It is unfortunate that I have to give this kind of updated review to a place where I really enjoyed going for barbecue, but it had to be done. My significant other came from out of town to visit me this weekend, and the foodie that he is, I was excited to introduce him to Smoke in the Pit, as their barbecue and catfish have never really let me down in the past, and three years ago, I previously gave the restaurant a five-star review. I called in and placed an order for two combos of tips and fish with baked beans and a small side of fried spaghetti. I also asked that the rib tips be cut small, if they could do that. When I arrived to pick up and pay for the order, I didn't ask for a total or a receipt when I paid for it, as I assumed my order was correct. The owner's daughter handed the bag to me, and I noticed that there was only one order. She called out to her father to let him know that the order was not right. The father came to the pick-up window, and I told him that I ordered two combos. He apologized and said it wouldn't take long to get another order together, maybe about seven minutes (it took longer than that, at least 10-12 minutes, but no big deal). I was annoyed, but I was ok with that, so my significant other and I went back to the car to wait, but at the last minute, my guy changed his mind and decided to go back in and wait for the order. Apparently, after he paid for the second order, the daughter decided to remark to him, "You should have known it wasn't right because of the price!" My significant other replied he wasn't going to argue and just came in to pay for and pick up the second order. He also remarked that he wouldn't be back, and she said nothing. He told me about the incident, and I was so disappointed. Once we got home, his order of fries, which comes with every combo, was missing! I just shared my fries with him. The rib tips were flavorful and did seem to be cut small, as requested, but they were not tender and most of them were charred and hard. My boyfriend said that the flavor of his tips was decent, also, and he really did like the catfish, which I did, too. He felt that the fried spaghetti was too sweet and that he could (and has, indeed, before made) make a better spaghetti dish. He hated the barbecue sauce, which I warned him was not the best, and I never used it on my tips, and asked me to throw it away. He didn't even bother to try the baked beans. The daughter's behavior, I felt, was very rude, and that comment was unnecessary. If anything, she should have also apologized for the oversight. It was a bit of an embarrassment to introduce my boyfriend to this restaurant for the first time and have this happen. It also seems, according to other recent reviews, that SITP has gone downhill severely in quality of food and service. Sadly, I don't know if I will return. read more

Just.... dang it. Having tried their food, I now understand why their reviews are so far located on opposite sides of the spectrum. This place has the potential to be THE BBQ joint in Minnesota. Like so many others I have tried, it has failed. Unlike the others, they have found new ways to disappoint. I will go line item by line item concerning what my group tried, so you too can join in on the "fun". Greens: This was actually the high point of the meal. Some reviews state the Greens are overly sweet. Though I do agree them Greens need some heat, I would not classify them as "overly" sweet. Mac 'n' Cheese: The reviews are correct, this is macaroni and black pepper, with a cheese-like-substance garnish. Skip this and just make your own with Velveeta. Corn bread: We received tightly packed sand pretending to be corn bread. Incredibly dry, and hard as stone. Fried Chicken Wings: You know those Tyson breaded chicken wings in the frozen food section of the grocery store? Those, of a lower quality, but with the added bonus of the wing tip (yes I do enjoy wing tips). Skip these. Smoked Chicken Wings: We were enjoying these actually. The texture was good, a bit on the dry side, but good. Nice smokey flavor. The flavor over all could use more seasoning, but these wings had the making of something to return to. And then we found it. Like other Yelpers before us, we found unplucked feathers on the Smoked Chicken Wings! Never have I or any others in my group experienced this from a restaurant. An auntie from down south occasionally, but an establishment?! What the flying cluck! Fries: This one is quick. Overly greasy and lack of seasoning. Ribs and Rib Tips: I am grouping these two together, as we had similar comments about both. Both the Ribs and Rib Tips lacked any semblance of flavor. I mean, salt could have improved these things. The sauce that comes on the side is a ketchup and vinegar based concoction of nastiness we threw in the trash immediately. Now, the Ribs and Rib Tips though a bit overcooked (liked the Smoked Chicken Wings), still maintained a nice texture. We salvaged the Ribs and Rib Tips by throwing them in large containers, tossing some good ol' Stubb's BBQ Sauce in there to give them a rub down, then consumed the meat. Feel free to skip this place and any other "BBQ joints" in this state, as I am finding it impossible to discover any good BBQ here. I ordered