We needed a moving company to assist us with our urgent relocation and provide a fair price! We decided to move to a smaller apartment because of our financial troubles. Friends strongly suggested this company, and it was well worth the investment. Their understanding of the emotional toll of leaving a long-loved house and their empathy during our first meeting was exactly what we needed to ease the transition! On a moving day, the crew arrived at the appointed hour and started packing. All four of them were extremely careful to honour our requests and secure our belongings precisely as we had requested. They took great care to wrap our pricey chinaware and picture frames with extra because of their fragility. Not only was the delivery prompt, but everything arrived at the new location in pristine condition. They volunteered to assist us in rearranging and reassembling the furniture so that we could make ourselves at home! A few weekends ago, we had Rick and Jared show up at noon for an estimated three hour job packing up our 15 ft. U-Haul. Rick was great: friendly and efficient. Jared moved slower than molasses in January from jump, and had a major attitude problem all afternoon. About 1:30 we figured we'd need an extra hour. Around 4:30 they were finally almost finished, and while my husband and I were dismantling a bathroom shelf for the dumpster, Jared asked me (for about the third time, and from the next room) about a microwave we'd indicated we might not take, and I told him (yet again) that he could probably have it, but I wanted to wait until we were done with the task we were in the middle of, and then we'd be ready to talk discharge. Next thing we knew, he'd grabbed the clipboard and stormed off saying "this isn't working out." By the time I got to the building hallway he was at the stairwell and I called after him "what's going on?" and he said "you're raising your voice at me!!" Which, got me there, he was pretty far away after finally moving at a typical adult pace. Rick was similarly flabbergasted by his colleague's tantrum, and we both followed him downstairs to discover that he'd literally started driving away, about to strand his coworker who muttered about possibly having to lyft home. By the time the clipboard was (literally, by Rick) chased down, we'd crept past 4:45, making for an *extremely* irritating additional 15 minute charge. Once my husband and I finished loading our personal items and went to lock the truck, we realized multiple items had been stacked in bizarre ways and broken, in addition to finding our open box cutter loose in a pile of stuff (on the other side, we also found plenty of poor wrapping with chips and scratches in most of our furniture). My husband called to discuss while we were on the road, because despite this now posted missive we do prefer to address managers directly vs. publicly first, and the owner, Greg, was completely uninterested. He just kept repeating how long he & Jared had both been at this, and told my husband about someone else ditching a job recently because the lady was drunk. Okay... and? Legit, good for them, but not relevant. I can't speak for Greg, but I've been in the workforce long enough to know that someone can do something for multiple years, and still suck at it! They were so thoughtful and considerate of our situation, and happily worked their way around it. They packed up our kitchen meticulously, and used sturdy boxes for glassware and extra cushioning for fragile items. It was relieving that everything made it over safely to us. At our new place, they even carried our heavy dining table up a narrow staircase without a single scratch. Hired these folks to move my 4 bdrm house. I setup my garage with tape outlining the area of a 26' box truck and proceeded to fill the garage with all of my furniture, shrink wrapped, and boxes. The loading of the truck took less than 30 minutes before we got to the last of the items, the big ones, a washer/dryer, couch, dual reclining loveseat, and a recliner. Loading the piano broke the ramp so they stopped to call the owner for direction. After nearly an hour of waiting, it was determined we would deliver what was loaded and return with another truck for the rest. Mind you, the ramp is still broken and the truck nearly full with other furniture and boxes. It took significantly longer to unload the truck with this ramp that I had to jury rig for them with plywood and 4x4 posts to make it work. In the end, they told me they were charging me for 4 hours, even though at least an hour of that time was spent trying to determine what to do. What's worse, the owner never called to schedule the completion of the job and cashed the check which I very stupidly gave his guys at the end of their work. He is now refusing to finish the job without paying for additional time and so now I am hiring someone else to finish the job. Mr. Greg Rivilli, the owner of this business, was rude and completely dismissive of the fact that he didn't complete the job. If you don't want to get scammed, do not hire these folks. read more

