I'm retired (lots of "free time") visiting from Vermont, and recently (July 4th) spent over 2 enjoyable hours on a shopping expedition at this well-air conditioned Smiths' location. I found Smiths to to be very well-stocked, and eventually was able to find the items on my "list". Plus, I was able to acquire other unplanned foods enough to cook deliclous meals for the next 3 - 4 days..... Although I didn't get certain employees names, they were ALL extremely helpful in our journeys to find specific items illogically placed within the aisles, shelves, freezers, and refrigerated cases, especially the delightful young woman in the Bakery Dept. I now plan to return to Smiths multiple times during my month-long stay in your wonderful city. Thank You Very Much ! read more

About a year ago they remodeled the interior of the store and i can no longer find anything. The only organization i can tell is that they want you to be lost in this store for hours looking for products that you won't be able to find. The Juice is located in the produce section, the soda/water section, and the cold drink section as far apart from each other as they could possibly be. There are also different locations for cheese so you will spend some time looking for cheese in the cold freezer area and near the produce. Took a literal hour to find the Au Jus packet and a ranch packet... they are in different locations by the way. The wife and I looked for baking soda for another hour, asked 3 different employees and was told differing aisles from 5-9. Each of the employees gave me a range of aisles. I'm sure they don't really know where anything is located either. Never found the baking soda. its not in the baking section, it is not in the cleaning section. we tried each aisle 4 times because we were in such disbelief that it would be like this. This review is for Holly the cake decorator at the bakery. She is an absolute angel of a human. I called Saturday morning for a last minute order and she absolutely killed it! I needed cookie cakes for my dog's birthday party told her it was tie dye theme and to feel free to be creative. She did an exceptional job and I am so pleased! Highly recommend! Save yourself the unnecessary rude, unpleasant, low quality trip to the Smith's on 900 E 900 S. It's so worth the extra few minutes to go over to the 500 E store where they are friendly, not coupon Nazis (they literally refused to honor a coupon that was legitimate and accused me of using it twice when I did not. They also are very rude about dogs. One of the workers was incredibly mean to my friendly little tiny dog who smiles at everyone and the dog is also a registered service dog so, to that lady, I'm sorry you got bit by whatever dog did that, but one of my favorite quotes is, "It really doesn't matter if people don't like you, but if dog's don't you need to take a look at yourself." I used to really like that store, but over the past few years they became a terrible environment and today, I thought "Ok, I'll try it" and it was awful. Never again. I'd drive to Bluffdale before I ever go to that store again (and I live close to it). So disappointing. As if life is not hard enough and we are all dealing with so much. This review is purely for the pick up service. It's vastly superior to every other pick up service that I have experienced. The pick up service at Smith's differs from other chains because they do it in house. That means that the person picking out your veggies is an actual grocery employee. I can tell you that when I order with instacart, pick up or delivery, that frequently you get weird substitutions or they tell you that a store is out of something when you know that there's no way that they're out, or even sometimes they pick the worst example of the vegetable because they're not knowledgeable with produce. This kind of stuff never happens when I do Smith's pick up. It's almost like they read my mind! The quality of the produce and substitutions is always impeccable. Even my eggs are always intact! My only complaint is that I wish there was an option to choose no bags. My house is starting to over flow with bags. I frequently bring my own bags so I could easily use my own. Sometimes if there's not a lot of stuff, I will move the items from their bags into mine but it would be nice to have something more formal when checking out on the website. I also feel like shopping online and using the digital coupons saves me not only time but a lot of money. I'm able to quickly compare prices and do the math to figure out what's the best value. At the store, sometimes I'm in a rush to get out the door and I don't sit there and take my time to calculate the best option. The pick up option is another way that I save money because it prevents me from impulsively eating out. If you spend at least $35, pick up is free and it's almost as convenient as delivery. Everytime you cook a meal at home, even if it's a convenience frozen meal, you are saving money not eating out. I'd rather save my eating out experiences for more upscale experiences than end up eating out every other day out of pure convenience, just saying. Definitely take advantage of using their loyalty account and digital coupons. You can rack up savings ahead of time and not fuss with paper coupons. Also, you can rack up fuel points for free, no expensive membership fee required. It's all free! When you shop regularly, it's very easy to rack up enough fuel points to get $1 off per gallon every time you fuel up, and who couldn't benefit from that? read more

