Snake & Butterfly has been on my list of places I want to visit. But it always seemed kind of far. Until today when I noticed it while browsing through the Campbell Farmer's Market. I walked inside and it's a tiny little cafe with limited seating. At the very front, near the door, there is a display filled with all these pretty little truffles. They all appear to be dark chocolate with a glossy marble swirl of different colors. I decided to get the white chocolate peach and passion fruit truffle. So very good. Especially if you're a fan of dark chocolate. Actually... Now that I think about it... I don't remember white chocolate. But whatever. The chocolate shell on the outside is dark and bittersweet. Inside the filling is fruity and sweet. I loved the contrast in flavors. You start out with the dark bittersweet portion and ended up with a nice fruity flavor on the inside. I sampled a few of their gelato flavors but opted not to get gelato today. I had more than enough sweets this week. I tried the buttermilk cucumber. It tastes exactly like cucumber and it was refreshing but I just couldn't get it because it was such an odd flavor for ice cream. The maple bacon was also good, but it so weird because it's a savory ice cream with bits of bacon throughout the ice cream. This place is perfect if you're looking for ice cream flavors that are not normal. They have interesting flavors that you would not see anywhere else. If you're looking to be adventurous in ice cream tasting, this would be the perfect place to go. And if you're looking for unique flavors in chocolate, this is also the place to go. This is an excellent chocolate and coffee spot right in the main downtown part of Campbell. While there is street parking there is also a free parking garage behind the building. So parking really isn't any issue here. There is inside and outside seating which are a little bit smaller then you might want. Both sections will seem kinda cramped with a half dozen or so people. This is not the spot to camp out for a few hours on a laptop, yet is perfect for a coffee and a sweet. The menu is pleasingly diverse. They offer every kind of coffee drink that can be made-usually using barefoot coffee-a delightful range of house made chocolate thingys (I recommend the truffles. if you get nothing else here get the truffles. You're welcome.) gelato from Lush (The name won't mean anything unless you're from San Francisco. Then you'll be like OHHH!!!) and a small stock of sundry items -coffee mugs, jars of jams and relish, bagged coffee, gift baskets, tshirts and whatnot. Lots and lots of tasty whatnot. Service is good verging on perfect. The baristas know their business, the house specialty coffee's are well thought out if on the sweet side, they are amenable to special requests, and thoroughly knowledgeable about the products they both make and serve. Lush makes for one mean affogato, and of course it's just fine by itself. Both the cappuccino's and espresso's are on deck. Pricing is whatever you want it to be. A coffee and a sweet can be had for 6-7 dollars (or a little bit less) depending on choices made, but it's totally possible to spend several hundred dollars on a large gift package. They do tastings for groups as small as two people (perfect for dates) should your little heart so desire, and from time to time they offer classes as well. So the coffee is dang near perfect and the chocolate is sheer heaven. That simply is not something you find everywhere. read more

This is a review of only the gelato. It should really be considered a proxy review of Lush Gelato (with a good variety but not a complete selection of flavors) because Snake & Butterfly proudly advertises that they serve that gelato maker's product. Snake & Butterfly is a place that serves somebody else's coffee (to be fair, most cafes do that), somebody else's gelato, and their own chocolate. I was considering getting some chocolate, but that's not really my thing presently. If I enter a chocolate phase, then I'll definitely return to try it. They request that customers limit samples to 3 flavors. I guess some jerk must have asked to try all the flavors then left at one point. I tasted some mango sorbetto (pretty good), cardamom orange (pretty well-spiced), and ricotta lemon (subtle and pleasant). Ricotta lemon won merely because I wanted to figure it out, but with the three other flavors that a large cup ($5.75 for 8 oz) allowed me, I went for the gusto and picked some flavors that I thought would impress. Hazelnut was the best. It was boldly flavored and had a solid and creamy texture. Vietnamese cinnamon was also quite good. It was softer and had a lot of cinnamon. Earl grey had pronounced flavor as well but had a hint of a fine grain (smaller than sand) in the texture. The ricotta lemon had the most of this fine grain going on, but it wasn't really offputting, just untrue to the smooth texture of proper gelato. I don't think it was very tart as I've read in other descriptions. Perhaps I will try Lush Gelato some day in one of their own storefronts. This proxy is a shorter drive for me, and it's better than Gelato Classico's store (also a longer drive). It's still clearly below the best that I've tried, but at least there's things that I can see myself eating and enjoying again. read more

