Original review I came here with my parents last weekend and we had a blast. They don't get out much so I figured this place would be a good fit being in downtown Round Rock. We sat at the bar and the bartender was so funny. He and my dad were like best friends by the time we left! We had fajitas and jalapeño poppers, all delicious. Jalapeño poppers are hard to get right, sometimes they're so greasy and gross. These were perfect! Can't wait to go back for more food and great service!! read more

We kept meaning to give this place a try, and it might just be our new favorite Mexican restaurant! We started with a couple of Margaritas, and they did NOT disappoint. We then had the sampler trio...guac, queso, and salsa. The queso was DA BOMB (next time we are for sure trying it with the beef in it), and the salsa had just the right amount of kick. Like that surprise, HELLO!, you weren't expecting after a few seconds. We split the 2 meat fajitas - beef and chicken. Both meats were trimmed up nicely - I didn't have to gnaw my way through the steak. The tortillas were delish too! And the order came with plenty of all the fixins on the side. The service was great too. I was sucking down my water like it was going out of style, and I was never empty or looking around for the server. The music was great - nobody had played anything on the Jukebox, so what happened to play was a great mix. There was a big TV that we could relax and watch sports on too. Service was bad - waited 10 minutes for my first beer and then waited 10 for second and it wasn't that busy and it never came so I just asked for check. Food was average. Ordered chips and salsa ($2.00) and got a little dipping cup of salsa and asked for more - it never came and got charged another $2.00. Ordered Nachos and they were good but not grea I ordered a 22 oz beer and thought it was going to be $4.50 but was charged 7.50. The menu was deceptive. The only redeeming thing was the live music - one guy playing guitar singing and he was really good. I will not be back - to many other places to go. I give this place 6 months. read more

Great food! But get ready to ask for everything you need. Had to wait and ask specifically for napkins, silver ware, water, refills of water, chips, etc. it got a bit labor intensive as a customer but overall they were very sweet and obviously trying and caring! This place needs to upgrade there customer service. I was here Saturday evening with some friends. Walked in, no one employee greeted said hello, no signs direct you to wait or open seating. I was finally yelled at to take a seat anywhere. Well anywhere the tables were they were still dirty. The inside was busy one empty table and outside was busy. So i new that it was going to take a while. Which I was cool with We order food and had a couple drinks. We arrive between 7:30ish and 8pm. Around 9pm we were asked if our food had arrived i said no and would like our food I was hungry. Then I was told that our order was lost and that they were so sorry that happened. I attended a holiday party at Alcove Cantina this past December. The staff and service were great and they have a super selection of beers. It was buffet-style food since it was a party and all Mexican fare however it was very well prepared and tasty. The guacamole was awesome. The Lounge in the back (where the party was) is a cool place to host such events. Really cool setup. read more

Finally a distracted waitress slaps a couple menus on the table And we order a frozen margarita. Not a good margarita at all. Too icy and had a disgusting aftertaste and almost no alcohol at all. Could not even finish it. Then we ordered queso and chips and salsa was completely unremarkable and probably out of a jar. The queso was Some kind of processed cheese is similar to Velveeta and hardened immediately. Couldn't eat that either. And I understand they charge for chips and salsa. Who does that?. I ordered one beef and one cheese enchilada plate and my husband got the. Chicken enchilada plate. The waitress asked if we wanted sauce on it I guess because there are several to choose from. Seems like the question would be what sauce do you want on it? Who gets ench without any sauce. I got the chili sauce and asked for some creamy jalapeño on the side. The creamy was decent Our food came out extremely fast. The presentation was decent but they messed up my order and gave me one chicken and one beef and left off the creamy that I ordered. I told the waitress that was fine but they brought me another plate with the cheese enchilada. Still no silverware or napkins. But eventually they brought them. The chili sauce tasted like it was out of a can. I honestly can get better Mexican food in South Carolina which isn't saying much. Overall a pretty disappointing experience. I thought it had a lot of potential when we walked in because the place itself is kind of cute. But the food is not good and the service is marginal. read more

