We had dinner last night, on the suggestion of our brother- and sister-in-law, who live in Woodbridge and have visited the place several times. They recommended it highly. They were right. The ambiance was welcoming, particularly the room away from the bar. Tristan, our host, was friendly and helpful. The drinks and the list of wines were very satisfying. The tapas, just right. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. I had the Segovia suckling pig, as tasty and tender inside and crackling outside as I remember it when I was in Spain. The owner, Ramon Hernandez, visited us and was hospitable and welcoming. Ihe should be proud of his restaurant. In short, we had a terrific dinner. It will not be the only one my wife and I will have when we visit Connecticut again from Boston, which has not overall place about tapas Spanish place combining such many features just like this one to my knowledge. read more

I'm reading the most recent review and I'm wondering where on earth did this guy eat? Last night was my first trip to Solun. I was there with a friend celebrating both of our birthdays. From the moment we walked through the door, or experience was nothing but top notch. We were greeted at the door by the hostess and promptly seated. We were then asked if we'd like to check our jackets. Our waitress, who was a lovely young lady, came to the table to take our drink order. We were very impressed by the diverse menu. We ordered the white sangria (fabulous!) and told our waitress we needed some time to look over the menu. We wound up ordering several different tapas. Each one was better than the next. My favorites were the hanger steak skewers, the brussel sprouts and the fried calamari but EVERYTHING was delicious. We can't wait to go back again! read more

Really love this place. It was our first time here. Our waiter even took the time to explain the menu to us. The drinks were delicious! I haven't had that good of a sangria in a long time. I've been to all the local tapa spots in the new haven area and this one might be my favorite. Highly recommend the mushroom risotto, stuffed artichokes and beet flatbread. I haven't had anything at Solun I didn't like! It also really helps that every time I've eaten here they have "happy hour" deals, including on a Saturday evening (random?!). My bill is always lower here than at other tapas restaurants where 5-6 plates can get pricey. read more

This place was just OK. My husband and I arrived and we were asked if we had reservations, which we didn't and I informed the host of that. HIs response was "well that's OK, we can still seat you" but in a tone that you would talk to a child in when they do something wrong. Meanwhile the only part of the restaurant that had anyone sitting in it that I could see was the bar area and maybe 2-3 tables in the main dining area. Whatever, we wanted to sit outside anyway, which also had only one party sitting out there, the rest of the tables were empty. We ordered our drinks and we ordered 5 tapas plates to be split between 2 of us. We ordered the stuffed artichokes (these were OK), The spicy Calamari (also just OK), The Warm Goat Cheese (Again, nothing special, it was goat cheese in plate that was just barely warm topped with a marinara sauce), The seafood croquettes (These were pretty Good), and the Shrimp Risotto (This one was that best, so good). The Goat Cheese came out with 4 pieces of toasted baguette, which once gone we still had half of the goat cheese left. instead of bringing more bread, they took it away, which was odd to me. The drinks were OK, I got an Irish Manhattan and the Latin Lovers Martinis. They were pretty good. My only real complaint here was that our food arrived before out drinks. For Desert we got the churros and the chocolate croquettes. The Churros were really good, they were fresh and not soggy and came with a chocolate sauce. The Croquettes were covered in almonds that tasted like they had gone stale. All in all, not too bad. The wait staff wasn't the most attentive but they weren't terrible. I have mixed feeling about this place... my 4 star rating is because the service we got was good and I had the best meat and cheese plate(for two) here. I LOVE a good meat and cheese plate and this one was loaded. I think there were 4 different cheeses and 3 different meats, and lots of extras like crackers, toasts, pineapple, grapes, guava paste, olives, fig, cherry tomatoes. For $20 it could have been a whole meal for 2 people and I can't wait to order it again! We ordered a few different tapas to go with it(totally over ordered). The chicken flat bread was good but it literally has an entire piece of chicken on top of it which I found to be a bit much and hard to cut in order to eat(they did not cut it for us). We ordered the grilled artichokes and the artichokes stuffed with lobster which were both VERY salty. The lettuce wrapped tuna was missing the avocado. The friend calamari was great! Loved how there were fried hot peppers that came with it! Me and my friend were a little surprised that they only give you one tiny piece of bread each(although our server was happy to bring us another when we asked). If food was the only service I wouldn't even write this review.....but I want service, atmosphere and a unique experience. What a cool place, the menu offered the world and my worldly Spanish server created the atmosphere to match. The drinks were the freshest I've had outside of high end island resort. The food delicious, each tapas escalated in flavor and appearance. I found myself not wanting to leave this magical place. The owner comes out and talks to you......when and where did that happen to you last? This is how dining used to be and how it should be. Solun is in my neighborhood. Patronizing local businesses is very important to me. I have had several enjoyable Happy Hours at Solun; so much so that I enrolled in their rewards program. I recently received a certificate in the