I really wanted to love this meal because the service was excellent and the cocktail was outstanding. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, and those two things made the experience enjoyable. Unfortunately, the main course was a major disappointment. The menu described the entrée as "Chicken Under a Brick - Bell & Evans 1/2 bird." When I order a half chicken, I expect to receive half of the bird, including the thigh. Instead, my plate contained a chicken breast, the drumette portion of the wing, and the leg, but no thigh. As someone who prefers dark meat, the thigh was the part I was most looking forward to. I mentioned this to our waitress, who was very pleasant, but before leaving I also asked if I could speak with the manager or the chef to understand why the dish was served this way. Unfortunately, no one came out to speak with me. I was hungry, so I ate what I could rather than sending it back, but it left me disappointed. If the restaurant serves something other than what most people would consider a true half chicken, I think the menu should make that clear. Better communication would have prevented my disappointment. The service and cocktail were excellent, but because the entrée was the main reason for my visit, I left feeling let down. read more

Our cousin suggested we check out this high end restaurant based on other reviews. It's a cute place that used to be a train station. The drinks we ordered were a Sidecar and Creamy Expresso Martini. The bartender knows how to make a nice drink. The waitress mentioned that he's been there since they opened 21 years ago. The food was great. We started with the Tuna Tartare. The tuna is fresh and the presentation was beautiful. The Steak was seasoned nicely and Frites were crispy and both tasted delicious. The duck was cooked perfectly and the beet reduction sauce paired nicely. If you haven't tried this place out I highly recommend doing so. read more

Nice welcoming entrance decorated for fall. There is a nice big bar and some high tops when you walk in and a dining room beyond that area. They had some good looking cocktails on the menu but we went with wine (I'll try the pumpkin martini next time). The duck came with breast, leg and thigh plus pearled couscous and carrots and the short rib was very tender and was served with delicious mashed potatoes and leeks. Dined here for the first time with friends last Saturday. The ambiance is cozy. Old train station. Probably cozier in the winter rather than a nice sunny evening. The service was first class and attentive. The menu is robust. Plenty for everyone. Started with spring rolls for the table. Great dish. Calamari was sampled. The order was huge. The calamari was delicious. My friend tried the filet and loved it. I had a simple salad with salmon. All good. The food is expensive here. That may delay my return. Steaks are 50 dollars plus. My Husband and I checked out Solstice for his 46th birthday dinner. The reviews were great and we had heard about it from other friends. Well ... this experience taught me to stick with what I know, because it was anything but great. We were tucked away near a staircase, seated at a table barely large enough to hold two entrees. While all the other tables had a carafe of water, we did not. It took over an hour to receive our dinner. I ordered the seared tuna. It came with fried rice that looked burnt. I only managed a few bites. The parking - we had to park in a lot adjacent to the restaurant. Because it had been raining, we did not see the huge hole in the road when attempting to park. That was fun. The service was fine. It didn't seem like a busy night, but we still felt forgotten. read more

We brought a couple of friends here last night after talking it up because we have always loved Solstice and have had many great meals there. Last night, I would call our experience "meh" at best. Service was ridiculously slow even when the restaurant was less than half full. The "fried rice" that came with the tuna entree was an overzealous sticky, super-salty mess that seemed like someone dumped a bottle of hoisin sauce over a pile of rice. Both diners in my party left the rice on the plate (the tuna was good, though). My salmon entree was just ok--also overly salty (and I don't usually mind salt), and the salmon overcooked somewhat, with a few tiny gnocchi tossed in the salty sauce. The calamari appetizer, bolognese entree and cocktails were very good, so I am giving three stars for that. Furthermore, this is the third time we have visited in the past few months at 6:00pm or earlier and we are greeted with "Just to let you know, we are out of X." Last night, it was the duck, which my husband was looking forward to. How do you run out of items at 6pm?? Prior to that, it was the special and the halibut. Our server was sweet but not tuned in. Forgot the drink menu even when we asked for one, and when we were almost done with the meal, asked us if we wanted her to light our candle on the table. When the wait was getting long, we asked for some bread and she replied, sure, she could throw some in the oven for us. No one left hungry and the night wasn't catastrophic, but for the pricey menu, we expect better and will be giving Solstice a break in favor of some of the better options in the area for now. read more