Movers and office rep are rude and dropped my move last minute. I am strained out of country due to COVID but have to move out of my condo in Portland. I asked my friend to help to direct the movers. The movers arrived and insisted on cash payment and they office insisted they have informed us of that at booking. They did not. As we were sorting out payment method and who can sign promise to pay liability with me being out of the country. The movers were rude to my friend and told him that he doesn't not speak English properly. My friend is German and has been US citizen for over 20 years working at a large IT company. His English is good. Then the movers dropped everything and left and told us because we cannot pay cash and get the paperwork done right away, we should find someone else to work with. I called the office and said I have to move out today and it's too late to find another moving company right now. It's payment and form, we can sort this out via digital signature and payment transfer. The office's response was "we are not going back." I repeated that I really do have to vacate the property today. Their office just said the same. We called another moving company from Craiglist and paid rush last minute moving arrangement fees. We were lucky that this other company came to our rescue. The other company's movers had no issue with my friend or communication. Facts: I hired them to do 2 consecutive moves - first from a first floor apartment to a friend's garage. Second, a couple of weeks later from that garage to a walk up apartment (2 flights of stairs, first to get into the building and then second leading to the apartment floor). All was explained by me upfront. These people Lie nonstop, disrespect you and your property with a smile and with an upfront of faked politeness (perhaps some of this attitude is reserved for female clients...read on). Lie #1: For both moves they show up with a bigger truck than needed (were my items moving around? They were covered with Shrink wrap, not blankets). During initial conversation, the owner tells me he'll charge me more if he has to use this truck, I said there's no need for it to move One Bedroom apartment. He then tells me hourly charges for 2 people and a regular size truck to move one bedroom apartment, and we agree on a date. Later, as I was making arrangements for parking permit, he tells me the large truck is the Only truck he's got because the other one is being repaired. This costs me $70 more ($70 x 3 car lengths total cost) to secure City parking permit. Lie 2: During 1st move, they broke expensive modern Italian table and instead of telling me upfront, one of the movers "fixed it" by putting liquid nails on it to hold it together. Said he'd take it to the office and they'll repair it later. This wasn't his "first rodeo" so he knows how to deal with this. During second move this table was then almost left outside by them, upside down on the grass, in front of my new apartment building, as I walked out to see them close up the truck door getting ready to leave. Lie 3: Second move - the same person shows up with a different driver. I repeatedly tell them I need furniture brought in First since I'm moving into a smaller space and Must put furniture pieces in place, then boxes. I tell them this several times before they packed the truck with items from the garage and again before they unloaded. They proceed to move boxes "to get them out of the way" with little to no regard to setting up my furniture properly. They stack smaller bins under large bins, boxes marked Fragile under boxes marked books and "work / hobby", they complain ALL the Time about the load, regardless of the fact that I'm carrying boxes up the stairs along side with them - QUESTION: If there was a Male doing this, would they have complained a third as much as they did? What do you think, Males out there??? And while all this complaining is going on, I come outside to find one of them chatting (Again) with someone and getting ready to load HIS piece of furniture on His truck - on My Time and Dime! But I digress about the lie... Finally, the last piece they bring in is an Antique Mahogany gate-leg table which I needed to be brought in among the first items... And I'm frankly in shock with what I see. The guy tells me matter-of-factly that the leg came out so he "fixed it"...you guessed it - he poured liquid nails on it. Both movers Knew there was a problem with the Antique table, both lied to the end and did not tell me. Did they expect I wouldn't notice it? Lie 4: The owner tells me he'll send the 1st broken table to a repair person and if I like the way they repaired the first table, I can give them the antique table to repair. When I call a week later he tells me HE Fixed the table. Said the basic insurance is .60 cents on a dollar and then figuring the weight, it didn't make sense for him to send it to a professional. Oh, it also got some scratches now, but this turns out to be particle board on expensive chrome base, he tells me, and they, movers, do not guarantee safety of particle board furniture. He then goes into how he would just drill and put screws through the top so it would never fall apart.... Can you imagine the shock that I was in as I'm listening to this self-satisfied individual going on and on about how he worked hard and fixed it and HE will do the same with my 19th century mahogany