If you have high maintenance taste buds for BBQs, I would recommend to try this place only if you are really desperate for a BBQ fixin'. The service was your normal practice, but the food? Let's just say if I was the grill-master for this place, I would get kicked by a boot with a spur in the front. The St Louis styled ribs I ordered along with the beef brisket was completely dry as if they were cooked like a day ago. The brisket was as tough as half dried jerky, and can someone tell me why it was sliced like a piece of pastrami?? The only saving grace for this place was the manager. She is super kind and did her job well. I hated having to ask for her with a severely negative experience, but sometimes life happens. We went in and signed up for our 25 minute wait. I marveled while at the bar how we were waiting for a table when I counted 3 open four tops. They were cleaned, just sitting there. We all had good drinks from the bar and they were priced as expected. Less than our 25 minutes later we were sat. We received a hurried greating from our server. She is nice, but I wonder how often she really checked on our food. Forty minutes after placing our order with her and approximately 30 seconds after speaking with the manager we had our food. The food was luke warm which lets me know it was sitting under the warmer awhile. The steaks were medium well when we asked for medium. The portion sizes were tiny and the prices were huge. There was a line out the door, but at one point I counted 10 open tables. Thankfully the manager took 50% off our bill. She also offered to send me home with a dessert to entice me to return. I have special dietary needs so it wasn't likely I'd return anyway, but after such a rough night I definitely won't return. read more

I read Yelp reviews before going to this Smokey Bones location, so I expected the worst. Service was surprisingly good though. The server was polite, quick, efficient, and anticipated a few things that I was going to ask for. The food, on the other hand, was of mixed quality. I heartily that this is the place to go for some good food! It also has great atmosphere and excellent service to offer. Not only did we have a fantastic waitress, but the manager even came around while we were there to check on us and other customers. Price are reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. If you have never been, I strongly recommend you go! And if you have been there, GO AGAIN! The cinnamon apples are to die for!! EDIT 1/20/08 - I have to clarify that it is much better to go during their slow time. The service and food is way better then. I was there last night and to me the server was too pushy, especially when it came to us ordering an appetizer. And then said appetizer, the cornbread, was way over cooked. Another update - I hate to leave a negative feedback stand once we have seen improvement. We have been back to the Smokey Bones in York since my previous two reviews. They have greatly improved their service. I would recommend you give them a try. We also have changed our opinion of the Wilkes Barre location - and now will never return there. We took my senior parents there months ago - and must have sat for at least 30 minutes before we could someone to actually stop at our table to wait on us. We kept trying to get staff attention - even asked the hostess to send our waiter/waitress over. We stayed because we had several diabetics and all the restaurants in the area were crowded. A group of us (12+) went here for dinner after the York Musclecar Reunion. The food was excellent. The waitress was a little slow in that she waited until she had taken orders from 3 separate tables before putting in any orders. It would've been better if they had someone take each table's orders to the kitchen. After reading reviews I would consider my visit better than most as our service was good. We had never dined here before and were just looking to kill an hour or so during the rain while heading out to a festival. Inside we were prompted seated. I liked that the tables had ample room all the way around them and not crammed. The handicap ramp however leading up to the dining area was too narrow and I found myself squeezing beside someone else every time I passed thru. The menu had a nice assortment of BBQ , southern type foods. I had difficulty choosing between the pulled pork meal and the chicken dish loaded with onion, bacon, and cheese. Ultimately the chicken dish was my selection. My husband ordered a hamburger with an egg on top, additionally we had a kid's meal in our party. Service was prompt and our dishes arrived in good timing. My chicken portion was huge! That was in addition to two sides - broccoli and baked beans. I struggled just eating half my meal. I loved the steamed broccoli with just a touch of seasoning. The baked beans were a tad too sweet and seemed like they came from a can. While my meal was supposed to be topped with bbq sauce I am so glad I ordered it w/out it. There were several bbq sauces on the table and none that I liked. I was surprised that given this a bbq joint they didn't serve better sauces than I could get at the grocery store. The kids meal - crusty chicken strips with a dipping sauce and a side a broccoli was delicious and a good portion size. I should have ordered one for myself. My only issue was that while my broccoli was steamed the children's meal was raw and difficult for my toddler granddaughter to eat. Fortunately after mentioning this to the waiter he swapped it out and she was happy once again. During our meal someone who I assumed to be the manager came and inquired about everything. I was surprised by her extremely casual attire and felt the waiter/waitresses were dressed more professionally than she was. I also thought some of the signage - meant to be funny - was stupid and unnecessary. Things like "courtesy flush required", and overall just dumb bathroom humor. Could have done without it. The bathroom was also dirtier than I expected considering everything in the dining area was clean and well maintained. Diners around us all had coupons, not sure where or how they got them - but that would have been nice to have. Our meal for 2 adults, 1 child with water was in the $40 range. I'm ready to commit: this is the best pulled pork barbeque around. Just ordered it for the third time since I first discovered it a couple of months ago. Consistently tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. My buddy and I are all about smoked meats, barbeques, and sausages, and have recently travelled all around Baltimore County and South Central PA on food tours. And the winner of the pulled pork category is right in my own back yard. Restaurant is always clean... rustic lodge architecture with whimsy in the decor. Other food items have been quite good (fire roasted corn!) and prompt, even when the place is packed full as it often is. Full menu till 2 AM for the night owls. Servers are sincere and knowledgeable (here's your shout out, Nekisha). Pretty darn good BBQ, service and atmosphere. I figured variety was the way to go for a first visit, so I ordered the build-your-own combo - 1/3 rack of St. Louis style ribs, brisket, baked beans and natural cut fries. The ribs had a fairly sweet dry rub. Very nice - but not the best I've had - could stand to be a bit meatier. The brisket however, at the risk of hyperbole - probably *was* the best I've ever had. It's cliche to say "melts in the mouth" but there's no other way to put it. I'd love to know how they pulled it off. read more

