After an early 7 AM arrival from Vancouver, our first stop in the Big Apple for breakfast was the legendary La Bonbonniere located in the West Village. This spot had been on my list ever since I recognized it as "The City Spoon" from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (seasons 1 & 2 for fellow fans!). We arrived around 8:45 AM on a Friday morning, and as expected for a classic New York diner, all the tables were full. We snagged seats at the bar, which gave us a front-row view of the incredibly busy staff - taking orders, cooking, and preparing everything with lightning speed. It was exactly the bustling, authentic diner experience I'd hoped for. We fueled up with a hearty vegetarian omelette (packed with veggies, a big win!), along with tea and coffee, and a classic NYC bagel with cream cheese. It was the perfect, satisfying meal to kick off our New York adventure. CASH is only accepted as method of payment.

Casual American fuel. CASH ONLY. No nonsense. These guys push food out quick. It's fun to sit at the counter and watch eggs cracking or the home fries sizzling up to a nice golden brown. The hygiene? Clean enough, but don't expect spotless. It's an old diner. LOVED their pancakes. So soft and fluffy and sweet. Sausages tasted nostalgic. They may be frozen and from a box, but they're good whatever they are using. Husband had corned beef hash and eggs with toast. It was a smaller portion than you would expect, but was the perfect amount of food still. If the line is super long, keep in mind it should move fairly quickly because when you sit down you don't get a chance to really take a deep breath and relax, so turnover is quick. However, if you're starving- go next door to Casa Magazine: get a small coffee and one of their pre-made breakfast burritos. The burritos are quite small (about 10 bites total). My husband and I were starving so we each split one coffee together to stay warm and split the small burrito. A fun little waiting-in-line snack.

Sooooo I would rate this a 3.5. My friend and I got two items only: The omelette with tomato, mozzarella, spinach and onions- this was good but basic- we subbed the feta for mozzarella and felt that was a good decision! Challah French toast- we liked the French toast! Challah is always the best- moist, fluffy and yum! I think I'd need to come back to try more items but for two of us - we didn't feel it was enough food. It was also cash only! Make sure to bring cash! Also, super cozy diner feel with open kitchen/ bar!

I've seen this West Village haunt over the years but never ventured in before. Well, since Jamie W. and I were going on an inadvertent tour of Manhattan's greasy spoons for breakfast, it seemed like a major miss if we didn't try it. After all, a lot of cool local celebrities like Julianne Moore and Molly Shannon apparently get their maximum amount of daily carbs here. It was bustling mostly with hungry thirtysomethings, and we decided to sit in one of the tiny sidewalk tables covered in a wooden frame. The comprehensive menu was meeting their needs. There was a huge selection of breakfasts, sandwiches, and salads, as well as a couple of pages of diner-style hot plates. For some reasoning, I had an unmet hankering for a club. I ordered the $17.25 Chicken Salad Club Sandwich, and it arrived just the way I expected, quartered with bacon, lettuce, and tomato between three slices of white toast. The cole slaw, dill pickle spear, and pile of fries completed the plate (photo: https://yelp.to/4OroAORvpF). It was just what I wanted. Jamie made a more nutritional decision with the $19 Chicken Breast over Greek Salad. The poultry was warm, diced and seasoned with pepper. The lettuce and tomatoes underneath were accompanied by chunks of cucumber and feta along with green peppers and Kalamata olives (photo: https://yelp.to/wB9hCvm-XG). The oil & vinegar came on the side for judicious dousing. The veteran staff of guys was good-humored and quite attentive given our out-of-the-way location. I definitely see why the celebs come here and probably hide at our table. FOOD - 4 stars...diner fare done right AMBIANCE - 4 stars...the semi-chaotic setting fits the West Village well SERVICE - 4.5 stars...funny and attentive crew TOTAL - 4 stars...gee, I wonder what Julianne orders RELATED - Hungry in NYC? Classic breakfast in the West Village. It's a favorite spot of mine to start my weekend morning. It's a no frills type of diner that serves classic breakfast items all day. *It's a CASH ONLY diner* My usual breakfast orders are a cheesy omelette with sausage and french fries or banana pancakes. I've been coming here a lot and always leave happily with a belly full of food. This is a chill and slow pace type of diner from the people eating to the chefs making the food. Overall great place for breakfast in the morning, afternoon, or evening basically any time of the day

    Sausage, pepper, onion sandwich.

This is their $14 sausage, pepper, onion sandwich. This sandwich has a total of 3 burnt pieces of breakfast sausage sliced in half. When I told the waiter that this was ridiculous, he told had his quick retort prepared: "it doesn't say Italian sausage!" I mean, I guess you're right, but why do you want to treat your clientele this way. You literally can't make this shit up.

