Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. Everything is delicious here. The kimbap is a little pricy compared to other places, but you do get a lot. The japchae is good as well. The ddeok bokki is a must, you can add a slice of cheese (it's not real cheese, like American cheese) which is good-not very spicy, but good flavor. They rice cakes are perfectly soft and delicious. They have tons of kimchi and other options that look homemade, the seasoned radish is my go to. They also have some of the Korean drinks (rice drink, banana milk cartons), along with some unique items like slush rice or citron drinks. There are a number of glutinous rice desserts (not too sweet) that are very good. They have raised their prices, but as long as they keep their doors open I'm not too bad about it. read more

Sodam is amazing, I always go here when I am in this area. There are tons of affordable and delicious food here! They have fresh food as well as refrigerated meals, snacks, and drinks for your convenience. I usually get fishcake gimbap and I dip it in their tteokbokki. Their gimbal is always crunchy and the tteokbokki is hot and has super soft ricecakes. There is usually parking available. Lines move quickly and your food is ready quick! My go-to Korean market! This place is amazing. With a great selection and great quality, it has earned itself 5 stars in my book. They offer in house meals as well as Korean grocery items and freshly made snacks. So. Good. My trusty picks include Beef Kimbap and Kimchi pancakes (both of which can be made fresh to order!) The people working here are always super friendly and the taste of their products is always consistent. I believe the pricing here is average amongst other Korean markets but this one has an undeniable charm that lacks in other spaces. The vibe in here is good and it feels authentic. I feel right at home. I would totally recommend this place to anyone! Give something new a try and you'll reap the rewards. They also have yummy frozen treats. Really, 5* reviews? This is no destination dining. It's okay for K SNACKS if you're in the area. Dokbokki is on the bland side and a tad undercooked. Other baked/steamed goodies are okay (some might not be made on premises). Kimbap was okay. Many items might be made to order so it usually takes a while to get my order. They also carry a low inventory which keeps things fresh, but they often run out of food. The dude that works there seems nice. $5-10 will fill your belly. Another example of mediocre ethnic food in the Tri-valley area. read more

My mom ordered a 1st birthday dduk cake for my daughter. The day before her birthday, we called to confirm the order, but the lady had no idea what we were talking about. That kind of freaked us out, so we decided to grab lunch at Sodam and to confirm in person again... like wtf? Anyway, we had dduk and some kimbap, which were OK. Ground beef kimbap is not the norm, and we weren't wild about eating still-hot food that's packaged in Styrofoam and plastic. The next day, we picked up the the 1st birthday dduk cake from the first employee's MIL. It was $40 and looked presentable and was thankfully good. My husband and nanny, who are not Korean, described it as marshmallow sponge cake, which is hilarious but very accurate. I'd love to give more stars to this family-run business, but the customer service was really lacking. On both visits, the employees gave free food to other customers while we were sitting there, after having placed a big order. For coming an hour away to buy dduk? So what? My mom had just flown in from JFK. It was pretty unprofessional and left a sour taste in my mouth, tbh. read more

Firstly I'm not Korean, only interested in different cultures. I was recommended this place as authentic for Korean snacks and side dishes. This place is awesome, has a fantastic spread of stuff that tastes awesome. I am especially a fan of their nabak kimchi (radish water kimchi) and their garlic stems sides. Their burdock root side was also awesome. Not too spicy, well flavored and seemed quite authentic. I've also tried their teokbokki and the pajeon and kimbap... all really good. I am feeling very conflicted to write this updated review. I like this place. It's small, cute, and just adorable. This place offers a simple menu and also sells Korean banchan along with selected items of snacks and rice cake. I like this place whenever I feel homesick. I come here to feed my memory more than feed my stomach because it reminds me of my childhood and my home. I also want to see more places like this (not mega supermarkets) and also see them thriving. The staff is nice too. My problem, only but big, with this place lately is the taste. Not sure how it was in the beginning, lately I don't find their food tasty. Not delicious. Bland. Their food (e.g., spicy rice cakes, blood sausage, gimpop) looks the part, but they have no taste. When I eat their food, I get confused. My eyes say "yes, you are eating Korean food," and my tastebuds say "Am I?" For this reason, I don't come here as much. I think they can do better. This place brings me back memories of when I was a little girl, and my mom used to take me to the Korean Plaza in Oakland on Telegraph, where we would get japchae (noodles), and kimbap (sushi roll). Let me tell you all that the taste hit the spot. Every bite was amazing here, and really brought me back. Japchae was $4 and beef kimbap was $5. They have a $10 minimum use for cards, and plenty of seating to eat in. It's a bakery type style where you grab what you like and pay. They had a variety of items, but I came around 4 and there seemed to be little to nothing left. I wish I would've came earlier because I wanted to try the desserts! Will have to remember to come earlier next time. I see myself coming here often. Great prices, yummy food, and nice staff. I want to buy everything and go for a picnic somewhere. read more