piece because he "fixed an oak table ones".... So let me say this: I know that moving is a hard job. This is why I provided water, lunch, break to eat lunch, and decent tips for them. The owner seems to mistake decency for being naive and foolish. I would rather be considered naive than stoop to the level of what these people are. I also feel it is important to share my experience and for you to make up your mind whether you want to deal with them - their selling point is "local family owned and operated". I can't help it but to think they behave at least somewhat more decent when there's a male around; with me they were dishonest and disrespectful. The issue was resolved in mediation. I appreciate that it was done and over fairly easily, and the owner of the house negotiated a resolution that was satisfactory to her. Her floors were repaired quickly, mediation was on 1/28/2020. She asked me today (2/5/2020), when I took her pupper out for walk if I noticed the floor was repaired. I didn't notice, but I always noticed the gouge before. So must have done a good repair. read more

And while we were organized, they did have to do quite a bit of maneuvering of their truck to get it to the property. They were on-time, masked-up, professional and hard working. We completed the second leg of our major move from Oregon to Prescott Arizona this past June 8. Hector was our mover who loaded our household goods from our storage in Oregon into a big Penske truck. He also towed our Rav4 on a trailer all the way to AZ. Hector pulled through and made it to Prescott AZ in 2 days. He was also in touch with me the whole time he was on the road and kept me posted where he was and gave me an estimated time of arrival so I can be there at our new home to meet him. When Hector arrived, he unloaded our household goods with ease and parked our Rav4 in front of our home. He also placed our furnitures, household items, boxes and bins in their appropriate locations in our new home very efficiently. My guitars, amps and Eagle wooden statue arrived without any damages. If there were things I asked him to move around, he gladly did it without any complains and he always smiled. Hector should be given an MVP Award with Smooth Move People because he's so reliable, responsible, strong and a hardworking gentleman. We're so glad to have worked with him again. Extremely unprofessional . We were scheduled at 9 am and they called on the evening of previous day to prepone to 7 am. We had to vacate the rented apartment and finding another mover was not easy so we had to accommodate . I noted time when they arrived (15 minutes late) but they billed me from 7:00 am in the end saying that they were in my street and thats when clock starts . The owners were great on the phone. They listened and understood our moving problems. Appointment was made very easily. The movers came and in less than 5 minutes decided that they wouldn't do the job. Admittedly the place was a total wreck. But we were waiting for the maid company to come in after to clean things up. Their job was get the stuff out. They just said no we won't help you no one else will. I have no problem saying that left me crying. I had to call frantically for new movers. This put us out of A LOT of money. Saying longer than we were supposed to, losing our maid service and money down the drain there for both parties. These guys have been blocking traffic on a five lane highway all day rather than using the parking lot. Why, you ask? So they don't have to walk as far. And guess what else? Every single person that honked or asked them to move all day long? They all get screamed at "FUCK YOU". THEN one of them backed into a huge tree limb and almost took it out. Theeeeen, the second truck broke down right on the highway blocking an entire lane during rush hour. Guess I'm adding to the slew of unfortunate events with this company. These people are about a quick buck, not about service. I guess you get what you pay for. Both of the men did a mostly* fine job of moving, but one or both of them smelled as if they had been on a week-long bender without a shower, and one had an open wound on his face. I had to open windows because I was holding my breath (and I have a strong stomach). *The movers opened up my Uhaul and began unpacking before even coming to the door first, which I found odd. The first box they picked up was open, as I had put my potted plants in it only to keep them from moving around during my drive from CA. Since they got to moving without speaking to me, they picked it up and all of my plants fell and broke immediately. Good start. And true to form: when I complained about the smell, the owner wrote back to mansplain about how, yes, if they drink the night before and don't eat breakfast, they will stink, but they have been movers for such-and-such years (okay, not the issue and zero apology). When I made a claim for my planters, his letter was all about blaming me for it, saying I set a "booby trap," and even though my planters were worth upwards of $80 (I was being modest, planters are expensive) he took it upon himself to reconfigure the price to $9. It was a Saturday and they said the only remedy they had was to move me the next day, Sunday, and charge