Of course everything is relative, but the BBQ I just enjoyed at Smoke BBQ Pit in Springfield Gardens (Jamaica), Queens, was about the best I have sampled north of the Mason-Dixon Line and east of the Alleghenys. As we approached after parking in the narrow lot behind this joint, the strong aroma of smoked meat overpowered us, and set my salivarys a-squeezin'. We were tempted to just walk in the open back door into the kitchen and claim temporary insanity if called for trespassing. Then I thought about all those sharp knives used to carve up the sides of pork and beef, and decided discretion was the better part of valor. We walked around to the front door. There, we were warmly greeted by a couple of dudes in black, who genuinely took an interest in our satisfaction until the moment we left two hours later. The dining area was all wood paneling and beams. Picnic tables and benches, and all made to look and feel like a large south country cabin. The ambiance perfectly suited to the pungent and piquant smells wafting on the air. There was a long bar on one side, and the kitchen in back with a Southern Pride smoker. On the far side was a second room for private parties. They invited us to have a look, even though it was closed at the time. Good salesmanship. Our primary server learned that this was our first visit, and recommended "The Feast 2." He described that is was a sampler of three of their meats (our choice), plus 4 sides and corn bread. Given the rest of the menu had platters and sandwiches in the $10-12 range, The Feast @ $32 made sense. We ordered the Pork Ribs, Brisket, and Chicken; plus Baked Beans, Fries, Corn on the Cob, and Cole Slaw. Something from every food group. Everything was first cut. The Pork Ribs were meaty and dense with little fat. They hung on the bone, and had been basted with a great Memphis style sauce. No more was needed. The Brisket was tender and succulent. The Chicken had crunchy skin and excellent flavor. All the sides were decent, if not outstanding. If there was any weak link, it might have been the Corn on the Cob. We buy our corn from the farmer across the road from our home, and it is really impossible to compete with an ear that can be eaten raw after shucking. Too, there was so much food on the platter, that the kernels were really overkill. We also made a mistake ordering the Peach Cobbler after consuming so much. Eyes bigger than stomach. It was huge, sweet and creamy, but microwaved, which made it all rather too soft. At $7 it was a something we would not do again. Otherwise, Smoke be smoking! We came in close to closing time, which we thought were an hour and half before time but then I see elsewhere they they closed sooner so I'm not even sure what time they actually close. I wasted an entire day interviewing for some scam-like job the day I discovered this Smoke BBQ Pit. Yes, I was in the middle of nowhere Queens and first ran in here for the lady's room. I came back a few hours later because I was starting to feel hungry and there weren't any other respectable restaurants around. I must say, due to the immediate neighborhood surroundings, I didn't expect my lunch to be so spectacular. I ordered the catfish sandwich with sweet potato fries. DELICIOUS. The catfish was fresh and lightly breaded, buttery and perfectly fried. The sandwich bun was sweet and soft. The tartar sauce was a nice addition to the sandwich. The sweet potato fries were clearly homemade and yummy and the coleslaw was sweet and crunchy! I swear, if this place wasn't a headache to get to, I would come once or twice a month. I'll start off by letting you know that this is the worst customer service that I've ever experienced. My friend and I went there for dinner, I ordered what they described as "jumbo fried shrimp", with a side of corn and Mac & cheese. My friend ordered rib tips, with a side if Mac & yams. My shrimp were just regular butterflied shrimp that you can get already breaded in the frozen food section, so was my corn, and the Mac & cheese had no flavor at all. My friend's food was the just the cheap part of the the ribs that people usually toss out. We tried to eat the food, but it was horrible. When the manager came over to ask how everything was going we asked if we could switch our meals out for burgers and fries. The manager got an attitude and took our plates, a few minutes later our burgers were at the table (a bite on the burnt side but ok). Later on we asked for the check and when the waiter handed it to me, I noticed that he charged us for the platters that were sent back. We were not ok with paying for the horrible food that we sent back, so we asked that it be adjusted to reflect the food that we actually ate. The waiter left the table to speak with the manager about it and when he returned, he told us that the manager refused to adjust the bill. We asked to speak with the manager, the waiter went to get the manager. When the waiter returned he informed us that the manager refused to come and speak with us (not professional). We demanded to speak with him because we were being charged unfairly. The manager finally came to our table and began to argue with us about how much we ate off our original platters (we ate about 25%). After a little back and forth, the manager finally agreed to take off 4, then 6 dollars off our entire bill, which wasn't much but we were frustrated and ready leave so we agreed, paid and left. Horrible dining experience. If Yelp had zero stars as an option, that's what I would have given this place. read more

