Ichiban has been serving Hillcrest for decades, and I've been coming here for years. The women running the show are absolute legends and the hardest working ladies in the business, always friendly, and somehow keep everything moving fast no matter how busy it gets. The interior is cozy in that old-school, neighborhood way. You don't come here for flash, you come here because it's consistently good. Sushi is always fresh, always on point, and over the years they've quietly expanded the menu in the best way. The ramen sets? Legit comfort food status, perfect for when you want something hearty to go with your rolls. Places like Ichiban are what keep this neighborhood alive! Unpretentious, reliable, and run with heart. Hillcrest just wouldn't feel the same without it. Welp onto the next!

Felt really ripped off after ordering delivery and did not enjoy the food. The stamina udon was super bland. For $20, it had one piece of shrimp tempura that was all breading, a couple tiny pieces of chicken, one piece of broccoli, and a couple wontons that had disintegrated. The bento was equally bad. A tiny paper-thin piece of salmon, some dumplings that were just mush, and a tiny bit of chicken that was so drenched in sauce it was inedible.

This is my hole in the wall sushi spot that I come to every Friday after work as my treat. The owners are so kind and attentive, they have a real attention to their service they provide and are consistent. Sushi is amazing and made fresh. I almost don't want to hype it up too much because I wasn't to keep it all to myself, but alas they are TOO GOOD. I love it here, this is my favorite sushi in all of San Diego.

Solid spot. Nothing fancy. But I was super full for less than $20 which is more than I can say for most places in SD these days. They have a great happy hour for alcohol and rolls from 4-8 every day. I had a jumbo roll (chicken katsu) and a salmon roll. The perfect mini portion of katsu and a tasty salmon roll. You do order from the counter and they give you a number. The drink cups are disposable for the most part. And extra ginger or spicy mayo will cost you .50. So, they've done the math. They were playing FX on the TVs. Fancy it is not, but it does have its own charm. But great value sushi.

Unless you sit outside and people watch, there is really no ambience to speak of. But the two women who take your order and serve you are the best. The value is also amazing. My husband and I had three large drinks - 1 sake and 2 large beers, the stamina udon, two sushi rolls for $50! The stamina udon was good not great but perfect for the rainy day and it was a treasure trove of goodies. Slurpy noodles, dashi broth, fish cake, shrimp, chicken, dumplings. The spicy tuna was incredible. We are definitely going back. Forgot to mention, Happy Hour every night from 4-8 pm.

The good: they're quick, friendly, and they have a good happy hour menu from 4-8pm that's quite affordable. They're a neighborhood staple. The bad: the sushi here really doesn't taste all that great. I wish I could review it higher because of the nice staff and cheap prices, but I can't justifiably leave a 4 star for food that doesn't taste very good. The spicy chicken teriyaki bowl is better than the sushi rolls at least. Realistically, despite the lower review I'd still probably to-go food from here in a crunch.

The food was not only super tasty but very well priced. I got two rolls on happy hour (4-8pm) for about $14 dollars and it was super filling as well. The service was very friendly and quick. Parking is street parking but weekdays aren't too difficult to find parking. It's a little small inside but there is outdoor seating. Will be coming back!

No-frills sushi spot for a good price. They have happy hour on drinks and food 4-8pm daily. I got two rolls for $16 and left full. We ordered at the counter and had our food delivered to our table. The staff was friendly and efficient. They have indoor and outdoor seating, the ambiance is nothing special.

Not satisfied..small serving... not fresh sashimi obviously dry cut...the baked salmon was so thin..not worth it giving a 18% tip..

When you only ate somewhere once but they remember you that makes you want to keep coming back! One big draw for me is the kids meal and options/service for kids. If a kid is under 7 they don't charge for them to split your meal with you and they can still get their own soup bowl and chair. Also, they have a kids meal option for 10 and under. My kids absolutely love being treated like real customers. They get to cook their own food and the team addresses them kindly and tends to them. By the nature of this type of meal there is a decent amount of checking in the waitstaff has to do like adjusting cook temps, delivering plates and drinks, coming back for add ons etc so it is a good restaurant experience for kids. They even have high high chairs (not a typo) for the babies. The food is good. Everything is prepped to order... you can literally see people slicing your meat or putting your vegetables together in the back. I come here because I want quality and not the volume of an ACYE place. I'd prefer to spend my calories wisely. I was surprised that it was full but no wait on a weekday. It's hard to find somewhere with a vibe on a weekday but this place has one. It's a short drive from the zoo and Balboa park so I'm sure the team will see us again.

