The CD player in my Bose Lifestyle 2 system stopping working. Since Bose does not repair this model anymore, Bose's solution was for me to purchase an entire new Lifestyle system. Bose did offer a discount, but the cost was over $1,500. I took my Lifestyle system to Solutions. They examined my system and said they could repair my system for about $400. Solutions quoted a turnaround time of about two weeks over the holidays. Solutions repaired my Bose system as promised and within the timeframe quoted. We now have music playing throughout our home again. Thank you Solutions. read more

I should have listened to the reviews here and gone elsewhere. first he couldn't find any record of my speaker being there, then after 3 holds, he tells me it's fixed and ready to pick up, and did I remember how much the quote was for? I was never given any quote, so he puts me on hold again, then tells me the analysis shows that the power supply has gone out , would cost $238, and it hadn't been fixed yet! why wasn't I called about this when it was analyzed? "my techs are real busy" I tell him that a new replacement costs $240 almost anywhere, and then the guy starts his bs about speakers aging together and bringing a new one in would be unbalanced, blah blah blah. yeah, the wall is cool because it was on the Elliott Smith album cover, but these people are flaky and they're not getting my business again. read more

Lived in Silverlake almost all of my life and heard by word of mouth about this place. It's actually the home of Elliot smiths wall (for those of u who dont know) so its really special to me because he was one of my favorite musicians. Ignore the ugly graffiti that people sprayed on Solution's beautiful wall because, although it may look dirty and unprofessional, it's inevitable in LA. I think its actually rather neat that their store is so old-fashioned in terms of design. Its a big but small shop so you get the service that you need and want. The employees and owner were really nice to me even though I only brought in a little broken down sony boombox for them to fix. It was only a $20 repair but they treated me like I was giving them huge business. Thats how nice they are. They dont really advertise so thats probably why a lot of people outside LA dont know them but theyre definitely well known here. I loved the service and how my sony sounded so much that i go there anytime I need something repaired. Ive been bringing all of my DJ equipment there for the past years and they never cease to amaze me. WONDERFUL work and good prices. Talk to Stephon because he knows a LOT about music (more than anyone I know). Yes people do complain that he talks too much but those people are just not appreciative of music. Those same people can just say "I have to go, im in a rush" and that solves the problem haha. People make it sound like he always does this but he doesnt so DONT worry honestly. However, this place is notable in that they are a reliable vendor of CrO2 audio cassettes - a relatively rare commodity these days. This place is awesome...i usually go to oc speakers but they messed up my $3000 mixer/scratched the heck out of it. Solutions has been around for like 30 years or more and so has stephon (the main tech) soooo im pretty sure they know what theyre doing. He talks about weird stuff but it does make sense if u really care about music. hes actually a musician too so he knows instruments and does a lot for me in terms of steering me towards the right equipment/best deals. Theyve repaired all of my speakers, amps, 1 electric guitar, and bought some guitar strings there too. They did an amazing job and gave me a great price. I definitely recommend this place. Avoid this place with all your cost. I brought a Mccintosh amp to repair. Yes Mccintosh is high end equipment. The owner knows that. He originally told me that he could fix it with 350$. But in the end he told me It costs 780$ to fix. I was hesitated to pay such a expensive repair fee. I told him to cancel the service. But he refused to do that. Cause he took already time on my amp. 780$ for minor repair service is very high. Also he didn't ask my permission to fix with that high price. Typically a con artist approach. His explanation of the 780$ fee was not clear as well. My amp was fixed but I did't feel good about it. I will never bring my equipment there. The actual name of the business is "Solutions" it says so in front of the store. they do not only repair speakers but amps, turntables.. etc etc etc. Actually most professionals in the Audio business know this place. suprised no one had reviewed with Yelp. I have learned more about high fidelity from Solutions then in any stereo magazine or store.. this place is not retail oriented .. but if your prized audio equipment breaks down.. this place is the place to take to. it will come back better than when you bought it.. I had an entry-level Onkyo receiver that was on the fritz. I wanted to fix it rather than spend money on a new one, but I couldn't afford to pour money into it if I was going to need to buy a new one anyway. Stephen offered to look at it - if he could fix it, he would, but if not, he won't charge me. They did everything they could but alas, it was not their fault that my receiver bit the dust. Don't expect them to call you to update, you'll call them asking you what's going on. Don't expect them to give you any information about what your quote will be, you'll have to ask them and believe me it will surprise you for what they're doing. Don't expect any kind of enthusiasm from these guys, when they think that your job is a lost cause, they won't tell you, they'll just hold onto your equipment for as long as possible. You'll burn a 25 dollar quote fee just from bringing in your equipment for them to do nothing. If you do go here, photograph everything that you're leaving with them, believe me these guys will find a way to lose any lose pieces. read more

