I have been coming to Sol Y Luna for years, although it has been quite a while since my last visit. It was so great to be back! I met five other friends for lunch on a recent Friday and the restaurant was packed! I do not think that there has ever been a time that I have been at the restaurant when it wasn't full! When I arrived, tableside guacamole was already being prepared. Since it is always a go-to for me, I was happy that the group had ordered. One of my friends wondered if anyone would be interested in sharing a molcajete, which is my all-time favorite at Sol Y Luna, so needless to say, I didn't even look at a menu. There is a valet lot behind the restaurant. If you are up for walking a block west to Corbin, you can find completely free street parking. Otherwise, there are meters along Ventura Boulevard. Although every table in the restaurant was filled, the service was great and our table was checked on throughout lunch. We had a fun time, and everything was delicious. read more

Driven past Sol y Luna for yearssss and finally decided to check it out on a Sunday afternoon. It's carpeted, dark and electic (& slightly kitschy) with lots of fake plants and things hanging off the ceiling and lighting fixtures. You can tell it's been there for a looooong time without much renovation/remodeling. (How many restaurants still have carpeting??) The starter of chips and salsa were delicious. Chips were still warm and didn't have much salt which I prefer. The salsas were yummy & spicy. Our server was kind and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. The first menu item we got was a 2-item plate of a chicken tamale and chicken enchilada. LOTS of chicken in the tamale and enchilada. Enjoyed the flavors especially paired with the accompanying rice & beans. The second item was the tostada salad and it was a hard pass. You'd get a better tostada salad at El Pollo Loco. It was less than half full. And even that was mostly lettuce. Barely any of the ingredients you actually want. And the shell tasted stale. Aside from the 50% 'yum-rate' on the food, another reason we may not return is the carpeting. We saw several employees sweeping the carpet, smh. Do you know how much dust flies up by sweeping carpet?? And they were doing it right next to customers eating. A few customers looked at the staff with disapproving expressions. I saw one woman put her hand on top of her margarita so the floor's dust wouldn't land into it. **DO NOT SWEEP CARPET WHILE CUSTOMERS ARE EATING!** ***They should get rid of the carpet entirely and replace the flooring with Spanish tile. Much more hygienic and sanitary for a restaurant.*** While glad we finally visited, doubtful we'll return. read more

Lol might be my new fave Mexican restaurant?! First of all this place is very Mexican whimsical. Very cute inside. The menu is quite big so that's nice. I love tamales so I got a combo plate and their tamales was really good!!! I also got a crispy taco and it was also really good!!! We also got a side of plátanos and they also were good. I know this is a valley staple so I'm so happy I finally tried it! I'd def be back! read more

I must update my review for this place, they earned it! I've tried the molcajete and tableside guacamole at other Mexican restaurants and nothing comes close to the taste and quality of sol y Luna! If you're on a diet or eating low carb they offer grilled veggie options instead of rice and cold veggies for dip vs their delicious chips :) Everything on the menu is delish! The margaritas are tasty and strong just don't buy the cheaper version it will taste watered down! Great service and food comes out quick! If you haven't tried it, what are you waiting for? We came here last night to celebrate my wife birthday with her family. We called ahead to make reservations. This restaurant has valet parking for $10 in the back or there street parking, I chose street parking but it was only mad at 1 hour so I used the valet afterwards. We arrived on time and checked in but it still took about fifteen minutes to be seated. It's very compact and feel small inside of this restaurant. Our waitress was Martha and for the most part she was okay. It took three attempts for her to bring me my soda since she kept forgetting. She also forgot to bring me back my refill until I had to ask twice. I had almost the same issue yesterday at another restaurant, my drink was just a soda. I got the shrimp ceviche, chicken wings and my wife got the chicken mole. Her brother got the carne asada burrito. The food was okay but the service was slow with our waitress. What made the occasion special was that they'll sing happy birthday to you and give you a hat to wear so other people will know it's your birthday. read more

