We went in on a Saturday evening and were immediately seated. We were greeted by our server right away and our drink order was taken. They came out with a jug of ice water and a sample of fermented veggies. The homemade kim chi was amazing. Two of us ordered the Dolset Bimbimbop one with chicken and one with beef. Three of us stopped in for an early lunch on a weekend and the place was pretty empty. Place was clean. You can order online or order with the server so we opted for the second option. Food took awhile but portion sizes were very big that we have leftovers for almost every dish. There was a lot of meat in the yookgae jang but my only complaint is that it had too much garlic. Pieces of minced garlic were floating on the edge of the soup. Even my husband, who loves garlic, agreed there was just a tad too much. We loved everything else. I was really puzzled on how to find the place. There's no building number on the address and the signs point to the back right corner and it's on the back left corner after Loris supermarket. Plenty of parking.. it's a small place in a warehouse like building. My mom is Korean and came with. Got the yukejang. No gosari, no brisket but some mystery beef that was picked out inedible. Came didnt beanspouts... is never made with them. Very little green onion. I could go on and on. It wasn't terrible but it's wasn't what was ordered. Can't say it's regional or everyone cooks their own way.. also got spicy pork. Wow. Neither of us had anything positive to say. Got the hotel clerk and order of thuckpokki and we were embarrassed to give it to him. $10 for a couple bites. We waited 10 minutes after eating despite putting in the order in the beginning. Service was OK. Food came out quickly. Would we come back. Absolutely not. This is a case of Americanized korean food thats lost all the basics that you can't even recognize the dishes anymore. Took my parents here when then visited and they absolutely loved it. Food was delicious as usual and I decided to try something new this time, the dolsot-bibimbap. We all loved it and it tastes so good once you mix everything together. The beef is so tender and I like how the egg cooks more in the clay pot. The service is slower since there's basically only one person clearing the tables, seating individuals and taking your order. The food is worth the wait! Firstly, I love a restaurant that isn't too crowded. I'm sure they have rushes but I came in around 3:30p and it was nice and calm. Not too many people. The food came out fast and super hot. In town from Syracuse. This scratched my itch for Korean food which is desperately missing from syracuse. Saturday evening, table for 2, seated right away. Its a small space, but everyone that came in the door got seated right away. Very fast, polite service. Food was delicious. Little kimchi dishes were great to start with. Worst Korean food I've ever had. (and i eat alot of it) We were a party of 6; four adults and 2 teens. Our reservation was for 3:00pm. We arrived and the place was full but our table was not ready- they had to clean the tables and then push them together. Wiped down and we were seated to a bleach smelling super wet table and 15 minutes after our reservation. One table was wobbly and uneven- I had to stuff a paper napkin under the leg. The banchen was of a sweet potato cubes- not a fan. Kimchee that was underseasoned and too crunchy, the cucumbers were tasty though. The bok choy was plain and blande. All were room temp and should have been cold. Here's a WEIRD thing- they give you TINY little plastic cups for water that is served in REUSED plastic bottles that were used instead of glass carrafs. I believe they were reused dry iced tea mix or something like that. Paper label was on them and falling off from being washed with the paper on. No ice either. Super not classy at all. We ordered four apps- only three came out. The pork potstickers were SOGGY! Theyre supposed to be pan fried. They had almost no flavor and fell apart when picking them up with chop sticks. The fried potato cakes were mostly onion and the onions were chopped HUGE. They were greasy and fell apart when picking them up. The watery soy sauce with vinegar was plain. The edemame was good but hey, can't really screw up edememe. My husband and a teen ordered the beef bulgogi. Worst bulgogi Ive ever seen. Dry, over cooked, too sweet and was made with a TON of WHITE onions! Pretty sure they precook a huge amount far in advance and reheat. Definately not fresh made to order. Dry with no sauce and not a single green onion to be seen. The portion size was very small and a huge portion of rice on a different bowl. For $18.99, it should be fresh, glistening with sauce, seseme seeds and fresh green onions. NOPE! Just dry beef and a TON of white onions. Other teen got Korean wings and a side of rice. The wings were very overcooked and we found a HAIR on one of the wings. Rice was fine. I and another adult ordered Dolsot Bebimbop. Her food came out almost right after the appetizers but no one else got their for 10 minutes. Next was the bulgogi. Another 5 minutes and the Dolsot Bebimbop came out for me. Both Dolsot Bebimbop were totally different. Her egg was undercooked- almost raw. Mine was overdone. She had a HUGE glob of gogujang I had very little. HERE IS WHAT WAS DRASTICALLY WRONG WITH IT. It had NO zuchinni, no shitake mushrooms, no carrots, no bellflower root (not all places use that though). It contained the same bulgogi dry and overcooked meat and a small portion of mung beans. THATS it! Just the beans and meat in the stone bowl. I was stunned at how bad it really was! The final guest ordered Duk Mandu Guk- The dumplings were