I really really really wanted this business to be amazing. They have been a Silverlake staple for as I have been her, 20+ years and I am a huge fan of the small business. But I have had so many components repaired only to have them have the same problem a couple of months later. For example, My stereo amp kept losing a channel, then it would re appear only to disappear again. I took it in and was told that it needed to be rebuilt, $165.00. Ok, but then i'll have basically a new amp right? so I did this only to have the same problem when I got it back. After brining it in again they couldn't find the problem, blew compressed air over it and sent me home. I'm kick myself every time I have to get up ( like every 20 minutes) to wiggle the wires and jostle the thing to get the channel back. They also re-coned my speakers. I'm not really sure how this went because I can't get my amp to work properly, They sound a bit buzzy but it's hard to know with an amp that doesn't work properly. I have always taken my speakers for repairs to this place. Stephon is a genius. He may not be the most social person but he knows his stuff! I recently took him a set of B&W speakers for a tweeter repair that the maid dented when dusting and he not only restored the speaker but he did something I don't fully understand to the wiring and circuitry and the sound stage is beyond amazing. I feel like I just got a new set of speakers and all my old music is like Im hearing it for the first time. Don't go here if you want a cheap fix. This experience was a travesty. They claim to be a a Yamaha service facility, and I need my M7CL-48 repaired. The fact that I called in, and had the guy tell me I should just do it myself, just left a terrible taste in my mouth. I AM TRYING TO GIVE YOU WORK! And just a note to this company, when someone is looking to have something repaired, it probably means they don't have the means to do it themselves, or in this case rather, I don't have the time to spend on it. I thought the owner was nuts when I first went to Solutions. I still think he's nuts, but he's a genius as well... He spouts a lot nonsense ... it took about 20 minutes for me to realize what he was saying was he could mod my speakers for $$. I eventually let him talk me into it and I never looked back. He modified a pair of floorstanders for $85 / speaker and they sounded so good I brought him a pair of bookshelf speakers to mod -- he did those for $85 / pair. Both pairs sound amazing now. I brought my turntable here to be repaired because my arm was stuck!! I emailed for a quote and Stephon (the owner?) got back to me asap with a quote and a solution! Since I'm moving in 2 weeks he promised to get it back to me by the time I moved and he actually got it back to me the following day! When I dropped it off he promised to not only fix what was broken but to improve the sound quality better than what it was purchased at 5 years ago. HE CAME THROUGH on his promise! After going back and forth about paying for repairs or buying a new system I'm so glad I found Solutions! and paid for the repairs. I started going here because of the Elliot smith memorial wall. Didn't even know what the place was until I peeked my head in after photographing the wall. Great place for any audio video repairs! I took my do equipment and parents home audio system there to get fixed and they turned both around relatively quickly (about 4 days). I have been in the Los Angeles Pro Audio business since '95 and I have taken specific repairs to this company for this entire time. While not every job has been perfect they have been good about getting the repairs done in a reasonable time frame for a reasonable price. This is not to say that they are perfect, and rarely I have had to take items back for repair because a problem was not properly isolated, but they have always agreed to take a second look at it until they fixed the problem. They have never screwed me. For the critics of this company I think its important to understand you should hire this company for what they excel at, not necessarily what they say they will do. The are a great place to go for re-coning or re-voicing speakers and handling amplifier and home audio repairs. I would probably not bring in my uber-pricey vintage microphone or compressor because there are better guys in town for that. Ask them if they can handle something before assuming they can do it. I wont get into the eccentricity of one of the tech's there, while he does seem a bit off at first, once you get to know him you'll realize he is very knowledgeable and is a great resource for certain information. This company fits an important niche in this town, if they didn't I would not still be using them 20 years later. read more

