My brother is 'unique', and sometimes hard to deal with. Last year when I visited him, we went to Smokey Bones, and had an excellent dinner. This year, we returned. He's another year older, hard of hearing, and kind of picky, so when he complained about his steak, I thought nothing of it. HOWEVER, the restaurant staff did. They cooked him another, and allowed him to take it home, along with the BOGO half of my wings. They didn't have to, but they treated him really well. I appreciate the staff (shoutout to Lily and the manager (?)). I think most people try to ignore him, but not at Smoky Bones. From what I see, they treat everyone like a prized customer. Just ordered Smokey Bones for the first time after getting a gift card on Christmas. Yes the prices are high! Especially for the portion size. But like I said we had a gift card. Went in to pick up for Togo. All staff seemed nice. Order: BBQ chicken was delicious! Wings (mild) were good. The pulled chicken HOWEVER was so damn SALTY I couldn't even finish it. So I wouldn't recommend the pulled chicken. If I get a gift card I'll be back. Otherwise I'll get by BBQ from a cheaper and just as delicious spot. read more

Smokey Bones would have a higher rating but I feel the cost is too high compared to other barbecue places, local or chain. Don't get me wrong, the food is excellent and the service is top notch, but 2 entrees, 2 appetizers, a soft drink, and a cup of soup cost 100$ with tip. I was a little shocked and since I was paying for me and my coworker, I was wondering how I'd pull off a 100$ lunch expense. Cost aside, the food is really good. I just wonder how much the price deters potential customers. The loaded fries were excellent. Some of the best I've ever had anywhere. Crispy-shelled, pillowy-soft fries blanketed with BBQ seasoning, cheddar jack cheese, bacon, chipotle mayo, BBQ glaze, diced green onions, tomatoes, and buttermilk ranch. I honestly don't think you can get any better than this. I'm sure the loaded nachos are similar but fries are better than tortilla chips. The Brunswick stew was delicious, hearty, meaty. Lightly smokey from the pulled pork, it was a bit sweet though, as if they tossed in some barbecue sauce as seasoning. My entree was a 1/3rd rack of ribs, brisket, fire roasted corn, and broccoli. The cost was already $24.99 but the addition of brisket ADDED $9.50. I only got 3 slices of brisket. This is WAY overpriced. You can get a full slab of ribs in Nashville from an award winning restaurant for $24.99 flat with sides. For comparison, a full slab of ribs is $32.99 here. I wish this weren't the case because the food really is good. The ribs were sticky-sweet, tender with a nice balance of fat and meat. The brisket was smokey, seasoned well, and not at all dry. The fire roasted corn didn't taste fire roasted at all. The broccoli was better than I expected, only because they put a heavy amount of seasoning. Overall I liked Smokey Bones but I can't recommend it because of the price. read more

The service and food are exceptional. However, the interior is now hideously ugly and snobbishly sterile. Feels like I walked into some angry mechanic's snooty little Jeep garage, and that mechanic doesn't want you eating in there. I miss the 2000s cabin atmosphere that it used to have. The former Y2K cabin feel definitely put me in the mood to enjoy some classic American barbecue. Personally, I now recommend ordering their takeout. read more

Typical for a sports bar atmosphere not suited well for older folks . The pool tables elicit a loud and obnoxious clientele. so be aware of this. This used to be my favorite restaurant in Johnson City. It's been a while since I'd eaten there. However, my recent visit may be my last. One would think that being in the food "service" industry, those individuals would concentrate on that aspect of the business with the large amount of competition in the area for your hard earned dollars in this economy. In short, the Hostess should be a little more courteous rather than giving the "could care a less" attitude when there are people waiting for service, watching open tables sit vacant. Once seated (after a long wait) the server was nice, pleasant and attentive. She did her job well. Regrettably, people go to restaurants to eat food not interact with their servers. The cheese curds and pretzel sticks were delicious. but the time between appetizers and main course could have been a lot less. When the main courses did arrive, the Salmon AND baby back ribs were dried out like they had been sitting under a warming lamp far too long. At those prices, you expect perfection. Unless I read improved reviews of this establishment in the future, I'll be dining on Bar-B-Q in other places in the area. read more

First time at the Johnson City TN location, but while living in FL I ate at the Clearwater location several times a year. There were two of us and we arrived around 11:15 on Wednesday, March 12. There were 2 other couples already seated. We were seated quickly and our beverage order taken. It appeared that Tuesday night was super busy, as our table wasn't clean, the beverage and food menus were sticky with ketchup or BBQ sauce residue. The ketchup bottle was empty, and the nice selection of BBQ sauces on the table was nasty - dried, caked on sauce all around the top and bottom of the lid; sauce dripping all over the sides of the bottles, etc. The interior was a bit "worn out", and the tables could use a good refinishing. After about 30 minutes, our burger and baked potato arrived. They were both delicious, hot, and well prepared. Prices were reasonable. We will be back again unless, as we just saw on the news, this location is converted into a "Twin Peaks" or closed altogether. It's not worth the 1 hr. and 45 minute drive just to eat there, but when we're in Johnson City, it's something we'd consider again. The military discount was appreciated. read more

We definitely wanted to try some BBQ while in Tennessee so we got their special called bonefire which has a little of everything. Sauces can be on the sweet side, we found a lot of things on the sweeter side in the south, so we just asked for them on the side. And the wings that everyone raves about is just as good as they everyone says.
