I made the mistake of wanting Smith's cookies as a desert option for my Christmas dinner this year. On the 24th the line was out the door and the wait was long. No big deal except the employees there were the rudest I had experienced in a very long time. After waiting 15 minutes I made the decision to cancel my order. The response from the employee was "I already have my chefs working on your order." She couldn't have been more rude with the way she delivered that line. Because I felt guilty, I waited. 45 minutes later, I had my cookies. My count could have been off, but there appeared to be 8 employees working the front. 7 of them were handling pre-paid orders and only 1 was handling walk in orders. I'm sorry, but money is money. Customers that didn't pre order cookies shouldn't be treated differently. More convenience is expected for pre orders, but this was ridiculous. I was not the only patron that experienced this. If you are reading this review and had a similar experience I would encourage you to write a review and tell everyone about it. This is the only way the management at Smith's can spring into action and prevent this sort of customer experience from reoccurring. At least the cookies tasted good. read more

i have been to some bakeries in my day but this one takes the cake. actually they sell it. champagne cake is so good i would sell my firstborn for a slice. the smiley face cookies are worth trading in your right arm. the donuts are so much better than anything i have ever tried that i gave up drugs for maple bars. try the thumbprint cookies they are quite delicious. i have noticed that occasionaly the cookies might be a little less moist but they are still worth a visit. read more

Smiths bakery is by far my favorite bakery I've ever been to! Every year for my birthday smiths is only place I'll go to get a Champagne cake, it's the best cake I've ever had. The employees are so nice and will do anything to help you! If I'm visiting someone or need a quick snack to bring to my girls volleyball games I stop by and get a dozen of their smiley face cookies! Around the holidays they make the cutest designs and have the best deals. There's no where else I'd go to get cakes or cookies for any occasion. They have a couple locations around town which is really convenient no matter where you're headed! You're definitely missing out if you haven't tried them already. read more

Had Smith's make a cake and cookie favors for my baby shower in May. Worked with Tanya, who was very helpful in taking my order and making sure I got the special decorations I wanted. Everyone raved about the cake! 2 tiers, with red-velvet and cream cheese layer in the the top tier and chocolate cake with chocolate ganache on the bottom tier. Overall frosting was french-vanilla (decorated with turquiose and brown polka-dots) .Absolutely delicious! I couldn't have been happier! And the cookies...little blue booties with brown frosting - perfect! They matched the baby theme and colors I wanted perfectly. Bakery was dirty/grimey. pastries were too heavy, best part was the bag was sprayed with roach spray all over the inside and out. I didnt realize it until I ingested some of its poison. This place is over-rated. read more

I love this place most of the time but the last time i went the customer service was terrible the woman behind the counter who ive seen here numerous times before was rude as hell she honestly ignored me for ten minutes and then would help everyone that walked in after me but not me. I was staring at her like ok me next ive known what i wanted since before i even got here and nope so i walked out without anything. I was ignored fully until i peeled out of the parking lot. I have been buying cookies from Smiths for years for every Birthday and every holiday for my family. We stopped by the White Lane bakery to grab our kids a special treat, the famous cookies. We ordered Rainbows, smiley faces and the cinnamon red hearts. When we got home we opened the box and the cookies were half the size of what they normally are. Very disappointing I thought to just let it go but when you are paying almost 2.00 a cookie I thought I will call and see if this is the new way they are being made. I called the Union store because that's where White Lane said handles the issues and that's where I needed to let them know. I left a message and 2 days went buy I called again to follow up and a sweet girl took the info and said that she would let her boss know and that she would get back to me. She was off for a few days and contacted me and let me know that the boss said that there was no way that they were going to credit or refund me my money. I stated all that I wanted was the cookies replaced that we lived out of town that I wasn't going to be back into town for another week or so. I then proceeded to tell her that it was a shame that the boss would think that way to not replace something when you're paying $2 a cookie and I know it's not in her hands but it's pretty bad that the boss didn't want to fix the problem and he's just going to go ahead and lose a customer. I guess I'm just one person so it doesn't matter if they lose my business but it's a shame because now I guess I'll take my business to Sweet surrender. read more

Amazing Smiley agave cookies, great spice donuts around Christmas, killer maple bars year-round. Breads can be a bit soggy as they're sometimes bagged too soon. Cakes are expensive but get that pink frosted champagne cake with white chocolate shavings and you'll forget all about the cost. read more

Sugar cookies are good. Rainbow and pig cookies are the sugar cookies to get. Staff is very nice and fresh cookies are constantly coming out of the back. I have only had the sugar cookies so I can not speak for the others. You can easily spend $20-$30 on cookies here because you always end up buying so many cookies :) read more

Smith's has the best donuts in the world! But everybody knows that! However, I ordered a wedding cake from Smith's for my daughter's wedding and it was amazing! She wanted a Victorian theme and they really came through! It may just be a little hole-in-the-wall store - but they put out awesome looking AND tasting cakes! My daughter was thrilled with the way the cake looked and everyone said it was delicious. It was very reasonably priced also! read more

Ordered a Bday cake for my man here, back in April- and it was delicious! Yes, it cost more than a cake from Costco, and guess what? It tasted better, too! It was not ridiculously priced, considering they made a custom cake for me. I'd much rather pay a little more to a local, family owned business anyhow. So, last week- I had to go in and get some "I'm sorry I yelled at you this morning" treats for my man- and even in the afternoon, they had a decent selection of cookies and Danishes, got a nice little selection for my 'mea culpa' offering for around 12 bucks Parking is a bit weird, but the baked goods are great! read more

Smith's Bakery is iconic in the minds of many people who grew up in Bakersfield. However, it seems to be comfortable with making average-tasting products because they know they have a loyal customer base. There are better places for doughnuts (Sugar Twist, Angel Food) and Alpine Bakery has much higher-quality pastries and cookies (and a nicer selection as well.) When I have had any cake from Smith's (other than a champagne cake), it has been dry and uninspired. You may as well go to a grocery store and pay less for a similar product. For a special occasion cake, Sweet Surrender easily beats Smith's in terms of taste and appearance. I find it interesting that many Bakersfield natives are unwilling to try any products that don't come from Smith's. Loyalty can be great, but in this case, Smith's gets by with making mediocre goods because they know people won't leave to find something better. read more

smiths bakeries signature cookie is wonderful! i took my father in law from virginia there earlier in his visit with us. he wasnt too impressed, but everyone is different. i have ordered a few different items. they werent knock your socks off bomb, but they were very good....i have a cookie recipe that is close to their signature cookie. fyi--- they also do sell there cookie dough and frosting! read more
