First time visiting. Was brought by a coworker for a lunch meeting. The sandwich I had was amazing! I didn't pay so I can't comment on price. I ordered the tri tip sandwich and it was delicious! The vodoo chips and the soda I had were also great. The sandwich was a decent size. The few negatives... Not very many choices period. The items they do have are done extremely well. I was able to look at the meat selection and had sticker shock. Maybe if I purchase in the future and justify the price I will change my mind. No fountain drinks either I think. Who makes the best sandwiches, you know the kind that you remember for a lifetime? The answer varies for everyone but I think we can all agree if a butcher serves food, start there. As a child growing up in Charleston SC, I would visit my Italian relatives in Connecticut who owned a butchery. If you're thinking the mob & Goodfellas, unfortunately you're not far off. That said I still remember the smells, all the charcuterie, the fresh mozzarella, meatballs, etc. They would slice slivers of meat and sometimes blindfold me so I could tell the Soppressata, Mortadella, Proscuitto, apart. Their "grinders" are the reason I'm so picky about my cold subs to this day. Back to the review. After leaving Witte museum across the street my kids and I were hungry. Generally, I let them chose what to eat when I have the chance to see them, but today they didn't get a vote. We were going to Smokeshack Delicatexan. We crossed the intersection which fortunately wasn't that busy and walked up to the front doors. A couple things to note, first this isn't a bad part of town and they have a larger sit down restaurant beside it that focuses on BBQ. Opening the door, the aromas instantly hit the nose, tickling it with all kinds of cured meats, exotic cheeses and fresh cuts of premium quality meats such as steaks, pork loins, etc. Being a former chef, I engaged in some banter thinking I would pick up a rack of lamb while there. Alas they're cutting down on their variety and lamb seems to be one of the causalities which is a shame b/c lamb is so darn good. I'm somewhat kicking myself b/c I eyeballed a perfectly marbled ribeye for 5 minutes and didn't purchase it. The butcher was kind enough to slice a little of a couple meats for me and the kids to sample. It was simply bliss and perfection. Also note there are lots of other items to purchase, stacked to the ceiling that one can't find at HEB such as local sauces, honey, wood chips, etc. I highly advise taking a while and let your imagination run wild with possibilities. After our small talk all three of us ordered the cold Italian as it had the most homemade meats all on freshly baked hoagie rolls and dressing. The food came out quickly and we all acted like the dinosaurs at the museum. The bread had a nice crunch while pillowy soft in the middle. The meats were proportioned right as they weren't just a brick, rather perfectly sliced layers and marbled with fatty cured goodness. My kids opted for the provolone however I got the fresh mozz. Both were great but I believe mine was divine. I will admit the sandwiches could have been elevated even more if they were to opt for 100% shredded lettuce rather than a whole leaf and some shredded. The reason is shredding adds a certain familiar texture while a whole leaf, might be trendy, but it competes with the meat rather than elevates it. As a personal preference I like a miniscule amount of thin cut red onion. Those huge chunks of onions are too much and dominate the heat and crunch. Side note, my kids don't like tomatoes, so on a 6" "sub" I had 6 tomato slices and since the produce was so fresh, it added even more moisture which was fine by me. Unfortunately, I don't live in SA but close to Austin which means I have pretty good options closer to home. Otherwise, this establishment might be my go-to sub shop and butcher. While I can't offer much insight on many of the other options, I can say with pretty good confidence that I believe all menu items will be a fantastic choice. Please note the prices are ever so slightly higher but that's b/c you're getting premium quality meats as apposed to any other sandwich alternatives which utilize meat glues and preservatives in their products to last longer. I definitely recommend dropping by Smokeshack Delicatexan for a sandwich experience unlike any other or to splurge on the best cuts of meat you can buy anywhere. read more

I got the tri tip sandwich. I added an extra garlic aioli mixed with there homemade hot sauce that was on the table. The sandwich was delicious. It had a healthy amount of steak and the arugula was a nice touch. My only complaint is that the tri tip was not cut against the grain which made the sandwich harder to eat and less tender to chew. read more