I usually shop at a Smith's weekly somewhere in the valley. I very rarely shop at this location because I'm not in the area that often, and when I am, it's not to grocery shop. This location is pretty busy on matter what time of day you shop. I stopped in here to buy some produce to juice this week. I'm not familiar with this store layout so it took me a minute to find where the produce was located. (it's usually on the side of the building usually up front.) This location has a Starbucks coffee kiosk, which under any other circumstances I would have bought a coffee, but by the time I stopped at this Smith's I was coffee'd out. This produce section was clear in the back of the store, I gave a cursory glance, and found where the celery was at. It did not look good so I left. I didn't end up buying anything. This store has a large floor plan, and a large variety of items. They have pretty good prices on their produce especially when they are having a sale. There is also a large supply of Ute items to support the local university. If you are going to a game, make sure you stop in here to get your garb to wear and show your support for our fabulous Utah Utes. Go Utes! read more

The Kimball Junction Smiths is the only clean Smiths that I have ever seen, and the quality and selection of products is superior to the SLC stores. The seafood is always old, soggy, and smelly, and the organic vegetables are usually more brown that green. The downtown SLC Smiths are dirty and scary. I will stick with Harmons. read more

I live blocks from Smith's and it's been a battle with management for years from licked exit doors to parking lot lights turning on hours after dark. The self checkout is a joke. People show up with shopping carts filled to the rim and spend a lot of time scanning while employees clean or on their personal phones. What I have observed on several if not most visits are thieves with full carts scanning half or partial baskets and skipping most. Why do I care? Because I have to PAY HIGHER prices to cover the stores loss. I've even brought theft up and was told they could do nothing but just let it happen. BULL CRAP!! Change your policy and limit number of items to be allowed in self checkout and hire 1 or 2 more checkers. THE STORE ON 900 WEST AND 800 SOUTH IS A JOKE read more

After a few issues with their pharmacy I elected to switch to a non-Smith's pharmacy. I'm much happier with my new pharmacy. Now the main store itself doesn't accept Visa credit cards. Their employee was quite rude about this (made it sound like it was my fault about not knowing about this, when I hadn't shopped there in a while). Look, Smiths is not the sexiest of supermarkets. I have a love of grocery shopping (I know, I know), but I don't particularly look forward to shopping at Smith's. That said, I still end up at one at least once every week. They are not exciting to shop, and are very much your boring neighborhood grocery store. Their regular prices are average; however the sales can be pretty fantastic. Download their app for additional coupons and deals, including a free item every Friday. And don't get me started on their clearance! A couple differences between this store and the location I frequent: this one seemed a bit older, but better updated. It's definitely on the larger size, although not on par with a "Smith's Marketplace." Their floral department was at least double the size. Cheese selection is a bit larger as well. They have a gas station for those fuel points that add up (I think you can earn a maximum of 40 cents off per gallon). They also carry Tcho Chocolate, which may seem like a small thing, but trust me, it's not. There are eight self-checkout stations, of which I have mixed feelings. I used to think they were cool, but 80% of the time you're going to have a problem, and of course I did. Thankfully, the employee overseeing the self-checkouts was very prompt in assisting me, did so cheerfully, and with lightning speed! If he hadn't been so helpful I would have felt rather annoyed as there was only one regular cash register open, but thankfully this was a non-issue. I won't make a point of returning here simply because it's not generally an area I'm in, but if I were it's a perfectly acceptable option. read more