mail that said that I would get double points if I visited Solun outside of the Happy Hour. Today, I decided to take advantage of that, and treat myself to dinner at Solun, after a challenging week. I cannot tell you how incredibly disappointed I am in the experience I had this evening. I went alone. I am female. I was initially ignored by the wait staff. That happens. I am actually OK with that, as annoying and insulting as that can be. This is usually a friendly place, so I decided not to let that bother me. The dining room was not busy, and the bar was VERY noisy, as there was a singer singing. Badly. I mean, really badly. Out of tune, badly. (One should never sing a Sondheim song if they have no sense of pitch) I thought it was Karaoke...it was that bad. OK. No problem. I am here to enjoy myself, so don't be too harsh about the entertainment. I decided on the Pork Chops, but they didn't have any. OK. Moving along to a steak dinner. I asked the waitress if Angus Flat Iron was like a Flank Steak, she told me that the Flat Iron was on the Tapas menu, but when I showed her it was, indeed on the dinner menu, she seemed surprised. I asked again if that was like a Flank Steak, and she told me it was. It isn't. I ordered a glass of wine, and also asked for a glass of water. After a long while, I got both of the drinks, but since there was PLENTY of time to spare, I watched a couple on the other side of the room complaining to each other that they were waiting for over an hour for their food. My dinner came to me in less than 5 minutes. It came with "Parmesan Truffle Fries." and cubed zucchini. The steak was tough, and tasted utterly awful. It was under-seasoned, and had a "glaze" on it that tasted like old gravy. I love steak. Steak should not taste awful. The "Parmesan Truffle Fries" were steak fries that seemed SOAKED in white truffle oil. They were inedible. The notion that if you drown something in truffle oil it will taste great, is completely erroneous. The Zucchini had NO flavor at all. I ate around three bites of the steak, and could not finish even ONE steak fry. When the waitress came over to ask me if I wanted a box to take it home, I told her I really could not eat the meal. She offered NOTHING! She did not offer to bring me something else, she did not give me any option at all. The owner came over and asked me if I would like to fill out a card to say how great everything was, and I told her that the meal was inedible. NOTHING. NOTHING at all. She just walked away. Bear in mind, that this was a $24.95 entree. The waitress gave me the bill, and said, "Let me see if the owner will do something to compensate." She came back and shook her head. I spent 45 bucks on two glasses of house Sauvignon Blanc and ate three bites of steak, two bites of nasty fries and one bite of tasteless zucchini, and she didn't even offer a dessert. OH! And when I finished the glass of water, the glass was removed from my table. I had to ask for another glass of water, in an effort to drown out the taste of the fries. When I got home, I felt the need to brush my teeth, immediately, to get the taste of the worst restaurant meal I have had in years, from my mouth. Like I said, I have enjoyed my times at Solun in the past. I seriously doubt I will ever go in there again, even for the Happy Hour. If the owner is that disinterested in my enjoyment, I really cannot see why I need to do that again. UPDATE: I sent an email to the restaurant, to tell them about my experience. The manager (same woman who I THOUGHT was the owner) accused me of lying. She said I nearly finished my meal. She said I never complained to my waitress, she insisted that my email and this review were in conflict with each other (they are both in writing, so how do you make that mistake?) She said she cancelled my Rewards membership. (I did not ask her to do that) She said I had no right to critique the singer, and basically trashed me because I never wrote a Yelp review saying how nice the place was. I am so disappointed in this place, I cannot tell you. I have spent a lot of money there over the past year. A simple apology would have been the best way to handle this in the first place, and the offer of a dessert, or SOMETHING. The friends I used to go there with are also disappointed. What a let down. The Service was good and the stuffed dates were good but the rest of it wasn't good at all. The stuffed seafood crape I had to send back because it was off. Something was definitely not right about it. My girlfriend could smell that there was something wrong with it from across the table. The waitress was very nice. She took it off said that she told the manager but he or she never stopped by to see if everything was ok. Then we saw a desert that sounded amazing with waffles, coconut, and banana fosters it sounded amazing but when it came out and it was a burnt eggo waffle with bananas that were hard. We dined at Solun this past Friday night and found it to be average. We were promptly seated by the hostess and the waitress was very attentive and helpful. She was familiar with the menu and made recommendations based on what other customers have ordered and enjoyed. We ordered drinks and an appetizer which were delivered quickly to our table. I had a mojito which was perfect; my husband had a beer. The coconut shrimp app was okay, tasted like something you could buy at Restaurant Depot in the freezer section. Definitely not fresh! It took a hour from the time we ordered to the time our entrees came to the table. We did not complain and actually enjoyed the time we had to catch up on conversation. I heard another waitress tell her tables that they were short a chef hence the slow arrival of food. We were not privy to that information. I ordered the skirt steak and my husband had the short ribs. Both were delicious and well-prepared. My steak came with a three potato au gratin which was over baked. My husband's entree came with mashed potatoes that were tasteless. We opted out of dessert which was probably a good choice on our part. The table next to us ordered dessert and appeared to be quite small for the price. Solun is a new establishment that is probably still working out the kinks. We will more than likely go back and are hoping for a better food and dining experience. It's so nice to have another restaurant here in Woodbridge. read more