La B, where do I start...Service, fast efficient, accommodating. Very accommodating. Ambiance, a bit loud inside where there are very few tables. Sit outside would be preferable. Now onto to food. Definitely outstanding diner fare on a expansive menu. I went for breakfast on Sunday at 10:30, sat inside. Now when I go diner breakfast it's usually cheese omelette with buttered rye toast, crispy bacon, and French fries. Having read other reviews raving about the French toast, I went that direction with bacon and sausage. Definitely a good choice. The Challah French Toast, cooked to perfection, the bacon crispy, and the link sausage was just the right amount of greasy. Regular syrup, ok this is a no frills diner that's priced right. Coffee good and hot served in the unique New York blue and white paper cups. Tad expensive but I got a free refill. Lastly, as a throwback to years gone buy, there is a pay phone inside(see picture) Just a point out: cash only

A truly authentic slice of the old NYC, the one you see in all the classic films. A place with soul. A place with good, honest food and friendly service. Thank you to the owners for keeping this place the way it is, long may it stand!

I'd been meaning to visit this place for a while and I'm happy I finally got the chance to do so. We got there before 10.30am on a Sunday and were able to get seated right away on the outdoor shed. By the time we left, there was quite a long line out the door. It's a very casual, no frills, fast meal. The food was solid and service was prompt. I really enjoyed the old-school diner vibes.

Lovely no-frills neighborhood spot in the West Village. Cash only restaurant that is great for brunch. We shared an omelette and the French toast with chocolate chips. Both were very tasty. Coffee is very good as well!

They need more old school diners like this! When I found out this place has been around for years and is a local "safe haven for classic breakfast", I couldn't resist checking it out. The servers are hilarious and kind, the food was tasty and quick. I felt like home away from home and I appreciated the nostalgia. Please please please stop here and then never stop coming back. They deserve our support. Also that's the best lemonade I've had since I left the south. What's the recipe?!

This place always has long queues. Why? The food was awfully average, cash only, tables were dirty... I don't know, I don't get the appeal?

I ordered the Kale Chicken Caesar Salad, which comes with grilled chicken, kale, Caesar dressing, croutons, Parmesan cheese, and a huge piece of buttered bread. I also added grilled steak cooked medium because apparently one protein wasn't enough for me. Both the chicken and steak were flavorful, and the steak was cooked exactly how I wanted it. The salad was filling enough to feel like an actual meal rather than just something light. I also ordered the Strawberry Margarita, which was only $10 thanks to their all day, everyday margarita special. And listen, they are NOT playing with that margarita. It was strong but still tasted really good, which is exactly the balance I want from a cocktail. I ate alone and really liked the seating setup. I had a cute little booth that felt perfect for a solo diner, but it would work just as well for two people. The restaurant also has plenty of seating for larger groups, so it seems like an easy choice whether you're eating alone or coming with friends or family. The servers were attentive to me and assisted me quickly. They also checked in on me multiple times. The interior was another highlight. There's a beautiful wall covered with different pieces of artwork that adds a lot of character to the restaurant and makes the space feel much more visually interesting than your typical diner. Overall, this was a great quick meal while I was out running errands. Good food, a surprisingly strong $10 margarita, and a comfortable atmosphere for dining solo. I'd definitely stop in again when I'm in the area.

Fast forward to 2026 (where I'm finally not broke as hell), the day has finally come, and I am ecstatic about stepping foot into this diner that surprisingly is still standing in 2026. The inside certainly feels like a diner, but not quite the old-school dinginess that I'm used to--it's clean. Given that it was Sunday at noon, it was very crowded in there and mainly flooded with tourist groups, but a table opened up for us pretty quickly. For a NYC diner, the menu is certainly small - this is probably done to keep tables moving faster. I got the Pastrami Hash & Eggs and it was just overdone and super oily and dry--almost as if they just refried everything except the sunnyside egg. Not gonna lie, I was very disappointed, given that I had waited for so long to come here, only to get food that was an attempt to give the staleness another chance by refrying and reheating. I actually beat myself up a little the rest of the day for finishing the whole thing, knowing that the oversaltiness was flirting with opening up some high blood pressure. It was also not moderately priced by any means (was close to $30), but I know I'm helping pay for that Midtown and proximity to Central Park pricing. Not sure if I'll return, which saddens me, but also knowing that they're part of a conglomerate at Fireman Group (and still run independently in a sense) makes total sense

There was no line and I was seated immediately, but it was already packed (which indicates the food is top quality). Egg Cream: This chilled beverage has a beautiful appearance, especially the thick foam at the top. The ratio of seltzer, milk, and chocolate syrup were stirred perfectly. It was highly satisfying and a perfect alternative for a traditional breakfast drink. If you are not desiring the chocolate flavor, this specialty drink is also served in vanilla. I never would have guessed broccoli and melted cheese taste well combined with an egg. A side of hash browns and toast is included. They were the backbone to the breakfast plate. In addition to a great meal, the service was impeccable. After I was seated, multiple servers checked up on me to make sure I wanted a drink. They always passed by and refilled my water glass.
