Food Review: Let's start with the brisket. No smoke flavor or smoke ring at all. I was served a very fatty portion that was on the dryer side. Beef Sausage was deep fried again not smoked which is why I came to a "smokehouse". Service Review: The gentleman upfront very cool and accommodating. I asked for a sample of the brisket to determine whether I was going to purchase the 1/2 pound or the pound. As he preceded to get the sample the gentleman (who may be the owner, not sure) in the kitchen told him nah we don't do that. This is the same gentleman that rung up my order and he just wasn't friendly almost annoyed while I was asking questions. Was very excited to find this black owned barbecue restaurant minutes from my home. I was greeted when I walked in. They have a nice amount of seating inside the restaurant and a nice patio area outside, perfect for when the weather is nice. Although I wanted to order everything I started with just the Catfish sandwich and two sides. The fish was very well seasoned and came with a bag of chips. For the price I wish it included a little more like lettuce, tomato or cheese as options for the sandwich. What a welcomed replacement of Woodrow's! I hadn't been in the area for quite a while and was unaware a new place nestled into this location! Decided to check it out! Service was friendly. Their frozen drinks, absolutely amazing! The size for the cost is awesome as well! I had a kiwi apple and we got the strawberry I think watermelon it was. Very very tasty! We grabbed a 2 meat item with sides and a brisket sandwich which was good but for me personally, I like a leaner cut of brisket. I may see if that request can be satisfied next time. It's such a cute little area for a couple blocks that have all types of trendy stuff. Like a little triangular neighborhood. Guy at the counter that served us was super friendly and helpful. The catfish was delicious, seasoned and fried just the way I like it. The Mac and cheese had great flavor and cheesy. It's made with shells instead of elbow pasta. It held the cheese sauce well. The cabbage was good had a down home flavor. My sister said the pulled pork was good but she liked my catfish more. She also liked the candied yams. When the previous bbq place at this location closed, I was fairly sad. There's not a lot of good spots to pop in for lunch. So, I was really excited when this place popped up in that location. It honestly looks identical to the old restaurant, and I suspect someone just took it over. The menu is seemingly the same. I ordered a pulled pork bbq sandwich platter, with fries and mac. It also comes with pickled veggies and a bag of crisps. The sandwich came quickly and was slathered with bbq sauce. The sauce is a bit sweet for me -- honestly it reminds me of "sweet baby ray," and I would not be shocked to find out they're using it -- but it was tasty. The pork was flavourful, though I do wish there was something else on the bun, too. The mac was fantastic, and you can taste the cheeses in the mix. Gouda, I think? Whatever, it's good. It's really rich and I couldn't finish it. Wimp. The pickles are the best part, though they're spicy. Overall, a nice addition to the Mt Wash area. read more

I checked out this newly opened bbq spot for lunch today with a friend. It's a very small operation in which the owner both takes the orders and cooks. He was extremely kind and greeted my friend and me as soon as we walked in. Our food came out pretty quickly (in about 10-15 minutes). I ordered the brisket sandwich with mac and cheese as a side, and my friend ordered the pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese. The first bites of our meals were heaven. I found the meat to be well seasoned and extremely tender. I loved the bbq sauce and wish I had ordered a little extra for my sandwich. It was quite warm in the restaurant, but the heat is honestly miserable everywhere right now so I'm not sure how much of that is on the owner. That was WILD how bad it was. Went out here with my parents for my bday. I think the menu actually seems pretty good, but damn that was the laziest service I've ever seen. I used to work in a BBQ restaurant so I get it sometimes you have to cut corners when the food has been sitting there a while but this was on another level. My mom got the pulled chicken sandwich - and they straight up threw an in tact, bone in chicken thigh between a bun. My dad got the brisket and they gave him more fat than actual meat. I got the jerk chicken that was actually pretty good, but the Mac I ordered with was the driest Mac I've ever tasted and you could tell it had been sitting there for hours. Like I said I've worked bbq before, you should throw that Mac out don't serve that. The actual service was bad too, when my mom asked a question about the sides they got soooo mad that she was even asking a question. I think that's actually ok IF the food is good. But if you're not putting effort into the food at least put effort into talking to customers. Especially when you're charging exceptionally high prices. read more

Being from Oklahoma with family in Texas, I find it very challenging to find good BBQ in Baltimore. No longer! I was in the Mt. Washington area and looked on Yelp for nearby restaurants when Train Stop popped up with great reviews. I expected a small restaurant, but it was tiny with only a few tables for indoor seating. The counter guy explained how I could order on the QR code so I sat at a table and was perusing the menu when the owner came over and said he would just take my order. So nice! Some friendly regulars told me how great this place is while we all waited for our orders. They weren't wrong! The 1/2 Rib meal was YUGE and made for leftovers. The side of black beans was amazing, as were the fries. I'm very picky about beef brisket because usually it's too tough and not flavorful, but this was smoooooth and tender with excellent flavor. It also made for leftovers thank goodness. The mac & cheese was delicious, too. Everything I tried was fantastic. This is a tale of 2 dramatically different visits. The first time we had food from Train Stop it was pretty good, and I would give high marks for the brisket and yams especially. So of course we went back. But wish we had not. The second visit we received brisket the was about 1/3 fat. Large amounts of fat that could easily have been trimmed from the meat. But maybe we were supposed to use that fat to attempt to salvage the smoked wings, which were burnt on the outside and dry on the inside. The sides of yams, mac and cheese, and brussel sprouts were great. But the meat was so disappointing the sides couldn't make up for it. read more

This is more of a takeout place, there are three tables to sit at. You can get a soda or some of their delicious sweet tea. Definitely recommend! I really wanted to like this place as we live locally. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed in our meal. The quality and cost/portion were a bummer. My pulled sandwich was small and rather tasteless and there were no sides or pickled veggies (as described on menu)- just meat on a bun for $16. The Mac and cheese was 90% hardened cheese top and additionally was a very small amount for the $6 charge. The $10 cheesecake was a mini cheesecake, with average taste- I can buy the same quality/size at Whole Foods for 2.99. I'm happy to pay these prices but expect a better quality of food. It was a beautiful evening, so my husband and I walked over with our dog. We sat outside on the cute front porch in the shade. An employee immediately came over and cleaned off the table (which looked fine to us), saying that it gets "dusty" from the wood bin next to it. So nice! I went inside to order and was offered a takeout container of water for our dog while we waited. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and the food came out quickly. My husband got the pulled pork with fries and coleslaw and basically inhaled it. He said the meat was tasty and tender, but a little dry without the sauce (which he liked). I hit the jackpot with the smoked chicken -- a generous two each of very meaty drumsticks and thighs of what tasted like the love child between the good part of TX brisket ("burnt ends") and the best BBQ chicken you ever had. And then there were the sides: BBQ black beans with onions and brisket in the sauce, and a baked Mac n Cheese that tasted like someone's grandma made it. I couldn't even come close to finishing, which was too bad because the desserts looked fabulous (this evening's special was a Creamsicle cheesecake). We also enjoyed the house lemonade, the flavor of which changes daily, and which included a small slice of watermelon in the cup, which was just perfect on a summer evening outside.
