Oh my God, everything was SO delicious! Absolutely amazing from start to finish. We honestly didn't even get a chance to take pictures because we ate everything way too fast! The ceviche was incredible, so fresh and full of flavor. The nigiri was amazing too, super fresh, beautifully prepared, and literally melted in your mouth. Everything we ordered tasted fantastic. The quality of the food really stood out, and you can tell they care about every detail. Definitely one of those places where you're already thinking about what you'll order next time before you even leave. We will absolutely be back. Highly recommend!

All I could taste was lemon. Sour sushi.

When I went the first time I got the expensive sushi plate with different fresh fish. I thought it was good. Just went back with girlfriend and got specialty rolls. Whatever I had (the baja) just tasted like lemon juice. Hers (the rolling deep) just tasted like mayo. I wouldn't go back again based on how simple and overpowering the non-fish flavors were in this sushi.

Heck yeah I recommend this place. I dig the vibe from the owner. I don't frequent this place but every once in the while when I'm in the mood for sushi and I'm on Adams Ave between Normal Heights and Kensington this is the spot. It's really about an experience I had one night. I walked in just randomly and it was kinda busy but I think the owner was there and invited me so I sat at the bar since I was solo. I ended having a shot of saki with him and a couple that was seated next to me at the bar. They were taking shots and offered me one in a soy sauce bowl Anyways sushi was bomb too. It's a small spot so on a fri or sat night it might be kinda busy but other random days there is no wait. I recommend and support local small business owned by POC.

6 of us came to SoCal Sushi to celebrate our friend's birthday! The shop is small and we did have a reservation. It was accommodating for a group our size, however if you go with a larger party it might be a little more cramped inside the restaurant itself. The staff is very friendly and service was quick as we ordered multiple things at a time. We ordered a variety of nigiri, rolls, and appetizers. Everything was fresh and so good! The scallops were surprisingly delicious, it was not usually one of the items I order but it was very delicate and flavorful! The snapper was also a table favorite and every roll was delicious! I really liked the Kama, but it's also one of my favorite items to order at sushi. The table was also a big fan of anything butter fish! I would absolutely return again if I'm down in the area with how good everything was!

I really enjoyed this affordable sushi spot! Came by on my birthday, wanting to celebrate by eating sushi and really enjoyed my bday meal. I got the spider roll, caterpillar roll, and protein roll to split between two people. It was the perfect amount of sushi for us. The spider and caterpillar rolls are classics that you can't go wrong with. The protein roll was interesting. It was a lot to chew, but I still enjoyed it. My friend ate that protein roll up though.. They offer a bunch of different specialty rolls and deals/specials. Service was great. The place is a bit small but there is bar seating, tables, and outdoor seating as well. I'll be back to try more of their menu in the near future!

Hands down, this is THE BEST sushi spot in town. The staff is so friendly and welcoming, the sushi options are divine! They always play the best music. They always have a superb happy hour menu. It's the hospitality and fresh delicious sushi and kama's that always keep me coming back here. On my recent visit I tried butter fish for the first time and holy smokes, that alone deserves an award. The bluefin kama was out of this world and I can go on and on about the rolls. Hats off to SoCal Sushi. Looking forward to returning soon!

Food 5/5: all the nigiri's were very fresh, it felt like as I was eating they were melting in my mouth. You could literally taste the freshness. Service 5/5 Ambiance 4/5: a little small and bathroom wasn't the cleanest but food 100%.

Love this spot. It's a cozy space so there might be a wait. My favorites are the unagi roll and the spicy hamachi roll. I also like to try their specials whenever I come. Get some nigiri, you won't regret it! The staff is always friendly and there's a plus that there's an ice cream spot next door but their tempura pb&j is amazing!

The SoCal Roll was incredible, great balance of flavors and textures. We also got a spicy salmon and cali roll, both were quality rolls. Salmon melted in your mouth. We also got the mixed tempura. The batter was light and crispy and served great from the fryer. Each veggie and shrimp were delicious. It was the best tempura I've had. The place is super small so not the best for bigger parties but great for a date night. Service was great, servers were attentive and nice.

Service was okay, the outdoor seating is so cramped with so many fruit flies, and the food was nothing special esp for the price. We got three rolls and two fried appetizers, and none of them really stood out. Parking is inconvenient (tiny lot, watched someone hit a pole trying to get out, street parking is sparse), so I don't think I'd come back.

