After a long hike in Mt. Tam, we stopped by the popular Sol Food in Mill Valley for the first time! And I don't know if it was because of the 8-mile hike I just finished or what, but the food absolutely hit the spot! First of all, we came during an off-hour, around 3:30pm, and there was still a line to order at the counter. They provided complementary ice water from a dispenser outside with cups, which was really nice. Once we placed our orders, we stood outside with everyone else as the indoor area is pretty small with only limited counter seating at the window. We waited about 5 minutes to order and another 10-15 for our food. Most people set up camp on the tailgates of their cars in the parking lot, so we did the same. Pro tip: some people brought camping chairs and coolers to make it into a real tailgate, which I thought was really cool. - Pollo al horno: ordered the Large plate which came with generous portion of chicken, white rice, choice of fried garlic plantain or sweet plantain (or one of each), side of beans (choice of black or pink), and a side salad. Chicken was marinated very nicely and wasn't too dry. - Bistec encebollado: ordered the Large plate also which came with the same as above. Steak was cooked well and surprisingly tender enough to cut easily. Both plantains were good but I really liked the garlic one because it was different than the sweet plantains I'm used to. The Large plate portion sizes were huge! Although the price did reflect this, I think it was still worth for the amount of food given. read more

came on a sunday evening around 5pm. it was packed with doordash drivers, to-go customers, and people dining in. service was good: staff was attentive to facilitate pick-up process/ordering for those who walked in and a worker also came to wipe down our table before we sat. i appreciated that they also checked up on our order # and apologized for the wait, though they did forget to include a set of utensils my main point of frustration was the lack of standing room to wait and amount of seating. unfortunately there are only 6 bar-style seats along the window. if we didn't manage to snag a seat we would have had to eat in the car. a majority of the empty space was dedicated to the pick-up and staff standing space. i understand the importance of ample room in a workplace but with how busy this place is, it seems very inefficient and frustrating to have limited seats for customers. the bistec embollado was a 6.5/10 i was afraid of the steak being dry and tough, but was cooked perfectly with the right amount of chew. i loved the caramelized onions, they pair with the steak so well (reminds me of filipino bistek). the plantains were cooked in a form i didn't expect, like a fried pancake. the red vinegar sauce (although a bit spicy for me) was able to cuts through the dense carb-iness. the the black beans are solid, seasoned well. all together the dish did get a bit salty and heavy, especially over time. i would come back to try the other combo plates, probably before the lunch rush or pepared to eat somewhere else read more

I enjoy the Pernil the most along with the plantains and the lemon and garlic sauce with the salad. It was a pleasant surprise recently when for a company party I found out that we picked up a large order from this spot. If you like my reviews, consider "following" my profile for reviews all across the SF Bay Area . Why "follow" someone? I recently tried the San Rafael location and loved it. And when I was in Mill Valley today, I knew I had to stop by! Parking was super easy. I was here at like 11am on a Saturday and the lot was kind of empty when I arrived and started filling up when I left. If you haven't been before, grab a menu before entering, right by the entrance, and order at the counter. This location is small and is more for takeout. There is a little seating area with about 6 seats and a water station located on the outside. They will ask if you need utensils and it'll come with a fork, a knife, napkins, ketchup, and house sauce. I ordered the bistec combo plate. Food came out pretty quick and I ended up taking it the library and eating it there with my friends. I thought the food was delicious. I don't know if it's the way they plate it at the San Rafael location but the portion looks a little bit bigger there. Like they gave me a LOT of onions at that location. This location didn't give as much but it was still delicious. Salad came with a vinaigrette. House sauce was good. Will definitely be stopping by again! read more