Great date night spot. Came in with my husband for my birthday l and had such a great time at Solstice. The food was to die for; the spring rolls were so tasty and I loved my stuffed pork loin. 2 of us had dinner on a Saturday evening around 6pm. The restaurant and bar were pretty full, although a couple of bar seats opened up around 6:30. ATMOSPHERE: Inside has a warm feel. Even with the restaurant full, the sound volume was quite low and we were able to have a conversation without raising our voices. BAR: We ate at a table, but the bar looks like a cool place to hang out if you are able to score a seat. There is a good wine selection, however, if you want a wine by the glass the prices are not on the menu. The server estimates how much you will pay. We got the Chalk Hill and she estimated $14 a glass. When the bill came it was $15. Average pour. I ordered a cosmo, light on everything but the Tito's. Our server nodded as if she understood, but when my cosmo arrived it was bright pink and when I took a sip it had way too much lime juice, so I asked if the bartender could give it another try. The next one arrived a better, but this is not a place I would get one again as it was still too sour for what a cosmo should taste like. When my wine arrived, I took a sip and felt a texture on the glass. When I held the glass up there were lip marks all along the edge. Yuck. In nice places, the bartender holds up each glass before pouring, and removes any water spots, but certainly if there are lip marks, that one should be wiped and put back in the dishwasher. SERVICE: Kalya was pleasant and friendly and although I had sent back two different beverages, she didn't make me feel like a jerk about it. She happily had each replaced. FOOD: The pork bun app is fantastic. Great flavor, the pork was moist and had a slight sweetness to it. The truffle fries were disappointing. They were cooked well and arrived hot, but the flavor was missing. Even the garlic dipping sauce was quite bland. The pork chop entree was quite good and a generous size. They happily substituted in mashed potatoes. The salmon was good, but not melt in your mouth good. Several people have recommended Solstice, but for $185 (which includes tip), I was expecting more amazing, but in reality dinner was just ok. Not likely we will return. read more

All the restaurants in this area are pizza joints, taverns and Italian places people only order chicken parm from. Solstice takes advantage of that by creating a restaurant that looks and acts high end while serving mediocre food. It's a place placing pretend with people who want to play along. And they make you pay a lot to have this role play session. read more

What appeared to be the perfect restaurant, turned into nothing short of a disaster. My husband, 10-month-old son, sister, and I were meeting my cousin and his girlfriend for a pre-Christmas dinner since we were in town visiting. We had made a reservation over the phone earlier that day. We had asked for accommodations for my 10 month old son such as a high chair, and a table away from traffic. They said, "no problem." Upon arrival, parking was easy, and available in the lot outside. Be careful when you enter to not go to the other restaurant that's over by the left. You have to drive in a little bit to find this one. When we got to the restaurant, it was nice, warm, and cozy inside. Beautifully decorated for Christmas. Much larger than we thought and expected. To our surprise, we got a beautiful table in the main dining room. The place was busy, and the environment seemed very fun. We were quickly approached by our server who took our drink orders and brought over bread. We were off to a great start. Our drinks came out quickly, and we put in our orders for appetizers. We were going to pace out our dinner considering we hadn't seen each other in a while and we only needed to be back around 8 PM to put the baby to bed. After our appetizers came out, the weirdest thing happened. What was off to be a great start for a restaurant experience, had turned on us. Our server completely disappeared. It had been 45 minutes, none of us had drinks, our appetizers were finished but the plates were left on the table. Food runners had come by about seven times to bring us baskets of bread and butter, no apologies, no sign of her whatsoever. Finally, one of us had to get up to get her because we had to leave, she came over and apologized. She said to us that it wasn't her best and it wasn't the restaurant's best. My husband and cousin ordered the Bolognese as recommended from the server earlier on. Bolognese is supposed to be braised beef but instead it was hamburger helper and it was so small, the size of a fist. It was also served completely cold. I ordered the salmon, but I never got it. I also ordered a side salad so that's all I ate for dinner. She apologized and gave me my salmon to-go as it was ready right before we were leaving. I never even ate it. This was a disaster. Our server recognized how awful this had been for us and took off all the entrées from our bill so we really only paid for our appetizers and drinks. That part was good and I appreciated the recognition and apology. I know with COVID-19, it's been really hard for restaurants to properly staff their service team, and because of that it has been rough pretty much every time we go out to a restaurant. Also, it's the holidays so we just peacefully left. But it was definitely a huge letdown. read more

