This review is not really from me but more of my families reviews. I am a vegan and also gluten intolerant, so there were a total of two items (side dishes) that I could eat. I had the fire-roasted​ veggies and the cucumber and tomato salad. Both were just ok, the cucumber tomato salad could have had more flavor/vinegar in it. The veggies were alright, but ​​I​ would have liked them to be a little more smokey tasting. If you are vegan and GF I would highly suggest eating before you come here! As for my meat and gluten loving family,​ they were so happy with the food! My grandpa raved about the corn pudding and everyone loved their sandwiches and mac and cheese! It is a cool restaurant with plenty of seating, we came in at 1:30 on a Sunday and the 6 of us were quickly sat and served. The food and service were both good. It is damn hard to find good ribs, and this place delivers. They aren't the best ribs I've ever had, but taste is subjective and I will still enjoy eating them every time I come here. Choices, choices, choices. They have St. Louis and baby back ribs, and both are equally good. I recommend the St. Louis style because they do them well here. They have a lot of meat on the bones and are very tender, so I see no reason to get the baby backs. Get them dry rubbed and douse them in your favorite sauce after they arrive at the table. We stopped in here for lunch on Memorial Day after perusing through the artistry at the Alpharetta Street Arts Festival, which closed early due to the threat of imclement weather. From the beginning, the hostess staff were nice and welcoming. They were beautiful ladies who vibrant smiles. They took our name and we didn't have much of a wait before being seated. I order the Fried Pickles Appetizer which was so delicious. They had some of the most delicious and hot fried pickles I've ever had. The Aioli served with them was so, so good. It was Mayo based and had just the right hint of spicyness that made it all the more enjoyable. Our waitress was knowledgeable of the menu and was appropriately attentive. She was so good and nice. I ordered the Pick-3 plate and ordered the ribs for a little bit of an upcharge, pulled pork, and smokes sausage. The ribs were tender and hot. They were almost falling off the bone they were so good and tender. The BBQ was sweet, which is true to Georgia BBQ. The pulled pork was delicious as will--well-cooked and well-seasoned. The smoked sausage was hot. Everything was appropriately sized. The macaroni and cheese was cheesy and delicious. It was SO good! Also, I ordered the baked beans, were, were likely the on let-down of the meal because there was just a little too soupy and not sweet enough. Also, we Georgians like our baked beans to have a cinnamon and brown sugar taste with pits of either beef or pork, and these were not like that. Overall, this was an excellent BBQ experience for Memorial Day in quaint and charming downtown Alpharetta that appears to be a hit with locals. I will definitely return. Bravo. Sweeten up those baked beans, y'all, and don't be stingy with the meat in them, either. :-) read more

Ok, coming from someone who doesn't even like American BBQ, I really enjoyed this place. We were considering catering through them, so my husband and I came for dinner the week before to try everything. I think we ordered just about every single kind of meat, side and dessert on the menu. Surprisingly, our fav was the beef brisket; it was super moist, tender and tasty with the right amount of fall-apart meat and fat. The wings were our least favorite... well tied with the chicken breast; the wings were just very dry. The wet ribs were good, too. BEST side was the mashed sweet potatoes. I'd skip the coleslaw as others had said in reviews. BOTH desserts, the chocolate coke cake and the banana pudding were AMAZING. We ended up catering with them and the party was a huge hit (with tons of leftovers, yay for us!). The manager was a huge help in helping us figure out how much to order and how to make sure everyone would be fed well and save us some $. :) read more

