The Good: The food was delicious. We had the shrimp taquitos as well as the cheese quesadilla and the presentation and mix of flavors were great. We also really enjoyed the chips, salsa and guacamole. +1 star Matt the bartender was super friendly and we really appreciated his quickness in making our drinks and bringing it to our table. +1 star The Bad: Happy Hour is ONLY at the bar. This must be a common theme for Cherry Creek but why punish people with children having to sit in the main dining area by making them pay full price for drinks and tacos? Not cool. Neither + or - a star... just a fact. The Ugly: Our server was extremely subpar. We came in with a large group of 12 who were all hungry and thirsty after a long week at work and our server took at least 10-15 minutes after our drinks were finished to even come back before we could order another. We had to flag him down several times just to put another round in or ask for more chips. One member of our party was so tired of waiting 15 minutes between each beer order he decided he didn't want to wait another 15 to put in a food order and left. We got so tired of waiting we went to the bar to order drinks to bring back to our table... this was much quicker. - 1 star When we pulled out a short game to play the manager immediately told us we couldn't do that as people were waiting for our table and implied it was time for us to go....WTF?!?! We were continuously ordering food and drinks running up a tab and were seriously told that. I've worked in the service industry for many years and have NEVER experienced a restaurant manager telling customers with a $$$ bill to leave. Any new restaurant addition to Cherry Creek is a blessing. We typically leave the neighborhood if we're interested in eating out and with the opening of SOL Cocina we have a reason to stay. The space is beautifully done; the bar is on one side centered the middle of the room with high tables and booths surrounding the exterior that hosts a lively crowd especially during HH. The other side is a mixture of large tables and booths that create a warm and inviting atmosphere for the newly married coupel out on a date night or a large group of friends sharing dishes and enjoying each other's company. I would say the menu is eclectic Mexican. You will not find traditional Mexican cuisine here with mounds of melty cheese. The menu highlights some excellent seafood options from the starters to entrees. Thankfully there is no seafood in the dessert options. For starters I would choose the peel and eat shrimp ($12.50) with garlic, lemon and chili. This is the way to start any evening; fingers peeling large, succulent shrimp dripping with spicy oil all while trying to peel faster than your husband so you can sneak one more shrimp without him noticing that you've had seven to his five (shh). The crab stack ($14.00) is also an excellent choice with a generous portion of crab atop chopped avocado with a light cream sauce. For the more filling dishes, a personal favorite is the Shrimp Chile Relleno ($21.00) which is not filled with cheese which is what one usually expects. This version is a grilled poblano stuffed with well-seasoned rice and baby shrimp with a sprinkling of cojita cheese. The filet and shrimp "El Jefe" taco ($12.50) is also an excellent choice. It's one taco with a premium piece of perfectly cooked filet and large shrimp with melted cheese and sliced avocado. While we're talking about tacos, the Taco Bufalada ($8.75) is a great value and is a combination of juicy chicken, carne asada and carnitas with cheese topped with guacamole. Let's not forget the oh so tasty margaritas. From the house margarita ($8.50) to the Grande margarita ($20.00) that is easily three drinks in one, you will not want for more tequila. The margaritas pack a punch and pair wonderfully with the entire menu. You can also be adventurous and try the blackberry ginger margarita ($11.00). SOL Cocina is the new popular place in the Creek and reservations are needed during any night of the week if you want to sit in the dining room. SOL Cocina is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and I will definitely be back for brunch, lunch and dessert in the very near future. read more

Soooooooooo disappointed. Pre diner drinks at the bar was a joke. Bartender had a major attitude and she wanted to be anywhere but at work. We had to wait for water and it took forever to get a cocktail. The manager was watching my expressions as I politely tried to ask her for some help and did nothing. BRUTAL. Now while our dinner server was much nicer, the food was about a 5 out of 10. And listen, we all know what has happened to prices but come SOL, get it in line. Third time back and we are done. Vibrant place bustling with people, birthday parties, colleagues and awkward first dates. I went with a large group of coworkers for dinner earlier this week. Sol guacamole with goat cheese, pepitas, mango and red onion mixed in was fantastic. House chips and salsa come out with black bean dip as a fun surprise. The salsa is perfectly zippy but not overpoweringly so. Chips are the size of small tortillas, fresh fried and giant. For the food, we had an array of options between the 12 of us. The biggest takeaway from the food was- holy cow this is spicy! We all like spice, but several including me had some burning lips and downed some more water than usual. I had the chili verde and it was phenomenal. But very spicy! That's my signature dish at Mexican restaurants and this was definitely spicier that usual. All in all, I'd go back again- just maybe ask for a side of sour cream just to be safe! read more

