We have been using Smiths for years and only discovered how bad their customer service is when we had a problem. We ordered cookies in team colors for a football party. When we received them they were totally wrong but it was the day of the party and too late to fix. When we complained the owner said "Give then a full refund and tell then to take their business elswhere." We wern't looking for a full refund, but when you spend $40 for 2 dozen cookies they should be right. If they are not right you should at lease expect the business to admit they screwed up and say they were sorry. read more

This is my FAVORITE bakery! I did grow up on Smiths and I miss them since I moved out of Bakersfield. I always get some when I come to town. Their donuts have much better frosting/icing that you will ever find. And their cookies, where do I begin?? The are hella cute and super delicious!!! I always go to Smiths but lately I have been disappointed. It's Christmas time and the store on White Lane did not have much to pick from in the cookie area. I ended up with a few of their Christmas Trees and the taste just wasn't there. They are smaller than they were a few years ago which is OK but the taste was like eating shortening. They have no nut brownies on certain days and I was there but they did not have any. They did not have any candy cane cookies either. It wasn't that they ran out. They just did not have any that day and they were not going to get any. I miss the old Smiths! read more

I came in here in June, looking for a birthday cake for my son. He said he wanted a strawberry cake. Every function I attend always has something from Smith's Bakery. So I've been eating Smith's cookies and Maple Bars since October. Smith's is another Bakersfield Favorite, that's been around since 1945 and today was my first trip to the store. This place was bustling at 3PM with a stream of all kinds of people. When you walk through the door, you feel like not much has changed since it opened. You're greeted with a smile from the women working behind the counter in Red Smock Aprons, with a white polo underneath. The store's walls are lined with their many awards and cake decorations. The food at this place is wonderful, but I always get bad customer service. This time was the worst. I went in and there was two ladies ahead of me who was both helped. When it got to me all the ladies went to the back after looking back at me expect two. There was 5 in total with one already on the phone. The lady who had dark hair was the only nice one. It seems like if I need something custom, it throws them off and they get mad...especially over the phone. Anyway, my company is switching its preference to another bakery that seems to be able to handle day-to-day operations better. Smith's has changed a lot over the years. Their quality isn't what it used to be. It obvious that cakes are not fresh and have been frozen and later thawed. Aside from that, the customer service at this location is awful. My most recent and my absolute last experience at Smith's is a long story, but summed up, the customer service is awful. They rely heavily on their reputation and not on pleasing customers in order to generate repeat business. My story... I went to pick up an order and after leaving saw that my pick up was not accurate. Upon realizing it, I called to let them know. They unapologetically admitted to losing part of it, and told me to come back for the rest. I stood in line for nearly 30 minutes, only to find out that it was still not ready. I waited longer. Finally someone brought out my cupcakes, but there was only one dozen of each type. When I told the employee that I still needed another dozen white cupcakes, she argued that was the complete order. Finally, after pointing out the order slip attached to one box of the cupcakes (stating 2 dozen white), she relented and went in the back to have more made. So I waited even longer. When I was finally brought the last dozen, I was pretty irked at having not received any kind of apology. I did remain calm though. I politely told the manager that I had not been offered an apology for the multiple mistakes or the amount of time I lost out of what was already a busy day. I asked if there was any way they could compensate me for the inconvenience. The manager looked at me like I was insane. She asked what it was I wanted, and when I suggested some extra cupcakes or cookies I thought she was going to lose it. She did (after giving me a death stare) shove 3 cupcakes at me like that was supposed to make up for being late or balance out the mistakes on an order over $100. read more

I'll start off by stating that I've always viewed Smith's Bakery as a reliable, old-fashioned local business with good service. My experience at the Union Ave. location has certainly, irrevocably changed that. I ordered a specialty cake for a local civics group touring the school where I work one week ahead of time for a 6:30am pick-up. When I arrived at the appointed time to pick up the cake, I was told it would be ready in just a moment and the lady at the counter politely offered me a cup of coffee...nice touch. Five minutes later, I was again told the cake was nearly ready as one customer after another departed with their specialty pick-ups. Five minutes later, ANOTHER excuse for the delay. Finally, after waiting nearly 20 minutes, the counter lady said it was nearly ready, to which I loudly replied in a crowded shop, "That cake is in the box within one minute or I'm walking!". 20 seconds later, the cake came flying out of the back room. Profuse apologies followed, but really! I was now late and had no time to check the cake before leaving. Long story short, the decoration job was sloppy, amateurish and unacceptable. I had to cut the cake up before the group saw it to avoid embarrassment and the overall effect was ruined. Again, I have to say this: what has happened to customer service?! I paid an outrageous amount for a specialty cake which wasn't ready at the promised time and the decoration job was complete garbage. I took the owner's business card to let him know of my situation but why invest further time on this fiasco? I'd rather share my experience with fellow yelpsters and let them be the judge. This place is ok if you need to run in and grab something quick (their cookies are yummy), but please for your own sanity don't make the mistake I did and order your wedding cake here. I went in 4 times and they were only nice to me the first time, when I was told to come back 2 week before the wedding to order. When I did what they asked, the staff was so rude and acted like I was in inconveniencing them. I told them I would go somewhere else and then one woman decided to help me, but told me to come back to order the cookies I also wanted for the wedding. When I came back I got someone else and again was treated like it was a hassle to take my order. I asked if they could put my cake on a glass dish and she told me to bring it on the Saturday they were making the cake. So again, I did as they asked- I came back, handed a different woman the cake stand and she walked to the back, only to return with the dish, push it back at me and tell me I had to put the cake on it myself after they delivered it, and then walked off to help someone one else on the middle of me still trying to talk to her. The worst part is that when they did deliver my cake, they did not deliver the additional sheet cake I had ordered. When I called they simply did not know where it was, or if it had even been made! After my maid of honor spoke with them at length (as I was obviously freaking out at this point) they offered to give me some smaller champagne cakes to replace the missing cake I ordered. We went right away to pick them up, and were informed that these cakes were more expensive than what I had ordered- as if I should be happy they messed up!! Horrible horrible service. I will never buy anything from Smiths again. read more

I made the mistake of wanting Smith's cookies as a desert option for my Christmas dinner this year. On the 24th the line was out the door and the wait was long. No big deal except the employees there were the rudest I had experienced in a very long time. After waiting 15 minutes I made the decision to cancel my order. The response from the employee was "I already have my chefs working on your order." She couldn't have been more rude with the way she delivered that line. Because I felt guilty, I waited. 45 minutes later, I had my cookies. My count could have been off, but there appeared to be 8 employees working the front. 7 of them were handling pre-paid orders and only 1 was handling walk in orders. I'm sorry, but money is money. Customers that didn't pre order cookies shouldn't be treated differently. More convenience is expected for pre orders, but this was ridiculous. I was not the only patron that experienced this. If you are reading this review and had a similar experience I would encourage you to write a review and tell everyone about it. This is the only way the management at Smith's can spring into action and prevent this sort of customer experience from reoccurring. At least the cookies tasted good. read more