Grass fed options are available which is great if you are looking for something a little healthier. The butcher added that bone is available if you want to make your own stock. They have a small selection of local farm-raised items, jams, jellies, salsas, chilis, and a few drinks in the area to the right as you walk in as well. The sausage selection is where the real tasty stuff is. They have a smoke shack, jalapeño, and types of white sausage links available by the pound. Usually four links will be about 1.25 lbs. I was able to get four links of the smoke shack sausage and about a hand-sized triangle of cajun honey specialty cheese for about $25. What a great unexpected one Stop shop for dinner! I absolutely didn't realize all they had. My husband sent me there to get steaks better than the commissary quality and we were not disappointed. Yes it's expensive but you could compromise and get some thing like the Denver cut for only $14 a pound or really splurge for a nice waygu beef for $50 a pound. They had more delicious sides than I knew what to do with including bacon mac & cheese and smoked baked beans. They had a great selection of complementary wines and local beers. 08/03/2019 1500, after much debating I ordered the Grilled Cheese and Brisket sandwich with a side of Collard Greens. I was asked if I wanted a drink and I said "sure". The sweet girl at the register (Aaliyah) asked me "bottle or can?" I said bottle, thinking it would be the normal plastic bottle of Coke I normally buy. To my dismay it was a glass bottle...then I was told it was a "Mexican Coke". I declined after I was told it was stronger than regular Coke....wtf...I don't need something that will dissolve my stomach before I even eat. I got the can. I went to my table and was immediately excited! I saw someone scrawled "EMILY JONES" on a small pillar next to my table with a Sharpie, (The restaurant is known for this..you can go and graffiti up the joint with your John Hancock or pretty much anything I guess). This was cool because my last name is Jones and I had lunch with a semi coworker whose 1st name is Emily! When my food arrived I was blown away...1st because it didn't look anything like it was advertised (I was very disappointed actually and ready to complain to whoever is the owner or manager) and 2nd my Annabel. She brought my food with the hugest smile and beautiful personality I think I have ever seen. It was not just the way she interacted with me but the way she treated all the guests there, it felt genuine and calmed me to he point that I didn't even care about the discrepancy in the food presentation. The food was good, I had the Grilled Cheese sandwich with greens like I said, and actually ordered a pulled pork sandwich to go, but the food was 2nd to Annabel's AWESOME personality. Our school team decided to have BBQ after our professional development since we were not able to stop on the way to Fundamental 5 National Conference from Dallas. Parking is located in front of the establishment and looks to be limited if there is a large crowd. As you enter you place your order and the meal is brought to you. I ordered the 3 meat plate with a side of okra. When you ask for a drink with your meal it's only tea not fountain drinks. The customer service could have been friendlier but you can see its a family run business since high school kids are taking your order and cleaning up. The food arrived quick to the table. The brisket was tender and the smoke could be tasted. The ribs were real tender and the smoke could be tasted in each bite. The portions were big so I couldn't eat the chicken. The inside has a outdoor feel with wood benches and TV's were placed all around. This is a worthwhile visit and prices were agreeable. read more

I've heard SO much about these, but I finally got to try a couple dozen for myself. I walked in, not expecting to find much at the eleventh hour before Christmas, but Texans are out here making dreams come true for all of us who are PERPETUALLY late to the party. Great market and great location. For those of us that live in town this is a super place to get Akaushi beef.

The quality of the meat selection here is top-notch. They also have delicious side options, beverages, and pickled goodies. Try the Dean and Peeler Ribeye! You can't go wrong with their risotto. Find it in the fridge section to the right-hand side. The price is a little steep for the accoutrements, but it is definitely worth it. The only complaint I have for this place is the men behind the counter. The times I have been in without my husband, they assume that a woman isn't familiar with picking cuts of steak and what a marbling score is, which is a little annoying. But I would much rather get more information than I need than not enough information to make a decision. The food is of a quality that can be served to guests and would also be ideal to take along to a pot-luck, or take into an office for a special reward or recognition employee luncheon, or a great comfort to friends who may be temporarily unable to cook for themselves. I have tried and enjoyed their delicious pot roast (tender, savory), shepherd's pie (hearty and flavorful), smoked turkey (lean and light, delicious), risotto (savory and custard-like), Bolognese sauce... all uniformly delicious.
