Smash burger was very bland and cheese was barely melted and the bun was stale. I was walking by when the aroma of smoked bbq caught my attention. I followed my nose which led me to this hidden gem tucked away in a sushi food court. ?? As a bbq novice, I wasn't sure what to order at first. I settled on the brisket fries and my husband went with a pork sandwich. The brisket fries arrived piping hot, loaded with tender chunks of smoked brisket, creamy white cheese sauce, and tangy barbecue drizzle over a bed of crispy fries. I finally understood the magic of smoked BBQ. The brisket was incredibly tender and infused with that quintessential smoky bbq essence that had lured me here. My husband was very happy with his generously sized pulled pork sandwich. I couldn't finish all the fries, but I did polish off most of the meaty brisket chunks. Do be aware that some chunks have quite a bit of fat that you'll want to cut or bite off before swallowing. I felt like a Louisiana frat boy after this meal. Overall, this is a great spot to get your barbecue fix on the harbor. I can see this being a go-to place for summer weekends during the 4th of July or Labor Day. I do have to say that I was pleasantly surprised! Smokin' Jay's doesn't sauce everything like many places do. I had the tri-tip & brisket plate with chili beans and cole slaw on the side. The tri-tip was smoked and the flavor was very good. I chose the "cap" (moist) end of the brisket for my meal, and it didn't disappoint. Tender, juicy, moist and very flavorful. The chili beans were very tasty, and it came with a side of macaroni salad anyway. The slaw wasn't anything to write home about - but it certainly didn't detract from the meal itself. I also got a taste of their mac-n-cheese (not bad at all), and their french fries were very good as well. Service was very good. Order at the register and grab a table. We were there during a very busy lunch hour, but still was able to find a place to sit inside. It's clean and the music isn't ear-splittingly loud. It was a warm day but there was a cool breeze blowing through, so it was a pleasure sitting inside or out. Would I go back again? Yes, many times. Lord forgive me for I have sinned. This place is so good! The restaurant concept is unique to the area and I especially enjoy the type of food and drinks served here. I had the brisket fries, which you could easily get two meals out of. This dish was really rich, but I had a mango slush puppy with a creamy Dole whip to go with it and it really balanced my meal out. It was also a little nostalgic for me since I haven't had a slush puppy since I was a kid. The service was friendly and they do offer a military discount.