I gave a generous 3 stars only because the building is pretty (outside) and the server was really good. We ordered brisket fries and a pulled pork plate. The brisket fries were good, not like I'll come back for them good.. but good. The pork plate was the ultimate disappointment. The pork was dry and tasteless. The sides I chose were Mac and cheese and baked beans with bacon. Mac and cheese had no taste at all and the beans had no bacon.. the beans tasted like they were from a can. I am always cautious when I order a plate of BBQ and the meat comes smothered in sauce. Is it that the meat doesn't have much flavor or is dry? Don't really know if either of these things are true here as all I could taste was the sauce. Unfortunately the sauce is average at best. I am kind of bummed as I was really looking forward to some great pulled pork. If you are as well, you might try someplace that is proud of their meat and doesn't kill it with sauce like this place does. The collard greens were fantastic. Too bad that isn't what I came for. Ordered online for some lunch today. I ordered the Cobb salad. No meat. (I'm vegetarian). Ok cool. 10 mins. Good got picked up. There was bacon on my salad. Ok. Took it back. Brought back the second time. Same salad. Bacon had been taken off with crumbles left on the salad. I can't eat that. It would make me sick. I walk back over to smoke jack. I told Marcy Gardner. That they didn't replace the salad. They just took it off. I explained I was vegetarian. I can't eat meat. She didn't like that I said they just took it off. I said. She then said.I'm just A manager. What do you want me to do. Ok. Then David the long haired manager came out. I said I want a refund just on the one salad. Ok. Then he refunded my whole order. Didn't ask him to. I take the receipt and I walk outside to go back across the street. Marcy chases after me saying. I owe 14.52 for the salad. I said. I why do I still owe for a salad I sent back. I said I came across from work. With no wallet. Sister comes over with card. Go back inside to pay for yet another salad I never got to eat. David said nope don't worry about it. Worst experience I've ever had in the service industry. To a fellow service industry worker. Then was told I was banned because I asked for a refund. And told them I couldn't eat a salad they took off something I couldn't eat and handed me the same salad. Not sure why it couldn't be remade. Smokejack has really good bbq and I love the location right in downtown Alpharetta. A good bbq restaurant can smoke meats well but a GREAT bbq restaurant makes great side dishes. The corn pudding was amazing and a star of the show. The pork sausage was really good too kinda tasted like a hot link especially pairs with their hot bbq sauce which honestly has an nice spice profile without being overly spicy. The dry rub ribs were also another star of the show! Many of the bbq restaurants in GA I find myself using quite a bit bbq sauce but here I used next to none and mainly just because it was my first time here. Alright here's the story. I lived in the Alpharetta area for a couple years, and I loved smokejack for the best BBQ and drinks (it's been awhile but that blueberry lemonade was FIRE) and their Corn Pudding was one of my favorite things on the menu. Well last thanksgiving, I wanted to make my own. All of the recipes online though don't look like theirs, and even though I live across the country now in Washington, I called the manager and left a message. Basically pleading with them to share their recipe with little old me. They were kind enough to let me in on their secret. Now last years didn't turn out. Although this thanksgiving, after some tweaking... I nailed it. So even though I'm 3000 miles away, I'll support this business till the end of time. I was originally going to get a take out order from Hops next door, but I was curious about this place so I checked out their Yelp reviews. One of the reviews I read described a sandwich that sounded amazing -- it was a smoked turkey sandwich on ciabatta. When I called I discovered they no longer serve that sandwich. I read their turkey Cuban sandwich was amazing so I ordered one to go. When I arrived all I could smell was delicious barbecue. The hostess was friendly and my meal was ready to go! The restaurant was clean and inviting. Let me tell you -- I like to post pictures on Yelp, but this sandwich was SO amazing I couldn't put it down long enough to take a picture! I ordered the Cuban turkey sandwich which came on Cuban bread. It was topped with Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard. The turkey was fresh and had an outstanding smoked flavor which I enjoyed. The bread was fresh and crispy. I ordered cole slaw as my side. As with everything else, the cole slaw was fresh, tangy, and crispy. This was awesome food! read more

