I cannot explain how much I love Mauricio. He makes me look and feel so good. I found Mauricio through an influencer friend after my stylist closed his salon during COVID. She also has really long hair and I wanted someone who is able to make long hair look good. Might sound easy but it's hard to not look dull with just straight long black hair. He really listens to my needs and wants and even cuts me fake sideburns and baby hair to make my hair look fuller as my hairline is definitely receding with age ='( I can't imagine going anywhere else and I will follow him wherever he goes! Now if I can only convince him to move closer to me haha! Booking is easy and can be done online or via text. I had used Madison Reed Positano Black box dye on my roots for grays I was starting to get. I was doing this for at least a year or so. The grays were extra noticeable at the roots so I just kept dyeing it thinking I'd have black hair forever. Recently, I changed my mind and wanted a change. I figured since I was dyeing my hair anyway I could switch it up and dye it lighter. I was really worried about changing my hair color because of the uneven dyeing I had done previously and many stylists are afraid of coloring your hair after using black box dye. I had also talked to ChatGPT about it and it warned me. I understood the risks and decided to search for a stylist with good reviews--I was looking for someone who had experiencing lifting thick black Asian hair. Sohea came up and I reached out with some pictures and some inspo. I changed my a few times between ash blonde and mushroom brown, but ended up going with mushroom brown. They had me come in to do a strand test which was really helpful for them to know what they had to do and where the concentration of dye was and then I went in for the full treatment 2 weeks later. It ended up going really well and the color had a lot of dimension. I received in-depth instructions afterwards on how to keep my color lasting longer and also being hydrated and healthy. I've also gotten a lot of compliments about how great it looks so even though I was a little apprehensive about making the change in the beginning, I'm really glad I did it! I saw Mauricio for my first haircut six weeks ago and it was great. Came back on May 9 for a trim. This time he butchered my hair by cutting off all the length (bob or chin length) so that the hair is shorter all around and doesn't even cover my ears. It's so choppy and I'm unable to do anything to make it better so have worn a hat everyday since. It will take 3-4 months before it's back to something some other hairdresser could style. I complained to the owner, Sohea, who listened and offered to give me a free blow dry but I explained that she couldn't bring my hair back so I declined. She was very nice but I feel angry and miserable since Mauricio slaughtered my hair. I didn't really see how bad it was because my vision is not great so offered a tip and he decline. Now, I realize even he didn't have the hutzpah to take a tip. He think he is unstable and unreliable so take your chance if you must since I know he can give a good haircut if he wants to do so. read more

Much Overdue review, but this is my second time getting hair done by Sohea and I can't recommend her enough. She's the only person I trust with my hair at this point, and always gets the vision down! She makes intuitive recommendations and suggestions and is always attentive of her clients. It can be overwhelming to try and find your "go-to" hair colorist, especially with so many businesses and IGs nowawadays saturating the market, but I would really recommend checking Sohea because she has a wide range of experience from bright pastel colors to ashy brown grays, and can do a variety of services including haircuts. Not only does she use the most highest quality products, she's very knowledgeable on hair care and what product to use. Based on her recommendations and instruction, I was able to maintain my previous hair color after the appointment with her for over a year. I do not mind spending the money here because the quality and service is well worth it! I would park in the garage so you can avoid feeding the meter! Update given the business owner's reply: -"I knew you were a particular client because you mentioned you didn't like your old hairstylist's color" -No, it's because that stylist is in LA (shoutout to Atelier, who I gave a 5 star review on on Google!). I said that it was my fault for not maintaining colored hair, because I'm lazy. Hence why I didn't want to color my hair this time and opted for an easy cut. The reference photo is literally from that same hair stylist. Text convo screenshotted. -"I texted you that it'll be 15 mins late" - To be fair, she did and that isn't the problem, although I was already on my way. The problem is the rushing of the cut itself. Read receipts below - you can check the timing, the haircut was on a Tuesday. -"you didn't give me time to fix your hair" -the hair stylist spent a good five minutes staring at my hair and saying "let me think, let me think" repeatedly. Also offered "come back in two months and I'll fix your hair" - obviously it was way too short for much fixing now. I also started giving feedback after she asked me what I thought and passed me the mirror. It's experiences like this that WILL make one "a particular client" in the future :'). I am leaving these reviews because I wish someone else told me, so I could have tried elsewhere. I originally didn't add the worst photos I shared with friends. They're added now for folks to decide if this was objectively bad. ORIGINAL: DO NOT GO HERE. If only this was a troll review - I really wanted to like my haircut and to find my go-to hairdresser in SF, especially given the stellar reviews here. Debated not posting, but the hair cut was just so bad that I'm posting here so