Not only their produce is well priced, but their gas can get cheaper as you do your shopping in the store. They have everything food related a normal person with taste might need to make an awesome meal. Its always clean, including the bathrooms, it's close to my place, and it always has enough parking. Just meh. Nothing too special about this location. Not the cleanest nor the most organized but it gets the job done and the location is convenient. Went to the pharmacy for the first time and the employee was starting to get annoyed with me. Smaller selection in the natural foods area compared to the other locations. However I am glad to see that they put a Starbucks in finally. Love that they offer Rico's brand Mexican foods (local). It needs a little bit of updating but like I said they had everything I needed so I can't complain too much. read more

I'm rating the customer service in the front end where you can make money transactions. The lady in the front & the guy in the front were very rude. There was a customer doing money transactions & they seem to not know what they were doing. The man who was helping was telling other customers that there is no other computers & to be patient in a rude way. I asked for a manager & the fat lady was like "I am the manager" so I yelled at her & then she shut up the rest of the time. I told her don't yell at me because I'm a customer & she didn't know what to say. Stupid idiot. Second only to the 21st South location in my shopping preference list. This store is closest to the 9th and 9th District and the University of Utah so expect a faithful UofU fanbase in the shoppers around you. Lots of red! This was my neighborhood store for over a decade. I really loved it for the variety and availability, but I wanted more exotic products. The kinds of stuff you could buy at a Whole Foods or a Harmons. Organics, gluten frees, fine meats, special beverages, unusual fruits. These days those products are sold at almost every grocery store, making them available at a store like Smith's. When I visit Utah, I love to back here and marvel at the wide, empty aisles, the giant floorplan, and the interesting random selection of exotic items mixed in with the regular items. They have some gluten-free products that I can't get where I live, and some local products that I can't live without. I wish I could somehow merge this store with my local store in my current home because Smith's has everything I miss. (Except for the Harmon's Spoon Roast and the Whole Foods White Bean and Kale Soup). read more

I usually do most of my grocery shopping at this Smith's instead of the one on 400 s because it's usually less crowded. You can find most of the things you need here and the actual store looks better now after they remodeled. The only negative is that there is still some construction work being done in the parking lot which might be bothersome. read more

This Smiths is the closest grocery store to my house, sans Whole Foods, but I find myself hitting up this place in the later hours of the night for random items I forgot for dinner, or a jelly belly fix. I don't do the bulk of my shopping here, I make the drive to the Murray Winco once every two weeks so I don't have to go to the store that often. Yes, the staff look like they are gonna burn the place down at any moment, and the clientele at night can get sketchy, and late late at night the self check out is the only option available and said sketchies can't figure out for the life of them how it works....but it does the trick when I need an onion or a loaf of bread, and I can show up in my pajamas looking undesireable and no one gives a crap. All in all, I will stick to Winco and Whole foods for the price/quality of food I need, but visit this store in times of desperation and convienience. read more

Why do I come here so often? It's open 24/7 and has a great gluten free & organic section. The layout of the store itself it kind of confusing, and not very shopper friendly. The clientele is quite a mix bag. Typically, because I usually come here when it's late at night, it's more college-student heavy, but I feel like the people who come here are a little more "tough" than the people shopping at the Smith's Marketplace a few blocks north of this small Smith's. You can tell it's an older store than most others in the area, which is fine, but do not expect it to be near as fancy as the Marketplace down the street or in the Avenues. Don't forget about the awesome deals on fuel perks when you buy gift cards. I always go here for gift cards for everyone, as well as to serve as a middle man to capitalize my money, buy purchasing gift cards that I know I will use, especially when it's 4X fuel perks! read more

