Every time I eat here, I enjoy my time and meal. The hostess was so kind and allowed us to sit in the room we asked for. When we were sat, our wonderful server Ashely greeted us and took our appetizer and drink orders very quickly. The service was an easy 10/10. Now the food, again no doubt, amazing. The portions were great and the flavor is unreal! We got the guacamole, queso, grilled chicken burrito, and Mochaca burrito. All so good and filling. My grilled chicken in the burrito had a perfect, grilled smoky taste accompanied by the fresh pico and avacado. So so good. And the guac is perfect every time. So flavorful and delicious. This was our first time here. A friend, who lives locally, said it was her favorite. We arrived at 5:30 on a Saturday with a group of 6. We had to wait about 20 mins. They don't take reservations! The inside is decorated so fun! Lots of cool Mexican art as well as fresco paintings. It was packed at 5:30! Not a spot at the bar. It's small cozy and quaint while also being fun and festive. We got the table side guac, which was great, as well as two molcajetes for the table. They were the best I've ever had! We got some margaritas, both blended and regular. They had a good skinny marg. The beans and rice are FANTASTIC! (I always rate a Mexican place by their beans. If those are good, you know the rest will be good.) We had a really great time. The servers were extremely efficient. I love the atmosphere. It is smaller than it looks so during busy times I may suggest checking to see if they take reservations. I ordered a chicken taco and it was very full (lots of chicken) the refried beans are good. Salsa was okay. My husband really liked it, the flavor was different, I didn't care for it. Save me from getting filled up . We did get guac made at the table - good. My sister ordered beef tacos but it came shredded and she didn't like them. They won't seat you unless your whole party is there. They have a pretty big menu, but some of the prices are a little steep. I wasn't a big fan of their chips and salsa. The chips kinda tasted stale and greasy. The salsa had no flavor or spice. The chile relleno was delicious as well as the beans. Asked for no rice, since it's just plain white rice with corn. I have been coming to Sol Y Luna for years, although it has been quite a while since my last visit. It was so great to be back! I met five other friends for lunch on a recent Friday and the restaurant was packed! I do not think that there has ever been a time that I have been at the restaurant when it wasn't full! When I arrived, tableside guacamole was already being prepared. Since it is always a go-to for me, I was happy that the group had ordered. One of my friends wondered if anyone would be interested in sharing a molcajete, which is my all-time favorite at Sol Y Luna, so needless to say, I didn't even look at a menu. There is a valet lot behind the restaurant. If you are up for walking a block west to Corbin, you can find completely free street parking. Otherwise, there are meters along Ventura Boulevard. Sometimes I think my friends are super annoying, but then again, if your best friend isn't annoying you once in a while, how good of a friend are they really? It's practically one of my life mottos and definitely belongs in my bag full of clichés. Another one of my favorite sayings is: don't take a Mexican girl to a Mexican restaurant--she'll never be happy. It's not really the restaurant's fault. My mom is just too good of a Mexican cook, so the bar is set ridiculously high.That being said, Sol y Luna does a lot of things right. The salsa here is amazing, and that's one of the biggest ways I judge a Mexican restaurant. If the salsa isn't good, we're already off to a bad start. Thankfully, that's not a problem here.I also love that they prepare the guacamole tableside. It's always fun to watch, and it doesn't get much fresher than that. Over the years, I've also run into quite a few famous people here, which adds a little extra excitement to the experience. Another thing I look for is mole. It's one of the most complicated and time-consuming Mexican recipes to make, and I absolutely judge a restaurant by whether they can pull it off. Today I went with tacos. We ordered the Molcajete Sol y Luna for Two. Unfortunately, the quality of the meat was very disappointing. The steak was extremely chewy and had a lot of tough connective tissue, making it difficult to enjoy. For a dish where the meat is such an important part of the meal, I expected much better quality I do want to give credit where it's due--the customer service was very good, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, good service couldn't make up for the quality of the food. If you're on a diet or eating low carb they offer grilled veggie options instead of rice and cold veggies for dip vs their delicious chips :) Everything on the menu is delish! We came here last night to celebrate my wife birthday with her family. We called ahead to make reservations. This restaurant has valet parking for $10 in the back or there street parking, I chose street parking but it was only mad at 1 hour so I used the valet afterwards. We arrived on time and checked in but it still took about fifteen minutes to be seated. It's very compact and feel small inside of this restaurant. Our waitress was Martha and for the most part she was okay. It took three attempts for her to bring me my soda since she kept forgetting. She also forgot to bring me back my refill until I had to ask twice. I had almost the same issue yesterday at another restaurant, my drink was just a soda. I got the shrimp ceviche, chicken wings and my wife got the chicken mole. Her brother got the carne asada burrito. The food was okay but the service was slow with our waitress. What made the occasion special was that they'll sing happy birthday to you and give you a hat to wear so other people will know it's your birthday. read more