others can learn from my mistake. I asked for a simple hair cut - same instructions as I've given all other hair dressers in the past. "V or U cut, and my hair is flat so add some layers." I even provided a photo of what I had before (my own photo) as guidance - included in photos. What I ended up with is a weird poofy cut where nothing is blended in, random short strands scattered throughout, and a random stick of hair that is extra extra short in the front. This has never happened - worst case is that someone doesn't manage to give my hair enough volume. To be honest, I didn't even know my hair could look like this. It's also so short with random spikes that I can't even do the failsafe solution of just tie it up! The appt started 15 mins late, and I could feel her rushing through the process. Of course, I was hopeful that speed meant skill. No, it meant very very little care was given. And because the first few cut was so short already, there was absolutely no room left to fix. Nothing was blend in and some cuts were weirdly shorter than others, others longer. For what would have been a $150+ quoted haircut. I basically blinked and suddenly everything is a mess. I also grew out my hair for 6 months to get a nicer haircut, give the hairstylist more room to play with. I've gotten and even given myself better haircuts (shoutout to the COVID-era tiktok days). For the first time, I said out loud - "ok, I have to pay you and just leave before I get really upset" and basically ran out of there. The only silver lining is that she didn't charge me, unprompted offer so that was very kind of her - but I suppose that's a reflection of bad it turned out. The goal was a good haircut, not a free haircut. She was very apologetic throughout, but I also spent a lot of time this morning trying to hide the mistakes to no avail. I unfortunately had an unpleasant experience. The stylist was visibly sick and coughed several times on me, including directly toward my hair that she was holding in her hand. I'm feeling a slight tingle in my throat already. She was also rough when handling my hair, pulling strands so hard that it was painful. This is something I've never experienced at other salons. Sohea is a genius. I had box-dyed black hair for maybe 15 years, and everyone told me it would be nearly impossible to go to blonde without growing the whole thing out roots to ends. I was warned that my hair might break off, go orange, etc...all of which is very likely indeed. Global Bleach: I first went to her to get my global bleach roots touch up, which is a difficult service, especially for Asian hair that takes at least 2 rounds of bleach to get to a clean blonde level. I'm so glad that I found Sohea and SoHair Salon, thanks to Yelp! I specifically searched for Asian balayage for unique colors (in my case, purple) on Yelp and voila. Sohea's business immediately stood out with its amazing photos from past clients, who had vibrant, healthy, and gorgeous-looking hair from their sessions. I saw some colors close to what I was looking for and knew this was it. I had an appointment for a haircut + color on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at 9:30am. I arrived promptly and Sohea was ready to go. Pro-tip: park at the Old First Garage for $15 all-day parking! It's a 5-10 minute walk up Polk St. to the salon and you'll pass Bob's Donuts :) Sohea is incredibly responsive, thoughtful, and thorough. From the moment I reached out on IG she immediately asked for pics of my current hair and my hair inspo for cut + color. She gave two color options with approx. price points, one with all-over bleaching and one without. She was realistic in providing pics of what we could likely achieve (dusty lavender rather than silvery lavender) based on my current hair color (which had a bronde balayage and was darker in the back than the front). I really appreciated our communication before I even stepped in the salon. Day of, we talked through everything and Sohea was patient + clear as she explained where my hair was at and what we could do together. This was super helpful for me. Once aligned, we moved forward with a toning session (without bleach). With a wet cut and toning, that finished ~2 hours in. My hair came out mushroom brown with some hints of purple, but purple wasn't quite visible as hoped (maybe 5-10%). After discussing, we decided to go with all-over bleach and Sohea worked quickly to make sure I ended up with a color that I enjoyed. Bleach, toning (second sesh), and completing my hair with a dry cut + curl took another approx. 5 hours. She was efficient and precise throughout. Amazing care and skill. I was at the studio for just over 7 hours from start to finish. My hair turned out great!! The original dusty lavender color was gorgeous. It stayed for a couple weeks (I washed it 2x with blue malva shampoo + conditioner on the ends only) and has settled into a beautiful ashy grey now. I love how it looks :) I love my cut, too! The original total for cut + color (going from dark bronde balayage to all-over purple, except my roots) was $890 pre-tip. She deducted $100 for the first toning session as it hadn't quite turned out as purple as hoped; my receipt came to $790. Sohea was super friendly, warm, and thoughtful throughout the entire process. She gave me matcha mocha from Jina Bakes to snack on during the start of my appointment and bought my salad for lunch, too! She also provided specific recommendations for hair care (hair masks, oils, etc.) and maintenance during our time and after, when I followed up on IG. I got everything and my hair looks healthy and great 4 weeks later. Sohea is such an extremely skilled and talented PRO. I would trust her with my hair or anyone else's, any day. This review has been long overdue since I got my hair done at Sohea's back in January and it was AMAZING!!! I was recommended by a