10/10 recommend. I really enjoyed myself at this establishment. I went in person and I dined in. They have the option for that and takeout. There is an area for dining which is a large space. There is an area for a private party off to the side, and there is an area where a bar is located far inside the place. It was nice. The food was delicious. Better than I expected. I have seen this restaurant there for YEARS. I may have tried it once over 15 years ago. Things have definitely changed and I am impressed. The ribs (which I didn't taste but someone at the table did) looked amazing. They were huge beef ribs, similar to flinstone dinosaur ribs!!!!! I heard that they were tasty too. The fried catfish and shrimp entree was what I ordered and it was amazing. The sides as well. The service was spectacular. Everything that was needed and asked for, was provided. No questions asked. We chose the 2 meat combo option, and selected rib tips and pulled pork, which came with cornbread and 2 sides. For the sides, we went with mac and cheese, along with seasoned rice. We also had French fries, onion rings, and corn on the cob. We wanted to add chicken wings, but there was a weird glitch in the online ordering app and charged an additional $10 than what the actual price was. Hopefully it was an honest mistake, and is fixed by now. The meat was really tasty, but it was kind of a small portion for the amount of money the restaurant was charging, which was around $25. The rib tips were slathered with wonderful tasting BBQ sauce, irresistibly tender, and slightly burnt and crispy... Just the way I like them! The pulled pork was cooked low and slow, delightfully juicy, incredibly succulent, and filled with smoky BBQ flavor. I really enjoyed the satisfyingly crunchy onion rings. The cornbread was great as well... Moist, crumbly, buttery, with plenty of corn taste and still warm. The seasoned rice was decent. Tried this place for the first time about 15 or so years ago, I should've let that time be the last time. Not much has gotten better since the first time, if anything at all. Ordered the seafood platter, shrimp, and catfish with two sides. The shrimp was cool, seasoned welled and fried perfectly. The catfish could've been too if they fried it for like 45 more seconds, instead it was soggy. The collards are decent, missing that vinegary taste I love with greens when done right. The mac and cheese is a joke. It's literally Mac and cheese. No flavor whatsoever. The cornbread was really good. Between that and the shrimp is why I gave this place a 2. My sister had been here before & was pleased, so one evening my sisters & I decided to come here for lunch. I had the half rack of ribs with mac & cheese, yams & it came with corn & cornbread. The ribs were very flavorful, tender & fell off the bone. The mac & cheese was just ok & yams were seasoned very well, however they needed to cook a little while longer because it didn't melt in your mouth, it was a little tough. Well something has changed since my last visit. The food is absolutely different and not in a good way. I returned for a pick up of my usual beef ribs, mac & cheese, candied yams, and sweet tea and unfortunately EVERY SINGLE ITEM was off. Beef ribs were not tender at all, the meat was tough and very firm. The Mac & Cheese had an off taste and it wasn't creamy. My cousin suggested that we visit this place to dine with family. I've heard of it but never visited it until today, 8/12/18. Eva, one of two servers for our party of nine greeted us shortly after we arrived. We were seated quickly and given time just to reflect on the menu items without being rushed to order. We had another server who called himself Money lol, I was like okayyyyy. I had to ask him his name because he did not introduce himself when he approached our table. He also doubled as our personal photographer lol after we finished eating our food. While waiting, I decided to read the Yelp reviews to get a heads up but the reviews were mixed but myself and my family enjoyed our meal. Let me tell you! When they FIRST opened and had those cooks back there the yams were candied, the Mac n cheese had cheese and the ribs were cooked properly!! I prayed on those coins hands as the food was so good! Matter of fact I remember the main cook was this plump blk guy and he used to come from the kitchen just to watch ppl enjoy the food! I had a tough day so I stopped by The Smoke BBQ Pit on Merrick yesterday. I haven't been in a while. Boy have they gone down. The server was so engrossed in his phone we couldn't get his attention. Service was slow and distracted. The food was completely bland and dry. I'd say almost inedible. And I like a good drink but that mango Pina Colada tasted like pure rubbing alcohol. It was horrible. Even the other customer (lol) was complaining