We have been to Smoke Jack 10x at least and have always been satisfied, but all good things must come to an end it it did yesterday. My husband, adult children and myself stopped to have a drink and appetizer after a long walk. We ordered at the window and took a seat outside. We ordered the brisket nachos. When the nachos arrived they were in a long covered plastic container, no prob there, but when we opened and started eating YUCK! They were literally ice cold!!! They were definitely premade and refrigerated. I asked my husband to take them back and ask for hot ones. He bought them back to the window with the cover on them and asked for a fresh order. After about 5 mins someone on the staff came out to tell us we were not going to get "fresh" ones cuz they were too expensive to make per customer. He alleged they were not refrigerated but 100% they were ice cold. He said we can get you a new order if we wanted. I said tongue in cheek, just bring the old ones back and he literally went to the window and brought back the SAME ONES!! Are you kidding me!!! At the least he should have had the kitchen make a fresh order. We were the only customers there at the time 3:30pm! Terrible CUSTOMER SERVICE! We get it Covid rules are the worst but at least try and make your customers that are spending $15 on freaking nachos happy! A vegetarian giving a BBQ restaurant five stars.... what is the world coming to? Obviously, I haven't eaten the BBQ here. But the sides! Ohhhh, the sides... We had Smokejack BBQ cater our rehearsal dinner, and people are still talking about how great the food was! And it truly was delicious. I didn't try the BBQ, but I can say the 30 other BBQ lovers gave it the thumbs up. As for all the amazing sides - the grilled vegetables, mashed sweet potatoes, four-cheese mac'n'cheese, and corn pudding - they were all outta this world. I'm not a baked bean fan, either, but apparently those were good, too. The owner is super nice guy who is Serious. About. Food. Had the Meatloaf special at the bar for lunch today. Run, don't walk to get to Smokejack before they sell out! How can you go wrong with bacon wrapped smokey meat goodness. Last weekend, I decided to venture out to other parts of the metro atl area...and that landed me in Alpharetta. This restaurant is located in their downtown area...very nice and walkable type of area. I can now X this place off my of list of bbq places to try out. Since I simply went out there to try this place out, I ordered a few things to sample and review. Ribs - Probably the toughest ribs I've had since I've lived down here. I never had to pull so hard to get meat off of a bone. No real flavor. Sauce was way too light. Just all around bad. Mac n Cheese - Nothing special. Taste was pretty standard Corn Pudding - What the hell is this garbage they're serving? Absolutely nasty (IMO). Its soft n wet tasting, with a bunch of corn kernels in it. No thanks. Burnt Ends Burger - This thing is packed with a ton of flavor. Its gets a bit messy, but its cool. My only gripe is that everything is soft...no contrast in textures. The texas toast used should be toasted much longer to give it some crunch. Other than that, its a good idea and a good sandwich. Can't pay me to come back to this spot. read more

Just a warning to people who might expect this food to actually resemble good, real BBQ. It doesn't! Every single item of food we had tasted like it had come out of a bag. We tried the brisket and burnt ends. The brisket may have started life as brisket but by the time we got it it was bland, tasteless, and the consistency was 'unique'. The burnt ends shouldn't even be called burnt ends; they were cubes of meat (we think it was pork) drowning in sauce. We tried the grits (tasted like plain, boring grits), the corn bread (ugh), the grilled veg (cooked to death, mushy and flavorless) and the mashed sweet potatoes (overly sweet but passable). The unsweet iced tea and diet coke were ok though! This is a warning to all ITPers or people that have eaten good BBQ in other cities: this is not good BBQ. Best I can describe it is like hitting the BBQ section over at the Golden Corral. Its family-friendly and has a decent atmosphere (like a Chilis) but please beware of the reviewers here who claim its the best around. Try BBQ1 down the road and get some education! read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a looong time. I have to say- I was sorely disappointed. I am a huge bbq fan. I wouldn't say I'm an expert on it- but I love all kinds of bbq. Sauce on, dry rub, korean, mongolian you name it. So first bad impression- I call in my order, taken by who I assume to be the bartender after seeing him in person. I call back 2 minutes later to ADD something to my order and a different guy answers- a super annoyed sounding man. When I ask if I can add something he lets out this gruff sigh- like he's not sure he wants to add something else to my ticket? Why the heck not? Anyway- he's so condescending- Asking me "Um, are you SURE you're calling the right place?" Then yells to someone in the background "Did you take a to go order?! Here!" And apparently throws the phone at someone. I ordered ribs, corn pudding and grilled veggies. My husband got a combo platter with burnt ends, chicken and brisket and coleslaw. I also like to try brunswick stew at each bbq place I eat at- I feel like it's a measure of their overall care and skill. The meats: Brisket- the only thing I would go back for if I would ever consider going back. It was super tender and actually held up to reheating the next day. Burnt ends: Pretty tender in the middle- but hard and dry on the outside. Not the char-crust you really want to see. A little heavy on the smoke taste for me. Like artificial smoke was added. Ribs- Not that great. They were very meaty but SUPER SALTY! I had a hard time eating them. They sauce them but provided no extra sauce on the side. Did not hold up to reheating or eating cold. They were really smelly the next day. Sides: Corn pudding- I liked this the best but it was severely lacking in salt. (The only thing lacking in salt). Grilled veggies- the smoke taste was soooo strong I couldn't even eat them. And it wasn't like nice slices and chunks of grilled veggies- it was like stewed in a pot with artificial smoke. I recently moved from Texas to Georgia, and have had to adapt to a bunch of pork-BBQ as opposed to Beef. But Smokejack did them both perfectly. My daughter had the pulled pork sandwich and LOVED it. I had the Chopped beef brisket sandwich, and I was very, very pleased. It had a great flavor and you could really taste the smoke. (In the good way!) My husband tried the burnt ends and found them "heavenly". We destroyed the mac n cheese, which was super duper cheesy, the beans were ok, not exactly seasoned in the way I prefer, but that's subjective. We also liked the fries, but I'd like to try the corn pudding next time. By the time we finished, we were way too stuffed for dessert, but we got a banana pudding anyway. And then we killed it. We murdered it. It was insanely good. The manager even came by our table to ask us how they were doing, and then engaged us in a great conversation about BBQ. We had a terrific experience, and even though it's a bit of a drive for us, we will be back. read more

