It had been a long time since I have been able to stop by Smokey Js. They still make a fantastic square meal on a round bun. (their menu item for a chopped beef sandwich.). Brisket, moist and flavorful... The pickles and onions just add to the deliciousness. Friendly service...and fast too. This place has the flavor and freshness that I'm looking for. The stuffed spud was fantastic! Also, I'm a fan of beef jerky. This jerky is tender and flavorful! Try em both. It's been there for years, with a old school photo on the wall to prove it. Not sure what year, but way back when Lake Travis was full all the time. Some of you may know what I'm talking about. Smokey J's had been open for 39 years (c 1981) so they must be doing something right! I've been a loooong time patron and have yet to be disappointed. Where else can you get a delicious, generous 1/4lb+ chopped beef sandie for just over 5 bucks ($5.75 to be exact)? And, I am PICKY when it comes to Q and particularly chopped brisket...no fatty bits or sinew to be found. As the profoundly wise Mr. Bing would say, "It's a freakin' steal!" Add a side if a side of tasty beans for $1 and a canned sodie pop fop 75 cents and you've got quite the meal. Every bit worth the splurge! The breakfast tacos are some of the best around and their scratch smoked beef jerky is phenom - if they're not sold out. Hey, haters gonna hate. Meh. This use to be a go to spot every time I was in the area because I like tacos. Sometimes to go and sometimes to eat there. The tables have continued to get worse and worse over the years with bird poop. The birds have been interfering with eating and harassing as they want a bite. They squawk and jump around which isn't the best atmosphere. Not sure it was healthy to eat at those tables so I was considering to not return over a few visits but I did. The last visit, the gas station was rolling and had vehicles and boat trailers everywhere. No where to park. I sat off to the side for a spot to open. One did. I pulled in. Put my order in for a couple of tacos and paid. The owner or manager with long hair came back and raised hell to all the customers as to who had parked in his spot which was not marked. He was over the top rude. That was my last visit and never to return again mainly because of the health risk of dirty tables. read more

WHOA! This is close to where I work, and my word, I'm so excited to have tried this place for the first time. Today's special was a baked stuffed potato or a pulled pork sandwich. For only $5.00. I chose the sand which. So delicious. Loaded with pulled pork, a little BBQ sauce, not too much, just the right amount. White onion and pickles. So good, so filling. Breakfast tacos were meh at best. But I for the low price, I guess I got what I paid for. Tacos were a good size they just didn't have a lot of flavor. That is an easy fix. The tacos weren't bad, they just weren't that good. But looks like this place has been here a long time though so something has to be good about. Perhaps lunch and dinner. Look out for the owner and staff as I have never been to a more negative hateful environment. Eat outside with the birds which are worse than any begging dogs I have seen on tables that I believe have never been cleaned. Heaven forgive you park in the owner or staff parking that is not marked. They will just block you in and refuse to move. Food isn't horrible especially for the price but I have never been at the window watching them make it either reading other reviews in that nature I believe that I wouldn't want to watch and know. Rolled up at 2:58 and got in line behind a guy who was haggling with the staff about his lunch. Waited for 3 minutes, then stepped up to the window at 3:01. The guy in the window said, "sir, we closed at 3:00." For real. The only reason it's two stars and not just one is that in the past the folks there have been pretty nice. I've eaten a fair amount of BBQ if you check out my other reviews, so don't think that I'm panning a place with two stars. As others have rightly noted, in other parts of the country this would be considered excellent BBQ, here it is only so-so. Smokey's has been around forever at 4-points and their convenient locale + value pricing will always keep them in business. I'm also a fan of their excellent $5 BBQ beef sandwich, which I will defend to all comers as excellent. I personally find the rest of their fare, especially their brisket, to be bland and on the dry side. That said if you're in the area and need a bite by all means grab the 'wich and smile! This place gets 2 stars on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing on after finishing a meal here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. The experience trumped the food. I've had better BBQ but the dry humored/ sarcastic cashier/ cook can't be beat! Me and my 2 Californian comrades found this shack en route home from a long day on Lake Travis. We had no idea what to expect but it looked scary so that probably meant it was delicious. We ordered a family meal and some beef jerky. We were handed a pound of meat and an entire loaf of bread. The hot links were too spicy for me. The brisket was awesome. Potato salad couldn't be beat. The jerky was nothing short of a lesson in teeth extraction. I don't recommend that. FYI- they offered me "extra thin bread". In Texas, it means our regular bread. What we call "Texas Toast" is their regular "Bread." If you eat there, bugs will fly all over you and your food but it's all part of the honky tonk experience so we enjoyed it! Good times! read more

I have driven by this place for a number of years and never stopped in. Finally, decided to give it a try today. Ordered the chopped baked potato. The potato is surprisingly cooked to perfection. Very tender. They put a nice keeping load of chopped brisket along with cheddar cheese. The meet is very tender and moist. The barbecue sauce has a little kick butt is not too powerful. This little spot is on my list of Austin haunts every time I visit. Their pulled pork sandwich has gotten a little peppery over the years, but still good. I really like the fajita meat...very tender and juicy. I believe it's smoked for 10-12 hours and boy, it makes trying to bring a veggie that much harder. It's so good, I'm willing to risk a three hour plane ride to bring it back to California. read more

I have been eating delicious BBQ here for almost 20 years. When I lived down the street I got Breakfast Tacos and Brisket here often. This past Sunday I stopped by for a Brisket Sandwich and it was just as good as I remembered! They are located at the NW corner of 620/2222 in the same parking lot as Texaco and a Liquor store that cashes checks (they only take cash so this might be important info). There is no indoor seating. You place your order at the outdoor counter and wait for and eat your food at the picnic tables or get it to go. They get an extra star for allowing my butt sniffer. Anyone who trusts a dog not to lunge at the smell of roasting meat gets an extra star from me. But then my Pup is well behaved and lays under the table in hopes of dropped food.... read more

I went there the other day extremely curious to see how it was. I ordered two sandwiches, the chopped beef and a sliced beef. I also ordered potato salad, chips and 2 drinks. All of that came to $10. Not bad. The chopped beef was good. It had a nice smokey flavor and was pretty filling. I was not a fan of the sliced beef as it was a bit tough, had no flavor, and seemed a bit cold. I would not order that again. With Rudy's down the street, the choice comes down to who has the better chopped beef and which is the better deal. I won't eat anything else from either one (not a sausage fan). That's a tough one. I like Rudy's chopped beef, but it is a little more expensive. The sides are certainly cheaper at Smokey J's, but I am a big fan of Rudy's Sause. Since I normally keep some Rudy's Sause in my fridge, I guess I'd go with Smokey J's, but only by a little. In fact, since I get gas at Shell, near Rudy's, I could see me going to them more often out of convenience. Overall, it was average. It will fill you up and keep you coming back, but there is definitely better out there. read more