I was incredibly excited when I saw we were getting a Mexican food place in downtown Round Rock. I love mexican food. Sadly, I probably won't be returning here. We came here for lunch. A group of 5 of us. I got the mix plate with a taco, an enchilada, and a temale. Sadly, nothing had much flavor. Everything was very mediocre. Everyone ordered a mimosa and water, but never received any water. The food was mediocre at best. We ordered both chips and queso and chips and guac and got one basket for 5 people. The tortillas seemed to be heated up in the microwave. The waiter hardly came to check on us or ask for more drinks, even though there was only a couple of other tables. I have been to this place twice now! Upsides: $5 margs, $4 margs on happy hour (all day mondays). Service has been great both times, all of the bartenders are very attentive! Went on a Friday night and there was live music -- a harpist! I have never been so entertained in my life. Who knew a harpist could put on such a show! -- I assume the live music acts probably differ each weekend. Downsides: House marg isn't awful but has a bit of a strange twang to it. And it hardened like that after it sat for awhile. I had a beef fajita taco. The beef was dry, rock hard. Maybe I was mistaken and ordered a beef jerky taco. I had a carnitas taco. It was ok, better than the beef jerky taco The roasted corn was ok. But the corn is definitely frozen or canned. Overall, food is not good. This place used to be a dive bar with crappy hamburgers, so when I first walked in, I was wary about the food. Wow! Was I ever pleasantly surprised! First we started with the chips (which are homemade) and the delicious salsa -mild and fresh. My husband and I both had their combo plates. Mine was a cheese enchilada with red sauce and a pork tamale with jalapeño cream sauce. Both were AMAZING!! I felt like I had been served someone's grandmother's recipes. My husband and I have eaten at the Alcove twice and both times were very pleased. The best taquitos ever! We didn't think their salsa was too spicy at all! We are pretty picky about our Texmex, so for us to give this place a thumbs up is saying a lot. I will agree that they need more servers, however. read more

Never been here to eat but I do go to the back lounge on occasion. There is a great DJ that plays back there. Drinks are good and reasonably priced but I will not page a tab open back there since I had multiple extra things added to it. We came here on a Sunday afternoon and enjoyed their Nachos Grande- $8 and two "$1 off" drafts. The Nachos were really good, especially for only $8! The service was pleasant and the atmosphere was ok- seemed like maybe locals go there on Sundays to hang out. Was in town from Austin on a Monday to see the Express. This place is within walking distance to the transit station and was great. This place is small and cozy with outdoor seating. Queso was spot on. Chimichanga was surprisingly well done too. Even took some home. Monday all day happy hour 4 dollar frozen margaritas. I came here with my parents and son one afternoon for lunch. It was not busy. The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. I had the ground beef tacos and they were great! I was surprised how great the food is here! When you walk in, you find your typical bar/restaurant combo in a very rustic decor that fits the historic Texas building. I usually set my sights pretty low for food at these type of places. But it turned out the food was really great here. Being it was a Monday night, the bartender, Brian, was our waiter. He was super friendly and efficient. I had the beef quesadilla with a side of refried beans for dinner, and the flavor was amazing, very authentic Mexican and all fresh ingredients . My husband had the Margarita Chicken, and the presentation was beautiful. It was a large flavorful chicken breast surrounded by rice and beans. He really enjoyed it. For dessert I got the Tres Leches cake. It was also nicely presented and really tasty and fresh. Can't think of anything I don't like about this place! read more

I can't help but think that the negative reviews on this place are from disgruntled employees or the competition. I have been here quite a few times and have been satisfied each time. The house margaritas are great and reasonably priced. We had shrimp and steak fajitas and they were delicious. Portions are big and prices are nothing to be upset about. Here for open mike night and it's a great atmosphere. We love the outdoor patio. The only reason this is not a 5 star review is because our food runner forgot a few things and had a could care less attitude. That, however, was made up for by our very attentive and friendly male bartender/server. Will definitely continue to come and enjoy this establishment. read more