I was a little overwhelmed when I saw how busy this place was but the servers and greeters made us feel at home so we stayed and ordered. I'm glad we did because we had a great time. We split a large order of the steak plate among two people and it was perfect. We had fried plantains salty style and double rice no beans. The salad was amazing. I had the tripleta with fries and the sandwich was so good. A good amount of meat and the pink sauce with the lettuce and tomatoes complemented so well. The fries were ok, but probably wouldnt be good reheated. They accidentally gave me salad dressing. The fried plantains were not bad. First don't plan on eating here as there's only 7 barstools and they're first come first serve. We happened to get lucky with our party of five but wouldn't count on that happening again. Haven't been to this place since I visited their San Rafael location 20 years ago so it's essentially a first time haha. We ordered the bistec sandwich, pollo el horno combination, side of black beans, side of pink beans, side of fries and a pollo el horno a la mode (I wanted to try the steak and the chicken). I preferred the black beans to the pink, I like that they use potatoes with their black beans - unexpected surprise, I love potatoes The bistec sandwich was filling and very tasty. It comes with steak, grilled onions, avocado and it's pressed like a panini. Recommend their cilantro lime mayo to use on the sandwich for an amazing experience. The pollo el horno is their other super popular plate. The chicken is really well cooked (slightly under-seasoned to my liking), their rice was good. Their fries were great, actual potatoes freshly cut and fried (again potatoes are my favorite) All in all I would say the flavor and consistency has not wavered much since my visit to their sister location in San Rafael 15/20 years ago. This is a takeout only location with a large parking lot. They do have a few counter seats to eat at if you're able to grab them. My favorite was the bistec sandwich! It comes with a slice of steak (if you get the large it has two slices). I also liked the vinegar sauce for the combination meal along with the black beans. In our last three visits, they've messed up our pickup order every single time. That's not bad luck--that's a pattern of carelessness. We drive over an hour to get to this location, and after yet another frustrating experience, we've likely made our last trip. If you want the real Sol Food experience, skip this spot and head to one of their other locations. To make matters worse, management resisted issuing a refund for an item they failed to include in our order. Hopefully, they'll do the right thing and refund what we paid for but never received. When you're charging $28 for a half chicken meal, the least you can do is double-check the order. read more

I've had the pleasure of having Sol Food in San Rafael last summer, and I've thought about it since. A year later, I'm back in NorCal this time at the Mill Valley location. Food is great a both locations and made quickly. At this location everything is packaged to go and there's no seating area. I can confidently say the only thing that sets both locations apart is customer service. I ordered an ice coffee and at $6.50 you'd think they'd be more compliant with making it the way you want. When asking to please dump some out and add more ice coffee because it was way too milky for my liking it became a whole ordeal the manager had to take over. Still unhappy with my coffee i just accepted it. So, unless you'd like some coffee with your milk I'd suggest getting your fix elsewhere. Food is great. Vibes are off. read more

Teeny Tiny, mostly take-out as there are only 8 seats at a counter. Sadly landlord won't allow then to put any tables or chairs outside. What we did order was really good w/the exception of "just mixed greens" for a salad with another unidentifiable little container of I guess dressing, which was mostly oil. Friend had vegetarian combo, which she loved w/fries - $10.95 I had the Chuletas Fritas - $15.95 thin cut pan fried pork chop, which was delish. I chose the garlic plaintains. Two huge patties, but sadly they weren't hot. All in all a good experience, except for the limited seating. Very reasonably priced. Next time I would go to the restaurant in San Rafael. I've been here several times as well their other site in San Rafael, but this one is very convenient to So Marin. Tons of parking, right near a liquor store and across Miller Ave from Whole Foods. There's also a pet groomer and Sloat Gardens in the same strip-mall. I don't usually have meat, so I rarely come here, but my daughter loves the place, so I went but my pooch was the lucky recipient of the meat! I loved the sweet platanos (plantain/bananas), salad and smooth pink beans, along with rice. I love the vibe of the place and young people flock here, so it was great to share this place w/ my daughter! Not cheap, but fast (use the website/app!!!!) and it will be ready! read more

