I noticed this place is listed under different locations on Yelp, so I'll share my experience for both. To start, I was disappointed to find no pit, no open flames -- not even a grill in sight. The kitchen area looked clean, but that's not what I came for. I ordered a medium pit beef and a ham sandwich, both on Kaiser rolls. To my surprise, the food was heated up on a griddle. If I hadn't already paid, I would have left right then and there. The woman who took my order was polite, but frankly, service and friendliness aren't why I visited. I came expecting authentic pit meats, and this place falls short. It's not a smokehouse, nor does it resemble a proper pit beef stand. If you're looking for genuine pit beef, save your money and go elsewhere. I will add this.... The secret sauce is probably really good on some wings! read more

I go out to lunch almost every week with my mother and boyfriend. We thought we would take advantage of the weather cooling a bit and eat outside this week. There are loads of places where we could have gone to eat on a patio somewhere, but places on the water tend to be pricier and not as abundant. So I thought, why not pick up something to go and enjoy one of the zillion amazing public parks we have in the area? We stopped into SmokeHouse Pit Beef and ordered quite a bit of food, and took it to Miami Beach, in Bowley's Quarters. Would completely recommend this park, with a small beach, on Bay Drive (zip 21220). They have a couple picnic tables overlooking the water. You couldn't ask for a better spot for lunch - and you don't have to tip your waiter or deal with other diners. Just clean up after yourself when you leave. I've driven past SmokeHouse PitBeef like a gazillion times in my life, but the poor reviews kept putting it on the backburner for me. But when my mother passed along some coupon flyer she received in the mail I figured what the heck? I like a good meat sandwich. Let's roll the dice. I stayed in the van while my boyfriend and my mom went in to order. They came out with SO MUCH food, claiming that they had gotten buy one get one free sandwiches, and free potato salad. Can't argue with free. They weren't in the store long, about 15 minutes, probably less. Some eerie alarm went off for the neighborhood while they were inside, but they didn't hear it. One of those "this is a test..." but LOUD, throughout the neighborhood, which is near the air guard base... with the klaxon noise, and the not-quite-clear mechanical voice telling you... something... thank God this is only a test... I still don't know what I should do if there's some kind of enemy strike, or the zombies are attacking... It was vaguely like a bad indie horror film. I had the pit beef sandwich with potato salad (Homemade with my mama's recipe!). The sandwich is no Chaps. Tolerable, but I had a difficult time cutting through the meat with my plastic knife. Now before you go getting all riled up about 'who eats pit beef with the fork and knife?' please keep in mind that I am severely disabled and both my hands do not reach my mouth. Holding a big sandwich together and raising it to my mouth is impossible, so I do what I can to get the food into my mouth. But I do think my difficulty cutting through the meat does speak towards its tenderness, or lack thereof. I dressed it with horseradish (which had no kick), barbecue sauce, and raw onions. As for the potato salad, my mama makes better. MUCH better. This was basically potatoes in mayo. Not much flavor, definitely needs at least some boiled egg or sweet relish. Personally I would also add onion, and maybe some celery seed. But then again, I think my mom makes the best potato salad EVER. My mom had Pulled Pork BBQ (Homemade, tender pulled pork with a little Hickory BBQ sauce) with fries. She didn't share or offer a taste (except to the bee that kept buzzing around her at the park), and she finished everything. She must have enjoyed it all, to have kept it all to herself, especially knowing that I think french fries are life. My boyfriend had the pit ham (buy one get one free), which he really enjoyed and some wings - which he said were "hammered" and were thrown away. His favorite was the 8" Pit Beef Hoagie (Cooked to your preference: Rare, medium rare, medium, medium well and well done) which he said was "A-MAZ-ING." It was a really delicious meal, and we had a great afternoon until I got my wheelchair stuck in the sand - ugh, I'm an idiot. Stopped here on the way home from Kayaking, we were standing in the front of the store waiting for quite a few minutes before someone in the back noticed us... another customer left right before we went in, without anything in hand so I guess they lost patience. It was super weird as if the store was closed, and we were inconveniencing them. Anyway, this place is a dive through and through. I can usually look past the clutter and dirtiness, but some other things kind of bothered me here... I noticed the fries were all already cooked so we ordered two things of fries that just got fried again before being bagged for us, they weren't great. Everyone was wearing masks and gloves which I appreciate but one lady who clearly was working in the office or something walked up to the stove and touched some of the meat with her hands.... I worked in the industry so I don't expect my food to not be touched, but there was something about here that it rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe because the sink was right behind the cashier counter and not clearly in the kitchen? Idk, it just felt dirty. They also were selling art on the counter where beverages should be, that was awkward and felt out of place. While we waited for quite a while to get our food, an unusually long time, I saw a sign that said free dog scraps, so we asked for that and we got a really good size thing of meats for our dog in the car! It actually was pretty great. This in itself gets five