National chain restaurants pretty much dominate Taunton's roster of places to grab a bite. That said, Smokey Bones offers a welcome change from the usual TGIFs or Ruby Tuesdays, etc. of the area. Whilst I realize many foodies look down on the chains, they exist to serve a purpose (decent food at a decent price) and Smokeys fills this role wonderfully. The bf and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal here last night. The St. Louis ribs were average as far as the meat itself goes but the brown sugar rub was delicious. The pulled pork was excellent and the quality of that meat showed...no 'bad' parts like gristly pieces or chunks of fat thrown in. The baked beans were sweet and flavourful. They have a basket of 4 different BBQ sauces on the table and of course I tried all of them. The Carolina mustard based one (yellow cap) was great on the pulled pork. The sweet one (green cap) and the vinegar based (blue cap) were both perfect on the fries. The Chipotle (red cap) was not my favourite even though I generally like spicy things...it just didn't quite taste right. The portions here are huge...$13.99 for the 1/3 rack and pulled pork combo including baked beans and fries and garlic toast? WHAT?!? I could almost feel my pants button popping by the time my dinner was over. They also have individual speakers on the table so you can turn the volume up (or off) for whatever one of the numbered TVs along the bar catches your eye. This seems to be a typical "guy's guy" type of joint with sports on TV and pool tables in the dining area, so that crowd would probably give it 5 stars; However, even this East meets West gay couple with urbane tastes felt comfortable here and enjoyed a decent meal for a great price. read more

A friend and I ate at the bar. I ordered the Smokey wings. They were very salty but otherwise tasted good and were cooked well. I mentioned this to the bartender as did the lady seated next to me. We both got burgers--$1 extra for fries or any regular side--we joked that certain friends of ours would wine about that! We couldn't even get through half of our burgers, let alone the sides! Ok, so I've had a bone to pick with Smokey Bones for the past couple of years since they removed my MOST FAVORITE SALAD from the menu. It was what I ordered and raved about all the time, a BBQ chicken ranch salad unlike any other. I still check the menu each time I go in hopes that it's back. Ok, that off my chest. I like Smokey Bones, the drinks are fun, delish, and their selection has expanded. The mac & cheese dishes are yummy. I also think the wings and 4 various bbq/hot sauces at the table are good for mix and match to your liking. DO NOT go here if you are looking for authentic Texas smokehouse style BBQ. With my Texas blood and Southern heritage, I should have known good Texas BBQ would be a long shot in this area, but I had to give it a shot. That said, the food isn't bad, it just isn't right. I ordered beef brisket and smoked sausage. The brisket was sliced paper thin and already covered in sauce. It wasn't bad, but when you put 4 different BBQ sauce bottles on the table, you would think you would have the option. Also, the thin slices and sauce make me wonder if they're trying to cover something up. Dry, tough, or poorly smoked? The sausage I got was all wrong. They used Italian sausage instead of a more traditional kielbasa. The service was good and the prices were decent, so it wasn't a total bust. I've heard that this place is known for their ribs, so maybe next time I'll stick to that. read more

We had dinner here last night on our way to New Bedford. It was your pretty average chain restaurant experience. The place looks good, and they have some nice pool tables that were not being used when we were there. The service we had was good, he checked on us when we needed it and our food came out hot. For a BBQ place, i found the selection to be a bit less than I was hoping for. We split the pretzel app, which was pretty good. But they were a lil overdone (good otherwise). We then split a full order of the dry-rub ribs (which is how I like mine, not all slopped in sauce). The rub was good and the ribs were decently cooked (I thought they were a bit overdone). The fries were overcooked and dry. The coleslaw was your average slaw. The mustard bbq was my favorite. If you are looking for a different chain to hit, this is a decent bet. But still left me looking for a really good BBQ joint in New England. read more

My husband & I were craving BBQ so we decided to stop here on our way home from Boston. We were not disappointed! I started off with a cup of the Brunswick stew; I've never had it before so I have nothing to compare it to, but it was delicious! Pulled pork, chicken, sweet corn, tomatoes, all in a sweet/savory broth. For dinner I had the baby back ribs (with brown sugar rub) and smoked chicken wing combo. The ribs were tender, juicy...fall off the bone yummy. And the wings....OMG! They were the best wings I've had in a while. Crispy, juicy, spicy, messy! My hubby had a triple combo of pulled pork, smoked wings, and spicy sausage. He loved the wings...LOVED the spicy sausage...and liked the pulled pork. He said it was good, but he remembers it being better. The sides were good...mashed potatoes with the skins on; cole slaw with a tangy dressing; but skip the roasted corn (it tasted like burnt popcorn...yuk). We treated ourselves to dessert...the little shot glass type ones. They were yummy but a little ordinary. Our server Kyle couldn't have been more pleasant...he checked back often to see how we liked our food, filled waters glasses without being asked, was very knowledgeable about the menu, and changed the channel on the TV so my husband could watch his baseball team (and I thought it was very sweet that he "checked" with me first!) It's actually kinda sad that after this place was actually doing pretty well, they went back downhill, and by downhill, I mean off a cliff. Some of the people here are great, too. I've given up after so many times going here just to get overcooked ribs, dried out brisket, or a tough pile of pulled pork. The manager, Barbra is great when it comes to customer service, but sadly can't get the kitchen staff to do a consistently decent job. Sorry, but I don't go to restaurants for a handout. Atmosphere here is pretty good. I like the seating setups. and the trivia machine is nice to have while you wait for a very long time for food to come. First time here we waited 50 minutes. people behind us were waiting 30 min for the check. not sure why they didnt get up to see what was going on with that. we had to leave due to a movie starting had tickets to. they gave us the food to go without charging. nice gesture on their part. but wow such a long wait. 2nd time there were not that many people there and still took over 30 min for 2 small sandwiches and fries. crazy it takes so long. decent place if you dont mind waiting. but i would avoid this place on any weekend night... read more

