Call ahead to make sure they have ribs , we stopped in for a Sunday dinner & was told after we ordered our food. How does this happen & why isn't there a better system in place for back ups?? I ordered online on 11 aug. Got the double trouble ribs with two sides. thw sides, backed beanes and cole slaw were ok nothing special. Baby backed ribs were ok nothing special. Smokey Bones is just not what it once was. To be honest, I never was a raving fan of their BBQ, but it was okay. I prefer Sonny's, or for even better takeout-only (due to the smoke), Alex's or Jazzy's. But some guys at work like Smokey Bones well enough that I go there occasionally. Now I mostly get a burger, which is decent, but I prefer Green Iguana's. It's quite expensive. Burger, fries and a coke hits $14 with tip. I've noticed that the fries taste funky, like doughnuts, which I assume they still sell as a dessert. The service is decent. It's pretty slow at lunch time and there's free Wifi, so it could be a place to get some business done. It still looks like a good place for sports, with all the televisions and individual speaker boxes at each table. I've heard the bar is still a good place to spend a Sunday afternoon during football season, but I haven't been there for a game in a couple years. read more

All over their website and online it says "buy 8 wings you get 8 wings free" or "buy 16 wings you get 16 free" it's not like it's an expired old deal, it's showing as today's date for the deal specifically. Considering that most people can't eat at the city's best restaurants every night, Smokey Bones is good for what it is -- a themed chain restaurant with food, service and an atmosphere that are good enough when you just need a bite to eat someplace convenient. No, it's not the best BBQ I've ever had in my life, but I wouldn't expect the servers at Carrabba's to speak Italian either. The food at Smokey Bones is pretty good, though the portions have gotten smaller so the meals can be a little pricey for what you get now. The pulled pork and beef brisket are good, and the sauces are definitely worthwhile. We'll probably go back the next time we're at the mall and cooking just ain't in the cards. read more

I was pretty disappointed by my latest visit to Smokey Bones. It had been 4-5 years since my last visit and I was really looking forward to it. I had heard of changes made due to new ownership several years ago but I am not sure things changed for the better. I will start with prices. They are high, too high for barbecue. We came on a Sunday afternoon and after we received the menus, I asked if they had a lunch menu. Apparently, you can only order lunch specials during the week. A little disappointing since I would really only be visiting on the weekend anyway as I am sure most people would. So you effectively need to order from the (more expensive) dinner menu. So what does this mean? Pulled pork barbecue plate and two sides - 13.99, cheapest thing on the menu - small pulled pork sandwich with a small side - 9.99. So moving past prices, when the pulled pork sandwich arrived, I found it incredibly bland even a little soggy. The fries were okay but it is hard to screw that up. Service was okay but not super friendly. My questions about the lunch menu took a lot of probing to find out why there was no lunch menu and maybe the realization that we were only ordering two pulled pork sandwiches and thus no larger order (tip) was disappointing to her. I won't be back. There is so much better quality barbecue in Tampa for better prices. I highly recommend Holy Hog or Leeroy Selmons instead. read more

Went back to Smoky Bones on saturday evening and had terrible service. First I asked for the wine list. The server could not find one and asked if we wanted white or red. He then rattled off the wines in red and white that we might have been interested in. We then each ordered a combo platter. My wife ordered one with pulled pork and barbequed chicken. After about twenty minutes the server came out and said that they were out of the chicken that she had ordered. She changed her selection for the second item in the combo. When the food was served only one item was on her plate. The server said that the second item would be right out. It did come out as we finished our meals (about twenty minutes after we started eatinc). We sent it back and I refused to pay for it. They are slipping terribly and need to get their act together. read more

If your looking for real smoked wings and amazing pulled chicken DONT come here! I ordered smoked wings and they looked fried; I asked the server of these are "smoked" and she said yes and walked away. I tried one and was certain it was fried, I asked the server if they were fried she said "we smoke the wings, let them sit to room temperature and when they're ordered we flash fry them for a min" that's pathetic to say the least! I also ordered a pulled chicken salad, it took more than 30 min to come out, the wait wasn't the bad part, the fact that the chicken was ice cold was the part that pissed me off. I asked our charming server, why is the chicken cold? She said, it because "we grill it, then pull it, then chill it in the fridge". Bottom line is the name is quite misleading, chicken tastes left over and they just best it up for you. They have ribs, burgers, steaks and pasta here too: you can try it, I'm gonna pass. For BBQ in this area I recommend Jazzy's and Alex's BBQ. read more

Two stars is generous. The place was all but empty at 5:30 yet it took nearly 15 minutes to get two drafts. The server could not have moved more slowly. I was ready to walk out but my partner did not want to cause a "scene." Although there were only two tables occupied when we entered, two other large parties were seated at the adjacent booth and the booth across the aisle from us. Unfortunately Smokey Bones knows how to run me off. I used to love to go there for their buffalo meat; both steaks and burgers. Then they quit serving buffalo. I finally went back after a few years and they had a really good 8 or 10 oz prime rib that was under $20. I got that and it was delicious. Went back several weeks later to get it and they discontinued that also! You could only get a 16 oz prime rib at $30. Who in the heck can eat that much? And way too expensive! I love this place! My coworkers have been coming to this place for quite a while and I decided to tag along and try it out and I am so glad I did. The atmosphere is awesome and you can tell the staff really cares about their guests and each other. We sat at the bar (there were quite a few of us) because my coworkers said Nicole is so sweet, goofy and personable and really goes extra mile and they were spot on. She is a sweetheart. The food was delicious and their kitchen is open late so that is a huge plus. If you stop in try the smoked wings and loaded cheese fries! For family night, my family came here... from the beginning, service was terrible! We waited awhile to be seated and the place was pretty much completely empty. Our waitress was not one of the best ones we could have had. She wasn't friendly, wasn't very helpful with the menu, and she rarely came by our table to check on us. She kept disappearing. Even the food was disappointing! My mashed potatoes were dry as a desert and so was my meat. Overall, this experience was not pleasant besides the conversation at the table.