star review from us! The sandwiches were pretty good too, I enjoyed the turkey and the pit beef was rare, just how my husband likes it. Overall, it really wasn't too bad and this is why it gets three stars which is average, so not amazing, not terrible. Last thought, why do places still use styrofoam? Loose the styrofoam cups please! This was a delivery order. First it wouldn't let me substitute potato salad for fries and beans for coleslaw. Second they make the delivery and I have to sign the receipt but the driver who I believe was also the order taker forgot a pen. Open the bag start pulling everything out no Pepsi. Call the store say where's my Pepsi the driver says sorry I forgot to grab it on my way out can I give you a credit I said no I want my drink I need something to drink and he said it's raining outside it's not safe. In other words f****** won't bring me my drink that I paid for that I don't want credit for I want something to drink and I'm f****** tired of this s*** You bring me what I f****** ordered!!!! This used to be my go to pit beef place. The sides have never been pretty terrible (store bought salads/flavorless, cold french fries) but the sandwiches have always been good. Until recently, when I noticed the beef has started tasting less than fresh and even when requesting "rare" the meat is dry and cooked more well. Not only has the quality of the meat deteriorated recently, the customer service has also never been up to par with other establishments, but has definitely gotten worst recently. With that being said, I will never give this establishment another dime. While COVID was in full swing, I wanted to give privately owned restaurants my business because I knew they were the hardest hit by this. I know most places are understaffed and I sympathize with them - wait times are long and they are stressed, but it doesn't give the manager or the employees the right to be completely disrespectful and demeaning to their customers. Last night was my absolute last straw. My in laws stopped here on their way home and stopped by with sandwiches and platters for the whole family. Upon eating his opened face beef platter, my father in law found that his mashed potatoes were instant, this caught him off guard but didn't bother him much until he went to eat them and found that the inside of the potatoes were completely raw and just a bunch of powder. He decided to call the restaurant to make them aware so they can improve in the future (he truly was not even upset about them being instant - I would have been). The manager replied to his initial comment with "okay?..." and stated that he didn't know what my father in law wanted him to do, he "could not be everywhere at once." He sounded exasperated by the call (which had no ill intent) he then proceeded to cut my father in law off mid-sentence and say, "What exactly do you want from me, do you want to come back for free mashed potatoes?" ...What???? This is not the first time that someone from this establishment had an unnecessary attitude and was not very friendly, but like I said previously; I gave them the benefit of the doubt because of the possible lack of employees. It's just a shame that they have this on-going issue with customer service and quality of food. I really did like this place for a while but I will never waste my money here again. read more

This place is very simple and homey, sort of like a dive. The ribs and pulled pork sandwich were great - they had an interesting sauce that is on the sweeter side. The people working there (possibly owners?) were very nice and helpful and even gave us a taste of their chili. Overall a good example of when simple pays off. read more

I went to get a sub yesterday - my women behind the counter was chatting with a young guy and used ever 4 letter word imaginable. For example - the phone rang and she said 'I'm tired of this shit'..I guess answering a call for someone placing an order. We've lived in Middle River for a few years and driven past this place time and again on our way to or from something. One day they happened to pop a flyer on our door that boasted of delivery. Now, I don't know about you, but most delivery is either Asian in nature or pizza and subs. So... pit beef... coming to my house... while I'm in my jammie jams? How can I say no. We had a tough time deciding what to get so we just got a ton and figured leftovers were the way to handle it. My hubby got the classic pit beef. Tasty, and with the temperature cut he asked for. I got the "house special" shrimp salad sandwich. Holy crap, so good. Now, the cream of crab was awful. I'm a huge fan of Bateman's and I know they use sherry in their soup, so it may have been that missing that took me off guard, but I found it bland. Though the amount of crab in it was acceptable. Fries were clearly cut on site, though slightly soggy. That's ok because we both fork our fries. My husband had gravy on his, and blammo, perfection. This is my first Yelp. I am yelping because I spent my summer in Bowley's Quarters and found out pretty quickly that options for good food are few and far between. This place is small, unassuming, and, quite frankly, in a newly built strip pretty close to a Subway. That said, this place is the real deal. If you grew up in Bowley's Quarters, like I did, you might have spent some time at the Mt. Carmel festival enjoying delicious pit beef sandwiches. Or, you might have grown up on Chap's Pit Beef outside the Gold Club. Either way, you know what constitutes delicious pit beef: A pit, beef served rare, plenty of onions, horse radish, tiger sauce, and rye bread. Smoke House knows pit beef. The owner (at least the guy I think is the owner) is super happy to serve anyone that comes in. I went there at 8:00 on a Wednesday, and he had already put the condiments away. He asked what I liked on my sandwich, and served up perfect amounts of what I wanted on my amazingly