about the food. I'm not eating there again. Finally the bathroom was dirty, smelly and missing basic needs like toilet paper and paper towels. Spending the weekend with my bff before the breast cancer walk and she decided to order wings from Smoke pit. We pre ordered over the phone a total of 100 wings, pan of sweet potato fries, large collard greens and Mac and cheese. We were told 30 mins but it took about an hour because when we got there 30 mins later we still had to wait. No worries all was good. The food was great and I have no complaints. I did want to take a star away because they missed 25 wings but when we called they apparently already knew and told us we can come get the wings anytime. Smoke BBQ Pitt has a outdoorsy decor to it. Everything is made out of wood whether real or faux. This place reminds me of the cabins in the Lifetime movies that married couples go to cheat on their spouses. There are flat screen tvs that line the walls. There's a separate bar area, a dining area, and a to-go line. I've been here a few times for drinks but never for food. After going over the menu I settled on the Catfish Platter, Sweet Potato Fries with Mac & Cheese as my sides. I also put in a order for the Spiked Ice Tea which was great. I was elated with the decent sized Catfish. I'm greedy, sue me! Elation turned into a nightmare immediately once I realized that my Catfish was cooked on the outside but slimy on the inside. The Mac & Cheese was store bought either Kraft or Amy's. The Cornbread that came with the platter was delish. I wish they offered a basket of Cornbread. Remember Nickelodeon's Slime Time Show? That's what my four pieces of Catfish reminded me of. I prayed it was just a bad piece and the other three pieces would make up for my disappointment. Welp, hope was thrown out the window and needless to say it was sent back. The waitress understood my plight. She didn't question me or put up a fight. What I found odd is that she had the Catfish Platter the night before and experienced the same thing. With that being said why didn't she give me the heads up?! After sizing up the piece of fish the owner told me a boldface lie about the deep fryer not working properly. The deep fryer was too hot and cooked the outside of the fish but not the inside. He insisted on me trying a piece. Against my better judgement I did. I knew what I was getting into once I sliced a piece to try. Looking at the Catfish I knew it was going to be slimy...AGAIN! Why must I relive this nightmare. I explained to the Owner in a very matter of fact voice that it's not the deep fryer that's an issue. It's indeed the fish that's a problem. I proceeded to ask him about his seafood being frozen or fresh. "Fresh, fresh, yes of course!" Fresh?? Sorry, Papa no it isn't. Your FISH is spoiled, bad, and rotten. I've been to smoke bbq pit several times and I'm definitely not crazy about their BBQ dishes. However they do a really great burger. The smoke house burger is always my go to. It's filled with flavor and to top it off their burgers are so distinct because the bun is soft, sweet and lightly toasted. They also have good drinks be sure to drop in for their great happy hour specials Monday- Friday you won't be let down! Overall staff are all friendly, if you're in a rush I would suggest calling in your order and picking it up so you won't have to wait a while. The food is delicious as usual. The portion size is great. You walk out feeling stuffed. You price is good for the amount of food and taste. Overall it's a good place to grab a bite to eat. The mac and cheese was confusing, appeared baked but the cheese was weird and I couldn't really taste it. Salt and pepper didn't help and it should've. Then the sweet potato pie a la mode. First of all, it was clearly not baked in house, from a box did not include a la mode. I am almost certain it was a Patti Pie, it was pale and clearly needed to be finished in the oven. I should've complained, got my money back but its obvious they need the money. In a party of three (order below), one person received a menu where a dessert they no longer offer was listed, the half slab of pork ribs was at a lower price, and only one menu had the drinks listed. The menu had desserts comes with ice cream, but they don't have ice cream. This venue is listed incorrectly in UberEats as Black-owned when it's not, which should be updated to avoid false advertisement. Order: The house salad, catfish platter with collard greens and macaroni & cheese, half slap ribs (pork) with collard greens and macaroni & cheese, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, tea, sweet tea, and lemonade. The sweet tea and lemonade would not order again. Sweet tea tasted off; either the tea bag was left steeping too long, or ice possibly was off. Lemonade ice may have been off too.