The collard greens were tasty and the Mac-N-cheese was good in 2012. I also ordered the strawberry lemonade from the cocktail menu. Very good and no complaints. Service was dynamic. Fast Forward to the end of 2014 and a total 360!! I highly recommended the Catfish to my girlfriend because of the previous trip. I decided on the BBQ Brisket meal. $15.99 gets you 2 sides. I went for the Collards and Mac as ordered previously. Our food came out rather quickly and later it was revealed to us why. My girlfriend bit into her 1st piece of Catfish and exclaimed it was Light and tasty. On her 2nd piece she realized the texture was that of SUSHI ! Fried on the outside..and Habatchi Fish on the inside ??! The owner tried bringing out another piece to sample. Still uncooked and Raw. She had to resort to ordering BBQ WINGS. My Brisket was not the finest grade of meat and the temperature was not that of a "Smoked BBQ PIT". Tasted Microwaved. I was too hungry to request a hotter plate. The Mac and Cheese was Mediocre at best. Kraft Macaroni Deluxe perhaps? Or the generic Walmart brand? I ordered Peach Cobbler for dessert to make for a happy ending. To this the server responded that "people steal." So we we had to request barbecue sauce at a bbq spot, and were issued these condiments via splashes in a plastic cup and not the barbecue sauce bottle. After we finished eating, an employee comes and wipes the table down. He wiped diligently, lifting our glasses and rudely reaching in front of us as we watched in disbelief! Great place, the atmosphere brings you to mind that you're outside of NYC. Wood tables and seats, mason jar glasses, you feel you're somewhere in the south. Of course your surrounding come back after you look out front window and see the Merrick blvd traffic. The atmosphere is nice but the service is slow. The portions are a decent size, but we didn't even want the leftovers. I had the jumbo fried shrimp with sweet potato fries and "southern" greens. I mean if they changed just a few things this place could be great. I was in town for work on a Wednesday night and stopped by this place with a coworker. The atmosphere mimicked what you would find in a typical casual BBQ establishment with novel southern/country furnishings. They have plenty of TVs to watch sports. We were seated immediately and shortly thereafter our server stopped by and asked us what we would like to drink. I got a water and my coworker got a soda. He arrived with our beverages and we did not get refills for the rest of the meal, despite our drinks being empty for at least half the time. About the food. In my opinion, the best BBQ places do not sauce their BBQ, before serving it to you. The best places season it, they cook it to perfection and serve it to you and allow you to sauce it (or not) to your liking with their in house variety of BBQ sauces. However, everything on this menu comes sauced. So there's that. I had the rib tips platter with Mac and cheese, baked beans and corn bread. It was nice to see rib tips on the menu. Rib tips are some time thought of as the scrap meat when preparing ribs and for this reason they're cheaper and provided in larger portions. The truth about rib tips however is that they are just as moist and arguably more flavorful than the rest of the rib. The smoke BBQ pit's offering of rib tips were good, not great. As for the sides, they were mediocre at best. As for the corn bread, the best way to describe it is as corn bread with the consistency of cake. I liked it. Oh and my meal also came with Texas toast. And by that I mean it came with a slightly thicker than normal piece of bread that had been toasted on a grill. No butter, garlic or any sort of seasoning. Came here with my family on numerous occasions and have nothing but great things to say about this establishment. The food is phenomenal I usually get the brisket sandwich or the brisket platter, the meat literally melts in your mouth. The Wings come either buffalo, BBQ, or simply fried you really need to try all three since it's the perfect appetizer to start a meal. The restaurant itself is a beautiful place, the service is excellent really attentive, the people there are super friendly. I came in here once for a birthday party with 25 people, not one order was incorrect and literally every member of the party was amazed at both the quality and portions of their meals. We had the half feast which includes ribs, chicken, brisket, mac& cheese, fries, cole slaw and corn. Their prices are excellent $36.00 for all of that. Their meats are great highly recommended if you go for some good bbq meat. Their sides not so much. Mac & cheese was flavorless and watery, baked beans and fries were a hit , and the Cole slaw was watery. We also ordered catfish, it seemed as if its double battered and was a tad doughy.