I sat down and got a drink just for the kitchen to come out 5 minutes later stating it's "gluten friendly" not gluten free and I could eat nothing on the menu. In spite of negative reviews in a foody group I'm in and few others I wanted to try SOL. First let me say it's super kid friendly and kid central. I did not expect this so was a little turned off. We sat at the bar but still had to tolerate screaming young children. The next thing I noticed was how freezing cold it was inside. All of the windows were open, it was 40 degrees and dark. Everyone had their coats on. Not ideal for dining. People sitting near the windows got up and started closing them. The bartender was not very attentive and had a very dull personality. I'd assume maybe he's shy; if so, not the job for a shy person. The best part of the meal were the chips and salsa of course. I ordered ceviche and while it looked like a large amount of food, I counted 8 small pieces of fish. There must have been 3 large tomatoes and an whole avocado in the dish. That's great when there's actually fish in there. The bartender asked how our meal was and I just shrugged my shoulders and gave an unenthused look; he just walked away. Should have been a tell tale sign that someone wasn't pleased but especially when I left a huge bowl of food with only having eaten the 8 small pieces of fish. Also, the fish was raw and had not been marinated as ceviche is. The other dish was ordered was fish tacos. The corn tortillas were so old they crumbed and couldn't be eaten as a taco but rather had to be eaten with a fork. We would not come back to SOL. read more

Fresh yet unremarkable "naked" guacamole followed by over-priced street tacos. My daughter had carne asada and I had carnitas. The carne asada was overcooked and too salty and the carnitas were bland and dry. How can you have dry and boring carnitas?!? Slow roast pork shoulder should be moist and flavorful. Tough to mess up both taste AND texture. Both tacos came on hand-made corn tortillas that were also over done. The kicker is how much this place really wants you to know that you're paying more. Look at this absurd pricing for the Arnold Palmer! Someone consciously decided to charge a quarter more for an Arnold Palmer! Guess the labor it requires to pour both tea and lemonade into a glass justfies the extra cost. Silly. We came to Sol for brunch mainly for the bottomless mimosas and live music. It was a good atmosphere and we enjoyed ourselves; however, it took forever to get drink refills. The mimosas are in little flute glasses and it took a long time for the server to come around to get a refill. If we had faster service, we would probably come back in the future. Sol recently opened this past summer in Cherry Creek. I finally got an opportunity to try this place, and it did not disappoint! The restaurant is quite large and spacious. The decor inside is rustic and modern at the same time. It wasn't too loud, and I thought it was a great place to get together with friends and family. It would also be perfect for date night. I started out with a Blackberry Ginger Margarita, which had a great balance of sweet and sour. The blackberries were fresh and the ginger gave the drink a nice kick. I personally enjoy salt with my margaritas and thought it added a nice touch to the drink. The restaurant provides complimentary, fresh fried tortillas alongside a tomato salsa and a black bean salsa, both of which were very good. We started out with the coconut calamari.I have never seen calamari served as steaks, but it was probably some of the best deep-fried calamari I've had. It had a great crunch on the outside from the crust and the actual calamari was so soft and moist. The sauce was a zesty, spicy lime sauce that complemented the sweet calamari. I ordered the Short Ribs Barbacoa with a side of quinoa salad. The short ribs were so tender and full of flavor with the chiles and spices they had seasoned it with. It is quite a large portion -- I think I got about 3 large pieces! It came with a side of sweet potatoes, guacamole, red onions, cheese, and 3 warm corn tortillas. The sweet potatoes cut through the richness of the short ribs, and I liked the option of being able to make my own tacos. Sometimes when Americans do fancy Mexican the food loses