I had to sign up with yelp to put in a good word for Solutions! Sure he might talk your ear off... and you might have to listen to a crazy cat lady discuss fixing her crappy computer speakers for 30 minutes before you get to have your own long talk about how chinese the owner's ears are or how brittany spears is seemingly singing out of her bellybutton on an average home system... and if you're not a professional musician or DJ - i could see how this might freak you out. BOTTOM LINE - they fix my stuff. they fix it fast. and they go out of there way to make my life better. synthesizer broke days before European tour --- i was broke... but they let me take apart the thing myself and isolate the problem to save on labor and then only charged me a fraction. someone stole the knobs off a keyboard of mine - he dug around in a bunch of old boxes and found me missed-matched replacements for a few bucks. super rad. they fixed my amp. and they will do crazy upgrades to your gear that no one else would even think of or offer. think outside the box with these guys ... ask them to add an input - permanently connect two pieces of gear and put them in a box so you don't have to do it at every show. etc... and i bet they will have an assortment of creative solutions for you. If you want to get the most out of them - do a little research and know what you are talking about - and what you want. and set aside at least 30 minutes for your visit. read more

I brought in a completely busted record player that I bought off ebay. It was humming like crazy, the turn table turned in spurts, there was some weird screw sticking up... the whole thing was fucked. They took it for two weeks and then an extra two days. Stefan gave me a colorful speech each time I came in about how he mods the speakers to sound better than anything, which was charming but seemed a bit like hocus pocus. The repair wound up being outside of my budget. I was not happy with the bill when I walked in to begrudgingly retrieve the record player. Then he put a record on and I was amazed at the sound. I'm not a real audiophile, but it's super satisfying to have a record player that sounds so amazing. I've never had a record player (or speakers, for that matter) that made the music sound so full and good. He totally did a babe ruth with the sound quality on this thing- as in: he said what was going to happen - I did not believe him- and then it happened. This is the real deal. I never write reviews on this site, but had to do it because of all the maroons on here writing bad reviews and directing business away from these geniuses. p.s. my thing was expensive because I knowingly bought a half broken machine with the thought of saving money- I don't recommend that move, but I'm glad it introduced me to this place. read more

Solutions is not as bad as people are making it seem. I've taken quite a few things here over the years, and yes, while certain repairs might be costly at times, they always do a great job. Stephon (owner) does talk a lot, but he also knows quite a bit about music and sound in general, and has given me great recommendations. Like a reviewer mentioned before, if you're in such a hurry, just say you gotta go. I gave it 4/5 instead of 5 because they can take a while sometimes, as they do get backed up. Completely disappointed by this place. I came here about two years back and absolutely loved it; they offered assistance on my violin, had everything I needed and knew what they were talking about. I went in yesterday hoping for the same type of experience... ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! The place was a mess, they didn't know anything about my saxophone, they didn't have an in-house technician and they only had ONE mouthpiece in the entire place. They spoke to me as if I didn't know what I was talking about and tried charging me $30 to re-cork the neck of my sax which would literally cost me $6 to do myself. I took equipment in for repair, told them what needed to be repaired, and he went off into his own weird world of fantasies. When I picked up my equipment, nothing i requested was done. Hey, I've read most of the reviews and I've had two experiences with Solutions. I took a JBL LSR 28P in for a tweeter replacement. They did it just fine, but a couple years later when a mover inadvertently put his thumb through it while taking it to another place, I decided to pull it out myself and replace it with a new JBL component. Once I got it out, (the one that Solutions had replaced for me) several of the internal screws holding the driver to the mounting plate had never been tightened. It worked, but someone forgot to torque down the screws correctly. Some of the heads weren't touching the backing plate. Later, I brought in a pair of Fostex monitors to have the cones redone. They were fine, friendly, and praised the fact that I was rebuilding these speakers since they were wonderful studio monitors at the time and still outperformed other speakers. I got them back and they sounded great. So, both times I got my stuff repaired. Perhaps the first time they didn't do a thorough job, but I've had no difficulties with the Fostex speakers. It's an odd place for sure. You're not always sure people are paying attention to what you've brought them. it may take time for someone to notice you're standing there. There are stacks of speakers and vintage gear all over the place, and a workshop in the back. It's eclectic and weird, cluttered and somehow interesting. Homeless guys sometimes are on the sidewalk in the area. Parking is on the street, and remember this is between Hollywood and Silverlake, so the neighborhood can be a bit dicey, but so far so good. I'm giving them three stars. read more