I was craving honey dukk so after seeing the great pics and reviews here, I stopped by when I was in the area. The interior of the shop is cute and calm, with a satisfying selection of goods. I bought a tray of honey dukk ($5) and my mom the hobakseolgi ($5.50). Both were delicious, tasted authentic, and not overly sweet. I would have liked to try the ginger tea, but it appeared to made from the same marmalade (? couldn't think of a better word) that we often have at home in a jar and not fresh ginger. This is a dainty little Korean shop and restaurant (it's super cute and homely). You can buy freshly packaged banchan and a variety of Korean tteok that aren't available in other Asian markets within Pleasanton. * Ggultteok + Songpyuen * I got a package that had a combination of half Ggultteok and Songpyuen because I really wanted to try them both. The Ggultteok is delightful to eat; they are bite size and the rice cake texture is perfectly chewy without being excessive or overly mushy. There is a honey powder syrup filling in the center and it is the perfect contrast with the slightly savory rice cake layer. This was absolutely delicious! The Songpyuen is similar but the rice cake texture is not as bouncy as the Songpyuen (because they use different kinds of rice flour) and the filling is more powdery and less sweet. One package is $5.50. * Baekseolgi-tteok * I really liked this tteok too because its got an overall chewy texture but some parts are slightly crumbly like bread. The kabocha and bean toppings give the tteok additional texture, making it tons of fun to eat. This isn't as sweet as it looks either so you don't have to feel too guilty (like I do after mochi). One package is $5. * Beef Kimbap * I ordered this at the counter and the ladies cut and packaged one up for me on the spot; they are super friendly and nice! One package of beef kimbap costs $5 and it tastes really good - will definitely come and get more when I'm in need for a quick lunch on-the-go. And the second time I came back I got even more goodies to try! * Sirutteok * The texture of this tteok is similar to the Baekseolgi-tteok but it's covered in a crumbly red bean powder. It's not too sweet and it's delightfully chewy. Overall this was good but my boyfriend and I preferred the kabocha-tteok more. * Fishcake Kimbap * For the amount of kimbap you get, I think this is definitely worth the price. But my boyfriend and I liked the beef kimbap more because it's a lot more flavorful (I love fishcake but I gotta say I love meat more). * Spicy Octopus * When we ate this on its own we thought it was too salty so we ate it with the fishcake kimbap and it was much better. I think this would make an excellent side with rice to balance how heavily seasoned the octopus is. I didn't think it was unbearably spicy either. Here's a tip though, the octopus isn't the tiny octopus, and it also comes with onions! * Sikhye * This malt, barley, rice drink is delicious! It comes slightly slushed and it's super refreshing to the palate and stomach. My boyfriend and I didn't find it overbearingly sweet (and we both have a big sweet tooth). And of course, I got even more yum yums for my third visit (I swear I'm not a glutton, I just work really close by). * Fishcake Soup (Odeng Guk) * This was amazing. It's like the chicken noodle soup of Korea. It's the kind of comfort food my body would crave on a cold winter day. Everything is made of fish cakes, from the noodles, the fish balls, and the triangular slices of fish cake. How can one ingredient taste so amazing? The broth is light, gently salted, and the additional pepper and scallion toppings round off all the flavors very well. I highly recommend this if you're looking for some soup! * Tteokbokki * The rice cakes here are made in-house and it's crazy soft (the softest rice cakes I've ever had). The spicy sauce is flavorful and not overbearing. This also comes with triangular pieces of fish cake. If you're craving for something saucy, spicy, and loaded with carbs, definitely get this for your fix. * Plum Juice * This slushie drink is very tart and tastes heavily of plum. It's not as refreshing as the Sikhye but it tastes a lot sweeter. You can also ask for pine nut toppings to up your Instagram game (they don't taste like anything and they don't fit through the straw). Personally, I prefer the Sikhye but this was worth a try. read more

This small Korean market tucked into a strip mall is a hidden gem. It has pre-made kimbap and bulgogi along with an assortment of many other goodies. The little items can really add up, so we ended up with spending $30+ on a few items. Everything is clean and well-organized. All employees I interacted with are very helpful. I absolutely love coming here. It's like a cafe environment that sells actual food. In the summer I love getting the patbingsu (shaved ice with red bean). I ask for it without condensed milk to have a healthy dessert. It's only available in the summer. I also like buying korean side dishes from here and ordering rice cake. It is a good place for Korean snacks. But recently, their food smells like shampoo. Maybe they don't rinse detergent well? Also they use Styrofoam dishes which is not good for health and environment. Hope they improve it. Food is excellent though.. read more

Being out of the bay area can pose a challenge when looking for good Asian food. Luckily Sodam can provide an excellent Korean cuisine that tastes authentic and delicious. We had the ddoek bboki which was a touch too sweet but still had an excellent level of heat and flavor. We also had all the varieties of gimbap here, i found the meat roll was a bit excessive but hearty and definitely delicious. The ambience of this place hits home as an authentic Korean cafe. The food is reasonably priced and tastes excellent. Theres a very limited menu so they may not have what you are looking for so check the menu photos. Overall an excellent place for young, old and everyone in between. The only thing that would set thia cafe apart is alcohol. Highly recommended. read more