Me and my boyfriend got the avatar roll as recommended by the server and it was amazing. So fresh and tasted amazing.

The service was impeccable. A friend and I came here to meet with her brother. We had a stroller and they were able to accomodate us. The place is a little small but the sushi is super good. I really loved their crunchy roll and salmon nigiri. We also had the Lychee Sake and that was super good, for the 3 of us, we probably had 3 or 4 rounds of shots. Overall this was a great olace to eat at and I cant wait to come back !!!

Food: 8/10 Service: 7.5/10 Ambiance: 7.5/10 Cost: 7/10 We ordered the protein roll & I thought the sushi was decently fresh, but you didn't get a lot for the cost. The service was actually quite slow, especially given the fact that we were one of only two tables that were being used. We thought perhaps its because the server was busy doing other tasks in the back? But she was nice, and the sushi chefs were friendly. We did like that the server allowed us to put some candles on a birthday cake, so that was nice! :)

Cant remember what they're all called but they were all good and would 20/10 order them again. Ambiance was also wonderful! But what made this place even better was the staff. We were promptly sat down upon arriving. Servers frequently checked on us and were all so nice. But what really stood out was their empathy. Like i said, my son knocked out. He's 5. He woke up as we were leaving. by the time we figured out what was really upsetting him (he wanted to stay there and eat and wanted the table we were on), we have gotten out of our table and obviously the table was then cleaned for the next guests. So basically my lil one cried, took him to the bathroom bec unfortunately we dont get everything we want just bec we cry. So we went into the bathroom for him to cry his feelings out and be ready to get out. Was he loud? Absolutely. Was i embarrassed? Yes. But it was a lesson he needed to learn and i didnt want my discomfort to hinder that. (Mind you the bathroom was in the middle of the stairs lol midway the lower and the upper floor). So was i ashamed to get out? Yes. But the staff, so empathetic. So nice about it. Told me i didnt need to apologize and that they get it. And that made me feel better as a mama who walked out of there carrying a 5 year old out their door. No judgy stares. Just smiles and understanding eyes. So july 18 2026, 4-5pm staff, you are all so amazing and we truly appreciate it. We hope to be back again when in the area.

While the do offer Full Omakase for $189, Nigiri Omakase for $140, and Petite Omakase for $65, they also allow you to order nigiri, sashimi along with multiple other specials and cut rolls. On our first walk in experience, we ordered the Petite Omakase which included 4 seasonal dishes, 6 pieces of sushi, a light fish broth, and a small dessert, we also ordered some add-on sushi. On our first reservation here, we opted for the Full Omakase, which was absolutely amazing. This is meant to be opinionated criticism to help improve but I think the dishes could use more diversity and depth. Having done a fair share of omakase from places like Kinme and Matoi, I feel like this isn't that much more memorable or special and I'd hate for it to follow the same path Tadokoro did where they were absolutely my #1 choice and fell after they got their star (which they later lost). There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

We ordered the miso soup, spicy edamame, Den Miso pork belly skewers, tamarindo tuna ceviche, seabass serrano, crispy karikari tuna, and mochi ice cream for dessert. To drink, we had the Taiyo Margarita and the Clouds of Matcha cocktail. The spicy edamame was probably the only dish that fell a little short for us. It wasn't bad by any means, but we were hoping for more flavor. The absolute standout was the Den Miso pork belly skewers. My husband and I both took our first bite at the same time, looked at each other, and immediately said, "Oh!" We were genuinely surprised by how juicy, tender, and flavorful they were. There were only two skewers, but they packed so much flavor that we instantly wanted to order another plate. The tamarindo tuna ceviche was fresh, light, and refreshing. The taro chips added a nice crunch without overpowering the dish. The seabass serrano was enjoyable, though it wasn't a stand out for us. The crispy karikari tuna (spicy tuna over crispy rice) is one of my go-to orders whenever I visit a sushi restaurant, and this version was up to par. The only component I wasn't crazy about was the long, thin slice of avocado on top--I personally could have done without it, though my husband actually liked it, so that's just a matter of preference. We finished the meal with mochi ice cream, which was the perfect sweet ending. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Between the rooftop ambiance, attentive service, and several delicious dishes - especially those unforgettable pork belly skewers - we'd definitely come back and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a great dinner spot in the Gaslamp.