A true story It all starts when I walk into this speaker repair shop called Solutions! in Los Angeles last Friday with my broken Genelec speaker, it's been hissing and crackling and making work in my studio completely impossible. I walk in to the shop which has floor to ceiling speakers which I take as a good sign and I'm greeted by an Aisan dude in his early 50's, who spares no time in letting me know that he is a real know-his-shit kinda guy. He says he's been there for 38 years repairing speakers and suggests that when I am ready to spend a little money he can tweak mine up real nice so I can hear the Beatles the way they were meant to be heard. (red flag number 1) I tell him thanks but no, I just need to get my speaker repaired. He says no problem it's going to be $25 for the estimate which is nonrefundable but he will call me before he does any work and let me know the cost of the repair. I say great. So I called the shop back today and someone else answers and they tell me that my speakers ready. I say.. Oh okay... how much will the repair be? then my Aisan friend from the first day comes back on the phone and tells me that it's going to be $250 with parts and labor. I say, that seems like a lot! Then I ask how, much are parts and how much is labor? Oh... he says, $3 for parts and the rest of the cost is labor. I say, I thought you were going to give me an estimate first? This is the estimate, he says, (and this is where it starts to get good) he tells me that this repair is a process of elimination, the speaker is in fact not ready to go home, they've only done half the work they need to do to make sure that pesky buzz does not return. it's going to need at least three more additional hours of work before it's going to be fixed and and?unfortunately it can only be done on Monday. He went on to explain that It's very labor-intensive because each soldering wire needs to be checked and tested. Thank goodness my power supply tested okay but unfortunately he still hasn't found the cause of the crackling noise. I ask him what could've caused this? He says, sunlight, dust, the fact that I haven't wiggled the switches in the back. I just have left them there for years he says they need to be wiggled every couple years and warns me to start wiggling the switches on the back of my other speaker. All these different things could've caused what seems like extensive damage to my speaker. Well..., I say, I need it fixed so I guess Monday it is. I hang up the phone IHOP in my car and I drive over to the shady bastards store. I walk in, he's visibly shocked to see me. "Can I help you?" I say Yeah, I just was on the phone with you about my speaker. I've decided I want a second opinion. Here's $25 for the estimate where's my speaker? Ammm, over here he says, and takes me behind the counter to my speaker that's resting on a shelf completely intact. (and this is where it gets really really really good). This dude now has the nerve to tell me that I can't have the speaker now, it is still being repaired. He says, We would have to undo what we've already started. I say oh really? but the speaker has been resealed, the backplate has been re-screwed back onto the speaker and it looks as if all the work has already been completed. Are you telling me that you're going to unscrew the back and do something to it before I can take the speaker with me right now? What exactly are you planning to do to it and I notice now you got your hand on the speaker like you're worried I'm going to grab it and run out of here with it? I think that comment snapped him out of what ever psycho hustle he thought he was going to tie me up in. He then flips the script and tries to play on my sympathy and starts whining about how much work they've already done to give me this incredible information about the speaker and how that's not worth only $25. I tell him sorry buddy I just don't trust what you're saying and I feel like there's something shady going on here. I got home and plugged in the speaker and it's working like a charm. Only cost me $25 bucks, fuck you LA ConMan. read more

I took in my beloved JVC multiple CD playing receiver combo thing - I like it, even though it wasn't super expensive, because you can hook up a turntable to it. It wouldn't play CDs anymore, the door wouldn't open, etc.Stefan (sp.?) said he thought he could fix it, and also recommended doing something or other to the speakers that he promised would make them sound way better. He said that part was refundable. I said OK to both the estimate to fix the CD plus the speaker thing. I got it back quickly, exactly as described, on budget,on time, and the speakers really do sound way better! I had a really good experience with them. read more