The food isn't bad. You just have to make sure it's cooked to your liking. The bathrooms are disgusting and everything in the restaurant is sticky. The menus were covered in who knows what. The bar at multiple spots was sticky. The floors were sticky. I don't think we walked through glue coming in. For a late lunch 2-2:30 service was slow. There might have been 10 people at the bar and yet there was still about a 10 minute period before we were even asked what we wanted for drinks. I'm sure everyone's individual experiences are different but think I'll skip my next trip here. read more

This was my first visit to this establishment and my experience was quite odd. Beware: there are issues that we will be reporting to the Board of Health, that may be gross for some to read. The one star is for decent food, great beer/ liquor selection, and one competent waitress. Beyond that Smokey Bones left much to be desired. I had the pleasure of being in the company of a man who is a restaurateur and is very knowledgeable about the business. He always points out logistical and operational restaurant concepts to me, and it's a learning experience. This is a man who started a small cafe twenty years ago, and today owns a small chain of eateries that have solid five star reviews. We had a reservation and were greeted nicely and seated right away. Business was steady but not crowded or loud on a Tuesday night. Atmosphere was good and not too loud or bright. The decor seemed like the designer had either never seen a real southern BBQ joint, or went for the Adirondack log cabin theme but confused it with some kind of Alaskan hunting lodge. Decent dining room, but weird, at least for those of us who have lived in Texas and traveled to many of the eateries that Smokey Bones seems to attempt to emulate. The meal itself was fairly uneventful and the food a bit better than expected. I had the Morning Glory burger, featuring a fried egg, bacon, and half pound beef burger. It was done just perfectly but both beef and bacon lacked the charbroiled flavor that I expected at a BBQ place. Among my table, we had the ribs, both baby back and St. Louis style (both awesome and falling off the bones), the beef brisket (tasty but tough and a bit dry), and pulled pork (ditto my comments for the brisket). We took turns in the restrooms to wash our hands and freshen up before coffee and dessert. Someone had a toddler to change and was shocked to find that the women's room had no baby changing table. Nor did the men's room. The women in our party also reported a toilet running nonstop and on the brink of overflowing, a faucet that didn't work, and the other faucet which barely dripped out water. They pointed these concerns out to an employee who just said "thanks" and walked away. None of the employees went to the restrooms to check on the conditions during the rest of our stay, so the toilet water very well may have finally made its escape. In the men's room, the toilet stalls had their original locking hardware apparently damaged and removed. It was replaced by dollar-store-quality hardware that was undersized and broken from trying to hold the weight of the doors. Needless to say it was also misaligned to the point of being useless in securing a door. Again something was said to an employee, who said "ok" and walked away with a bit of a shrug of her shoulders. We ordered coffees and one person wanted cream. The cream hit the coffee and immediately curdled, which is a sign of bad milk. We then looked at the package of the creamer and it had expired a month ago. All of the creamers had the same lot number stamped on them and all were warm. The waitress said that they didn't have any other cream, which made us wonder what other patrons were being served. We were given another mug of coffee to replace the one with the spoiled cream in it, and the waitress clearly said that we would be "comped" for the coffees. Time for dessert! The fried Oreo was sold out, leaving chocolate cake a la mode as the sole option. I wasn't in the mood for cake but ice cream sounded good. The waitress came back and said that they could only serve ice cream with cake. We all sort of chuckled at the absurdity of it and asked her to repeat that. Once again she said that cake and ice cream cannot be ordered separately. So cake and ice cream would be the dessert. When the waitress walked away, the gentleman who is a restaurateur said that the cake and ice cream thing was unbelievable and he was ready to leave. The cake and ice cream came, it was good but nothing special. The waitress remained pleasant the whole time, even as members of my party were still making comments to each other about the craziness of the dessert policy. Could things get any better for Smokey Bones? We hadn't left yet, so there was still a chance for them to win us over. Instead, what happened had us once more staring in bewilderment. They had the nerve to charge us not only for the "comped" coffee, but also the one with the spoiled cream in it!! With that little detail on our bill, any chance of any of us returning to the place disappeared. We were shocked and couldn't believe what we saw. Enough was enough and my relative who is in the restaurant business pointed out the discrepancy to the waitress and stated that he wanted to speak to a manager if the charge wasn't removed. The waitress came back with a revised receipt and we paid and left. Your experience may vary, but I would not recommend you visit Smokey Bones for any reason. read more

