Do not order the Valentine's special they have advertised. My partner and I went last night and saw a flyer for it left with our menus and we asked the server if we could do that (starter, two entrees, and a dessert for $45) for our meal. She said it was no problem and brought food out as ordered. She looked to my partner for his order before I was finished ordering mine, and she wasn't very attentive with refills, but she was still kind. At the end of the meal, she didn't mention the dessert that was included so we asked about it and she said that she "entered our orders wrong in the system" so she could get us the dessert but would have to ask her manager to fix it, but she said this wouldn't be an issue. We waited for nearly ten minutes for our tres leches to be brought out (to-go), just for her to hand us the check and say "I couldn't fix it" before leaving... the check she handed us was $20 in addition to what the deal was supposed to be. We made it very clear from the start that we wanted to order that special that was advertised, but she entered everything in separately. What we had ordered was way too much food for us too, so had we known that, we would've ordered less to begin with so we wouldn't be stuck with to-go boxes. However, we were stuck paying over $65 for something advertised as $45 for a meal that was mediocre at best. I'm honestly ashamed that I didn't speak up more about it while we were there, but my partner just wanted to leave. The icing on the cake (no pun intended), was that when we tried the tres leches back at home later, it was the most dense cake we've ever had, we couldn't get past one bite. Considering the lack of communication and care, this was unusually disappointing and I will not be back anytime soon. Note: Our receipt that was taken home wasn't itemized but we ordered two diet cokes (knowing it would obviously be an additional cost- but not $20), the chips and salsa flight, my partner ordered three carne asada tacos, I ordered two fried mushroom tacos and one fried avocado taco, and we ordered the tres leches. Exactly the right amount of snap and great flavor. (I know chips sound easy, but these were some of best I ever had. You have toorder and pay for them, but worth it.) The Mango Tango Bowl was outstanding. So much flavor, and not just spice. My wife enjoyed the Chicken Tinga and Fried Avocado Tacos, and enjoyed them a lot. The churros for dessert were only okay. I had the pleasure of attending a Yelp event here awhile back, but had not made it back for a regular meal. So, I hopped in the car and headed south for lunch. I found some metered street parking on a side street and walked over to the restaurant. (There are parking garages not far away also!) The interior is arranged with the bar area on the left and the main dining area on the right extending all the way to the back. I was greeted and taken to a 2-top table outside the bar. After being greeted and poured chilled water by my waitress, I ordered the Mexican Street Corn as a starter. Note that they offer it both on and off the cob. I went with the elotes on the cob style. Soon, I was brought a metal tray with a liner that had two halves of corn with individual spears. The corn was topped with a colorful variety of toppings and was really good! The corn may have been a tad overcooked, but it wasn't chewy. It separated from the cob easily and the toppings that spilled off were so good that I finished those off with my fork. I also ordered a pair of tacos: an Ahi Tuna and a Carne Asada (steak). I was given my choice of corn or flour shell. Again, the wait time was minimal as the two tacos arrived on a shared lined metal tray. I started with the Ahi tuna. Wow, this was delicious! No skimping on the meat, and lots of flavorful toppings. It was a little messy since the shells are small and are really loaded, but they do have decent sized napkins here, so mine got a lot of use. Highly recommend! I don't know if by eating the Carne Asada second that it continued to cook as it rested while I ate my other taco or not. But the steak was not tender and had a definite chew to it. The flavor was good and paired well with the other toppings, but it was distracting from my enjoyment of the taco. The restaurant carries a full 3-way liquor license, so they do offer a nice variety of alcoholic beverages. I passed on this option on this visit, though I have had them before. I was surprised that I was in and out of the restaurant in just over a half hour, so if it is this well run everyday, I would have no problem with recommending it as a place for someone to go on their lunch hour and still have travel time. Holy pozole! Social Cantina elevates traditional rustic Mexican cuisine and makes each dish something special. Pozole is one of my favorite -- but hard to find -- Mexican dishes. I prefer it with just a little more kick, but the flavors were on point! Our tacos were also flavorful and delicious, especially the fish taco, with loads of fresh ingredients. The drinks were the perfect compliment to the food -- and big. I'm not a fan of the standard margarita, so having the option for a watermelon margarita was great and refreshing on a hot day. Came here last Friday to meet up with a friend and boy the line was long. This place is pretty popular among the IU crowd as people are always dropping in for margaritas and tacos. Basically if you decide to come on a Friday night, be prepared to wait - or else come early! We went back after the 3-star review to meet up with some friend. We had two pinneaple margarita pitchers and, oh my, that was SO delicious. A bit tart but with great flavor. We ordered the nachos and those are the best nachos I've had in a while. The shrimp verde and pastor tacos were amazing. A bit pricey, but great flavor and quality food. Came before the dinner rush on a Saturday. The host was sitting another table as we were walking in so we sat at the bar. The bartender didn't know the definition of hustle, but that is my opinion as I watched her work. I felt as though she took a lot longer to do things as she should have. However, the food was really good so that saved the review. The baja fish was my favorite the last time I dined here, but this time it was the chicken tinka. All the ingredients go really well together. Last time, there was way too much creme fresh on the baja fish and this time there was barely any so the fish was dry. We ordered 3 shots of the house tequila with pineapple juice. You could get either pineapple juice with the shots or a lime and salt. Pineapple juice was a nice alternative. The summer berry sangria was good but I would've liked it better if it was sweeter. My boyfriend really liked his pineapple margherita. read more