Where should i begin with this review. I would give this wonderful business a "portal to another dimension" rating if I could. It's a store that Hunter S. Thompson might really enjoy while tripping balls. Thankfully I read the yelps before agreeing to any "work" being done to my m-audio monitors. But I wish i had before entering this suck hole. Red flags went off immediately. I walked into a episode of Hoarders. Red flag #1,the place is a dump, there is crap everywhere, no organization, and no signs of any system an electronics store should have to fix things. Red flag #2, there was radio static being played out of speakers at a deafening volume the entire time I was there. A seemingly normal stereo repair dude first helped me. I told him "Hey man, I have these monitors, one of the tweeters is blown out, can I have it fixed?" He answered rationally, "Sure, ok, we'll get that looked at". Then out of no where the strangest Asian man in LA came out of the back, and AWESOME, he is the owner. He takes over for the sane employee. I explain that the monitor's tweeter is blown from a video shoot's playback being too loud. The logical response would be "We will look at it, order the part and call you with an estimate.", but this MF'r just lets the crazy out, I mean balls to the walls, bat-shit nuts. Pardon my french here, but when a person who is not in the same dimension mentally as you expects money for service, I get heated! Red flag #3 (the worst one), after explaining the problem, he begins to tell me the physics of stereo audio--or what he believes is the hoax of stereo audio, and how it's incorrect to the human / dog ears. This has nothing to do with my situation, nor do I have the time for a lecture on audio theory. A verbal exchange that should have taken 5 minutes turned into a 25 minute nonsensical rant/lecture that went like this ( I didn't record it, but man I wish i did)... "So what happens, is speakers should be set at the height of what sound is being recorded, if the conga is this height, your speaker should be this height, and bear with me I'm trying to work on my English(his english is perfect), So if Mariah Carey is 5' 9", she is a really tall woman, I mean really tall, the speaker should be that high right? To complete the experience. I was at home one day and I noticed my Chinese dog was making circles around my speakers, and they are really nice ones. (He then draws a diagram on my receipt right in front of me, the piece of paper I am supposed to use as record of payment). He would just walk in circles around the speakers and I was playing Frank Sinatra right, and why was he walking in circles, who doesn't like Frank right? So I really needed closure on this, why was my chinese dog doing this, and then I thought, the speakers shouldn't be evenly apart, one should be here, and one should be there. right? (he draws more scribble on my receipt) But then I did this (he makes a gesture of putting stereo speakers on top on each other, an act that totally negates the idea of stereo sound and basically shits on every music engineer's mixing/panning) and then the dog stopped walking around and just sat in front of them, Poof! And I thought, that's it! Sounds shouldn't be here or there (gesturing the panning of noises from left to right), so I was thinking I needed closure on this, it's like finishing the pizza, its all like a pizza right?..." And this went on for what felt like an hour. The whole time radio static is blasting in the background, I guess to heighten the crazy factor in this vortex. I just kept looking at my poor girlfriend like WTF?!?!?!?!??! Just give me the fucking receipt and stop drawing your bullshit on it!!!!! Man I should have just took my shit and ran, but I'm too polite. So after he somehow ends his rant, and we just keep saying "right, yeah, uh huh, sure", I ask if he will call me tomorrow with a status report. This jerk says "NO, you call me". Ok sweet customer service, you seem way too busy here in this worm hole of batshittyness building columns of electro junk to call me, the customer? This dude ruined the rest of my day. To top it off, I do call the next day, and he gives me some BS answer about having to repair multiple things on the speaker and that he needs to see the amp used with it. These are self-powered monitors, no amp required, WTF would an amp have to do with it?!!! AND then he says it will cost 140 bucks. These speakers retail brand new for 300 a pair. So you want me to pay the price of one speaker to replace a tweeter? Get the fuck out of here!!!!!!! My answer: "I'm coming to get them now" ....click. My advice, don't ever waste a minute of you life in this heck hole, unless you want to listen to the craziest dude ever drop science on the relationship between Mariah, Chinese dogs, the brown tone, closure, and of course pizza. read more

To my 45 year old ears it sounded like "just" a phenomonally recorded mix cd with some of my favorite artists and songs. maybe others hear his theoretical improvements but I tell it like it is and to me it was just greatly recorded tunes. The shop is overloaded with work to be done and some gear to sell. He even offered me a great used turntable and IMHO a fantastic price, even pointed out it was not fully tested and he would get back to me with the firm details once confirmed, didn't rush me into a purchase.Busy and crowded with gear but if you don't want a mom and pop shop that is in demand go to circuit city or worst buy.....ahem, I mean best buy. He doesn't wear a blue shirt matching all the other workers, he has his own style and quite frankly if you are not a strong willed person or have nothing to contribute to the conversation you may feel a but overwhelmed or intimidated. Don't feel that way. He is such a nice dude in reality and the shop is a pleasure for those in the know. He deserved a high mark and believe me I am the type that tells it like it is whether negative or positive or anything in between. Good karma and good listening Y'all! read more
