Highly recommend Menooa and his team at So Cal Air. An Internet installer noticed that I had a big tear in the flex ducting under my house. I was losing 30 to 40% of my airflow. Had a big brand corporate HVAC co come out. They gave an estimate that seemed high for fixing a a tear. Menooa's team came out and inspected all the ducts not just the torn one, even climbing into the attic. His quote was 1/3 of the big brand and his service was exceptional. Amazing Customer Service!! My furnace starting making a very loud rumbling. I called another HVAC company and they told me they could replace the motor on the furnace, but the bottom line was I needed a new furnace. I got an estimate from the first company and then called So Cal Air Conditioning and Heating to get a second opinion. Menooa arrived within a couple hours of my calling him. He took one look at the furnace and agreed that it was time to say goodbye. Menooa gave me an estimate on the spot, came in $300 less than the other company, and even offered to lend me some space heaters over the weekend while I was making my decision. The equipment brand they carry is one of the best, again not the cheapest, but we would have just been one of the 'lucky ones' that got a bad outdoor unit that doesn't connect properly with the indoor units (we got mini-splits). When I turned on my AC for the first time since last summer, my HVAC was not delivering cool air. An AC service company, informed me that my refrigerant had leaked and given that my system was 17 years old, the vendor suggested I consider replacing my HVAC. The vendor proposed a Goodman system which I had concerns about since they scored poorly on the Consumer Reports surveys on reliability and customer satisfaction. I then looked at other HVAC suppliers including Costco and Home Depot but their pricing was on the high side. They also proposed Lennox or Trane systems. However, when I studied the customer reviews on the manufacturer's own website, I was disappointed at the large number of poor reviews. I then decided to contact SoCal Air based on their positive ratings. Menooa showed up at the appointed time. I liked how he came dressed in overalls and was prepared to roll up his sleeves. Rather than jump into a sales pitch, he wanted to first confirm that there indeed was an issue. He proceeded to open up the outside unit and conducted some tests. Ultimately, he confirmed the leak and he made some recommendations. I was delighted to learn that SoCal Air offered American Standard HVAC's since they have, by far, the best ratings according to Consumer Reports' annual survey of subscribers. The quote from SoCal Air was also fair and competitive. I later learned that Menooa was the business owner and I liked that he was working evenings which allowed us to come to agreement quickly. SoCal's automated bid and acceptance process as well as their offering an online financing option were pluses. The SoCal Air installation team was professional and they did an excellent job. The new HVAC system works great and with the Nest App, controlling our comfort is a "breeze". I give SoCal Air my highest recommendation. read more

I first called them 9 months ago to come service my system after 2 years of living in my new house and chose them based on all the 5-star reviews. They told me I needed to replace the filter and gave me the option of replacing the filter that's built into the system, which is in the attic or adding screens and filters to the return on the ceiling of the main floor. They didn't say that one options was better or worse than the other. They quoted me about $400 for the work. All they did was put a pre-made screen on the ceiling and install hinges so that it can be opened easily. I have a second smaller return which they also did after I told them about it. It took them 1 hour to put the screen on the second return. They sent me a bill for $1060, which I thought was excessive. I asked them to send me an itemized bill and when I did they offered to knock $100 off. This seemed fishy to me, but I felt awkward haggling about pricing (I shouldn't have; everyone should be able to provide itemized receipt showing you the amount they charged is legit) so I paid the $960 and let it be. I then started having issues with my heat this month and called them to see if they could identify the issue. I had done some online research that said the issue could arise when you have dirty filters or the flame sensor needed to be cleaned. I had just replaced the filters the month before so I knew it couldn't be that. When the tech first arrived he admitted that he had accidentally left the temporary filter in the unit in the attic and believed that this was the issue. He removed it, noted that the heat was on and left. I spoke with the office and told them that I shouldn't have to pay for the visit since it was their tech who made the mistake, which to the officer manager's credit, she agreed. However, the heat was not fixed. They came back a second time and told me that some nonsense about newer systems, that there's nothing else they could do and that I should just wait until this system breaks. Mind you, it is less than 3 years old. I specifically asked the office manager at SoCal whether the tech had cleaned the flame sensor and I was told yes because they do that on every visit. The heat was still not fixed after SoCal's second visit so I made an appointment with a separate company. When the other company came, they cleaned the flame sensor and the issue was completely fixed. The second tech also told me that you had to open up the system to clean the flame sensor and it was a little bit of a pain to get to and that he did not think the prior company (SoCal) had actually cleaned it. Also, the second company that came told me that the built- in filter in the attic is 100 times better than the crappy filters that SoCal charged me to install. Turns out I have a Lennox system, which is a little more complicated than most and every company should know how to repair it, but clearly that wasn't the case this time so if you have a Lennox system I recommend finding a repair company from their website. read more

The job: Installing ducts, vents, central air on a two-story 1920's bungalow that's never had AC before. Also a new furnace and a mini-split in the garage. Quote process: In total, we contacted 6 AC companies to give us quotes to put central air in our home. We knew it would be difficult due to it being such an old home. Additionally, the second floor had no vents/ducts whatsoever (very cold in the winter up there), so new vents would need to be cut and new ducts made. 3 companies suggested central for the bottom floor, all window units (!!) or mini-splits for the top floor. We did not want to do that as we live in a historical district and did not want a bunch of ugly units poking out of walls or windows. 2 companies said they could do all central air, but they came up with very convoluted methods to achieve it, and in the end, one of them ghosted us and stopped returning our messages. The other company kept telling us they would need to send "someone else" to give us a more accurate quote...and that someone else never was available. Then there's Menooa at So Cal Air. He's the owner of the company, and he's the one who came to give us our quote. He went in the basement, he poked in the attic. He looked all around and figured out how to make central air work himself. On the spot. Gave us the quote that night. He also gave us a quote for mini-splits on the upper floor if we wanted that as an option. When I requested an air scrubber due to frequent nearby wildfires, he added it on and issued a new quote a few minutes later. Basically, excellent communication. The cost: Hard to compare it to the others since everyone had different methods, but I would say Menooa's quote was in the middle. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive. The work: 2.5 weeks after getting a quote, Menooa and his crew were at my house installing the system. All told, it took about 2 and a half days. Very quick given how much work was needed. Given COVID, I'm working from home, but I was only unable to work due to noise for maybe 20 or 30 minutes during that period. Very reasonable. The compressor unit he chose is very quiet, and he was able to install it in a place that other AC companies said couldn't be done. Result: It's currently 90-something degrees on my driveway, but a nice cool 72 degrees in my living room. :-) (Note: I will need to hire a separate contractor to build casings around the ducts.