Great vibes, great food, great service! We got the skinny marg because it looked like a gold blend of flavors but it really just tasted like a regular marg. We wished we would have tried a different one like the blueberry basil, but the skinny marg was still good. The quest fundido was amazing but the stuffed avocado...I read that description and just had to get it. An avocado with ahi tuna, cream cheese, pico, a sweet glaze, and probably something else I'm forgetting. It was like nothing else I'd never had. While I still really enjoy the food and drinks offered at Social Cantina, I have recently found their service to be pretty terrible. If you're in a rush at all I would not recommend going to Social Cantina unless you plan to sit at the bar. The staff is friendly but the wait between ordering and receiving menu items is terrible. My partner and I ordered tequila shots on a slow afternoon and waited at around 15 minutes before receiving them. A bit ridiculous. I also am not usually one to complain about server accidents but during our last visit the server tripped and spilled like 3 shots of tequila on me (not fun!) and didn't even comp my drink or anything. She just brought us new shots..... If you make a mistake that's fine but at least try to make up for it. Leaving a customer soaking wet with tequila and only offering a "sorry" is a bit weak customer service wise. Anyhow, food is still good. Service is awful. Unsure how often I'll be going in the future. read more

I have been to Social Cantina a few times. Usually, I get the fried fish tacos. Tonight I ordered the baja fish tacos (fried fish) and a fried mushroom taco. They used to make one of their tortilla shells in house and I couldn't remember if it was the flour ones or the corn ones, so I asked the server. He said it was the corn, so that's what I got. Tacos were out literally in 5 minutes. First, I ate the mushroom taco. It was not bad. I immediately realized that the corn tortilla shells were NOT homemade. They were a little dry and a little stiff. A typical corn tortilla. I'd give that taco a 3 out of 5. It was fine, but I would probably not order it again. When I got to the fish tacos, I realized that they were not freshly prepared. They tasted like they had been sitting awhile. Disappointed. Also, the fish tasted like it might have been fried in old cooking oil. They were a little more fishy than I would have liked. I have had them several times and they had been very tasty, but today's meal was just off. You pay by the taco, and they are about $5/each. The starters like chips and queso or chips and guac are PRICEY! You pay like $12 or something like that for the chips and dip as a starter. I think that's a bit ridiculous. Also their drinks (like margaritas or whatever) are a little on the pricey side, too, and they aren't very big. The waiter was very attentive. I have no complaints about the service. The lights are a tad dimmer than I prefer. Us older folks don't quite see as well. Based on my experience today, I am not inclined to go back any time soon. read more