Sadly, Smokejacks is no longer the great place that it used to be, and I don't really recommend it anymore. The general style of food is unchanged, but the quality isn't what it once was. I ate at Smokejack's many years ago when it first opened up in Alpharetta. I remember going with a group of friends at the time and enjoying the food and the ambiance and I specifically remember a great plate of beef tips and gravy over mashed potatoes. Unfortunately I also remember it was somewhat expensive (at the time I was starting a new business and didn't have money to spend on expensive dinners out). Fast forward nearly 10 years: My date and I were wanting to try someplace new for dinner and I suggested Smokejack. First of all I'll point out that this is a restaurant in downtown Alpharetta, which, right now is seriously under construction. There is limited parking and if you aren't lucky enough to get a space right up front, you'll need to park on a side street and walk back up. It's not a big deal unless it's raining (as it was last night). Walking in, the first thing I noticed was that the atmosphere was extremely casual, family oriented, almost cafeteria feeling (despite having a full bar over to the left). The staff all seem extremely young (high school / college age) and seemed either timid or giggly and not quite sure the best way to do their jobs. Not bad or impolite, just tentative. We were seated immediately and ordered drinks - beer for my date, wine for me. Now, far be it from me to complain about being served a large glass of wine, but I've never been to a restaurant before where they filled a standard sized wine glass to within 1/2" of the brim. The usual wine pour is 6 oz and this must have been easily 10 oz. (Again, I think this was due to young, inexperienced staff.) We also had to ask for glasses of water to be brought. I don't expect them to be brought automatically, but it would be nice to be asked. We asked for a few minutes to read the menu before ordering, but then our server seemed unsure of when to return. After watching her walk past our table several times, we finally had to flag her down to tell her we were ready. We ordered salads and main courses. The salads came out promptly (his mixed greens and mine a wedge) and were good. However, within 3 mins of our salads coming out, there was our server with our main dishes. (The staff needs to be taught to stage meals so that food comes out nicely spaced.) He ordered the "Mojo" platter with ribs, brisket, and burnt ends, and I ordered the burnt ends with mashed potatoes and collards. The food was served "cafeteria style" - a platter of meat with individual bowls of ice cream scoops of potato and greens. Not what I was expecting based on what I remembered. The burnt ends were good, but they were more like chunks of regular meat in sauce - I didn't get a lot of that crispy burnt end flavor. The potatoes were bland and if it weren't for the lumps I'd have thought they were from a box mix. The collards were the best thing on the plate - cooked tender and tasting of bacon and red pepper. After we finished our dinner and were leaving the restaurant, we noticed an entire board of "specials" hanging on the wall behind our table, which is too bad because we'd probably have ordered those over ordering off the menu, but our server never pointed them out or said anything about them. Overall review: The food is average, the ambiance is cafeteria, and the service needs a lot of work (And again I want to stress that no one was rude or bad, just untrained and unsure of what to do, which is a management issue, not a staff issue). For what we wound up paying ($80, including tip), I can only give it a 2* rating. read more

