I suppose I should like this place better. It's a cute little cafe by the pier, very small. Their menu has classics, lots of American food items that were fine. I got the Cajun swordfish, which had good seasoning but was a bit too salty. My companion chose the fettuccine jambalaya, apparently poorly seasoned. You can also get it with rice instead if a pasta jambalaya is strange. The service was good and staff was very friendly. It's next to Baja Sharkeez but it's quiet and you may not need reservations on a Friday, although it's so small, it would be best to do so. read more

Came in just to try a few appetizers, on a recommendation. We tried the filet mignon meatballs, lobster ravioli, and shrimp. All were great (at least according to my friends). I personally was so fixated on the meatballs that I tried nothing else- delicious. Well, except for dessert- a nice creme brûlée topped with strawberries. We were very happy with our dining experience here . We went on a Wednesday night at 7pm. There was no wait for a table and we were greeted promptly. There was a singer and the live music was a good feature. We had ahi chowder and shrimp scampi to start. Both had the right amount of creaminess and was very tasty . Bf had the meatloaf (he was happy with it) and I had a medium well filet mignon with mushroom gravy. It was excellent. They were prompt with refilling water and serving bread with olive oil. We will definitely return . Parking could be a problem especially on weekends but we rode our bikes and parked it in the meter in front. read more

Had been wanted to go to Sol Grill for several years, and finally got there. It's located right off Newport Pier, but unfortunately located right next to rowdy Baja Sharkeez bar. Attractive little restaurant - lighting is perfect. Waitstaff attentive and friendly. Started with sangrias - got one free with a Yelp checkin. Delicious. And huge. Meatball appetizer with a portabello sauce was the hit of the meal. Fantastic. My wife had mahi mahi piccata. Wasn't expecting a creamy sauce, but she said it was excellent. I had the baseball cut Ahi - was a massive portion. Pretty good, although Cajun seasoning was too strong. Wine list was decent - most everything priced in the 25-40 range. Nice job, Sol. We celebrated my wife birthday with the family. Marissa was a excellent waitress and she showed us the most haves on the menu. She recommended we start off with a cup of Ahi Clam chowder soup and their cup is more lime a bowl. The Ahi Chowder was well made and the chowder automatically hit my taste buds delicious. I ordered the Chapino you can taste the home made flavors right from your first taste. The clams, fish, shrimp was cooked real well and fresh . It's a cute little place, the Ahi tuna was delicious, and so is the salad and bruschetta. The mushrooms were average, lacking in flavor and the mushrooms were the commonly found "white", in a basic broth. I would recommend more of a potpourri of mushrooms and maybe adding some noodles or some flavorful rice as an accompaniment. read more

My wife and I went there on a whim. I have to say we were pleasantly surprised. We made reservations online and got there a little early. We were immediately seated. The food and the service were excellent. I ordered the ciopino, although not your traditional dish, nonetheless it was very tasty. We just had the most delicious dinner tonight at Sol Grill! We had the Ohana family dining room all to ourselves. The appetizer meatballs and garlic bread were so yummy. For dinner the Penne Roma with chicken was excellent and big enough to take half home for tomorrow. The lamb chops and filet mignon were delish and cooked to perfection. The vegetable soup is out of control good, hearty chunks of veges in a minestrone broth. Better than any minestrone I've ever had. My husband ordered his with noodles and chicken and had it for an entree. We loved that they had a kids menu too (our kids had the penne pasta) and the kids dishes included ice cream and sprinkles For adult dessert we had the tiramisu and it was delicious! I randomly walked into this little sliver of heaven on a Monday night. About 12 tables and a bar were my sitting options and the bar was the best spot for me. The waiter was a young fun guy who offered the menu and a local Til about a free sangria on the yelp check in! I ordered the Cesar salad and mahi Piccata. Matais the second chef in the back Had such a great attitude and helped the one server when things got busy. The place is small with the bathroom in the back by the kitchen but the vibes are so awesome it worth a try! read more

If you want a place that is close to the pier (beach, ice cream, bars, restaurants)...this is a great option. The only downside is it's a terrible place to find parking, but that's not their fault. It's a small place with great food, unique decor and live music. From the beginning, we loved the bread to dip in olive oil. I ordered the Chicken Pesto Primavera (sliced chicken breast, sauteed veggies and basil with a creamy pesto sauce) and my husband ordered the Filet Mignon Meatloaf with veggies and mashed potatoes. We both commented on how the food tasted just perfect-No need to add salt or pepper, it was seasoned perfectly. Meals were not super expensive so I would definitely go back. The service was great-I'm pretty sure it was the owner that served us which says a lot about a restaurant. It does get pretty cramped in there because of the size, but it wasn't really a problem. We enjoyed listening to the singer/guitar player in the corner. A funny thing...as we left, I saw two people sitting at an outside table enjoying their meal while wearing rollerblades. Part of me doesn't want to write this review because I consider this to be by a local hideaway restaurant in Newport Beach. The location is ideally situated; it's right across the street from the parking lot just next to the Newport Beach pier. Everything on the menu is excellent. Each time we visit we order mostly the same thing because it's just so good! We start with the Swedish meatballs and two glasses of sangria and then we move on to some type of pasta. My family and I went here for my sister's wedding rehearsal dinner. It's a small and very quaint place. It really gives off an intimate feeling. Between my family and the groom's family, we took up most of the restaurant. I believe there was around 20-25 of us. The food was really good. We started with appetizers and got the cheese bread and mushrooms. The cheese bread was amazingly fresh and flavorful with the cheese stretching from the plate as you pulled a slice to eat. The mushrooms were very flavorful as well. Some of my family are not big fans of mushrooms and even they liked it. I ordered the Newport Linguini and that pasta dish was SO yummy! It definitely had some heat/spice to it (which I'm a little sensitive too), but it would have been "missing something" if the heat wasn't there. The service was great. Even with our large party and other guests coming and going, we still had impeccable service. The waitress was very attentive and quick to refill beverages and cater to our needs. We were there for a few hours visiting and never felt rushed or felt as we were an inconvenience, which says a lot about the service and how well we were enjoying ourselves. The ONLY complaint I have about this place is the location of the restroom. To get to the restroom, you must walk behind the bar and through the "line" where the cooks are making meals. The cooks are super nice and understanding about it and helped me find my way (as I felt I was in the wrong area to find the restroom). Overall, I would definitely go back to this restaurant and I would highly recommend that others try this hidden gem as well! read more

Food was marginal at best. My husband I thought we would get out and have a nice quiet dinner unfortunately was not the case.. The manager/owner had three young boys sitting by us unattended burping and runny around with a football in there hands thinking it was playground. Even doing push ups in the restaurant. Every dish was delicious: Grilled Shrimp appetizer, my rack of lamb (4 double chops, perfectly grilled - I brought half home) and my husband's seared ahi. I often think you can judge a restaurant by its veggies - broccolini, asparagus and spinach were all great. We finished by sharing a brownie which came liberally adorned with ice cream and fruit.