Walking in on a Friday evening, the overall ambiance of the place is fairly cute with a few wooden tables placed randomly throughout the room. It was not busy at all and there was no line. The specialty menu did not show the prices, so you have to search for it up on the chalk board. The positive 3 stars is due to the tasty gelato. We did appreciate the helpful lady with the plaid dress and ponytail who let us take samples of the different gelato. She was super sweet and had great customer service right when we walked through the doors. The male worker with dark hair and a beard (wearing a cap) looked like he really did not want to be there though. -The ANDREA DELUXE (6.50) --Not a horrible price for a mocha but a little disappointing. Quite mediocre at best. The gelato was completely melted by the time they served it to me, so that the mocha was this room temperature muddle with random warm and cold spots. The whipped cream became uncomfortably clumpy. -Gelato Scoops (3.00 - 9.00) --Very creamy and nothing to complain about! The flavor selection is not overwhelming. Overall review, cute place for gelato. I would probably come back if I am in the area and am craving gelato but it's not something I want to go out of my way to visit. This is a cute little find all thanks to yelp! My friend and I were craving something sweet & found this spot. Great atmosphere with helpful workers. They are very friendly too. Greeted us as soon as we walked into the door! Also, while I was enjoying my gelato, the workers would come out & talk to the customers if there was no line. Which is great! They really got the know everyone in the store. I got the ricotta lemon & formidable blac cookie dough gelato. Ricotta lemon was surprisingly yummy!! Good balance of cheese & lemon! Try it!! The cookie dough has huge pieces of cookie dough & I mean like bigger than bite size. Three bites! & I had two cookie dough pieces! I got the small size & it fit two flavors for $3.75 My friend got the strawberry sorbet & lemon sorbet. The lemon was SUPER sour! But it blended so well with the strawberry. Together, it honestly tasted like strawberry lemonade! There was also great outdoor seating for this hot day! I want to come back & try the other flavors! Not the best Gelato, but still really good. I used to come here a lot before when it was known as Gelato Classico. But now as Snake and Butterfly, it's changed. No longer specializing in only gelato/sorbet ice cream - but also fine chocolates has somewhat limited their depth and focus on ice cream. I used to love the pistachio flavor that Gelato Classico carried, which the 3-4 times I hoped Snake and Butterfly would have, they didn't. Now at Snake and Butterfly, I usually get the dark chocolate or hazelnut + Affogato style. The hot shot of espresso over a creamy ice cream is heaven for any coffee/ice cream lover! Besides that, service is relatively fair - you can try as many flavors as you want. The cute little space offers indoor and outdoor seating. It is also at the end of downtown campbell strip, so it's far enough from all the noise (drunkards of Aquis) but still close and walk-able overall. read more

I'm very picky when it comes to how my hot chocolate beverages are made, but after talking to an employee they explained how they can make your hot chocolate any way you like (with milk/hot water/more or less cocoa powder). I feel sad to post this review. The times before that I came in were great. I used to come here before the change in ownership and they had great gelato and coffee drinks. Even after the change in ownership, they maintained a high quality, but things have changed recently. Yesterday I went in for a coffee but when I asked for a coffee drink, the man could barely communicate and let me know he couldn't make one. Why bother having the shop open if you can't serve what's on the menu? The time before that, I had a coffee that was pretty bland compared to what it used to be. $3.95 for a cup of coffee. They used Kirkland Colombian pre-ground coffee to make an espresso to then water down for coffee. They do not use Barefoot anymore. I couldn't get a pour over. The gelato was iced so hard the woman could not scoop it out. Sadly, the quality of the shop has gone down substantially. Cut, small shop on the strip of downtown Campbell. All of their tiny truffle chocolates are so delicately painted and beautiful. I appreciate gelato places that sell high quality unique flavors and execute them well without making them taste too artificially flavored. If that's what you want, this is the place to go! I've tried 3 different flavors here and found them all to be impeccable! They give you a