I loved everything about this restaurant. (Except parking) We came here for their molcajete. It's my friends favorite thing. And it is now my favorite. It's huge. Sharable for sure. I didn't drink but my friends enjoyed their skinny margaritas very much! Service was a little slow, but they made sure to keep us updated and the whole time. Very attentive. We sat outside. My family and I tried Sol y Luna for the first time today and it will be the last time we ever go. The service was underwhelming and it nearly took 45 min to get our food out. They greet you with "complimentary"chips and salsa only for them to charge you for them in the end. They should be notifying customers instead of sneaking in these added fees. Tried and true and always busy for a reason! Use the waitlist to put yourself "in line" for added convenience. The arroz con pollo and combo platters never disappoint. The restaurant took me back to the old Mexican restaurants of my youth with the large mural, decorative booths, and dark ambiance. I was told that the table side guac was a must, so I ordered that, a chicken tamal, and a side of rice. The tamal came with a side scoop of guac, so I got to taste the difference between the fresh guac and the 3-oz scoop on the menu. The table side was so worth it. When I cut into the tamal, the fresh corn smell really hit me, and the masa was very moist. I somehow ended up with mole on top, and it was a bit too earthy for me. The side rice was cooked perfectly and was a nice addition to my meal. The restaurant got busy very quickly as the lunch crowd arrived, so service felt a little inattentive. I never got a water refill and no one checked in with me between bringing my meal and bringing the check. I don't know if it was that I was sitting alone or if I was just so quiet that they forgot about me, but it would have been nice if they had asked if I needed anything else. Would I return, though? My husband and I had a rare opportunity for a day-date and decided to check out Sol Y Luna in Tarzana. We came in around 3 PM on a Saturday, and to our surprise, the place was packed! Right away, we were greeted with complimentary chips and salsa, which were super fresh and flavorful. We also ordered a small side of guacamole, and it totally hit the spot. I tried the coconut blended margarita and it was a 10/10. The texture was smooth and icy (not watery or chunky like some places), and the coconut flavor was delicious without being overpowering. For our mains, I ordered the coctel de camaron, which was fresh and full of lime & veggies, and my husband had the chile Colorado burrito, which he enjoyed, but felt it was over-salted (which is saying a lot, because he is obsessed with salt). The food overall was tasty, and our server was friendly and attentive. That said, we did notice that our food took much longer to come out compared to other tables around us. It seemed like our order may not have been put in right away, which was a bit of a bummer. Still, the atmosphere was fun; the decor is colorful and festive, and there was upbeat music playing that added to the lively vibe. All in all, it was a great experience, and we'd definitely come back... maybe just not when we're super hungry! read more

Had not been here in years and I remember not being impressed. We met some friends here for dinner who swear by this place! They were right, I was wrong. The drinks and the food were excellent. I got the Chile Verde comes with rice, beans a lil spoon size of guacamole The Chile verde has a classic Mexican taste the meat is very tender and seasoned to perfection, the rice is so good I eat it all and I never really eat rice lol the beans are smothered in cheese and they are so delicious this plate is filling I only ate half. One of my favorite drinks here is the Coconut Margarita smoothie it is so refreshing and delicious you even forget it has alcohol He had the Mole and he ate every single thing on his plate, I ate the mole before and it is also a delicious plate The service is amazing we sit at the bar so ask for Francisco he will take good care of you and is always so friendly, THANK YOU Francisco !! Amy was our server. She was FANTASTIC! There were 12 people in our party and not 1 person had a problem with their order. We all laughed and never felt rushed or overlooked. Really wanted to love this spot but there's others that are more affordable and have more spice and flavor in their sauce. The black beans were watery like soup. Rice was alright. I'm leaving feedback specifically to the encebollado plate (steak, mushrooms and onions), a dish I was really craving for and looking forward to. It's such a comforting straightforward plate when done well but the version I received felt a bit off. The steak tasted more reheated than freshly prepared. The seasoning was bland and lacked overall flavor. The rice flavor made up for the lack of basic salt seasoning. On the other hand, service was warm and welcoming as always. read more