friend and she gave me Sohea's number for a text consultation. She gave me a rundown, price estimate based on what I want to be done, and boom my appointment was made. I found Sohea through instagram as I was looking for a color specialist who has experience with Asian hair. I have lots of hair and I know it can be frustrating to work with, but Sohea was immensely patient throughout and extremely communicative if I had a question. I went in for a consultation and had previously done a balayage with another stylist that wasn't even close to what I had asked for. And because my hair was previously bleached, Sohea knew she had to be careful when color correcting my hair. I'm so glad I found Sohea to dye my dark virgin hair. I have fine to medium, brown/black hair and she was able to transform my virgin locks in one session, while achieving the purple/grey color I was hoping for. All in ONE session. She's a magician. She's also a busy lady running her own business, but very responsive and addresses all your questions and concerns. It's been a little over two months since my session with Sohea and my hair is still healthy and doesn't look or feel damaged from the bleach. The color has also started to fade into a really nice ombré-isque unicorn color (purple, blue, teal, blonde), which I'm very thankful it didn't fade into a heinous color of a mess. After experimenting with various colors over quarantine, I was long overdue for a haircut and wanted my processed hair (basically platinum blonde) to blend better with my regrowth. After a consultation, I decided to trust Sohea's judgement and go with an ash brown color. I hadnt cut nor colored my hair since Feb 2020, more than a year ago. At that time, I had asked my usual hair person to color my hair. Wow Sohea is Amazing! I was in much needed of a change since Covid and was recommended by a good friend who told me about Sohea. I looked her up on Instagram and fell in love with her talent. I reached out to her and gave her a general idea of what wanted and she was very quick and responsive, which was very much appreciated. She gave me estimates on cost and what would be needed to get what I want. When I came in I was super nervous and she totally calmed me down and assured me she would take care of me. She is very talented and knows exactly what process to do to make your hair come out like you want it to. The appointment was very easy to make as well! I messaged on yelp and she asked questions regarding my hair that helped her know what specific products to use on it. I requested a rose gold/ pink balayage and it is the best hair job I have ever recieved! The price was around $450, which is reasonable considering the professionalism you recieve. I highly recommend her and below is why. Before Appointment: Sohea responded quickly on both yelp and instagram with questions about my hair coloring history, photos of my hair and mutual expectations so there won't be any surprises such as pricing, scheduling and, mostly importantly, hair goals. She was very knowledgeable on what was achievable and what was not based on my hair condition and gave great recommendations. Unfortunately I had some schedule conflicts but she was very accommodating and made everything work. Day of Appointment: Sohea did temperature check after I arrived and got me seated with bottled water and snack ready. The studio was clean and Sohea consistently cleaned the area when she had the chance with glove changes. Plus, the whole atmosphere was very relaxing and chill. Throughout the process, she was exceptionally caring, friendly and passionate about her work which took about 6-7 hours for bleaching, toning and haircut. I really enjoyed every bit of it and the little photo session where she took pictures because I wouldn't be able to do so without her. After Appointment: My hair didn't feel dried or damaged at all which was what I really look for in a great hair colorist. She followed up with thorough hair care instructions and recommendations from shampooing to hair mask. I have been to multiple salons with similar hair goals but none of them showed this extent of care for their customers which I really appreciate because this shows how much she cares and stands behind her work. I got my hair bleached for the first time with Sohea and couldn't be happier with the result. Prior to getting my hair done, I was extremely worried that I'd lose a significant amount of hair and even if I don't, it'd turn out yellow. I asked Sohea a lot of questions and she was very patient and addressed all my concerns. When I got to her studio, I felt extremely comfortable. It's cozy and clean. She could tell I was a bit nervous and walked me through everything she was doing. If I remember correctly, our session was 4-5 hours long. We did a double bleach and tone. Given that I had reddish brown tips, she did a silver/purple color on me that I thought was completely magical. She also used really good hair treatment on me so my hair actually felt stronger even after a double bleach. Not only did she help me achieve a color that I love, she also showed me some great products and gave me exceptional hair fair tips. Sohea is ridiculously talented and kind. She patiently listened to all of my input even though I wasn't exactly sure what color I wanted and came through huge. I went in with virgin black hair. The salon is comfortable and she provides water and snacks while you wait for your hair to process. The experience itself was also as great as sitting for 5 hours while your head is caked can be. Sohea is super neat and precise when it comes to actually applying product too, and I'm pretty sure I came out cleaner than when I went in (but also with much better hair of course). She also gives a great men's haircut and is very knowledgeable about Asian hair and styles, much more so than any barber I've ever been to.