flavor. SOL Mexican Cocina is like that. Food is decent but I'm a Mexican food snob having grown up 10min from the border, so this place falls short for me. I think the best things here are the salads. They're hefty and with lots of variety and they're flexible in how you customize them. Nice venue and good service. Not a bad place to go but also not somewhere I'm trying to return to quickly. For me the price wasn't worth it. I thought the food was good but not unique or amazing in any way. However, the people that I went with were Denver natives and they did inform me that the prices at SOL were pretty standard for the restaurants in the area. I think it was the only nice mexican place in the area, so if you're really craving mexican with a more "fancy" atmosphere, then I still recommend checking this place out. You sit down and within a few minutes you are brought water in a tequila bottle, seasoned tostadas to be used as chips, and three super unique salsas. If that doesn't set the tone of this place then the super cute décor and open windows letting in the Denver fall breeze definitely will. What I'm saying is, the first impression of this place was absolutely perfect! We came in around 1 and there was no wait. The menu has some crazy options like "cucarachas" and not-so-typical side options (you get two with most entrees) including a surprisingly sweet quinoa salad (yummm) or spicy slaw. We each enjoyed our entrees and left full and happy. Lunch for three of us was under $50, and I considered this a semi-upscale place, so what a deal! I have been here a few times and it has been great. Went this weekend and took a few family members from out of town. Food and drinks were good but service was awful. We had a server that was training someone and I can't see why. 2 people asked for something not to be on their entree and were given attitude about it. When given the bill we put down multiple cards to have the check divided and were called "Karen's" by our server. The trainee then said "you guys do know venmo exists, right". Plenty of other options for food in cherry creek. Don't see a need to go back here to deal with this type of server. Not sure if they perceive it as cute, but it isn't. read more

SOL is good stuff. Their food is baja inspired, so it's a little lighter and a little more flavorful than some of your hole in the wall, classic Mexican food spots. While the menu is kinda on the high end for pricing, I think that's to be expected for the neighborhood that it's located. Nothing in Cherry Creek is cheap. You're not even parking here for free to make it to SOL, so the $14 margaritas and $7 each tacos are high but not surprising. We had a burrito, a torta, and Mexican street corn. All delicious. It took them two tries to get it right, but they didn't flinch on making it right. Service was good for the short handed staff they informed us of at the time that we were seated. I could not stop eating the Guacamole Sol! It's AMAZING! Listen up kids: mashed avocados with lime, salt, serranos, onion and cilantro topped with diced mango, tomatoes, tequila, creamy goat cheese, toasted pepitas & cilantro, served with homemade tostadas!!!!! No, that is not too many exclamation points. Our appetizer was so creative and wonderful that I decided to venture further with an Organic Slim Margarita made with organic tequila (did not know this existed), lime, agave and a splash of soda. Suddenly, I realized I had not had enough goat cheese and opted for the Goat Cheese Enchiladas. (Do we ever get enough goat cheese?) Delicious house made tortillas filled with shredded goat, menonito and jack cheese, under a rich salsa verde with queso fresco, crema and cotixa cheese. Heaven! Everything was freshly made and delicious. Deborah Schneider, of San Diego fame is Executive Chef & Partner of this fabulous new restaurant that is flourishing with a beachy Baja Peninsula vibe. "High-end" Mexican food is always a gamble; is a taco that's not as good as Torchy's worth the added price? Maybe - if you want a nicer atmosphere and some signature cocktails . But still, I found this restaurant to be unimpressive, particularly in a city with some great Mexican food. Personally, I'd rather eat at Machete's down the street. The chips, salsas, guac and tacos there are way better. The corn appetizer, however, was delicious, as was the blondie dessert. Otherwise, bland Spanish rice and black beans - in small portions - accompanied average food. And the silly tostada chips - too big for one serving of salsa or guacamole which forces you to break the chip and have someone else eat part of something you've touched - was off-putting. Our drinks arrived late and were wrong, so had to be reordered. Besides this snafu, service was cordial. I know this is a chain so management has little control over menu items. Go for the atmosphere and perhaps order some of their elevated entrees vs. tacos. Skip the chips, try the corn, have a drink and order dessert.