This was my first time coming here, and unfortunately, it didn't start off well. The valet attendant was extremely rude and rushed us as we were getting out of the car even though I had a baby with me. He showed no patience or courtesy, which really set a negative tone before we even walked in!! Once inside, we were greeted and seated in a nice booth. However, the service was underwhelming. It took about 15 minutes just to get our drinks, and even though we flagged down our server several times to let her know we were ready to order, she continued to ignore us. Two other tables that arrived after us were able to place their orders before we even got the chance. When the food finally came, it was disappointing. I ordered a bean and cheese burrito, and it was overwhelmingly cheesy the balance was completely off. Even the water tasted strange, almost like it came straight from a bathroom sink. I have been coming to this restaurant for many years. The past few times I have not been happy. The last time I went with friends and I was taking left over food and guacamole. They usually bring a fresh basket of chips after they make the guacamole. Well they didn't bring the chips so while I was packing my food I asked for some chips. They wanted to charge me for them. I thought that was ridiculous and didn't want to argue with my friends there! Then last night we went with family and ordered the molechete! The steak was so tough and fatty that it couldn't be consumed. I told the waiter but he didn't really say anything. He cleared my plate which was full of fatty steak. I was very disappointed. Carnitas Burrito: drenched in green sauce, succulent carnitas, melted cheese, inside a ginormous flour tortilla. Stuffed in presentation and you will leave stuffed. Guacamole: a whole art form. A cook and master of cuisine art prepares the guacamole before your eyes--it is by far the best guacamole at any Mexican restaurant in all of LA--but ask for the appetizer version, as the side of guacamole is premade overnight (still good, though). The quesadilla: Am I allowed to say my favorite item on the menu is a quesadilla, because it is. Monterrey cheese, with your choice of meat, and a side of guacamole. Melted cheese oozing out from every corner of the large flour tortilla. Divine! Chile Relleno: Panela cheese inside a roasted Poblano green chile, topped with salsa de rajas. Just like my grandma used to make them! The Nachos! Omg. Best appetizer on the whole menu. Freshly-made chips, barbacoa, melted Monterey cheese, guacamole, refried beans, drenched in red salsa--you can order this as your meal--you definitely get your money's worth. Horchata: I am Mexican, so I am very picky about my Horchata, almost elitist--this freshly-made Horchata will transport you to a sunny day in Puebla; you can taste the rice beans infused into this sweet, refreshing drink. A must-order. The ambiance? Festive, from the smiling servers, the tipsy guests relishing in Margaritas and delicious meals, to the wall-art, featuring Mexican greats such as Antonio Aguilar and Frida Kahlo. Giving sol y Luna for Food and service 2 stars. Food was very mediocre and perhaps "lousy" service could be due to an off night (benefit of the doubt). As well we asked for some "mild" salsa, we were charged extra for that...there are lots of other Mexican restaurant options in the valley. read more

Sad to say, this Mexican food place is not for me anymore. First, having to pay for parking feels like an unnecessary extra. The quality of the food has definitely gone downhill compared to my previous visits--flavors seem less vibrant and portions smaller. My only saving grace was the salsa and chips, which were still enjoyable. On top of that, the waitress who tended to us had a noticeably bad attitude, which made the experience even less pleasant. I was also surprised and disappointed that fajitas, a staple I usually expect at a Mexican restaurant, weren't even on the menu. This place is really awesome, it's got great ambience, the decor is very welcoming, with some historic culture references, bars always lively, the waiters always look very dedicated and in line. The food. I mean, wow. I don't think you can find better quality in the valley, including service with a smile! My favorites are the Rajas con Crema app, the Carne Asada Plate, the Mocaljete, Drinks here are guaranteed to get you buzzed on your first choice. Try this place. I would have given 5 stars, as my favorite dish the Burrito de Chile Verde, is normally fantastic. However, what was delivered the other day was terrible. I could literally see how deflated it looked before even starting. Since it's my favorite, I know the size and filling at this point.