cole slaw as the 1 side with my meal and 1 large side order of cole slaw. I did not get the cole slaw as ordered I received greens. How do you get greens from cole slaw? If they were out of the cole slaw they should of called me instead of just giving me the greens. I would of canceled the order if they would of informed me about this. The macaroni was tasteless. Some of the best barbecue I've had in Minneapolis although kind of a strange place. Walking in, you are in a small room and you order through what is basically a drive-thru window for people, and you can see straight into the kitchen. Once the order is placed, you kind of hang out until your food is ready. No chairs (no space for chairs) so if its busy and you have someone who isn't comfortable standing, I'd suggest having them wait in the car. My friend and I both got the wings and ribs combo with beans and mac and cheese. The wings are good, the ribs are outstanding. Next time I'd skip the wings and go straight to the ribs. Baked beans were good, but mac and cheese was more like pasta with some cheese flavoring, not very cheesy at all. Normally I would hate this, but the flavor was still pretty good. Tried Smoke In The Pit for the first time. My husband smokes meat and we've both been to Memphis and tasted BBQ from some of the greats. The smoked wings, what they're famous for, were so good they made me wanna be a better person. We asked them to fry a couple smoked wings which I highly recommend- you get the best of both wings! We also tried the pulled pork sandwich. The meat was tender and so flavorful, they also add bacon-nice touch! The greens were some of the BEST I've ever had. The fries were crispy and well seasoned. Corn bread was crazy good- sweet crispy outside, crumbly and so tasty! The dry rub ribs were very good. The sauce goes well with everything. I've been here a few times now and have begun to dig it. I was hesitant at first because my go-to rib joint is only a couple of miles away and I've been going there since 1971. Now though, I see SITP has their good qualities too, and it's right across from the coffee shop I frequent. I've had the ribs, fried and smoked wings and a few of the sides and they're all good. I like their sauce too. I generally don't care for fries that have a coating but these are fine. It is take-out but in the warm weather they have a couple of tables out front. I've tried this new BBQ spot enough to be able to draw some comparisons between it and the obvious alternative by proximity, Ted Cook's. Both Smoke in the Pit [SP] and Ted Cook's [TC] are strictly take out. TC has a larger waiting area with a few chairs. SP accepts only cash while you can use Visa or MC at TC. I found the ribs at SP quite comparable to TC. I prefer the sauces at TC. I prefer the jojos (ordered extra crispy!) and slaw at TC over the seasoned fries and slaw at SP. I also prefer the dense, cinnamon laden version of peach cobbler at TC (I like to add a scoop or two of French Vanilla ice cream to the warm cobbler when I get home) to the flakier, lighter version at SP. Now, here's where Smoke in the Pit separates itself from Ted Cook's. The smoked chicken wings. They are absolutely addictive. Moist and bursting with flavor. They don't need sauce although they certainly would stand up well to whatever you may prefer whether from SP, commercial sauce out of the bottle or your own concoction. TC offers nothing like them. I only wish they had a bit more meat on them but that's really a quibble. Prices are a bit lower at SP but so are the portions so it may be a wash. I find the counter service at both SP and TC to be friendly but SP has a more family vibe. In short, how great is it to now have these two places so close together from which to choose? My mouth waters and my stomach starts to growl just thinking about turning off Hiawatha and heading West on 38th street. read more

Having lived in both St. Louis and Kansas City, as well as traveling frequently to Memphis for work, my expectations for barbecue are fairly high to say the least. The only problem I've had with the incredibly diverse and delicious Twin Cities food scene is the lack of a top class barbecue joint, so when I stumbled across the stellar reviews for Smoke in the Pit, I was both excited and cautious at the same time. Sorry other Minneapolisites, but you just don't have a lot of comparisons in the barbecue space. With that said, Smoke in the Pit is legit. They're literally just a little hole in the wall. You go up to the counter, order what you want, and wait for 20-30 minutes while they put your order together. There's no seating, at least during the winter, so expect to take your food elsewhere (we took ours back to Calhoun). Between the two of us, we ordered the catfish nuggets meal with fries and coleslaw, a bucket of rib tips, and a dozen smoked wings. The catfish nuggets were wonderful, fried lightly on the outside and flaky on the inside. They didn't have that overly fishy taste that can come from lower grade catfish. The fries and coleslaw were just average. I've had better of both. The rib tips and smoked wings are where SITP really shined, though. The meat on the rib tips literally fell off the bone as I brought them to my mouth. They