delicious sandwich. They are so friendly that they will even give you scraps for your pup, which has made my dog Briscoe very happy. I feel very lucky to have such a high quality pit beef restaurant up the street, and find it a shame that more folks don't know about it! PS they cater football games - and they charge more for Steelers fans - what's not to love? Perfect pit stop for a quick dinner post Harm City men's roller derby bout. I think my friends and I might have overwhelmed the place a bit (party of 7) but our food came out relatively quickly and was overall pretty tasty. This is primarily a takeout place, but we were so hungry we did not care and took over two of their three tables. I got the half rack of ribs combo that comes with fries and slaw, as well as an order of MD crab soup (for under $12 total). The soup was way too salty, but the ribs were good. The ribs weren't as tender as I would have liked, but they were smokey and the sauce was spot on and not too sweet. My friend's seemed to really like their crabcake sandwich platters. Fries were just meh, but the onion rings were to die for. Let me wax rhapsodic a little more about those onion rings. These are fat, perfectly golden rings. I'd say at least an inch thick, evenly battered, and oh so stealable. This place needs a restroom (if only to wash your hands of the BBQ sauce) and some work on their soup and fries. I ordered an open faced sandwich (no bread), container was filled 6/8ths of soggy cold fries (I ordered well done/crispy) & barely 2/8ths small layer of meat! $11.25!!! The scene: on the road from Arlington, Virginia to Bengies Drive-In. Running late since 495 was a parking lot. Tensions rise in the car (for dramatic effect) as we try to decide what to eat in the time remaining before we need to get to Bengies and secure a good parking spot. Do we visit a fast food restaurant? The leading man, your humble author, says, "blech" to this idea. Do we eat at the Drive-In? The sultry woman-of-mystery sitting in the back seat - hence, the mystery...as in, we are not certain when she is awake or asleep during the trip - threatens our lives if we make her eat a luke-warm hamburger. Choice line: "If I'm going to pay a lot for bad-for-you food, I want it to be good bad-for-you food." The young ingenue behind the wheel chimes in; "find something now," voice tinged with a desperation born of hunger. I turn to Yelp. And a lot of local choices that either don't sound very good or would take more time than we have. And then, like a distant castle rising out of the mist - well, like anything in a mist - I see 'Smoke House Pit Beef' with no reviews. That's iffy...but we all agree to try it out. Which turns out to have been a great decision. I had the BBQ beef sandwich, with tender chunks of beef swimming in a sweet-tangy homemade sauce, soaking into a kaiser bun. The ingenue had a pit beef sandwich, that I thought was fine - tender slices of fresh, slightly smokey beef - but that she insisted on squirting BBQ sauce on. Oh well, to each his or her own. Our sultry backseater (stop snickering) had a shrimp salad sandwich (that I didn't try, but that she liked) and the cream of crab soup which was smooth and, well, crabby. Overall, the food was really good, tasty and reasonably priced. The restaurant is a store front with only 3 tables, so, think carry-out. Service is quick and helpful. The owner, who was also manning the counter, had no problem answering numerous questions about what the virus items were and how best to eat them; the young ingenue was having problems deciding what kind of meat she wanted and was resistant to the idea of putting vinegar on her fresh cut boardwalk fries. Love this place. The pit turkey, pit ham & beef BBQ are our favorites. The portions are very generous & the food is just delicious. You can also purchase pit beef, turkey & ham by the pound, which is great for lunches during the week. We've also used their catering services and were extremely pleased. Food isn't very good. Pit beef and turkey are okay.. stick to just that. Every side and dessert I've ever gotten from there has been awful. So bad I threw it away. Macaroni salad- slimy gooey slop. Sugary sweet and would stretch like slime when pulling a fork-full from the container. All their salads are awful, cole slaw, potato salad.. Mac salad. AWFUL. Rice pudding- inedible. I should've taken it back. I'm pretty sure it was bad. Beef BBQ sandwich- awful. Threw it away. Must've made it with dried out beef scraps and hoped to reconstitute it's moisture by letting it sit in BBQ sauce. Didn't work. Bottom line for me is, only having mediocre pit beef and turkey etc. isn't going to cut it. Sides and all the "picnic" foods you like in the spring/summer from a pit beef stand needs to be good too. I'll drive a few more miles to belair rd and Rossville or the legendary place on route 40 by the gentleman's club before I'd ever go here even though living nearby. Was told by several people that I needed to try this place and got the opportunity to try it over the holiday weekend. Sorry to say, this was the first and last visit. I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but the customer service that I received from Jason was deplorable. If you don't like your job or don't want to be there, then call out or quit - don't take it out on the customers that are there to support the business! Regardless of the signs, I felt that the people were very nice and welcoming. The place looked clean. The woman threw my sons frozen chicken strips in with her bare hands and they ended up cold and pink in the middle. They happily corrected it. The beef I ordered a bit pink but it wasn't very hot and even with the BBQ it was a tad dry. The rips were moist and had good taste- good to the bone. For the amount we paid I would have like all the food to be as good as the ribs. This place is more if a carry out so be prepared. read more
