It's packed with flavor and heat if you love the spicy. Recently I purchased the bag of chicken skin chips - laarb flavor and let me tell you...... phenomenal! Ordered through uber eats maybe it was just what I ordered or an off day but got the garlic chicken with extra chicken and then heavenly jerky I paid almost 30 dollars for the garlic chicken and it was probably some of the worst I've had. Husband and I were in SD for the weekend and came here for dinner. I never had Lao food before (except for Lao sausages) so we decided to try the crispy rice dish. It was a very good dish! It had a lot of ingredients I'm familiar with like this fermented/cured sour pork that we also eat in Vietnamese cuisine. The dish is not too salty, you eat it with lettuce wrap but I was just eating it by the spoonful. Another dish we got was the panang curry with beef. Also really good. Last dish we got was the Lao sausage appetizer. It was ok IMO. I wouldn't order again but I think that's just me. A little salty for me but it did seem like a popular dish as a lot of tables ordered it. We also ordered the fried salmon belly but they accidentally brought us fried pork belly which I tired a piece of then realized it wasn't salmon. They took it back and didn't bring us the salmon but it was ok b/c we were really full. The fried pork belly that I did get to try a piece of was really really good. This place is at least a 4.8/5 I'm Asian and can tell you how authentic this place is. It's legit. Please don't give this place a 3/5 if you don't know what real Lao or Thai food taste like. This place is not a 4.3 it's def better than that. Customer service is insane Thai papaya salad with the funky sauce is really good balancing spicy, sour, sweet and savory with crunchy texture. I got the Lao plate and I love meat. Very different but flavors are great. The meat isn't salty at all and doesn't just taste like meat, It has flavor. I always try to prioritize cuisines that are less commonly found when visiting bigger cities and not to mention ones with lots of vegan options. This is why So Saap made it to the itinerary. I have had Laotian food mostly in DC and was excited to try it here again. So Saap had an extensive vegan menu in addition to the non-vegan offerings. The dishes were presented beautifully in Laotian plating style. My husband and I tried these dishes: - Nam Khao crispy rice salad w/ Fried Tofu- This was our favorite. We tend to always like this dish. -Kao poon Laotian style curry noodle soup -Sakoo (filled tapioca balls) with ground vegan chicken, sautéed radish, peanuts balled in tapioca top fried garlic, wrapped in lettuce, cilantro -They were kind to honor my request for only white ones as the green ones have food coloring which I prefer to avoid. The tapioca balls were harder and more chewy here I think and I didn't notice the filling as much. We enjoyed our meal and I'd totally come back here to try more in the future. We visited on February 17 and were greeted and seated immediately. There were about four other parties dining. My partner got the drunken noodles with chicken at a 4 spice level. We shared the fried salmon belly and I grabbed the laab flavored chicken skin snack bag to go. Longan Tea Smooth, cold, and refreshing. On the sweeter side but with a clear longan flavor. It reminded me of my mom's Sâm Bổ Lượng. So good with spicy food. Fried Salmon Belly For around 14.50, you get eight pieces with jel som sauce on the side. The sauce had garlic, cilantro, sweet, sour, and salty notes that paired perfectly with the fatty salmon. I do wish it was a little more crispy because some parts were soggy, but overall still a solid appetizer. Thai Boat Noodle Warm and comforting with a rich dark broth flavored with beef blood. I got two braised pieces of beef and a good handful of noodles. For $7 during happy hour, the portion felt right and it actually filled me up. Drunken Noodles They did this right. Great ratio of noodles, veggies, and protein. Just the right amount of seasoning and spice. No complaints here. Laab Chicken Skin Snack Bag If you grew up loving chicharrones, imagine that but with chicken skin flavor. Crisp, crunchy, then it melts in your mouth. Tangy from lime and nutty from toasted rice. It was easy enough to order right at the counter but the wait for the food became somewhat interminable. The lady said it would take 15 minutes for the food to be ready. It was closer to 35 minutes. But the atmosphere of the restaurant seems pretty chill and minimalist. The parking lot is very cramped though. I haven't been to this plaza in years and usually I just walk here since I live nearby. This is an interesting restaurant that serves up two different types of cuisine - Laotian and Thai. The staff were very friendly and helpful and looked delighted to be answering questions about their menu, of which we had a couple. The waitstaff gave the restaurant a very welcoming vibe, which is always appreciated, specially on a weekend after a long day. On to the food. We got three dishes: an appetizer, a sampler of sorts, and some noodles. 1.) The appetizer of choice were the Khmer Beef Skewers. These were incredibly flavorful and cooked really well. I was pretty surprised since at first glance, it looked like they'd be on the tougher side, but no, the were very tender. Definitely some of the best skewers I've had in recent memory. 2.) 1st main dish was the Laos Famous Plate, which comes with 6 components (papaya salad, fried meatballs, seen savanh, seen lod, lao sausage, jel mak len) and a side of rice. For the papaya salad, we opted for the lao style, and it was so flavorful and refreshing with a nice amount of heat! It's something I would definitely come back for! That along with the seen savanh were my favorites from this particular dish, closely followed by the seen lod. The jel mak len fried meatballs and sausage were alright, but were very clearly overshadowed by the other 3 components. 3.) I was very hungry this particular day, so we also ordered some Drunken Noodles to go along with the rest of the food, and I must say, these were not memorable at all, and were only average. Can't be mad at it but it's not something I'd recommend to people, and would definitely steer them towards ordering Lao items from the menu. I would definitely come back! Restaurant is located in a corner plaza with many other business. Plenty of parking although sometimes that area can be busy because of the Starbucks. Service was superb. I'd say a 6/10, fresh fish but not seasoned how I typically have tried and like poke to taste but presentation was beautiful. The steak platter was delicious. Also platted nicely and flavors were on point t. I'd score it a 9.5/10 and would have liked to have a crack sauce to go with it like our friends make at home. Nonetheless, we are spoiled with authentic Lao family cuisine and wanted something restaurant like to compare to and this was ok and it did the job. I'll keep trying the other items. I love the noodle dishes because I love how the pad Thai and drunken noodles are very glossy and bouncy.