again overcooked and fell apart when spooned. Pretty sure it was the same dumplings they called dumplings as our app and NOT pan fried. Veggies were over cooked and soft and the broth VERY plain and a TON of it. Im 100% certain those dumplings sit in the broth with the hard and overcooked beef loin in a huge pot all day- hence the dumplings falling apart. They should be cooked seperately from the broth and meat and added right before service. No green onion either- which is a staple of this soup. Each meal came out staggered and weird timing. We were offered a side plate to share of warm sushi- it was pretty good and it was complimentary. Finally- the bill.... they added a mandatory 30% gratuity to our bill because "we were a large party". This was not disclosed anywhere; not on the wall, not on the menu and not on the website. We would have tipped 20% at best. Nope- it was automatically added to the bill without any disclosure or option and learned of this upon getting the bill. This made our bill a WHOPPING $79.00! We had one bulgogi, one Dolsot Bebimbop and three hotwings and two apps and just water..... Thats CRAZY high! Service staff were very nice but there's just one; a server and a hostess who also delivers food and seats guests. Service was super slow and very irregular. Final comment- the rug in front of the entrance was worn but worse, curled up and I tripped! It's a literally hazard and should be replaced. I generally don't write reviews this scathing but this place is a HARD pass. If you want authentic Korean fare- GO SOMEPLACE ELSE! I'm at a total loss of the positive reviews. My only guess is these positive reviews come from people who really don't now what good quality Korean food is. read more

Updating my review. Still 3.5 stars but towards the 4 end (as compared to other places in Rochester specifically, not against other Korean restaurants in general). Service is now back to normal as we are getting out of COVID (they provide water pitchers) and banchan. Menu is via QR code (no paper menus). Again, because this is a small restaurant, it takes awhile for the food to come out and it comes one at a time (a bit awkward if you're in a group). Prices are a bit on the higher end. We got the kalbi, kimchi pancake, kimchi chigae, chicken dolsot bibimbop and jaeyook bokum. The kalbi ($26) was tasty. I like soondobu better than the kimchi chigae so probably would not get that again. It's no big city korean BBQ restaurant unfortunately, but not bad for Rochester. read more

Still five stars, but I'm updating my review to post about their COVID operations. They are open for to-go orders and orders are placed by phone. I called around 4pm on a Tuesday and ordered galbi with kimbap and my order was ready after only 15 minutes. They have the entrance set up so that you ring a bell and they'll come to the window to accept your payment and give you the food. The whole process went very smoothly. The food is still delicious. I hadn't ordered to-go from here before, so I was pleasantly surprised that they still included banchan (the small sides of kimchi, oi kimchi, musaengchae, and miyeok muchim) with the order. My total was $35 after tip, but there was SO MUCH food. 10 pieces of kimbap and enough galbi to feed at least two people. Well worth the price! read more

It took a while to find this place, but once we did we were quickly seated and provided with a bottle of ice water which was appreciated. The menu has some variety to it and we ordered an appetizer which was kind of like sushi but without a wasabi sauce. It was large wrapped in seaweed and had a little sweetness to it. A very nice start to our lunch. I ordered a hot pot which contained fish, squid, tofu and shrimp with their heads. The broth was extremely spicy but so so good. My hot pot was served with a side of rice. I wasn't sure how to eat it but the rice was able to cut the spiciness of the sauce. This was a nice experience in a Korean restaurant. Writing it as someone who's had a lot of korean food in their lifetime. Tucked in the Genessee Valley Market area, this is a Korean restaurant that is an order at the booth and sit down place. Small space, so would recommend calling for reservations especially on weekend evenings because it gets packed. Overall impression was that this place is ok; would recommend Seoul Garden down the street over this place; the food was homely but kind of lacked that last finesse to make it restaurant quality. I would lean towards a 3.5/5. We ordered the panjeon, mandu, mandu soondubu, bulgogi, kimbap for our whole table. Panjeon was ok; good crisp and the batter was done correctly, but I thought compared to their photos with more robust veggies/scallions. So this pancake was a little plain for my liking. Wished they had lived up to their photos better. Mandu was also ok, but their skin was kinda thick. reminded me of almost empanadas rather than the gyoza wrappers I usually associate a Mandu with. Meat filling was otherwise ok. Bulgogi was pretty good; adequate sugar and salt and plenty of onions, so don't get this dish if you're not an onion person. Kimbap was not bad; not the best that I had. It just lacked that brightness that comes with a nicely tight wrapped kimbap. Just felt like a warm loose roll with flavors. Their soondobu was not my favorite. It had a lot of scallions in it in the background. The soup was spicy with the almost radioactive red. Tofu amount was enough and the right kind of tofu was used. Service was busy; order online on your phone with a convenience fee or just at the booth. As a "Yelper", we love a pleasant surprise or two in our dining adventure. I had such a experience recently when I visited