me over time even though it was THEIR ERROR. Joe and Hans were the "dream team" for my recent move-out and I would definitely recommend these two. They arrived 10 minutes early, were personable and professional, and worked extremely hard during the entire 6-hour move! My mother recently passed away so I needed to move the belongings from her 3rd floor apartment in Milwaukie (with an extremely small elevator and lots of tight corners to work around). They also needed to move the truck several times so people could back out of their parking spaces. Not a single complaint with any of the challenges ... they just made it all work. I then needed them to stop at Goodwill for the items that needed to be donated, and they unloaded the smaller items at the donation trailer, then drove to the warehouse building to offload the larger items. Again, no problem. Next stop was a second floor apartment in Vancouver to deliver an adjustable bed, headboard and nightstand. They even helped troubleshoot when the remote to raise the head of the bed didn't work (turns out all that was needed was new batteries). Then the last stop was to deliver the rest of the items to my home in Ridgefield. Of course, most of the heavy stuff had to be carried upstairs, and they helped me rearrange some of my furniture to accommodate adding my mother's furniture to various rooms in my home. STAY AWAY. I wish I had read these reviews BEFORE booking my job with Smooth Move People. I am still shaking from the shocking phone conversation I had with Greg the owner. I have never had a business, let alone the OWNER, speak to me the way he did. My 595 sq ft apartment took 2 guys 5.5 hrs to move - my job was 3 hrs tops. When I complained to Greg about going over, I just ASSUMED he would offer some kind of credit to keep a customer - NOPE. He called me a liar, he accused me of going "ballistic", and told me "moving is not a science". He also told me no one had ever complained about his service - who's the liar now, Greg? Been calling since the first of august to schedule my move for The end of August and I've been calling them the first two weeks of August I've only ever received one call back and it was because they were telling me that I was not allowed to schedule more than two weeks in advance and when I finally got a hold of them into the second half of August, they were already fucking booked they never returned any of my calls, I called them every single day since august 14. When I first got a call back in the beginning of August and then told me that I would've been able to schedule move the day before I move and they always have six screws available no matter what. A lady over the phone today told me that they are booked up till the first even though I've been calling every single day since August 1st. Almost every call was ignored. Shortly after this review was posted, I was contacted by Greg AGAIN where he left another one of his rambling, threatening voice mails. After listening to it I felt obligated to contact the police and report his behavior. The police officer I spoke with offered to contact Greg on my behalf and tell him not to contact me anymore. IF he tries to contact me again, harassment charges will be filed against him. Seriously, that's how bad this guy is, that his former customers have to get the police involved to make him go away! Horrible experience. They were suppose to arrive at 1pm and didn't show up until 4pm, they had called at 12pm to say there were running late but 3 hours!!!!! They took way longer than they should have. Prior move was done in half the time with double the stuff. Was so disappointed when I went to look for my clothes and realize they forgot to get everything outta the master closet :( They ran outta packaging cellophane and asked me to run to home depot!! They had said the previous job took twice as long as they thought and used up ALL there supplies. I only had a bed that needed wrapped. Single gal with a bed, small table and super small couch. Shouldn't have taken so long. They ended up working late and asked me to go get them beer when I had said I'll be right back. I obliged and just wanted them gone!!! I huffed and puffed and lugged so much stuff up the stairs when the whole point was for me to do no moving with my horrible back injury. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!! They also knocked a whole stacked hand truck over and then said to me that I startled him!!! Just don't use them if your want a smooth move. They delivered a couch from a furniture store. A one-piece couch but three guys came into my apartment - only one wearing a mask. Only two were carrying the couch. The third guy just created a creepy vibe. I'm high risk/pregnant so this was definitely not ok. I live on the second story and there is an elevator but they charged an extra $20 for stairs at the last minute. That means to get a one-piece small couch from a store less than 10 minutes from my house it cost $95 for delivery and exposure to COVID. Compare to the large three-piece couch I had delivered from south Vancouver (40 minutes away) that took two guys who wore masks and cost $75. I tipped the latter. read more