I've been here quite a bit because it's a friend's preferred spot to catch up. The atmosphere is kinda cool. I would put emphasis on the social aspect of social cantina, because... the service is... look, when it's busy, those kids break their backs to keep up and they actually look pretty understaffed. When it's not busy, you still can't get someone to your table. They are all gabbing at the bar. Come here for a mediocre pitcher of margs. The wait staff will completely leave you alone after that, busy or not, and that's just the truth. Having to pay for chips and salsa is gimmicky. This ain't qdoba. Or chipotle. We're not grabbing and going. I am a seasoned eater of mexican/tex-mex restaurants and I have never seen that at a real restaurant. Ever. I took the bait anyways and. Yeah. Never again. It's nothing special. They sprinkle tajin on the chips (and like everything else they serve, including some drinks. Gross.). That's it. The tequila queso is... not my favorite either. The normal chicken or beef tacos have zero flavor. The weird tacos are where it's at like the pork belly, fried mushroom, fried avocado. Don't order the street corn. Not good. First impression. A rainy Thursday evening. School is out for Summer so not very crowded. Excellent service, perhaps because the server is roommates with someone in our party? Maybe. Still, great service. Decent selection of Tap beers (because the Social Cantina is owned by the folks who own the Tap). Good margaritas according to a couple of members of our party. My beer was nice and cold. The food is not bad. I had a fish taco and a fried avocado taco. I liked the fish taco a lot. The avocado taco was meh. Couldn't really tell it was an avocado. The question is, why do you only serve the tacos with one tortilla? Two tortillas with each taco would be more authentic and make the tacos worth what you charge. I did not like the guacamole. It desperately needed salt and why is there a ton of shredded radish on top? Weird. All in all, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Social Cantina. Would definitely try it again. read more

Two words: TACO TUESDAY!! I went for the first time today and didn't even realize they had day of the week deals until I saw the menu. And it was my lucky day because Taco Tuesday = $3 each taco. My friend and I got 3 tacos each and all were so unique in flavor and the ingredients tasted fresh and went well together. I would say that these are a more gourmet spin on the typical taco, hence $3 price. The portion sizes were decent - wish it was a little bigger but don't we all? The strawberry marg tasted a little too strong for my taste but tasted decent. I definitely felt a little warm by the end of finishing my drink. We are locals who enjoy trying our local offerings as much as possible. We've been to Social several times since they first opened and unlike what we've encountered in a lot of places, this has seemed to actually improve over time. I have tried several different entrees, each has been decent at the very least. Last night I had the Enchiladas Carnitas... Just very good. Nice amount of spice, not dry but not absolutely soaked in sauce. Only complaint is that the menu said Charra Beans were on the side but instead I got the Black Beans which are just meh. Service has been very good every time. Prices for downtown are quite reasonable. This is part of our regular rotation now. read more

Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, no reservation was needed. They had plenty of indoor seating and a small section of outdoor seating available. Menus were available via QR codes, like most places in the area. We were seated right away and had a nice, big booth for our group of four. The tacos here are street style tacos so that you can mix and match and choose from corn or flour tortillas. Along with chips and queso, we tried several different tacos. The Americano, Chicken Tinga, and Baja Fish were all decent choices. We did think the Baja was a little spicier than we would have liked. While we were told by the server they were known for their margaritas but we decided to go a different route. Two of us had the Socialite, which we both really enjoyed. All in all, this was a solid choice. Food was great and it was within walking distance from our hotel (the Hyatt). We would definitely come back if we're in the area again. read more

As far as taco places go, this is probably my favorite I've tried. Usually you'll get skimped on the amount of meat/size of your taco... not at Social. Their tacos are very filling and worth the price. Probably best to lean towards only two if you get an appetizer. I don't love how you have to pay for a chip refill, but this place really is a good bang for your buck. read more

I had a carne asada taco and a quesadilla with pork. The quesadilla was delicious! The cheese was melty and the pork provided a nice bit. I especially enjoyed the sauce that accompanied the dish. Went to Bloomington for a day/night after all the kids went home for Holiday break (starting Thanksgiving weekend). Stopped for the first time here. While food was impressive and the one single drink was pretty common, I rated the 4 mostly on getting in the place. We waited at the hostess stand, then looked to the bar side to be a bit more visible (staff was watching football). Finally someone asked if we were picking up or what we needed. They had to find someone else to seat up (there were maybe two or three other tables of people--plenty of spread out far apart spaces were open).