Sodam Korean restaurant. I almost didn't make it there because my gps went batty and misdirected me. Upon arrival (after I noticed where my dinner date turned off) I was greeted by a humble but functional dining room. Tip: the cooler near the register is stocked with several Korean sodas. I hope to try the plum soda the next time I visit. There are no covid stained menus here my friend. A QR reader app is needed to pull up the virtual menu. The menu selections are authentic and lack descriptions. Tip: Do a bit of research before hand. Luckily my diner date is cute and knowledgeable of delicious Korean cuisine. We ordered Korean beef, a kimchi tofu dish and potato pancakes. Everything was so delicious we dug in before I could take a gratuitous picture of our food. Everything was delicious and authentic. This place is a 100% recommendation. My husband and I frequent Sodam a lot. We have noticed changes here and there over the years. 1.) The place has expanded, there are two sides now. It was much overdue. The wait doesn't take a long as before. 2.) They now serve sushi! I am not a fan of dragon rolls but the black dragon roll here is so good! It's basically a shrimp tempura roll with eel on top. 3.) No more BYOB, there's a fridge with soju and other alcoholic beverages inside. 4) There used to be 6 different types of banchan, now when I go there's only 4. I miss the tofu and fish cakes. You also have to ask for more banchan if you finish, they will not automatically refill it. 5.) Water comes prefilled in these containers with a couple ice cubes in it. 6.) There are giant pictures on the wall of the items of the menu. 7.) Service isn't as great as it used to be. Yesterday, they forgot our teas after asking for it twice. Finding a waitress takes a bit of time. Dishes I recommend; Black dragon roll, #3 Kim-bob, #7 seafood pancake, #8 spicy potsickers and fishcake, #30 kalbi, #33 spicy pork-bulgogi, and #15 tofu soup. One of my favorite restaurants I have eaten at in a long time! Too bad Sodam is located in Rochester, NY and not South Florida! We were in Rochester for two days and dined here twice. We would have eaten here a third time but they were closed on Sunday! Bottom line....delicious, reasonably priced Korean food that is served quickly. The decor is plain but there is ample seating. The staff is very friendly and on both visits were more than happy to help with selections. There is a Korean menu and a sushi/Japanese menu but we stuck with Korean. I think you can't go wrong if you order from the Barbecue section. Our absolute favorite dish was the Beef Bulgogi: Shredded barbecue beef in a sizzling platter with onions and scallions. It was watering delicious! We enjoyed the Barbecued Squid as well. The Squid was a tad tough but the sauce was wonderful. The Beef Bibimbap was also excellent. I just thought it could have used a little more beef! The Korean Dumplings were like little empanadas and were another winner. Loved this place! Sodam Korean is my favorite Korean restaurant in Rochester. In an unassuming location on the minimally adorned concrete side of a building in Henrietta, what appears to be hardly a business at all turns out to be some seriously delicious cuisine. The community knows - when I visited at around 6pm on a recent Saturday evening, the place was jumping with college students and families, to rival the business of even a Han Noodle on Monroe Avenue. This place serves a really wide variety of very specific dishes. No "Chicken Lo Mein / Beef Lo Mein / Veggie Lo Mein" here (I recognize that those are Chinese so please excuse the ignorance of this comparison), every dish is unique, distinctive and infrequently seen elsewhere on the Rochester dining scene. They serve a wide variety of hot pots, barbecue dishes, soups, noodle dishes, and desserts, as well as a large assortment of sushi and sashimi. All this, in a pleasant family-style environment with a contemporary, 20-something-friendly ambience. My girlfriend and I split an appetizer of the pah-jeon (Korean style crispy rice flour pancake with scallion and vegetables), which was absolutely delicious and tasted like it included potato starch, which was a big plus in our opinion. For our entree, we each had Dolsot-Bibimbob (an assortment of lightly sauteed vegetables, bulgogi, and a fried egg, served with spicy sauce in a hot clay pot), which should be familiar to anyone who's had bibimbap before. This was served very hot, and they were kind enough to exclude egg and substitute the bulgogi (meat) with tofu, at my request. It was delicious, more than filling, and worth every penny. My girlfriend had to take some home because she couldn't finish all of what she had been served, and we had been walking around the mall all day with very little to eat since noon, just to offer a frame of reference. Anyway, this is a wonderful establishment, certainly the best Korean food I know of in Rochester, and I highly recommend it as a great place to eat and a culinary destination for all in the greater Rochester area. It's a challenge to find but worth the search. In my first venture out of the house after an emergency appendectomy (I can't make this stuff up), we chose to try lunch here. It was busy but plenty of seating when we arrived. Service was friendly and prompt. We both opted for soups and entrees off the lunch specials menu. The Seafood Soup was hot and spicy with a generous portions of seafood throughout the cup. My wife opted for the Miso Soup and was not disappointed. The entrees each came with a generous portion of white rice - I brought mine home for someone else in the house to scavenge. I opted for the Beef Bulgogi and my wife opted for the Kalbi.