large amount of sample too! I've had the Ricotta Lemon, Vietnamese Cinnamon, & Almond Toffee. While Ricotta Lemon sounds strange, this is my favorite! The texture of the Ricotta mixed with Lemon bits is incredibly addicting and you can't stop after one bite! As for the Vietnamese Cinnamon, it literally tastes like how it sounds...like an Iced Vietnamese Coffee with a dab of cinnamon inside...it's amazing! Keep in mind they change their flavors from time to time but keep it consistently the same for the most part. I usually get the $3 baby scoop as opposed to anything larger to "try to be healthy." But HAH. The ambiance of the place is very classy and peaceful too. They provide plenty of board games in case you want to chill here with your friends. Stopping by Snake & Butterfly for some delicious gelato has become a staple every time I go to Campbell. At Snake & Butterfly, they offer your usual suspects for flavors, as well as some very unique ones that don't sound like they would work, but they end up blowing your mind with a party of flavors in your mouth. The staff there is very nice about letting you sample the flavors, and they have great suggestions for those as indecisive as myself. I haven't gotten a chance to try their chocolates or marshmallows, but I love the fact that everything is made in-house. There is plenty of seating inside and a few spots outside as well. Love this place. It's a nice locally owned mom and pop business with very nice people. Additionally, they use Barefoot coffee, which is great coffee from another local business. If you live on the Westside of HWY 17 near downtown Campbell, this is a great alternative to get your Barefoot fix instead of the actual Barefoot location on the East side of HWY 17. Came by this shop in downtown Campbell the other day and it was a sore disappointment. The employee was sitting at the patron area and was helpful in informing me that they make their own chocolates in house. (There was no offering of a sample.) After informing her of my order, she used her hands (no gloves nor tongs) to grab a couple chocolates and put them in a wax bag. ...she didn't wash her hands prior either?!? After payment, she informed me that she doesn't have a paper receipt either?!? Disappointingly the chocolate wasn't fresh..definitely not worth the $2/piece that she was charging...bummer. Dolce Bella on Propsect is a much better choice and/or Jean Phillippe at the Aria in Las Vegas, if you're interested in quality, fresh chocolates with receipt paper and employees that use gloves/tongs to handle your premium chocolate. read more

I've been meaning to stop by Snake & Butterfly's new location forever, and finally, I did! Hooray! It's a super chic store with comfy couches and very welcoming staff. I LOVE the blue/purple paint. It's just so fun! Celeste helped my hubby and I decide on some Gelato flavors. I went with the strawberry chocolate and Chocolate crunch. OMG. So freaking good! Hubby had the liche and strawberry cheesecake. Also very good. I also returned home with S & B's salty peanut butter cups, Benjamin's Blend chocolate bar (76% cocoa). So yummy. I've been a fan of their chocolates for a LONG time. They were always at the Farmers Market and I am SO happy they've opened a retail location! I would highly recommend you try them. This is a very cool and artsy place that has gelato, dark chocolate, coffee, espresso, and shakes. My friend and I felt like we were sitting in a hip but not hipster sort of place in S.F when we went here for gelato the other day. The gelato here is very good! What's even better is that it's made from organic and local ingredients. When we were there, there was a guy with a guitar there singling in the corner. The whole place has an artsy and homey vibe to it. I got the chocolate chip gelato with the salted caramel topping. They sell the salted caramel topping as well as a few other caramel flavors in jars. I'm not sure how much it costs though. The flavor that I got was good! My friend got the chocolate chip cheesecake gelato and the peach sorbet. She said that the peach sorbet tasted like apple, but she liked it. They also sell coconut brittle as well as other flavors that are made with agave nectar. There is still some sugar in it, but the rest of the ingredients are natural. That is good, but it's a little to natural tasting for me. I prefer my brittle to be more buttery tasting. There are some unusual flavors available such as popcorn gelato and one with jalapeno in it! The chocolate that they sell here is dark chocolate which costs $4.00 a bar. I only got one since the lady in front of me told me that it's the best chocolate she's ever had and that I should get it. Well, unfortunately, I hate dark chocolate and I assumed that what I got was milk chocolate. It just said that the flavor was almond with sea salt, not dark chocolate. If you're in the area and looking for a cool place to relax with some coffee or gelato, this is the place to go! read more