Ok, being from this area, there's not a heck of a lot of places to go. I've tried giving this place a chance for improvement a few times, hoping the next time it will be better....I'm done waiting. Waiting being the operative word. Sure the tapas are good, but the service is horrible. Their staff is in constant change, which should be the first warning. The manager really doesn't seem to care what goes on with his service staff and here are the examples why: My first experience there with friends we sat at a table in the bar area and it took aprox. 15 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge that we were there, crowd size was minimal at best. After flagging someone down, they sent a waiter over to take our order. We ordered a few different tapas, a cheese sample for $9 the slices of cheese were so tiny it was enough for one taste, artisan bread and a salad. We placed our wine order, selection is good, but we didn't get the drinks served for another 10 minutes which didn't make sense since the bartender wasn't busy filling any orders. We dropped over $120 on Tapas and wine? What?? The second time I arrived was on a Thursday eve at 8pm to meet a friend for a glass of wine, there were only two other couples there at the bar, and the dining room was empty,.While sitting at the bar awaiting her arrival, the female bartender was into cleaning the bar and ignored me, When she did come over I mentioned that i was waiting for a my friend, and ordered a glass of wine. She asked, "Well do you think you're friend is going to want beer, because I'm going to close up the taps. Uhhh it's 8pm? My friend arrived, she ignored her also, she was more preoccupied in closing at 8pm then working. I paid for my wine and told my friend, forget the drink here, lets go someplace else. And so it goes, same stories, different days hoping this time they'll get their act together. But I will NOT be giving them one more penny, especially after the last visit. Saturday night, dining room was busy, bar tables were not. We chose to sit in the bar. The table was dirty, after 15 minutes of no acknowledgement, we got up to get a rag to clean the table, someone finally came over. We placed our drink order, 2 martinis and a margarita, 20 minutes later the drinks were delivered. At this time the bartender was slightly busy so we let it go. When the waiter delivered it he plunked them down and left. After a while we ordered a second round, the restaurant was now empty except for a few tables, 20 minutes later when they were delivered i said to the waiter,"We thought you forgot about us" He abruptly stopped putting the drinks down in mid air and said, "oh, do you want me to just return these then?" He then tried to recover by blaming the bartender by saying, well if i were making these you would have gotten them sooner".... I did a lot of waitress work when i was younger and service like this is unacceptable. No apologies, just threw the bartender under the bus. I said yes, return them and we need out bill. The kicker is, the owner/manager, in a t-shirt, saw the whole thing and didn't even try to approach us. We got the bill, and guess what, yep, the drinks we sent back were on the bill. We called the waiter back over and asked him to please remove them, he did, we paid, we left, and we won't be back. Strike three. they're out. We left and went across the street to Antonio's restaurant, which was busy, and yet they acknowledged us immediately, the waitress was extremely pleasant. Next time you want Tapas, make the drive to go somewhere else. Don't compromise yourself, even if you have a coupon! read more

two words--REHEATED CHICKEN. I'm not kidding. This is exactly what the waiter said when he took our order. At first we thought it was a language thing/miscommunication, but when the grilled meat platter came out with chicken cutlets that 1) looked like plastic fried eggs and 2) tasted like plastic fried eggs, we finally understood that the waiter had not misspoken. I'm not a food snob or critic or even that good of a cook, but I know enough to know that one does not reheat chicken!!! Sadly, the chicken was on par with the rest of the meat on the entire platter. We have been to this restaurant several times, introducing new couples and spreading positive reviews by word of mouth. We went by ourselves the first time for lunch and we were impressed. The second time we brought a group of friends for dinner after raving about it, the service was poor and drinks unbearably strong. When we, after coming up with the courage, asked to have our drinks diluted, the waiter brought the manager over. We explained the situation and the manager immediately became defensive and developed an attitude towards us. Either way, the drinks were diluted and we carried on. Also that night, we had a friend with an allergy, which she of course mentioned first thing...they had to have brought out and taken back her dishes (tapas) several times before getting it right. We left that night semi-disappointed...more embarrassed that we let down our friends. After this event, we decided to give it another try, since the food was pretty good and we had coupon (from groupon). My husband and I had a nice dinner and left happy. We then made another bad decision...invited a different couple to the restaurant. Service was the slowest we had experienced...which we didn't consider a bad thing since we were in good company. We eventually were asked what we wanted for drinks. While looking over out menu, our friend was starving....they had always brought