There are things I like about this store and there are things I don't. Lets start with the pros: 1. I love the meat department here. It really is in my opinion the best in the state. I do drive weekly to this store to buy my meat even though I live in cottonwood heights. The quality here is so much better than the stores by my house. Something I didn't know until recently is that I can get an item cut a certain way if what's in the counter isn't right for me. Not sure how many other people knew that but that tells me the customer service is great. I really appreciate the staff for letting me know this as I have spent years going to butchers to get the same service but spending way more money. 2. Bakery. Any time I go to this store I always stop for a bagel. Almost always run into a gentleman stocking these items and he is always way friendly and talkative. But not to talkative. which is great! I have never been disappointed in their bagels. 3. This last one can be a pro and a con depending on who you are. Some days it's both for me. Everyone that works in that store has to say hi and ask if I'm finding everything ok. Now I know they are probably told to do this but someone needs to say to corporate that if I already passed an employee in that isle who asked this. I don't need to be asked by the other employees in the same isle that already saw and heard me answer the other guy. Con: 1. The layout is awful. Things are in weird locations and scattered. The isles are hard to navigate and things are hard to find. Some employees don't even know where things are. Now to be fair it's a big store. Memorizing the locations of even half the items would be impressive. 2. Self check outs are a nightmare. Don't think I am bitter because I had one bad experience with them or that I don't know how to operate. Every time I go through them I have an issue. And half the time when they say an attendant has been notified to help you there isn't an attendant within earshot to know what's going on. Forcing me to stand there and wait. 3. Last the produce department needs some work. fruit and vegetables are either hard as rocks or way to ripe. Please fix. read more

After having been forced to shop here the last two main trips, since we missed the "window" to hit the sweet spot of our usual store on 2100 S., I can say unequivocally that whoever designed the layout of this place must have been on some kind of nauseating technicolor acid trip that decreed the best thing to do is to keep people in the stores damn near forever, wandering up and down aisles endlessly before giving up and deciding they don't really NEED x-item at that kind of time cost. The only thing this awful maze is missing is a minotaur. The apathy of the staff, which others have mentioned, is alive and well, but I could live with that if I could at least easily navigate the store rather than having to look in three separate and distinct sections for fish, for example. I use this sort of as levity, but also counted at least 5 different areas where it could be found. There may be, in fact, more... Seriously hate doing actual shopping here, selection has tanked in the last 3 months somehow and the gas pumps, which are admittedly convenient and the fact that I can usually get a decent part spot are the only things keeping me from downrating this further. read more