I have moved many times with Willamette Valley Movers. They were unavailable the day I wished to move (Easter Sunday) so I tried the list of others. These guys were able to make time and I proceeded assuming I'd have the same great experience I've had using movers. Not so much. They showed up with alcohol on their breath, though they were on time! One of them seemed very experienced and in tune with customer relations; the other, not as much. Twitchy. I've never felt uncomfortable around my movers, but, I was glad I had a guy around that day. They did break an item in the move as well, (it fell off the truck) and a bureau that had previously been okay now came apart at the back. They were not very good about moving the boxes to the right rooms (at least, one of the two guys wasn't). They also asked about me giving a tip before they left my old location. They left before me, and arrived at least 10 minutes after me, to the new location. Obviously that was not the most direct route. The price was a little less than the competition at $85/hr and min. 3 hours. Free insurance - we will see how it works. $0.60/ per lb and we're talking about a nice large standing fan. I sense that is not going to cover the time/gas it takes me to find the replacement! I hope my experience was merely a one-off and that Smooth Moves is as reputable as the owner, who was very professional, made it sound after 24 years in business! read more

We went through all American moving and this company was sent out to do our move. First let me state the movers were great guys and worked very quickly. However when signing the paperwork they told me to check here and sign without telling me there was an option for paid insurance. There was an accident where my $500 grill fell off the truck after the movers were dropping something off that wasn't even mine at another location. It completely separated the lid from the base causing both pieces to be useless and needing complete replacement. Was told to fill out some paperwork and that the company would either fix my grill or replace it. I filled out the paperwork and received a hand written note saying that I had only signed for the free insurance and attached was a check for $70. Wasn't told my options My property was damaged when movers were dropping off their own PERSONAL things to one of their fathers. Now I'm left with a broken grill that I'll have to pay to have taken to a dump, hoping it doesn't cost more then $70 read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Highlights of the disaster including the guys blocking our street, backing into our fence, cracked a door frame inside, and didn't finish the move despite working for almost 10 hours. We had to hire another company to finish the job the next day. Softer issues included one of the guys never introducing himself, refusing to help the other with heavy furniture (resulting in a broken door frame), bad personal hygiene upon arrival, and a general terrible attitude from start to finish. DO NOT HIRE. I did give them an opportunity to make it right... and they didn't. The person who answers their phones told me TWICE that the owner would 'make it right' when he got back from his trip, and he never even called back after both of my follow-up phone calls over two months. Hans and Kerry were really professional and efficient with my move. They showed up in time and got all my stuff neatly into their not very big truck. They knew how to negotiate tough stairs and tight turns. No damage, no BS just hard work and great results. I would recommend them and find all the poor reviews puzzling. The loaders, Cary and Hans, out of Portland did a very poor job of packing. This was observed by both the driver of the moving company and the people of another moving company that unloaded for us. The loaders swore and scared our neighbors, took more time than necessary to load as they took long breaks as they tired out quickly and just threw many of our items into the truck. We had many damaged items including large book cases, antique furniture and a flat screen television. One of the men who unloaded was hurt as a result of boxes and bookcases just tumbling down. Greg, the owner, (very slick with his knowledge and delivery), responded by telling us it was our fault for not supplying enough blankets. They did not use all the blankets we provided. Nor did they use any of the rope we purchased to secure the load. He blamed the drivers because he said they are not careful in their driving with the load. He also suggested that the people who unloaded were not careful. Both the driver of the moving company and the men who unloaded our belongings were professional and superior in their work. worst movers ever..if I could give no stars I would...They showed up early and charged me for the 30 minutes they sat in the truck. they took a lunch...which they did not clock out for, so I had to pay their time there too. Don't get me wrong...I am an RN...and I know the importance of break time....but no employer has ever paid for my lunch break in 40 years. They were scheduled for 9:00 and showed up at 8:30....sat in their truck and charged me until I showed up at 9:00 to start. There job was done at 2:30 but they charged me another 15 minutes because their truck was broken down and they