I write this email with a lot of sadness. I have been a loyal customer for over 20 years. I have gone for anniversary dinners, birthdays and just for a nice dinner. I always recommend solstice to my friends. Have never had a bad meal. I made a reservation to celebrate my birthday last night. I made these reservations over 3 weeks ago. Then yesterday afternoon I received a text saying I would not be able to sit in dining room but at high top tables at the bar. I told them that was not ok but we went ahead. When we got there the hostess said that was the only spot. She told us we could wait at bar but didn't know when we could be seated. We told her again this was not what we booked but frankly she really didn't care so we decided to leave. I stayed back and told her how disappointed was and then went to tell me she said she remembered me from over 4 years ago. She said I threw the check at her and didn't tip her. I would never do that at all. Even if I had the worse service I still would tip. I know how hard it is to be a waitress as I was one in high school and college. I did come for Mother's Day but we did tip. This situation has made my husband and I so upset. The nice birthday dinner that we were looking forward to for weeks never happened because of this. I wish I could say I will continue to go and recommend you but now I am not sure. It really saddens me over this. You need to check on your staff and not treat people like we were treated. You may not care but I needed to let someone know about this situation. I sent an email on Sunday and still no response to them. read more

Excellent place. I crave the wedge salad with the house made bacon and pickled onions between visits. Steaks are very good. Fries, perfect although I do without the truffle oil - overrated and artificial product (not the restaurant's fault - just something people like but beyond me...). Burger excellent. Super service, fantastic atmosphere, excellent custom cocktail, but not so good food. I've only dined at Solstice once so maybe we caught it on a bad night? The seafood had a strong fishy smell, the sides were overcooked, pale, mushy and bland, and what they tried to pass off as a $30 bowl of Cioppino was insulting. Seriously, Kingston is a coastal town and cheap, old, cooked-to-death seafood won't fly. I hate to write a negative review and I (almost) never do but for the price we paid, Solstice has earned it. Maybe it was an off night? Could a real chef possibly have prepared our dinners? We'll probably give it another try because of the service, atmosphere and cocktails. Hope springs eternal. I ordered the steak, and was the only person in our party that didn't like their meal. While perfectly rare, it was quite over seasoned. My asparagus side was too al dente. My wife loved her seared tuna, my mom had an exceptional Bolognese. My dad had the "chicken under a brick," which was tasty but also quite salty. My daughter had the burger, which was perfectly medium rare. Dessert order: creme brûlée and an order of budino with butterscotch pudding and caramel. Dessert was amazing. read more

They used to have the best burgers in the area, but they've slipped considerably. A couple of nights ago, my family got some burgers from them, ordered medium-well. They were nearly raw. Pink all the way through, with weird raw bits sprinkled throughout. When asked, the staff recommended 'just cooking them some more ourselves,' whatever that means. This place is a threat to public health and should be avoided. read more