PLEASE!! Heed the reviews! This place SUCKS! Despite all the bad reviews, my girlfriend insisted on coming to this place because she saw the avocado turkey burger on the menu and really wanted to try it. Here's what I thought of my meal. The brisket... WORST I've EVER had! Garlic bread... Burnt beyond a crisp! (seriously I couldn't even bite through it). Mashed potatoes... Thank god for the gravy because they were so dry and bland. Baked beans... Actually pretty tasty. Smoked Wings... DAMN GOOD! The ONLY thing I would trust ordering again if I were ever to return. He's what she thought of her meal. Turkey Burger... Worst she's ever had! She complained it was very bland and dry. The avocado was mushy and she's pretty sure they forgot the cheese. French Fries... Good. Nicely seasoned and overall yummy. So there you have it! Like everyone else has said, the food sucks and steer clear. We stopped in at 9:20 at night and noticed that we were the only people not sitting at the bar. Apparently the bar is what is keeping this place afloat. And yeah...the service really does suck too! It took 10 ten minutes to bring out a piece of chocolate cake for dessert! (which I have to admit was pretty darn yummy also!) I will say this... A pitcher of beer for $6 and a plate of smoked wings while sitting at the bar (better service) would probably make for a decent experience. I truly do not understand how this place survives. I was in The York area on business and had been to Smokey Bones before. While I wouldn't have given it rave reviews I assumed it was a known quantity, better than someplace I'd never been. Big mistake! When I arrived I told the host I was picking up an order, he went to check on it, came back, looked at me and walked away without order or explanation. When I finally got my order 10 minutes later the fried pickles were room temperature, clearly not fresh out of the fryer. When I got to my hotel room (across the street) and tried my ribs they were cold enough that the fat in the meat was thick and greasy. Thank goodness my room had a microwave. The only positive was the flavor on all was reasonably good and had the food actually been warm it likely would have been worth the wait. My sister and I went in for dinner tonight. We both were served raw turkey avocado burgers. My garlic mayo looked different so I thought maybe they were doing the burgers different too. As I took a bite, I immediately knew it was raw. My sister noticed right away and was lucky that she hadn't taken a bite. I'm over fifty and have never been served raw turkey in a restaurant. I'm a longtime bones card holder, who's had some minor issues over the years, but this sent me over the edge. Sadly, I will never be going back. read more