were on the phone with management... these people are the worst....when I called their manage Greg, he yelled and hung up on me and never got back to me.This is the worst moving company ever...good luck! I used Smooth Move twice. One week they emptied my duplex in Vancouver into my house in Lake Oswego. Then, once I got those assets settled, they emptied my storage unit and moved everything to LO. Yes, they were an hour late (prior move) the first time and about a half hour late the second. But once they got there, they were quick, helpful, eager to please and worked hard. (An aside, the second time it was 103° and I could see they were flagging. But they stuck with it). They packed boxes and got everything out of the Vancouver house, down to LO and in my other house before 5:30 pm. There was nothing broken and I didn't see any scratches. When they came back they emptied a storage container bigger than their truck and got everything down, placed it where I asked, helped me put a couple of things together and were on their way by 6 PM. The foot of my pine breakfast table was broken. I had watched them load it and didn't think they did anything obviously wrong. It is an old table, so there might've been a fault in the foot. But they insisted on making sure that it was repaired at their cost. I asked them if their repair guy ever refinished furniture. They said yes and agreed to take the entire table back to their shop, where the tabletop is now being refinished. I really liked these guys, they seemed honest, And helpful. They knew their business and they were very reasonable. I would hire them again tomorrow. read more

DO NOT HIRE! I was called by a friend to help her finish moving after the aforementioned moving company was going extremely slow she was afraid she wouldn't get moved in time. I arrived to both workers smoking in the moving truck as opposed to working. In the 90 minutes i was able to help, I packed and moved an entire bedroom, and the storage closet on the apartment balcony by myself. During that time I counted 7 smoke breaks (yes i counted) by Smooth Move People employee Hans. Hans also proceeded to yell at the customer after she asked that her bedding be made available that evening for her. He was extremely rude and vulgar. They took over 15 hours to move a 2 bedroom apartment!!! She wasn't in her new apartment (in the same complex) until after midnight and nothing got unloaded. A job that should have taken 6-8 hours was done very poorly and very rudely. The company now has had the audacity to charge her extra due to the slow movers! $1,700!! These guys saved my moving day! My roommate had arranged to have movers show up at 10am to move our two bedroom apartment to a new one. Well, at noon Smooth Move rolled up. They weren't late. No, they weren't even the guys we had hired! We had made arrangements with Northwest University Movers. Hector and Adolfo had no idea that the guys we really had hired had instead called Greg for an "emergency move" for him and "his wife" (my roommate). Greg helped us figure out what the heck was going on while the guys made pretty quick work of loading our stuff up into their truck from our second floor apartment. Nothing will beat watching them put our mattresses over the railing and catching them down below, like rock stars. When all was said and done it had been 3 1/4 hours, they had been nice, funny and professional and just generally fantastic to work with. What could have turned into a minor disaster for us turned out great, delay aside. Thanks guys! I would never hire anyone but these guys ever again. read more

Our family's experience was with Smooth Move People was very good. First of all: they're called Smooth Move. Like them already. Second of all: we were moving out of state with a sick toddler, a cat, and some back injuries. Long drives were out of the question for us. This small company was not only able to drive the truck of our stuff all the way to SoCal, they towed our family car with the truck, AND it cost us less than any other company quoted us. It was surprisingly difficult to find a company that would move our car along with our stuff, and these guys made me feel like we were in good hands. Certainly price-wise it felt fair (other companies cost a bit more and it really felt like a rip off.) The loaders were nice enough guys, they did a good job. After loading up the truck the guys drove it from PDX to SoCal. They arrived one day ahead of schedule which was much appreciated--did I mention this was Thanksgiving week? Then they unloaded all our stuff, again very professional, and when they saw we had a packaged Ikea bed frame, offered to construct it for us--no additional charge. I demurred, but they offered again...and again. Well, that is when they REALLY won me over. My back was messed up at the time and getting that frame constructed saved us a lot of stress. I really appreciated the effort. The whole time during the move, communication with the main office was very good. We never had a problem reaching them. The guys were friendly and professional; I felt they went above and beyond with their efforts; the costs were very competitive. If I were still in the area I would definitely use them again. read more