I've recently moved into this area and would like to shop for groceries at the Smiths in the 9th and 9th area. However the people are so grumpy consistently that I will not go back. I've tried shopping there 6 times and each time they are unhelpful and put-out. The manager of customer service today did not have a smile or nice word. I asked for a paper sack and she ignored my request and used plastic. Another cashier has been there for 20 years and is equally in poor humor. I spend about $900 a month on groceries for my family but will go elsewhere. Came here to try and give this Smiths another chance. For a little bit of nostalgia, who remembers Save & Gain? It was on 7800 S. and State Street in Midvale. Many years ago it was a Smith's. And then they turned it into a Save & Gain. Which we called Ghetto Smith's. Pretty sure it was still Smith's, but in my mind they changed it because they didn't want it to be affiliated with the brand name. I may be totally making that reason up. But the store was real. At least until it was demolished and townhomes went in. This Smith's reminds me of Save & Gain. The shine is gone. The bloom is off the rose, as it were. And now you're left with a satisfactory grocery store. On the one hand, when did we start demanding more than that? More than the essentials, the bakery, the produce, the canned goods and the meat? When did we start asking for all the extras? On the other hand, this is right in 9th & 9th which is one of the coolest places in Salt Lake City. So to have a Save & Gain style store near the likes of Pago and Dolcetti and Mazza and Fresh and Apt. 202 and all their class and cuteness just really hurts. I've not had a bad experience with their employees. But I haven't had a killer experience either. They seem the type to show up to work, stamp the timeclock, put in their time and then go home. Not too many make a career out of grocery work, but you can make a career out of customer service. Few career people here. Mostly people with jobs. You're fine to do some shopping here. But there are just better options around. Even the Smith's just up the road at 21st in Sugar House is a great alternative. read more

I'm updating my review to five stars because I have seen how much this store has improved the last four months. Ever since my review, they have increased their staff and added people who will gladly help you find what you're looking for. Shelves are stocked well and things are hardly out of stock. Ann Marie has been the most particularly delightful and always makes my morning when she calls me "dear". There are a couple other women who also do their job well, including, a blonde woman who works early in the morning and the one with the super cute hair in the bakery usually wearing a green shirt. I wish I knew these women's names so I could also shout them out like Ann Marie. All three of these women make grocery shopping at 6 AM not so bad. read more

Worst experience I have ever had at a pharmacy. Pharmacist and tech I dealt with did not seem to care, listen, or have any sense of responsibility for themselves. Without going into too many personal details, I need Heplisav B which is a two shot series of the Hepatitis B shot rather than a three shot series. The first shot went absolutely smoothly and the staff was great so I felt very comfortable coming back for my second shot. I came in a month later for this second shot and because I need this specific brand, right from the start I tried to incorporate the name of the brand into the conversation as much as possible: "Hi I am here for my second Heplisav B shot for Hepatitis B." Tech: "There's two different types of Hep B shot, which do you need?" "The Heplisav B please, it needs to be that one specifically." Tech: "okay are you here for you first, second, or third shot?" Me: "like I said earlier, it'll be my second shot with the Heplisav B which doesn't need a third shot" Tech hands me a paper to fill out before I get the shot. The paper has a question that says "have you received this shot before?" I asked the tech "so I've already received the first shot of Heplisav B, so for this question should I just write yes?" the tech didn't know or really seem to care and just said it was fine so I wrote yes. She goes and gets the shot. Good techs will bring the box out and show you first, then take the needle out. This tech didn't do that, she goes to the back, and just brings back the needle. This made me nervous because I couldn't see the brand, so I asked her. "Just to be sure, that is the Heplisav B brand correct?" The tech, only giving a half effort to listen and without letting me finish, just said "yes." So I get the shot and get the receipt and, lo and behold, besides all my checking, I was not given the Heplisav B brand which I needed. I go right back to the tech and tell her she gave me the wrong brand. She doesn't know what to do so she gets the pharmacist. After they chat for a bit, pharmacist comes to me and says "so you didn't tell us you needed a certain brand..." Are you freaking kidding me?!? I was just like "uhh yes I did! Several times in fact!" How rude that the tech just immediately placed all blame on me. The tech then comes and was like "well I didn't hear you say that." To which I responded, "well do you remember me asking you if that needle was the Heplisav B brand and you said yes?" To which she sheepishly said "oh I thought you said Hepatitis B." Seems to me a little strange that someone would ask for a Hepatitis B brand of Hepatitis B but okay. Pharmacist comes over with the two different brands of Hepatitis B shots and waves then in front of my face saying "these are the same thing" it completely floored me that a pharmacist didn't know they were different. I had to correct her and say, "no they are not. The Heplisav B is a two shot series, and the other one is a three shot series. With my medical history, I actually need the Heplisav B, which is why I was so adamant from the beginning that I get that one." Pharmacist, frustrated because I dare challenge her knowledge, pulls out the instructions for both and says "no look this one says it's a two shot series and this one says.....oh.... It's a three shot series..." without another word she just walked away and left me hanging for about 5 minutes. Came back with a bunch of papers of information on the shot and embarrassingly tried to explain it to me. She told me to come back next month for a third shot, but the paper she gave me said to wait three months for the next shot. Pharmacists and techs here don't listen, care, or know what they are doing. If you could go literally anywhere else, please do. By the way, this is the ONLY thing I've ever gotten at any smiths pharmacy so they can clearly see in their system which brand of shot I had before, but willingly chose to ignore it or simply weren't paying attention. 0/10 avoid at all costs. read more

