bear claws from Svenhard's. I felt that they ripped me off by selling seconds as freshly made. Certainly my fond memories of Smiths has been shattered. Well I've finally pulled my lazy bum out there and ordered a half dozen of assorted donuts and of course two more of the pink champagne cupcakes. These sugary sweets are so fresh and soft... I only love this bakery because of their happy face sugar cookies and their cream cheese danish. All their sugar cookies are delicious but that's about it. It's pretty neat that they make sugar cookies themed around whichever holiday is approaching (Valentine's day, St. Patrick's day, Halloween, Christmas day, etc.). Some negatives about this place are their chocolate chip cookies. They are too hard and thin for my tasting, and their brownies aren't that great either. Unfortunately they don't offer any brownies without fudge frosting. As a kid we were allowed to pick what kind of birthday cake we wanted and it always was the same: pink champagne cake from Smith's. How I loved the pink curls of whatever on the top and the spongy and moist cake. In elementary school I used to walk by a Smith's on the way to my dad's office, where I would cheerfully misfile his very important papers while his secretary pretended to babysit me, and I would get a yellow smiley faced sugar cookie. I love Smith's Champagne cake. It's moist, I love the flavor, I love the texture. (And I love comma splices, but who's perfect?) I even like the way it looks with the white chocolate shavings adding a visual texture that is very appealing. I even have a thing for their famous happy face cookies - though I don't understand what it is that I find so appealing about them. The flavor is not particularly intense or anything I'd normally shout for joy at. The icing is the strangest texture ever. So what is it that makes me crave these things for days at a time? I didn't grow up in Bakersfield, so there are no childhood memories viewed fondly through rose colored glasses. I don't know. I've just come to accept that it is so. This location is not particularly convenient - I went more often when my dance studio was located near there - but I still seem to find myself here periodically. It's a convenient stop if I'm headed across town to the East side. It does seem like they never have all of their display cases full when we visit, but we've always managed to find what we are looking for so it hasn't been a problem yet. read more

Went in today and the lady who helped us was rude, not the smaller lady the other lady, unfortunately I didn't catch her name, I simply wanted brownies from another tray that was already half empty, yes she had already put my 3 brownies in a bag, but I didn't want those, she told me with a tone "they're all baked fresh today" "they're they same" ok that wasn't what I asked, I didn't ask that, I gave her one request and she denied me AND gave me an attitude. I've never been to the one on Union, but I've been to the rest of them. The one I frequent the most often is definitely the one inside Sully's on Ming and Buena Vista. I've never had one bad sample here (my favorite part). And the lady always helps me pick out something yummy for myself. My favorites are: The half chocolate pretzel/donut thing, champagne cake, and this marble jello cake thing that I'm literally obsessed with. I have enjoyed their donuts every time I have eaten them, so I decided to order sugar free cupcakes for my son's first birthday. I pre ordered them two days in advance to ensure I could get the order filled. (A dozen cupcakes). As I was walking out my door this morning to pick them up before leaving out of town for his party, I got a call from Smith's informing me that they gave away my order and it would be another hour until they could replace it. Mind you, I was on time for my pick up time and had already pre-paid (their requirement). They offered to take a frozen sugar free 'loaf' out and carve them into cupcake shapes and then frost them. I appreciate the effort but I was expecting fresh goods..not defrosted crap. To top it off she didn't even apologize for the mix up and when I asked for a refund she begrudgingly agreed. I've only had their cookies growing up but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy with them! There are those days when I just absolutely crave their smileys to the point where I would drop whatever I was doing just to get one (or a dozen). I've taken my nieces here a few times and one loves their rainbow cookies while the other favors the clovers (which, of course, are available during St Patrick's Day) and their hearts. I'm a creature of habit so I usually get a brownie, a beehive, a chocolate donut, a cream cheese Danish or colatche ( not sure of spelling ) Not all at the same time of course. There are a lot of reasons to love Smith's: The fact that it's another one of those fantastic Bakersfield businesses that hasn't changed in several decades; The fact that they keep wonky hours so you always feel lucky when you pull up and they're open; The tradition of champagne birthday cakes and Christmas thumbprint cookies.....but me, I'm all about the Smiley Face Cookies. This bakery is a MUST when you are in Bakersfield! A MUST!! I came in on the day before Easter - and this place was hopping! There was a line out the door of people wanting to buy their Easter goodies. There were 4 ladies working behind the counter helping folks. These ladies are definitely no-nonsense. When it's your turn, you better know what you want, so speak up and let them know right away. They want to get to everyone. I noticed that they had a lot of baked goods in the back. I heard people asking for pink bunny and yellow baby chick cookies. I didn't see any of these on display in their case, so I asked my helper if they were out. She said, "no, they are in the back." But, if I didn't overhear a few people asking for them, I wouldn't have even known what they were. I also had to ask if they were out of Chocolate Thumb Print Cookies - which were not in the case, but they had those in the back as well. Whew! They have wonderful baked goods. My favorites are the Happy Face Cookies, Chocolate Thumb Print Cookies, Chocolate Brownies with Nuts, and Pink Champagne Cake. The parking lot gets full quick, but there is neighborhood street parking that is pretty open. They are closed on Sundays. read more