There's indoor, outdoor, and bar seating. The service here was excellent. Everyone was super friendly and checked in on us and apologized for the wait. Interior of the restaurant is very cute - it's small and gives off a modern/charming Japanese cafe vibe with wooden accents. The food was AMAZINGGGG - my favorite was the Napolita pasta - I love the flavor of the tomato sauce they use for this pasta and the ham was amazing. I also highly enjoyed the omurice, which was the best I've had - it was so flavorful and egg was soft and creamy. The chicken karaage was very fresh and crispy on the outside. The mango shaved snow was also phenomenal - I love the mango puree they used on the shaved snow and the mangos were super sweet!! There's some street parking nearby right in front of restauraunt and within nearby neighborhoods. Highly recommend!!

Even the bathroom had a heated toilet lol that's very Japan like. The food was pretty good. We got the omurice which my husband ate so fast, it's on the sweeter side, the egg could've been a little more runny but it was still good overall. We got the karage chicken, it was very flavorful and the breading was light which I liked and it didn't taste too oily. The curry was super good, the meat was tender and the curry sauce itself had a little spicy kick in it but still super flavorful. Also we got that huge tuna mayo onigiri which was like super sized but it was $8 so yea. It had a lot of tuna and it was packed really well. I was so full but the dessert looked amazing. We tried the matcha latte it was good but tasted just like sugar and milk lol There is no parking, u have to find street parking and there's no cross walk so u basically gotta jay walk if u park on the other side. Also the place isn't that big so it's not great for big parties, maybe for a family of 6 is the most you can accommodate. There is bar seating and limited outdoor seating. The service was great tho, and it's such a cute spot.

A must-visit if you're in San Diego!…read more We saw this place recommended on TikTok for brunch and decided to give it a try. We ordered the beignets, Matcha Latte Tiramisu, Curry Hamburger, and the U.S. Fried Rice. Everything we ordered was delicious, but the standout was definitely the beignets! We loved that they were made fresh to order, and the matcha and sesame dipping sauces made them even better. Our server was very friendly and checked in on us throughout our meal to make sure we had everything we needed. Thank you for the great service! The restaurant also has plenty of tables, making it a great spot for both small and larger groups. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in San Diego for brunch! P.S. We only had to wait 30 minutes to be seated which was a lot better than 2 hours. Little did we know, it would take a whole hour for us to get our food. We honestly could've waited the 2 hours for Morning Glory and gotten our food at the same time if not earlier. The restaurant wasn't packed with customers but they were definitely short staffed or something because there were two couples sitting next to us who were also waiting for their food. One couple was ready to leave when their food came out at that exact moment. The servers did apologize and told us that they were having issues with the kitchen. They also offered us all free orange juice. However, if they knew they were having issues with the kitchen then they should've told us earlier before we got seated so people could go elsewhere rather than waiting an hour for their food. Overall, service here was very poor. In terms of food, it was unfortunately pretty good but not worth the wait. I really liked the simple toast with matcha cream on top as well as the curry hamburg. My friend ordered the shakshuka (not pictured because it came last and everyone just wanted to eat at that point) which was also pretty good. For the avocado toast, the toast was too hard so I wouldn't recommend it. We also ordered a yuzu and matcha yuzu mimosa. Both tasted like yuzu. The matcha yuzu one was basically a green yuzu mimosa. They have a vero water purification system so their water was really good lol.

Service was ok, they were attentive but definitely slow getting the bill and that awkwardness of them hovering as they hand you the machine to pay with your card and the screen shows the tip. it's like ugh they are standing there starring kind of makes you feel awkward. :: ORDER :: MISO SOUP ($4.50) - nothing special about their miso soup and feel it's a dollar more than many other average sushi restaurants. I did like gave more tofu in their soup. RECOMMEND ULTIMATE HAMACHI ($19.00) - Salmon, avocado and cucumber. Topped w/ Yellowtail, fresh lemon slices, and ponzu. I was told this was one of the two most popular/ordered rolls off the menu. I was thinking this was going to be a very creamy roll with a splash of citrus and would love it but the yellowtail fell below standard for me. Although the piece of yellowtail is small and on top of the sushi resting underneath the lemon slices - towards the middle of eating roll the yellowtail seemed to have a subtle fishy taste for my liking (yellow tail should not be fishy). Perhaps it was the quality of the fish or what but something abut it wasn't it. You won't notice if you are dunking your rolls in soy sauce or letting the lemon slices hide the flavor but I was able to taste it. I ended up plucking the yellowtail off of my rolls and the rolls were up to standard as what I was expecting... creamy with a splash of citrus, that told me that the yellowtail was def off the night I ate there. I'm sure I'd be back but not in a rush. There are many other restaurants to be had. Until the next review...