I am giving 5 stars solely off of my experience with my waitress. KiKi was Amazing; it's been a while since I dined at this Location for good reasons. KiKi was not the first employee to walk past my family and I but she acknowledged us with a HANDFUL of dishes plus trying to answer the phone. At first I was only going to do a To Go order but her bright positive attitude convinced me to stay although I was ready to go. She made a simple (yet disappointing) experience a profound one she made great suggestions from drinks and appetizers to dinner and desserts, even her sauce suggestions were on point. Last time I went her will be the last time ever. The worst presentation I have seen, outside of a prison. The driest, toughest over sauced ribs I have ever had the displeasure of fighting with. The "smoked" wings were smoked when? and the grilled to "warm up" how many times? could not have been more dry, seriously dry. The sodium level of these items, slopped with sweet bbq sauce was mouth puckering at best. Soooo salty. So the winning combination of Ugly, dry, salty as hell food was too much for my family to bare - despite the awesome waitress who kicked ass. This was our first visit to Smokey Bones in quite a while but it still looks the same. Hostess sat us right away and recommended some off the specials. Place seemed to be clean and organized though previous reviews say otherwise. Must say though that their tv's were EXTREMELY outdated. This is 2014, the tube tv's gotta go and HD is a must !! The waitress was great and food was very good. We ordered the smoked wings and fried pickles for apps (both were great). I ordered the pulled chicken salad and my bf had ribs. Our only complaint was that the broccoli came out pretty cold. A manager came by a visited the table to see how everything was ( very handsome and well dressed ). He apologized for the broccoli and brought us a new side. We asked him about the tv's and he just laughed saying they hope to have something updated soon before football. I recently moved to the area and went there with a friend... As we wanted to seat at Bar we had no problem of finding place... The girl at the bar promptly took our order.. I ordered J&B Scotch with a splash of water.. This is very easy to understand for anyone who is a bartender.. Still she gave me a 30 mL drink which was topped with water. It didn't taste like scotch anymore.. When I asked her about it she arrogantly told me that this is how they serve it.. For second round I ordered J&B Straight up.. My friend ordered Beer and I felt like ordering same next time.. Will be vising again coz its close by.. Portion of drink anywhere standard is 45 mL.. they serve 30 mL which is not proper for price they charge.. Didn't try any food there but the food being served looked appetizing.. Went to this Smokey Bones not too long ago about an hour ago and instantly regretted it. I ordered the barbecue crowd-pleaser everything went fine till my food came out. I had one drink and a bubble Aid my food came out and after eating a chicken wing and maybe 3 fried pickles I noticed a huge piece of hair. I wasn't able to find my waitress so called over a different waitress to have a look. My plate was taken away without a word, I waited for a while while my waitress just walked around cleaning tables seem like just trying to avoid us. while waiting I wanted to have another drink so I finally called over our waitress and asked if I could have another drink and asked what was going on with my food, I was told that they were remaking it and it should be done soon. right after she had said that about three minutes later my food arrived by this time my family was done eating so I figured I would have my second drink and take a few bites of food and bring the rest home. The drink never arrived, sat there for a few minutes waiting and waiting as our waitress continue to cleaning tables and take another tables order. At this point I got frustrated and decided it was time to go. soon as I was ready to leave and grab the check my drink came. At this point I figured I'll just drink the drink and go. Went over my bill I paid for two alcoholic beverages and two bubble aids the barbecue crowd-pleaser was comped, I was charged $24 and change. I finished my drink took care of the check and we headed out. soon as I got up from my table I started to feel very sick I made my way to the bathroom and vomited before even leaving the restaurant. On the car ride home I fell asleep as soon as I got to my house I ran to the bathroom sick to my stomach. after being in the bathroom for a good 10 to 15 minutes I am now laying in bed feeling very sick, having no doubts that I will be in the bathroom again soon. this is probably the worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant. read more

Bad service really irritates me. If you are a bartender do not have you friends come to the bar to "hang out" if they are going to distract you from the real customers. I went for dinner last night with my girlfriend and this will be the last time. I didn't really want to go here but since its close to her house it was just convenient. The food was fine I got the West Coast Club and she got a 1/2 rack of baby back ribs. The ribs were definitely not fall off the bone more like bone in bubble gum. The food is what it is you don't go to a Smokey Bones looking for fine dining or even high quality. When we walked in the smell was amazing, I was so excited lol. We ordered cheese fries, they had a tangy taste to them but they were still pretty good. After the waitress dropped off the appetizer we didnt see her for a good 30 or more minutes. She then dropped off our food and my fiance' wanted a water and it took her another 20 mins to bring him the water. I ordered the Bones Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, I thought it was supposed to come with bleu cheese on it but it didnt. It was way too hot. I couldnt even finish it.