Those would be my favorites and what I recommend you try if you haven't had the pleasure. Smith's is as much of a part of Bakersfield as rednecks, crime, and oil. They are most famous for their cookies which include but are not limited to the following designs: stars, suns, alligators, pigs and rainbows. Besides their bakeries you can find these at any Brookside Deli in Kern County. Speaking of Brookside, delicious sandwiches, but that's another review. Over the years I have had their cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and doughnuts and all of them fantastic. It was grandpa's favorite and whenever I have the rare chance of overindulging in a slice, I think of him. This place made the top of my list of best places to get donuts in Bakersfield for 2017. The staff's white uniforms, the counters, the high ceilings, the lack of crap on the walls to try and impress and or sell more crap to the customer.. not there... As an american woman brought up by Matriarchs who knew how to bake and bake well... right away i knew they were using heirloom recipes for a lot of items. You just don't find many of these obscure and forgotten about creations these days... Anywhere! And to ensure optimal flavor, I'm fairly certain they prepare them in small batches and once they run out.. say la vie! Smiths' products are impressive and so are their prices. First time I left with about 6 different kinds to try at home and the clerk said something like "that'll be $4.59. And that was with my small coffee! I visited a place once like this in Manhattans upper east side. Since then, I have not personally gazed my eyes upon such treasures until now. How lucky you Bakos are to live here! ...Go check this place out- you'll be glad you did, and please tell the lady at the counter you came to visit based on my 2017 Yelp Best of List!!! This review is based over so many years coming here. For the most part, this Bakery has been a Bakersfield local favorite. They have great tasting cookies and their Champagne cake is really good. However, as long as it has been in business, and enjoy having the old school character inside where everything is handwritten and put into baskets for orders, it has caused multiple missed orders. This last visit was pretty personal because it showcased their customer service side. We prepaid and ordered two separate orders. One was for a cookie order over $100 to be completed and custom for our 5 year old birthday on 6/12/21, and another order for birthday cake for 6/19/21. We prepaid for both. We were told to come by on 6/12/21 anytime after 11am. My wife came in to pick up, and they said they didn't have the order. She showed them she got charged for them, and they found our orders in "wrong baskets." Both orders were in wrong baskets, and that is why they didn't get made. We explained it was for a birthday party and there was no way to find someone else to make custom cookies around her theme. They said they couldn't do anything, sing designers were gone for the day, and they could only offer a refund or buy some smiley face cookies, far off from watermelon cookies. Of course, they take our money right away, but won't refund right away. I called shortly after to speak with their manager because it felt like they brushed away my wife, but of course when you have customers standing outside, we are just a simple customer with plenty more to take the spot. I spoke with a lady, which she didn't give her name and was not the manager. She said she heard the conversation with my wife and she was offered to pay for smiley face cookies, and i explained why that wasn't what we ordered. She said, well you are getting your refund. So from her end, that was enough. She said her manager had just left and wouldn't be in next week and had no idea who is running the shop. I told her couldn't she call her manager to call me since this was her mistake because it's ruinning our birthday party for our 5 year old and it's like they don't care at all. For being a local company for so long, this is some of the rudest customer service, but it is common with this location and some ladys behind the counter. Some are better than others, but just surprised with the response. Also, she mentioned "well i hope they make your cake next weekend." Was that a threat? Or calling our how bad their ordering? She eventually just hung up when i asked why they couldn't call someone that is in charge. Obviously someone is paying her, and they should have someone to call if someone was not to show up or something of that sort. So i ended up cancelling my orders. read more

The staff was rude come early morning as if neither of them wanted to be there. They get 1 star for having some good brownies but they really need to work on there customer service...... went in there because they were recommended to me by some clients of mine and I'm new to Bakersfield. Went in to order a graduation cake and the girl that was there knew absolutely nothing about placing an order she said if I wanted to order a cake I would have to wait a long wait or it was probably better if I came in the next day. So I asked if there was anyone else that could help she mentioned that the bakers were there but they wouldn't waste there time in talking to me so I went the next day to place the order even though I knew better. Spoke to someone else that knew more than the other person took the order I asked if I could pay for half of the cake as a deposit and she said no we don't take deposits but you can pay for it in full when you pick up so that's exactly what I was going to do keep in mind this was almost a $200 for a basic graduation cake. Less than 2 weeks before I need the cake I get a call from them telling me I must pay in full for my cake before they make it and this is where I have a problem....... First of all the sales person should of explained to me they expect payment in full and secondly why would I want to pay in full for a cake I haven't seen I understand a deposit but I refuse to pay them almost $200 for something I haven't even seen. These people are unorganized not very friendly and the communication is horrible. Will not recommend this place to anyone and will never go there again. There is a lot of hype on this place because they have been open for so long but they will loose business with the lack of communication and the terrible service. read more

These ladies kick ass everyday. The ladies are always so friendly and attentive to their customers. I love everything I've ever tried here. The champagne cupcake must be tried at least once. My fiance loves the chantilly donuts and I'm a sucker for their cherry glazed donuts. They have a huge selection and even do custom order cakes. read more