There was hair in two food boxes. The cook not only is grumpy but not hygienic either. The staff doesn't smile and is rude. It wasn't a good experience just picking up food there. Sadly you can't eat there and if you even eat a fry, there is someone to scold you. I was so hungry by the time we got to a nearby park 2 min away that I ignored the hair. Then ate the shrimp and it was super dry. This was like jerky not shrimp. The plantains were cardboard also. The beans were salty and the rice was soggy. I was told to go here and I was very disappointed. I couldn't finish my meal and had to go back and demand to use the bathroom because I got sick from the food. My body rejected the half eaten meal. We picked up a light lunch here this past Sunday, for takeout since there is no dine-in option available, no seating at all. Service was pretty standard, not the friendliest, but gave appropriate instructions about where and how to order, etc. There was a small line of customers going out the door, but it went by quickly. And the wait for our food wasn't too long either. We got the ensalada con pollo, with juicy and delicious baked chicken and fresh veggies. The lemon dressing didn't have much flavor, kind of just tasted like oil, but it was fine. The small sized salad was more than enough for one person. But I didn't finish cuz the salad was a bit dry, and I wasn't about to drench it in "oil". I did appreciate that they packed the warm chicken separately from the salad greens in our to-go bag. Overall a positive experience, and a good option to have for Puerto Rican cuisine. read more

So I promised I'd try their other food next time I visited... SO I DID :] This time went to the Mill Valley location which was AWESOME. It is take-out only, BUT there is PLENTY of parking, short lines, and it's a very quiet neighborhood. Don't have the hassle of long lines in the middle of the street like their other location I've been to. I wanted to try out new dishes this time, so I chose the Chuletón and Paraiso. Good thing I got the Paraiso, because it sold out later in the day!!! The Chuletón was great, it was very mayo heavy and the porkchop was only lightly seasoned so it was good alone, but great with their vinegar/hot sauce to dip the sandwich in! The Chuletón has pan fried pork chop, sautéed onions, mayo, and Jack cheese on French toasted bread. It was a thin slice of meat, but it was a good ratio to the sandwich itself. The Paraiso was delicious also, it has sweet plantain, pink mayo, jack cheese, thinly sliced steak and sauteed onions on bread, not sure if it was french toasted bread also or not. Also not sure what makes the pink mayo... pink haha. It was tasty, felt like less mayo than the Chuletón. I didn't like it as much as the Chuletón because the plantain was very sweet and I happened to be feeling a savory dish today, not a sweet & savory haha. The small fries was the perfect size to share with 2. The large fries you should have 4~5 to share with. It was real thick potato slices with the skin on, fresh and good. However, I wish it was cooked longer so that it was crispy, it wasn't crispy at all. Next time I might ask for double cooked or something to make it more cooked and crispier! No seating at all, but there were plenty of other people eating in the car like us! read more

I have totally enjoyed the food at the original Sol food in San Rafael. The meal I picked up at the takeout in Mill Valley was mediocre at best. Chicken was dry and did not have any of the distinctive flavoring. The pork ribs were fatty. I normally love their ethnic seasonings, however, both these entrées required to add barbecue sauce to have them have any flavor. Service was fast however fast does not add to the quality. Also, it was $70 including tip for two medium size dinners. It should be rated $$$ not $$. I won't be returning. read more

Sol food for my 50th review!! We stopped here on the way home from a little hike in Tiburon and we all got the same thing. The combination platter with tamales. It came with rice, a salad, pork, tamales, and some dipping sauce. Pork and rice 9/10 Dipping sauce 8/10 Salad with dressing 7/10 Tamales 7/10 (I prefer traditional Mexican tamales) I would absolutely come back here again, and would try a different combination. This was my first time at this location and had only been to San Rafael. I placed an order a day ahead online so that after our Muir Woods visit, I could just pick up the food. Because I was at Muir Woods, I didn't get the voicemail from Sol telling me they were out of a dish I had ordered until later. When I picked up my order, a young man gave me the bag and had I not asked if that was it, he wouldn't have looked to see it was two bags. He also failed to tell me about the dish that wad missing. I didn't get the voicemail until after I left. I was disappointed with this oversight because I was depending on that dish to feed my kid. Otherwise, the food wad packed well for travel and it wasn't totally cold by the time we ate it (10 min after pick up). Everyone loved the ribs (costillas) and the sandwiches. read more

I absolutely love the bistec sandwich. It had the perfect amount of flavor. The steak was very tender and the dipping sauce that came on the side was perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The sweet plantains were also good and the side order gives you a good amount so you could split as a side with someone else.
