How cool, A 50s style restaurant with New York chic mixed in. At least for breakfast it was pretty awesome! I had the avocado toast with smoked salmon while MommaK had the egg on potato bread sandwich which must've tasted awesome because I could've lost a finger trying to get a bite! The place is attached to the Soho grand hotel and is an upscale diner. Cute decor, 50s vibe, and friendly staff. The food is perfectly serviceable but it's a at a higher price point. I think if you think of this as a diner, it's way too much. If you think of it as a themed restaurant attached to a hotel in soho it's still too much but more understandable. Food came out slow but I think there was an issue because our waiter did apologize. If you have parents visiting from out of town and staying in the area it's a good bet. Looked at reviews before coming here. The staff and service definitely improved. I didn't see an issue with it. We stopped here before heading upstairs to Soho Grand for a drink. The tuna melt was so good! Def different than any tuna melt I've ever had before. It is Seared tuna and it was delicious/ highly recommend. My friend got the spinach goat cheese omelet and that was delicious too. She said they tried the hanger steak last time and it was better than some steak houses she's been too. The rundown: - We started with the shrimp cocktail - typical, but made better because of the harissa cocktail sauce) - Crispy Cheese Curds w/ hot Honey - the waiter raved about this, but I felt it was a bit one note and bland despite the hot honey.. definitely one I would move on from in the future - SoHo Burger - best thing we ate and one of the better burgers I've had in some time... chopped pickles were a nice touch, but the "special sauce" was really just big mac sauce, which tends to be the flavor profile for this kind of sauce no matter where you eat these days - Rigatoni Bolognese - skip this, not worth the carbs... besides if you're looking for pasta, just go up the block to Sola Past Bar - Sauteed Mushroom side - damn good, and a great alternate to some of the fried sides on the menu All in, I'll definitely go back to SoHo Diner, but will be smarter with my order selections read more

Went to the new too-fancy diner, which was really good. But... It's like they're trying to be a 1940s deco diner but it was set up by someone from suburban Connecticut who's never been to a regular New York diner but only to fancy hotel restaurants. (Note that the diner is indeed in a fancy hotel.) For example, the blueberry muffin was stupendous. But they didn't toast it or slice it, just stuck it on a plate. And I also got toast as it was included (no substitutions), which was fine, but they didn't butter it, had no butter on the table, and came by to offer me jam but apparently butter does not exist in their universe. Did I mention the lighting was 100% mercury vapor? Or something. Some very fancy red-lit eggs. It's not that my photos, and everyone else's, are pinkish-orange, that's just how the lighting was. Weird but cozy Eggs were really good. One slice of unbuttered toast. Weird hash browns, as if they were made from mashed potatoes and not grated potatoes, sausage OK but oddly not at all flavorful. So it's not that I didn't like it, because I did. And it's not like it was no good, because it was. But while I liked it I'm not sure I'm going back again if I don't happen to be in the neighborhood. Also, breakfast for one person was $25. Which was OK but for that amount of money I demand stupendous and it was merely pretty good. Oh, almost forgot. My ungrilled blueberry muffin, while indeed stupendously good, had a cornflake topping. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it made it a little odd. Not at all bad, just made things weird. Oh, and the jukebox was excellent. Didn't want to forget that. And the incredibly strong coffee was incredibly hot. Not that either is bad, but just thought I should mention it. Executive Summary: not stupendous given that it was so expensive, but was good regardless. So bottom line is that if you're attending a conference here and your food was billed to your work travel account it'd be totally awesome. Or if you're from Iowa and here on vacation for New Years week, same. But otherwise my assessment of "good but not necessarily up to the price level" is I think right on the way-too-much money.