were great dry and even better with a little dab of Smoke's barbecue sauce, a tangy, slightly spicy concoction that was perfect for mixing with the smoky (obviously) taste of the meat. The smoked wings were upper echelon levels of meat. As good as everything was, these were the only items that were truly comparable to the best of the big BBQ cities. Whatever they use for their rub is divine and somehow manages to be salty, smoky, savory, and slightly citrusy all at the same time. The chicken is fall-from-the-bone tender. If I ever come back to SITP, I'll be ordering a couple dozen of these and calling it good. After being cautiously optimistic before my visit to Smoke In The Pit, I can say that this joint gets a seal of approval from this barbecue snob. While this place might get lost among the dozens of top notch meat-slinging restaurants in KC or STL, it's definitely at least 4.5 star barbecue in the BBQ-starved Minneapolis area. read more

I normally am totally grossed out by meat on bones, but I went with it. It came with a handful of fries and a choice of beans or coleslaw. I asked the lady working which side I should get and she said the beans were best with the smoked wings. Done. AND only $7.75. 6 wings! So, I waited a bit. maybe 10 minutes. Yes, the cashier had a small child in the back who kept wailing. Yes, I heard her arguing with someone else back there. But hey, it worked. I got my order in the time they told me it would take, was thanked profusely by Dwight himself, and set on my journey home. Fries: Awesome. Nice batter, some sort of seasoning. Dipped 'um in sauce. I'll get to that later. Beans: Tasty, a little unique. Maybe green peppers in them? Not my favorite beans, but still very tasty. BBQ Sauce: I was curious about this because a lot of people didn't care for it. I got it on the side (and it was a huge container!) just in case. I have never had anything like it. I loved it. Went to Smoke in the Pit on a whim tonight and it was a great decision. First off, it's a little hole in the wall that doesn't have any seating. The owner's son Dwight took my order and gave some great suggestions. We decided to go with a slab of ribs, a pound of brisket, and an order of smoked chicken wings The brisket was the highlight. It was thinly sliced and perfectly moist. Not too moist, but not dry by any means. It had great flavor and went well with their barbecue sauce. The sauce was sweet/tangy/spicy all at the same time which was a great flavor experience that went well with all facets of the meal. Next up, the ribs were very good. I won't go out and say they were the best I've ever had though. Some of cut up pieces were excellent and the near fell off the bone. Others seemed a little tougher which could've had to do with what side of the rib it was on. However, with their homemade sauce it all tasted great. Finally, there smoked wings were a unique experience. The outside shell of the wings was delicious to eat by itself and the chicken itself was pretty good with the sauce. We also had a side of beans that were really good. Hard to describe the flavor, but they were spicy and sweet similar to the barbecue sauce. Moving into a house nearby, I stopped by on a fall Saturday and told owner, Dwight, that I had 8 hungry people who had just helped me move and 5 of them didn't eat pork. We ordered the 3 fried wings/3 ribs combos and 3 extra smoked wings. Since they freshly fried all their wings to order, expect about 10 minutes wait or you can always call in your order. Smoked wings and ribs were really smokey. The ribs were a little dry. The sauce that came with the ribs tasted like sweetened ketchup. Fried chicken wings had really crispy skin. However, they were slightly under-seasoned. The skin which had a touch of seasoning was wonderful, but the meat was bland. Surprisingly, my favorite was the baked beans. Four stars but not for the BBQ. I've been coming to this literal hole in the wall for the best part of a year now and they're always great. The q could be better for sure, the ribs are good but missing that special bark that Austin BBQ is known for, the brisket is a no go for me and I have yet to touch the pulled pork. The ribs are for sure a 3 star but the real hero at smoke in the pit are the wings and catfish. The fried wings are incredibly outstanding, they do take a little wait but are incredibly worth it. The smoked wings as well, incredible if they haven't yet sold out. I'll frequently get a dozen even though I won't eat them all in one sitting and shred the meat the following day for a great smoked chicken salad. First off, let me say that the fries were delicious! Unfortunately, the quantity was quite smaller than I would have liked. I think the thing I liked the most about this place was the price. I wish I had known you could order just pieces of protein (fish filet) instead of having to order a big dinner). I attached a picture of the full menu. The food itself was impressive for a little shack. The smoked meats (we had the wings and rib tips) had great flavor. We had both the fish fillets and the nuggets and would recommend the filets instead. Fries were good as well. The food was an 8 out of 10, but it would be hard to beat the value you get here.
