We've been curious about social cantina ever since it opened. I took my mom here for a Mother's Day lunch without a reservation. I was shocked when it was barely busy. Our server was a nice girl, but extremely slow service. We had to ask for everything--straws, more water, more chips. She checked in on us maybe twice during our whole meal and didn't deliver our food. Food was pretty mediocre and had little to no seasoning. I'm still not 100% sure that the Margarita actually had alcohol in it as it was incredibly weak. The chips and dip flight is pretty cool in theory, but the queso and guac are the only dips that I would get. Everything else is just...meh. Your run of the mill Mexican joint at the corner will have better food and service than here. I would probably go somewhere else unless you're just looking for a cool vibe. read more

Such a vibrant and fun spot! The decor really makes the whole experience feel lively, and the staff was so nice and welcoming. We ordered three drinks for the table, and unfortunately only one person truly loved theirs, which was a bit of a letdown. Randomly stopped in here for what I thought was going to be a cool margarita to help offset the extremely hot day. Upon walking in, it felt like a total vibe. It was a Sunday late afternoon but it felt like a Mexican lounge. The music was ON POINT, the sun was shining in, the staff felt fun, you could tell the people that were there were having a great time. There were couples, girlfriends catching up, first dates (verified by a casual conversation), and solo just sitting in there enjoying a meal. So what I thought was going to just be a drink, quickly made me want to stay longer. We sat at the bar and ordered appetizers, drinks and two meals. All were fantastic. The chicken burrito was definitely my favorite, but the tacos weren't too shabby either. Our server made us feel very welcome and offered suggestions when we were torn on what exactly to order. The bill was a little over $100 with the tip but again that included the chips and salsa sampler, 2 meals and 2 drinks, and in Carmel, so I'd say not badly priced. They do have outdoor seating which is nice and street parking. We lucked up and found a parking spot near by, but not sure where you park if you didn't luck up on a spot. read more

To start - Service was good. We had a party of 6 on a Saturday night, so I can understand them being busy. We ordered chips and salsa and a pitcher of margs at the same time. The marg pitcher came... but not the chips and salsa. The chips and salsa came at the same time as our meals. They did comp it as it took so long. Our meals came out - most were lacking in flavor and some were missing toppings too. Meals were generally disappointing. We've had much better experiences in the past, so we'll likely be back, but will likely give it some time until then. read more

Go here for the birria tacos! They have fun tacos of the month, November is a Thanksgiving taco. Love the creativity. Tried the chorizo appetizer and it was okay. They daily drink specials, we went and they had a $25 margarita pitcher. Great location for the summer as they have outdoor seating. Cons: I went for my favorite jalapeños appetizer and they took it off their menu. I was so upset. Our waitress was good, could have been a little more attentive, but we weren't in a rush. The social nachos are always delicious but it could have been a little more saucy. The chicken quesadillas lacked flavor and the tacos (fried avocado, mushroom, and Baja shrimp) were okay. Hadn't been here in a while and were looking to get out after a huge snow storm had shut us in for a couple of days. It was relatively quiet inside on a Tuesday night and also a little cold in the dining area, but it was freakishly cold outside as well. Music playlist was a nice selection of adult alternative from the past decade or so. We were considering doing their Devour Menu, but learned it was still Happy Hour (Happy Hour is M-F 3:00-6:00) as well as Taco Tuesday (all tacos $3), so we chose to order from those menus instead. Happy Hour Social Nachos are $6 and are a very good blend of chips and toppings at that price. Wife said she would order that again for herself as a dinner. Other food items on the Happy Hour include $6 for a quesadilla or spring roll, although we didn't try those. Mexican Draft Beers are only $3, but apparently the only beer that fit that category was a basic Modelo, so I passed. Wife ordered a Fried Mushroom taco, but apparently wasn't enamored with it. I ordered a Baja Fish and a Fried Avocado. They both had excellent flavor and were pretty messy to eat. Size-wise, they were on the smaller side. Probably wouldn't have thought as fondly of them at the regular price, but at $3 I would do each of them again. Also ordered the Churros as we were belatedly celebrating my wife's birthday. They were OK, but definitely not worth the $12 that they cost for what I believe was an order of 5 that came with 2 sauces, a basic chocolate and one strawberry, each at room temp. Would very much return for Happy Hour food items as well as Taco Tuesday specials. Might want to layer up if it's cold outside. Would pass on the churros. read more