I pulled up to get gas, and the machine wasn't accepting my card. So I headed to the kiosk in the center, still feeling patient and not too put-out with this extra step. I waited at the kiosk for 5 minutes because no one was in it. Once an older woman finally entered into the kiosk, she proceeded to ignore that I was there for another couple of minutes. She was organizing things, etc, so I have her the benefit of the doubt. Once she finally addressed me through her in-kiosk microphone, all I got was a rude, angry "What?". I kindly said "could I please put $20 on number 7?" And put my payment in the drawer and slid it toward her. She then said "what number?" I told her number 7 again, and she literally waved me away with her hand. I couldn't have been more disappointed with how I was treated. I was nothing but patient, kind and pleasant. This woman treated me like I was trying to rob her. She also did not let me put in my smiths reward number, which is frustrating because I know I have a large gas discount built up. So, does that mean I have to ask an employee the rules for each special? Instead of buying three cases, I bought zero. Ugh. But of course the grocery store in closest proximity to my home HAS to be all Hills Have Eyes-ish. Seriously, have you ever taken a quick stroll in here? Or god forbid, do the majority of your grocery shopping here? I'm pretty sure ALL of the most horrid looking people in Utah adore this particular location. Its frightening. But this alone does not warrant a 2 star review. Its the fact that they are CONSTANTLY out of deli items, like the rotisserie chickens. Those chickens have become my best friend in the past months. I'm not usually in the mood for major cooking, and these little gems make my life 10 times easier in that department. I don't even know why I try to get one here anymore.. I always end up having to go to the gigantic 400 location anyway. I agree with Monica T., the employees at this location of Smith's is definitely not the A team. Maybe the D team, at best. Even at the peak hours, you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone that has a clue about anything regarding the operations of the store. One cashier was actually bragging to me about how it was her last day, and how she had never been happier. Well good god, I can see why... Another thing... they always have an employee guarding the exit, staring people down as one enters and leaves. I thought maybe for a second that it was a greeter, Walmart style, giving them the benefit of the doubt. Whenever you move to a new city, one of the first questions you ask yourself is, "Where will I shop?" In our case we were closest to the Smiths near 9th and 9th. There are things to love about this market, and there are things to hate. The store can be a little overwhelming by its sheer size. The produce section is as good as any I have ever seen. The meat and deli counters are excellent. But the way the store is laid out makes doing regular shopping more like running a foot-race up and down the aisles. I will admit that it took a while to get used to shopping here. But now I quite like it. I don't like that the number of cashier stations have been lessened to the place where almost half of the checkout counters are self service. Unless I have only purchased one or two items, I hate the automatic check out system. There are usually other clerks around who can help you through the process but still I just don't like it. I like having a competent pharmacist there as well so if I need multiple things it's one stop shopping for me. I like to go early in the morning, but that's just my style. I have been in this Smiths many times when it seems like it's my own private grocery store. The rewards card system seems to be paying off for us as well. With a $0.50 per gallon discount that I earned with my points, I ended up paying only $3.14 for a gallon of gas at the adjoining gas station. I think that's a cool added bonus and shopping on the weekends burns you double points. read more