The last time I was at this Smith's was in the summer of 2011, so in-between the oldest and newest reviews here. I loved it - the prices were much better than Dan's (on Foothill), and the variety was very good. I liked the fact that they had some produce, like carrots and celery, that are normally sold in bunches, but they were sold in single pieces by the pound. When I lived in SLC for 3 months, I lived alone and cooked mainly for myself, so sometimes being able to buy 2 carrots and 3 celery ribs (or something like that) was a real plus. They have seasonal goods and household items, some of which were fun and unusual (like grown-up sippy-straw cups), and a prepared food section (including a Chinese restaurant and a sushi chef) (I often bought cooked chicken, soups, sandwiches, etc., when I got to the point in my stay where I was better off buying food than cooking it). I particularly appreciated being able to use my grocery points to get discounts on my fuel - I would let my gas tank get down to nearly empty before I'd fill up so I could maximize the discount. At one point I got 30 cents a gallon off! Like someone else here, I found the deli counter a bit lacking - I really wanted liverwurst one day and was told they didn't carry it at the deli counter and that I had to look in the prepared meats section. The woman behind the counter actually told me I had to go to the butcher, but the butcher gave me a puzzled look, then realized what I was asking for and led me thru the store to the refrigerated cold cuts section. Seriously? You don't sell liverwurst at the deli? Weird. On the other hand, they had a rather eclectic variety of snack foods and they also carry a variety of nut milks - I usually drink soy milk because nut milks are harder to find, so it was a really nice change to get hazelnut milk (delicious in coffee, especially the chocolate-flavored one). I always found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful, but maybe the way I measure that is different from other reviewers - I live in NYC, where everyone is in a hurry and their manner is rather abrupt. "Pleasant and helpful" to a NYer is pretty much any time you get service without a scowl - anything more than that we usually think of as "outstanding" (ha ha). I did go shopping at another Smith's (I don't remember where it was, but it was near a Staples, and I know most of my fellow UofU classmates went there), which was nice but more of a real department store than a supermarket. First off, I'd like to say that I'm really surprised by the negative comments here. I didn't take the time to read them all, but I'm hoping it's because the store was out of something they were looking for... This Smith's has been my go-to store for several years, but not because it is the closest grocer. In fact, we moved about a year ago, and I would still prefer to drive past three other grocers to come to this store (and I do that whenever time permits). The layout works great for me. I make a huge circle going through the store and it makes shopping super easy. Food staples like rice/canned goods first and then breads, produce, meats, cheese, baby isle, dairy and then I hit the freezer items on the way out. I have never been to a store (grocer or otherwise) that has done such a good job consistently of asking how I am or welcoming me to the store. And not like six people do it one day and no one the next (as if management is around one day). I mean, I've had people greet me and smile while they sing to themselves. Talk about feeling like you're in a neighborhood grocery store! I've never run into a single employee who wasn't kind and helpful. I love this location and love having a store where I feel like the employees recognize me--even though I know that's not possible since I only shop there only once every two weeks. Oh, one other thing. It's one of the few places that I actually prefer the standard check-out more than self check-out. I've found that the cashiers are very friendly and many of the baggers are as well. I've even had multiple experiences where someone will open up their check-out lane for me just so I don't have to wait behind one person. This happened several times when shopping with a newborn last year. They're very aware of their customers and seem to look for opportunities to help. read more

I transferred from working at Fred Meyers in Washington state to this store. It's awful. Here employees are basically treated like animals with no feelings and less brains. You get threatened with your job for not smiling. I've heard checkers get threatened with their jobs for not weighing a pumpkin right. You don't treat people like that, it's just not right. This is right by my house but I avoid it like the plague. I won't support how they treat people in their employ. I was fired after 5 years working for them because I had a doctor's note saying I could not do one task. The note was from my lactation consultant. They Hated my breastfeeding my baby. They did not want to give me any breaks at all but were forced to so I could go to a private space and do my cow impression. When I was 8 months pregnant I got the flu and called in. My boss made me go get a doctor's note and when I brought it in she gave me a 'talk' about letting my state be an excuse for calling in sick. This is NOT a happy place to work and it shows when you shop there. read more

I came into this store to shop for the week and filled up a cart of food. No lanes were open, only the self checkout. I asked if they could open one since I have a large quantity of food. They said no. And I have to check myself out. The machine malfunctioned about 6 times and the attendant was not called when I requested, she was busy smiling and laughing with a fellow associate. As I walked out the guy she was talking to asked me if my hat was a baseball or basketball hat, I said "I don't know man" and he called me an asshole! I'll never shop here again or any other Smiths. You need to be very careful to check the expiration date on products purchased here. They have a great deal of products that are outdated. Especially check things on clearance or managers special as they use the sale tags to cover the expiration date!! read more

Awful most pathetic experience I have ever been put threw!!! Been shopping here for years ,$200 every #4 days. This time middle aged blonde women with bangs checked us out & my husband buys beer once or twice a mnth. & he is i.d. & I never have been. Even know Im 38 which has nothing to do with it!!! She got manager 'Jesse' who happened to check us out week prior & he snatched beer away because i never bring purse & didnt week before either, when he let us purchase beer...Extremly disapointed as he sat there and argued with us as the blonde chick was snickering...We returned 10 min. later to purchase beer with my i.d. too & went to talk to him explaining he should make sure his rules apply the same every time instead of when he feels like it!! Of course he denied everything & the older blonde lady was behinde him laughing and pointing at us with another employ the whole time!!!