These guys are AWESOME! I refer people to them all the time. Every move has been great and I've used them about 4-5 times. Of course if you are packed things more like greased lightening. I had all my boxes packed and stacked and furniture disassembled and ready to go. I got an 8:00 a.m. appointment. I was in an upstairs apt (3 flights of stairs). They loaded the truck in 15 minutes. It took 20 minutes to get to the new place and it took them 15 minutes to move everything into the new place! 50 MINUTES! AND THEY ARE GENTLE WITH YOUR THINGS!! Terri read more

I've used Smooth Move People 4 times. The first three went fine and I had actually recommended them to multiple friends. The last time, and it most definitely will be the last time, was horrendous. They were 26 hours late, did an impartial job, made my wife feel extremely uncomfortable (I'll explain further), and stole about $700 worth of mostly irreplaceable whisky and mezcal from me. Fun fact, I called to talk about my experience and the owner told me he's pays Yelp to take down bad reviews, but seeing all the 1 stars still up, looks like he doesn't have enough money. He also told me that more expensive moving companies also have one star reviews, so no good options essentially means he'll always have business. So I guess, hire Smooth Move People if you want to help them race to the bottom. If you insist on hiring them (which I don't recommend), here's what I've learned: Only book the movers if you can guarantee you're the first job of the day and only use them if you're going to be there every step of the way. If you're the second job and the first one runs long, they just won't show up. The dispatcher and the moving team don't communicate with each other, so if the moving team is running late, they won't let you know. I had to regularly call to get updates on when our movers were coming and the dispatcher didn't know details. All my stuff was in boxes, I was off work and ready to move, I'd spent $130 to clear parking space in front of my building, and Smooth Move didn't make it. Their customer service strategy isn't customer service, it's all defensive. So when delays happen they basically just throw their hands in the air and say it's not their fault, and blame the first job of the day being unprepared. They don't care you've been inconvenience or are out money, it's not their fault. They'll come when they can get there, and if you don't like it, hire someone else. Literally, that's what they say. Second, always make sure you're there the whole time. Because Smooth Move didn't show up on my moving day, I had to be at work when they moved my apartment (all in, they were 26 hours late). I basically just left two strangers alone with all my stuff to move it. My wife was at our new place waiting on internet to get installed (also late, different story) and couldn't be at the apartment monitoring the move. They moved most of our stuff but left anything that seemed inconvenient. It took us 10 more trips to move everything in our cars after they were "done." Also because I wasn't monitoring things, they stole from us. I'm in the spirits industry and have a nice collection of booze. I don't drink it all the time, so unfortunately it took me a few months to realize that some of my most prized bottles didn't make the move. I called the company to talk about this and they said it was impossible (again, defensive) because they check the trucks at the end of the day. But obviously, movers left alone in a house can easily put a few boxes clearly labelled "booze" in the front seat of the truck and make a pit stop on their way home. I lost some really amazing mezcals I was gifted to by the distiller while at the distilleries in Oaxaca. As well as Scotches that don't exist anymore. They were prized possessions I had planned to share with friends for years, now they're gone. Lesson learned, don't let movers alone with your stuff ever. I wasn't planning on it, but they showed up a day late. Lastly, when they came 26 hours late, they had to park across the street because the parking I'd cleared for them expired. They also moved without my help. Because of this it meant that it was going to take longer for them to move, and because they charge hourly, it meant that despite showing up 26 hours late, they were going to profit more from me. When the movers asked for payment at the end of the day two things happened: 1) they said it'd be cheaper if we paid in cash (sketchy) 2) my wife asked about a discount for taking longer and being 26 hours late the movers called to check with their boss, left it on speaker, and she, standing alone with strange men in her home, got to hear the owner call her a "f****** b****" for asking for a discount. They gave us an hour off and did us the privilege of not charging overtime (fun fact, if they show up late, technically they can make you pay them time and a half for them working after 5pm). All in, if you really want to use the cheapest moving company in town, take a lot of precautions. As far as I'm concerned, if they're going to steal my stuff and then leave the job unfinished anyway, I'd rather just get a Uhaul and bribe my friends with pizza and some booze they won't steal from me. read more