I was pleasantly surprised on my first visit to Smokejack. The restaurant itself is housed in a historical looking building on Main Street. The decor was very nice on the inside, as opposed to your typical bbq joint. Vintage-y looking bottles of Boylan's sodas line the wall. I tried one appetizer - the fried pickles. These were served with a hot sauce of some sort. I found the pickles to be soggy and limp. Dissappointing. I'm not a bbq expert, but I do know I like the tangy, vinegary sauces more than sweet ones. There was a variety of styles available. I tried the low country pulled pork shoulder with carolina sauce and it was great. The meat was smokey and tender, and the sauce was served on the side. I tried the mac and cheese and cheese grits for the sides. The mac and cheese wasn't very exciting, but the grits were fabulous. There are daily drink specials available (at the bar only). read more

I've eaten Q from some of the best dives in the country. I'm not much for faux ambiance, which Smokejacks has. But based on some of the reviews here, we decided to try it out... Another place that serves FRESH Bud and chilled just right. I ordered the burnt ends and my date ordered the half rack baby back. When I order burnt ends, I expect a bit of char and bark. Their burned ends reminded me of the McRib sandwich. They had no char, but the bark was nearly uniform in depth, almost like it was measured. They were swimming in sauce, so what flavor they may have had was drowned. The sauce was good; a bit on the sweet side, but with a bite. I do have to say that their barbeque beans were damn fine, especially with the bits of pulled pork mixed in. The corn muffins were done just right also. And the service was above average. My suggestions would be to cut back on the sauce on the burnt ends...and burn the damn things! Give them some crunch! Oh, and rethink the decor.... read more

As soon as you open the door, the wafting BBQ smoke hits you in the face, which lets you know you're in a real BBQ joint. Unlike most joints, though, this one is modern and hip, while maintaining some Southern/Mid-Western roots. ***Get the freakin' fried pickles!!!*** I had the sliced brisket sandwich which was really good, even though I'm not really a big brisket eater. The meat was tender and not dried out, served on huge Texas toast. This was my first visit and I got the Mojo Smoke Combo. I picked the pulled pork, smoked sausage, 3 bones baby back ribs with sides Collard Greens Cole Slaw. The sausage was good, the pulled pork was very good and the ribs with KC sauce were really really good. The sides were very good but the collard greens were outstanding. This was not our first or second time at this joint. My husbands pork shoulder was very dry and my sons BBQ Ribs were not much better. You would think being a BBQ restaurant you would have this perfected by now! My sweet tea was weak. I would have been better off with drinking water. The service was just ok. We kept having to ask for another drink, pepper sauce for the collards which took way to long to bring out to the table. I had the pimento cheese sandwich which was good, but they dropped the top of the sandwich on the floor. I finally received the top of the sandwich after I had finished eating. An 80% off restaurants.com certificate provided the impetus to finally visit Smokejack on a recent Sunday night. The unseasonably cool weather made it a perfect evening to sit out on their patio, which seemed to be a popular choice. All six or so patio tables were filled, while the restaurant interior was spookily empty. To meet the minimum amount to spend to use our coupon, we started with the fried pickles. These were delicious. Served piping hot and with a flavorful spicy dipping sauce, the fried pickles are a must order. And, at only $5, I would get them even without a coupon. Like Stacey G., I was glad to see they offered true pulled -and not chopped- pork. It's getting harder and harder to find at most BBQ places, and their version does not disappoint. It was a little mushy, like it had been sitting "pre-pulled" in a steam tray for too long, but they flavor was still great, and I really enjoyed the mustard based sauce. My sides of mac and cheese and corn pudding were only okay. The mac and cheese was a little bland, but if you're a fan of the blue box variety you'll probably find Smokejack's a-okay. The serving of corn pudding was HUGE, but sadly also lacked flavor, including corn flavor. I suspect this side is made from canned corn. The great standout of the meal was the cornbread muffins, which were brought out oddly half-way through our meal. These little guys looked plain, but wow! Incredibly moist, dense, and filled with whole corn kernels, this cornbread was more like dessert! And speaking of dessert, while we didn't have any room for it, the slice of chocolate pie that came to our neighbors' table was more like a quarter of a pie rather than a slice. Maybe the trick here is to stick to the appetizers and dessert! *Sigh* So much promise, but in the end, the inconsistency only merits an "A-OK." There is much better 'cue (and sides) to be had in the area, but I would be up for giving Smokejack another try. read more

It was definitely everything I expected. I had the chicken and rib plate which was fantastic. The Bbq sauce might be the best I have ever had. My wife had the Cuban sandwich which was also great. No complaints here. This is definitely a 5 star bbq joint. read more