Let me state this up front: I am not reviewing a supermarket to pump up my review list! I am reviewing it because it's very different than the other markets where I shop. It's worth mentioning why and how... I always call this the "9th & 9th Smith's." It's my on-the-way-home store where I stop for staples. I rarely spend more than $25 a trip here because they lack some of my favorites. Pluses: *decent prices. Smith's is aight in this regard. *two Redbox machines=higher chance they will have that flick you're needing. *Easy in/easy out--I have never waited long in line here. *Lots of cold Utah beer! *Semi-decent organic/healthy aisle. It's enough to work with. *Fairly hot crowd. I think it gets a high percentage of college women. Let me put it this way--I check my shit in the mirror before shopping here. Minuses: *No Boar's Head meat in the deli case. WTF? I'm not buying the old man low-salt ham that is shaped like round coffin. I will spend $10/lb, but I need options. *No White Castle burgers in the freezer section. I know they are an acquired taste, but let's just say that there are times when I really NEED a White Castle. Failure to find one makes me paranoid. *Slightly anemic Mexican foods aisle. It's better than some but not nearly as full and impressive as the Smith's on 2100 South. It seems like an aisle meant for gringos cooking Mexican, not Mexican's cooking their own style. *No organic bacon. Bacon is where I really want to know it's organic. In summary, I shop at this Smith's when convenient only. When I'm there I like to scope the ladies and hope that they don't see my freaking huge box of frozen hamburgers. So this Smith's is walking distance from my house, yet I don't seem to find myself here too often, ditching it in favor of my beloved downtown Smith's Marketplace. I think, mostly, it's the people. Everyone at this Smith's seems to be sleepwalking through their work at best. I've gone through checkout lines and paid without the cashier saying a word to me. My most classic 9th and 9th Smith's checkout experience was when I went through the line of an older lady while wearing my "Dirk is my homeboy" t-shirt (this is in reference to Dirk Nowitzki of our 2011 NBA Champions, the Dallas Mavericks). She gives me a scowl and says, "So I see you're a fan of Dirk Nowitzki." "Yes," I said, "I am." She replied, "You know that he's a very dirty player. Did you see what he did to Kirilenko?" And this was clearly not in some half-joking fashion. She was clearly offended at my love for the greatest team in the NBA and its greatest player and I think she might have tried to spit in my groceries had I turned my back. Ok, maybe not, but you know. Otherwise, this is a perfectly acceptable grocery store. It's looking sharp after the recent remodel. Their meat and seafood section has a bit more variety than the downtown location, but they have no Boar's Head at the deli counter, which is sad. I do really like that they put a gas station at this location, so that I can make use of all those rewards points I'm earning. Overall, this place is fine (despite the lethargic staff), but I'd rather drive a couple of minutes more to get better service at the other location. read more

Really disappointed with the Smiths in West Point. There is usually just one line open with one cashier checking out groceries. You can anticipate a ten to twenty minute wait no matter what time of day. Then you have one employee at the self checkout herding the customers down to check-out themselves. Please don't need any help the attitude from the employee will be another benefit you will get to enjoy. You have to check your groceries out, bag the groceries and have the employee stand there looking at you basically with no interest in helping you. The outside of the store has garbage discarded all around the store.The customer service is severally lacking. read more

I guess the Clicklist program is pretty new, but OMG how did I not know about it until now?? Basically, you pick out which items you want, when you want it and a pickup time online. Then you go to the pickup lot next to the receiving area and call the number on the signs, they ask you your name and then you just pop your trunk and wait for them to load your groceries into your car. If they have to make substitutions they ask if it's ok to switch and will price match any substitution if it's higher than the original item. Michelle was the associate who helped me and explained all of this to me. She was super patient and answered all my questions and I was really impressed with the selection. This program is going to save me the 1.5 hours I usually spend wandering aimlessly around the store every week. And I'm pretty sure this just cemented Smith's as my official grocer, because now I can't imagine doing my shopping any other way. There are only 2 things that could be better: I'm lactose intolerant so it would be really awesome if the nutritional information was listed with each product so I didn't have to Google it as I'm shopping; and if there was some way to reduce or eliminate all the plastic bag use (although the Clicklist bags are much sturdier than the regular Smith's bags so I can reuse them for other things). But since this is a fairly new program, I'm assuming these will be addressed in the near future. read more

Until this place stops printing excessively long receipts, it gets 1-star. Friendly staff, self-checkout is easy and speedy, good pharmacy, awesome deals storewide.. Love the fuel points, too. Be careful in the parking lot. The greeter/security guard(?) by the door, who seems to always be there, is a wonderful guy. "Thank you for shopping with us.