We visited smoky bones on Wednesday the night before Thanksgiving and the restaurant was not busy. The New menus were very appealing. The specialty drinks were excellent. We found ourselves waiting to be waited on and continued to wait for service the entire evening. We had to ask for ketchup, silverware straws for our drinks and refills. The bartender was scarce to say the least and it took us 20 minutes to pay for our meal and leave. We saw the manager more than we did our bartender. As for the food, my Cuban sandwich was served cold and the manager apologized and removed it from our check. I had buffa-Q chicken wings and they were excellent! All an all the service and food was not as good as it was a year ago. Hopefully this was just an off night and we will return. read more

They serve great Brisket after 4pm but it would appear they never make enough to last over 1 hour. I also had the waffle brunch burger and I'm not going to lie it was intimidating. But I powered through it and was delicious. I would give this place a better review if they deserved it. I will never go back again! My fiancé makes a joke about coming here every time we go out because he knows how furious I get! Just let me explain this through my experience... 1st time going; the service was phenomenal! The young lady answered all of my questions. Even explained the syrup content in their teas (thank you for that!). Even though she gave us perfect service the food just couldn't keep up. I ordered the st. Louis ribs. So dry! I felt like I was chewing on a leather belt! The main course overall was disappointing. Especially for the price I paid. However I would go just to buy their cornbread. It's absolutely delicious! After having a semi-bad experience I decided to go again giving them another chance... I made a mistake! 2nd time going; we decided to try the build your own burger... I mean come on? Who wouldn't want to create the best burger from the ground up? Even though the toppings were overly priced (in my opinion), I thought it would be totally worth it! WRONG!!!! The burger was way too dry I only ate less than a quarter worth! I didn't even want to bring it home! And if anyone knows me I love left overs from restaurants. My burger was about 17 dollars and some change. Now my fiancés burger was over 20 dollars! He didn't even finish his due to how dry the angus beef patty was. He swears it had to be frozen. I had one of the worst meals I have ever had in my life at Smokey Bones. If I could give Smokey Bones in York ,PA no stars I would, but you have to give one star to leave a review. The food is terrible. The chicken tasted old. The sauces were terrible. When I called to complain the customer service was a joke. They said they would respond within 72 business hours, it has been 15 days and no response. What is the point of having customers service if they never respond. Summary: Bad food, nonexistent customer service and also a waste of money. Do yourself a favor and eat elsewhere. read more

We were in York the other day and decided to try Smokey Bones...I think one star says it all as to the overall experience. The restaurant itself is nice, clean, and the wait staff polite. That given, SLOW BONES would be a better name; service was exceptionally slow...taking about 10 min from drink order to the drinks arriving, 15 min for a beer, etc. The food...probably 2 star quality, with lots of missteps. We got the "Ultimate Appetizer". Onion rings good (though held in place by some over fried giant potato wedge...never put something on the plat that is not edible), fries with bacon and tomato average, chicken tenders average, and nachos....ACK! The nachos were horrible...all chip, virtually no topping of any kind; just chips that had been placed under a broiler. The main courses, I got the pulled pork and have to say I thought it was fine (3 stars); the pork moist, good flavor, good amount. Sadly, others were far less pleased with their dinner. The brisket, dry and a exceptionally small portion; ribs a tad overdone and the sauce had a off flavor; burger "just not very good". In the end, while not the worst meal ever...not a place I'd be willing to give a second try to given the missteps. read more