The restaurant took me back to the old Mexican restaurants of my youth with the large mural, decorative booths, and dark ambiance. I was told that the table side guac was a must, so I ordered that, a chicken tamal, and a side of rice. The tamal came with a side scoop of guac, so I got to taste the difference between the fresh guac and the 3-oz scoop on the menu. The table side was so worth it. When I cut into the tamal, the fresh corn smell really hit me, and the masa was very moist. I somehow ended up with mole on top, and it was a bit too earthy for me. The side rice was cooked perfectly and was a nice addition to my meal. The restaurant got busy very quickly as the lunch crowd arrived, so service felt a little inattentive. I never got a water refill and no one checked in with me between bringing my meal and bringing the check. I don't know if it was that I was sitting alone or if I was just so quiet that they forgot about me, but it would have been nice if they had asked if I needed anything else. Would I return, though? My husband and I had a rare opportunity for a day-date and decided to check out Sol Y Luna in Tarzana. We came in around 3 PM on a Saturday, and to our surprise, the place was packed! Right away, we were greeted with complimentary chips and salsa, which were super fresh and flavorful. We also ordered a small side of guacamole, and it totally hit the spot. I tried the coconut blended margarita and it was a 10/10. The texture was smooth and icy (not watery or chunky like some places), and the coconut flavor was delicious without being overpowering. For our mains, I ordered the coctel de camaron, which was fresh and full of lime & veggies, and my husband had the chile Colorado burrito, which he enjoyed, but felt it was over-salted (which is saying a lot, because he is obsessed with salt). The food overall was tasty, and our server was friendly and attentive. That said, we did notice that our food took much longer to come out compared to other tables around us. It seemed like our order may not have been put in right away, which was a bit of a bummer. Still, the atmosphere was fun; the decor is colorful and festive, and there was upbeat music playing that added to the lively vibe. Driven past Sol y Luna for yearssss and finally decided to check it out on a Sunday afternoon. It's carpeted, dark and electic (& slightly kitschy) with lots of fake plants and things hanging off the ceiling and lighting fixtures. You can tell it's been there for a looooong time without much renovation/remodeling. (How many restaurants still have carpeting??) The starter of chips and salsa were delicious. Chips were still warm and didn't have much salt which I prefer. The salsas were yummy & spicy. Our server was kind and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. The first menu item we got was a 2-item plate of a chicken tamale and chicken enchilada. LOTS of chicken in the tamale and enchilada. Enjoyed the flavors especially paired with the accompanying rice & beans. The second item was the tostada salad and it was a hard pass. You'd get a better tostada salad at El Pollo Loco. It was less than half full. And even that was mostly lettuce. Barely any of the ingredients you actually want. And the shell tasted stale. Aside from the 50% 'yum-rate' on the food, another reason we may not return is the carpeting. We saw several employees sweeping the carpet, smh. Do you know how much dust flies up by sweeping carpet?? And they were doing it right next to customers eating. A few customers looked at the staff with disapproving expressions. I saw one woman put her hand on top of her margarita so the floor's dust wouldn't land into it. **DO NOT SWEEP CARPET WHILE CUSTOMERS ARE EATING!** ***They should get rid of the carpet entirely and replace the flooring with Spanish tile. This was my first time coming here, and unfortunately, it didn't start off well. The valet attendant was extremely rude and rushed us as we were getting out of the car even though I had a baby with me. He showed no patience or courtesy, which really set a negative tone before we even walked in!! Once inside, we were greeted and seated in a nice booth. However, the service was underwhelming. It took about 15 minutes just to get our drinks, and even though we flagged down our server several times to let her know we were ready to order, she continued to ignore us. Two other tables that arrived after us were able to place their orders before we even got the chance. When the food finally came, it was disappointing. I ordered a bean and cheese burrito, and it was overwhelmingly cheesy the balance was completely off. Even the water tasted strange, almost like it came straight from a bathroom sink. It was honestly undrinkable. Overall, the service was poor, and the food just wasn't good. I won't be coming back, and I wouldn't recommend this place to others. read more

There was maybe 1/8 of a cup of rice at the bottom. What, is there a shortage on rice? Like rice is expensive... How hard is it to combine both rice and beans. For heaven's sake, I'm sure the tub of rice and beans in the kitchen is side by side. The meat was on the tough side, plenty of it but though. Chips didn't taste very fresh. Great salsa though. Anyways, $19, WAY over priced for lettuce, a small handful of rice and tough meat for a tostada. Not to mention they're not there to please the customer. Won't be back! read more