out rolls the previous times. We finally caught the waiter and asked for rolls. When they came, we dug in...I unwrapped my utensils and found food crusted between the fork, I didn't say anything. Our friend cut into his roll and was surprised and grossed out to find a used glucometer strip. With 3 out of the 4 of us being nurses...it was known that a diabetic person must have been testing their blood sugar while making the rolls. ABSOLUTEY DISGUSTING!!!! After debating whether or not to say anything, we told the waiter who got the manager (same manager as before)... he approached...already in defense mode...we again explained our situation and he said they didn't make the rolls at their restaurant and proceeded to say that it was funny. My husband replied that it actually wasn't funny, and the waiter left to "look into it". He never came back or even looked at us through the rest of our dinner. We were not offered anything to make up for this experience, not even a free drink for our hungry friend who could not eat his roll, not even an apology. We paid our bill, tipped the waiter 20%, since it was not his fault...but we will never go back again and we will tell more people about this bad experience than we told of our previous good/ok experience. It is actually closer to 1 star than a 2 star my wife have tried it 3 times the first time we seat at the bar [ Happy Hour ] we sat right in front of the bartender where he mixed all of his drinks that was the only way that we where able to get 2 drinks before closing, that was the first time the second time that we stopped by it was a Friday evening this time we had some dishes here is where is the only saving grace our dishes where very good service poor but food good, the third time we stopped by with some friends disaster not sure what happened we started with the bartender first as our server then he got busy we where handed of to another server we waited and waited we ran out drinks and time our food did show up but it was completely wrong [ I am cutting to the chase] the bill that was a absolute disaster our bill was so screwed up I gave up and just paid it. I avoided this place due to low Yelp ratings. I had to come here for a business dinner a few weeks ago, and I was pleasantly surprised. The whole experience was fantastic. It was a Tuesday night and pretty slow. I started at the bar with a glass of wine while waiting for the rest of my party. The host (owner?) took my coat and checked it for me. The bar was nice with TVs and friendly service. Once we were sat in the dining room (there were about 12 of us), the service was excellent. Our server was Jaime (Jamie?) and he was personable, funny and had a lot of bartender tricks that he was happy to display to us. He told me later he competes in mixologist competitions. He was really one of the best servers I've had in awhile. We ordered lots of tapas plates, both hot and cold, for the table. The kitchen just kept the food coming and there weren't any dishes that I didn't like (although I don't eat beef so I can't speak for those dishes). I thought the tapas were creative and on par with New Haven tapas places like Barcelona or Ibiza. Our drinks were always full and anything we asked for was promptly given to us. Dessert was omgggggg - goat cheese ice cream. It sounds gross but it was the best ice cream I've ever had. Nice little place to have an after work cocktail or to bring your girl on date night. The food is good but portions are small. The drinks are excellent but can be a little pricey for sure. The crowd is a little on the older side but that's Woodbridge for ya'! .. If you are looking for a lively happy hour I would suggest you maybe look somewhere else (Woodbridge social maybe?) but if you want something a little quieter, this place is perfect! We recently had our Daughter's Baby Shower at Solun-it was a completely terrific experience. Carlos and Lori were amazingly flexible in the detail and preparation. The event itself was a huge success. The restaurant took care to prepare the room and did not miss a beat. The wait staff made every effort to focus on each guest and tend to their needs. We headed out excited to try something different. We've not yet done the wine and tapas thing, but we're open minded and I just love vino blanco. Our waiter, Tristan, was surly and offensive. He wasn't interested in serving our table of four. He told us that in order to do a tapas party, each person should order three or four things from the tapas menu and they would bring it out in waves. He said if we didn't order enough we may have to wait up to an hour in between tapas because he was busy with a table of 11 and some other tables. When we arrived, less than half the tables were seated and other waiters were working. Our companions ordered entrees, while my wife and I ordered four different tapas combined. Tristan was upset with our order, telling us firmly that it would not be enough. I ordered the house vino blanco at six dollars per glass, my wife was interested in something sweeter, Tristan made a suggestion that my wife and one of our companions agreed to that was indistinguishable from the house vino blanco except that it was nine dollars per glass. We were each served small bit of bread for our oil. Later in the evening we asked a bread-man as he walked past for more. He generously offered us two more small pieces each and Tristan lectured the man not to give out bread. It was an incredibly inappropriate moment and we sat there looking at each other like we were on a hidden camera show. Our companions ordered steak and scallions with chickpeas. They liked the food. My wife and I ordered chicken and pork tapas, chorizo & wine, and ham croquettes. The first three were good, the ham croquettes arrived late and burned. My wife and I would have been satisfied with three tapas between us. 6-8 seems like too much. We went out for a good time and we had a wonderful time despite Tristan.