Stopped in for drinks and apps this evening and perhaps it's just what we ordered but we will probably not come back. Pluses: Our server was attentive and our Sapphire gimlets were made well with fresh lime juice and simple syrup but unfortunately that's where the compliments end. Ok's: Vegetable spring roll - nice and freshly made with a tasty sesame based dipping sauce. Nothing memorable but was sufficient. Duck wings - crunchy exterior and tender in the inside but reminiscent of chicken wings? I didn't try any but last I remember, duck shouldn't taste like chicken so I'll let you be the judge of that one. Fish tacos - ok at best. It was definitely missing some sort of aioli to bring it altogether. It was dry and bland as is. Ughs: Campeche - please heed my warning and do NOT order this! Unanimous vote that it reminded us of Chef Boyardee mixed with chilled assorted seafood. It was worse than bland. Even salt did very little to liven up this dish. Very unimaginative. All in all, we were a little disappointed and again hoping it was just the combination of items that we ordered and not representative of what this place is as a whole. read more

Not what I thought it would be. I have lived in Kingston for 25 years and have never been to solstice. I wasn't missing anything

Don't go there often, but dropped in last night for dinner. Not impressed. We started out with their oyster special, which was great. Good start. There were 3 of us, and I ordered the pork chop. It was certainly large enough, but way over cooked for my liking. Very dry. My brother in law got the salmon, and said it was pretty good. My wife got the $24, yes, $24 cheeseburger, ordering it medium rare. It came medium well, closer to well. The waitress never came around while we were eating, and my wife was starving and ate the burger. Upon finally returning after we were done, my wife mentioned the burger being over cooked. The waitress wasn't empathetic at all. We were not looking for it to be taken off the tab, as she did eat it. Just wanted something like "I'm sorry, I'll let the chef know ". I will add that the crème brûlée for desert was great. So, we won't be going back soon. Too much $$$$ for too little quality and service. P.S. - we still gave our waitress a good tip. read more

I would like everyone to know how disgustingly sick I became after eating food at this restaurant on Friday night, Sept 16. It is not like me to post anything however after multiple attempts to reach management and owners they have ignored my wife and I. Beware of going to this restaurant, about 3 hours after leaving I was deathly ill and I nearly had to go to the hospital. It is now 3 days later and I still am not fully back to health and have literally lost 10 pounds. My wife is 8 months pregnant and only took one bite off of my plate and even with one bite, she became mildly ill. This restaurant needs to be exposed as they did not even take the time to have a humane response to us as a family after multiple attempts. We called and left a voice message and we also sent an email to no avail. This lack of follow-up by management and ownership show their true colors in the community with their patrons. Our only reason for contacting them was to make them aware of the shift they had working that evening, so they could be reprimanded and another person did not get sick. Like I said - I only post when I feel something is tremendous or very wrong and after spending $200 to celebrate our 4th Wedding Anniversary ... to have what looks like an enitre week of my life ruined by unsanitary conditions ... with no common courtesy from management ... Food, drinks, service, ambience - all fantastic. We went for date night and it was literally perfect. The old brick building is warm and inviting with classy yet modest decor. My filet with herb butter and hash brown side were both INCREDIBLE! No exaggeration, it was the best filet mignon I have ever eaten. My husband had duck, which was equally excellent and presented beautifully. Service was polite and attentive, and somehow also stealthy - items were cleared or refilled quickly and I had everything I needed without feeling interrupted throughout the night. I hate to say it, but dinner at Solstice was kind of a disappointment. The restaurant itself has a great ambience - upscale and well decorated. Unfortunately the food just wasn't all that good. We had the "fork and knife" Caesar - which was basically entire leaves of Romaine lettuce with a tiny bit of dressing and a burned slice of Italian bread on top. Clearly it was meant to be an upscale twist on a traditional Caesar salad, but instead it felt like a pile of lettuce leaves on a plate. For our entrees, we had the seared scallops over risotto. The scallops were well cooked but tiny - not what I would call sea scallops at all. The risotto was bland and grainy. The entire dish was lacking in flavor and texture. Blah. For dessert, we had the chocolate lava cake, which was probably the highlight. It was well made and glazed with chocolate fudge, which I loved. I could've done without the large chocolate cookie on top - again, I think an attempt to be fancy, but it just didn't taste that good. All in all, dinner at Solstice just didn't live up to expectations. Bland food and a menu that tried way too hard. I wouldn't go back. read more