The prime location on the MONON is great in the summer, but winter is a great time to warm up to the menu of bowls, tacos, salads...and delicious and innovative seasonal cocktails. Today we enjoyed the black bean soup (with lots of chorizo and avocado slices) and chicken fajitas. My husband brought home half of his fajitas. We started with jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped and bacon. These grilled little gems are offered on red cabbage and make a delicious starter and or even meal. I tried the smoking Negroni that was on special if you like bitter and you like smoky and you like Negroni, this will be good for you. It's made with Mezcal instead of gin and has a nice smooth finish. My husband got the standard, Margarita that's always a good bet. We made a reservation for Social Cantina on a Saturday night and arrived on time. They seated us on the enclosed outdoor patio, which I thought was odd since we had a reservation. The inside is much more lively. The menu has the typical Mexican favorites, with a pretty good selection of a la cart tacos. I ordered two tacos, the americano (ground beef, romaine, mixed cheese, pico de gallo) and tinga chicken (tinga marinated chicken, guacamole, tomatillo crema, tropical pico). Others at the table also got a mix and match of various tacos. It was ready in about ~15 minutes, but my tacos were room temperature which was really disappointing. The tinga chicken was also pretty spicy, which was my own fault because I didn't know what 'tinga' marinade was, although the menu didn't explain it either. The service was fairly lackluster. I'm anxious to revisit to update my review, but our last visit left much to be desired. We visited on a Monday, and we were offered indoor or outdoor by our friendly hostess. From what I understand there are two outdoor dining patios and inside seating. We were sat on the patio with no other diners, literally alone. The other patio, while it had visitors definitely had the room to accommodate our party or two. We started by ordering the happy hour apps, social nachos and a Tex-mex version of egg rolls. My kiddo ordered a lemonade. Our waiter came back to advise that they were out of one of the appetizers & the lemonade. The appetizer that did arrive had stale chips. My visit may have already been tainted by the earlier disappointment, but nothing that came to our table impressed us much, and the servers didn't seem engaged in any way. We will probably revisit because it is so close to home, but it won't be at the top of my list. read more

I love this location right in downtown Carmel. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather. This is a spot that has a great happy hour, even on a Friday! The happy hour times are 3-6pm. The salsa flight is $10 and a pitcher of margarita $25 both are fantastic deals. We chose the avocado ranch (yes), fire roasted salsa (yes), mango habanero (hot but becomes sweet over time). We came to Social Cantina for the first time last weekend to celebrate my cousin getting married!! We had the best experience by far at this restaurant. The staff kindly let us push back our reservation due to the storm which was so helpful. We ended up arriving late due to finding parking & they still held our table. Service is Ok at best. I ordered 2 carnitas tacos, and rice/beans/queso. It took nearly 1 hr to get the food to me. I understand being busy but 1 hr to make that is insane. Biggest complain is the quality of the food : The carnitas smelled old and felt old when eating. Was very cold. Almost like it was pre cooked and just sitting out and I felt like I was eating refrigerated tacos out of a fridge. There is absolutely no flavor in the food except for the queso which was very basic. Absolutely not coming back. If you want real cantina food, go to an actual Mexican restaurant. Came here for dinner and we were pleasantly surprised! The minute we walked in we were warmly greeted and seated at our table. I quickly took in the ambiance and all of the fun neon lights! I quickly scanned the menu and ordered the chicken tikka taco and the chicken enchiladas. The chicken tikka taco was okay, nothing extraordinary but not necessarily bad either. I do wish the taco had a bit more filling though! On the other hand, the chicken enchiladas were definitely on point. The chicken was so tender and the cilantro lime rice that came with it was so good!! I decided that at the end of the meal I wanted dessert so I ordered the churros. He was really cool, knew the menu well, willing to swap out my friends taco when she didn't like it, clearly loves his job and enjoyed telling us about the restaurant.
