Terrible experience!! Sit down for more than 20 min, a single waitress how was the only one taking care of the costumes, stopped by and ask the order. After 20 min, when I asked about the appetizer I ordered, told me I have to wait 15 more min for appetizer and longer for my food! it says 3 stars but maybe it should be more like a 3.5 .. why cant we give half stars?? this place, if you dont really know where it is - you wont see it. tucked in back of the main street off the green, of course there are signs out on the sidewalk and if you are looking for it, its not so hard to find .. its small, comfortable, not too fancy and the staff was super-friendly. we went here for lunch on a cold new england afternoon, and it was well worth the lunch special $7 price .. you get soup, your entree, and dessert .. ok the soup i had was a vegetarian soup not on the menu - it was good, a plain clear broth, nice crispy veg with rice noodles. i had a curry and it was just the right amount of spicey and all the vegetables were cooked just right - still crunchy and full of taste, not soft or bland. the dessert .. well, it wasn't my cup of tea but if you like tapioca pudding, maybe this is something you should try .. i dont like tapioca, and it was kinda icky - looked like fish eggs and had corn, sweet taro and beans in it! we will come back here for lunch again, i'm sure... a great deal for some good spicey thai food. Went twice and was satisfied both times. Seafood sukiyaki was awesome. Duck dishes are delicious - the duck and eggplant dish looked gorgeous in addition to tasting fabulous. Waitstaff were polite and friendly, food came on a timely fashion. Last time we were there another customer was such a loud talker it was ruining our meal. The waitstaff offered us a free dessert to make up for his rudeness. I would definitely go back again. read more

Ok, so, starting with the positives... Great food (seems to have improved greatly recently), and a very friendly staff make this a pleasant dining experience. Ambiance and theming are sparse and the color scheme is absolutely a mystery to me, but that doesn't matter to me when the food is good. Menu has lot of choices and some great "specials." Ok, now the downside, the ceiling fixtures are nasty dirty, the central light is full of dead flies, and there are cobwebs almost everyplace the wall meets the ceiling... If they'd get someone in to clean, paint, and put up some nice paintings of Thailand, this place would be amazing! I will be back, but I might leave a swifter as a tip! :-) read more

Now that I have been to more restaurants that feature ethnic foods, the appeal that Som Siam once had has faded a bit. The location is nice, right in the middle of downtown Guilford. It is a very small place & can seem like it would be a dive but the staff keeps the place in nice condition. We ordered the basics: Pad Thai & Dragon Thai Noodles. The Pad Thai is always delicious but the Dragon Thai Noodles were very salty & bland. The salads also had too much dressing. The hit always seems to be the Thai Iced Tea. ORDER THIS if you go. Overall, nothing to rush down to the shore for but if you are around Guilford, stop in! read more

I really don't know that much about Thai food, but I've gotten takeout from Som Siam a few times, and have been pretty unimpressed by my pad thai and my curry when I have. Last week we decided to dine in (mostly because the other Guilford restaurants looked crowded). I was really disappointed in my experience. Despite a restaurant that was only 1/2 full, the host decided to spend nearly 10 minutes fussing with to-go orders at the counter rather than seat us. When we got in, we were surrounded by some pretty large and noisy parties that were incredibly distracting in the tiny seating area (to be fair, this isn't really the restaurant's fault). We ordered vegetable spring rolls, only to be told that they were out of these spring rolls and if we wouldn't mind taking fried egg rolls instead. They were tiny and we didn't mind ... until another party that arrived about 30 minutes later ordered the spring rolls and were served them without issue. What was up with that? Further, it was a hassle just to get waitstaff to come by and refill our waters, let alone get us our check so we could pay. As I said above, the entrees I've gotten here are unimpressive and lack flavour. I really don't know if it's more authentic or not, but it doesn't really appeal to my palate. These poor folks are completely unprepared. They consistently run out of key ingredients, prioritize take out orders over seated patrons, and adding insult to injury, overcharged me the last time I was there. The first time I ate at Som Siam it was quiet and enjoyable, but the second time I ate there they got slammed with only one waitress on duty. This is a very decent restaurant if you order the basics: chicken or beef , maybe an eggroll. My experiences here are many and I've been disappointed each time I've tried something outside of the usual Americanized dishes. The flavours were fine, but the duck was obviously on it's way out and had been refried to give it another day and then mixed into my curry - ew! Other times, I was served tofu that had clearly gone-off. Twice the tapioca was obviously undercooked. Som Siam serves consistently good, (not great), Thai food. We probably get carryout from them every two weeks. But if we didn't have some history with them and were just walking in, we'd turn around and leave. The restaurant interior is getting more than thread bare. The carpeting in the entry/pick-up area has needed a good cleaning for years, and the main dinning room has a subtle but constant mildew smell that is noticable enough that we will no longer dine in the restaurant. Don't get me wrong, you'll enjoy the food if you get it to go, but with two other Thai restaurants in town, Som Siam really need to spend a bit of time and $$ on the interior. read more

Came here with my girlfriend. She is Thai so she is very picky with Thai restaurants and she really enjoyed it here. We ordered Som Tum(Papaya salad) and Pla Neung Manao (Whole fish with lime, garlic, chilies) and both were very delicious, some of the best we've had among Thai places in the New Haven area. 1/2 star for service!!!! 2 stars for food I am somewhat embarrassed to admit I went back to establishment after my first disappointing visit with the family (I am going to blame my 12 year old nephew who just wanted Thai food and the fam caved) with same outcome 2nd time around. Anyway, when your party is seated there is ABSOLUTELY no reason the waitstaff should ignore you for over 14 minutes!!!!! No menus, water or even a " Be with you in 2 minutes" kind of thing!!! Not everyone is friendly in this world, however if your in a service business at least fake it once in awhile. My advice is either dine at Ranchero's next door, Shep's Tavern or even go to Guilford Food Mart for a wonderful sand which. I've only eaten here a couple of times, so I don't have too much to say, but from what I can tell the food is really quite good. Service has always been great, but their prices are a bit higher than other Thai restaurants in the area. This is obviously due to location and rent being higher here, but worth noting, nonetheless. The building is cute, but you'd kind of have to go out of your way to find it. I lived three blocks away from here for two years and never knew it existed until the guy I was dating at the time mentioned meeting here for lunch, so take that for what it's worth. The building is cute and has potential, but it definitely needs some updating..hardwood flooring would be a great start. Why do restaurants insist on carpet? It's filthy, ugly, and just generally vile. Anyway, I've liked everything I've had here, I haven't had a bad experience, and the staff is friendly, but it's not a place I would go unless a friend suggested it. read more

I've been here a handful of times and it's always fantastic. Great seafood specials, great spring rolls, great tea... Really shitty dumplings though, don't order them. The ambiance is quaint... Meaning pretty but small and somewhat cramped with small tables. I definitely recommend this place to anyone from guilford or traveling through. Great family restaurant. Service with a smile. Lunch specials daily -- can't beat that. Few restaurants will offer lunch specials on weekends. Loved the chicken satays. Lunch specials come with complimentary choice of appetizer (soup, salad) and dessert (yummy tapioca). Drunken noodles was with perfect amount of spice. Suggestion: try to specify how spicy you want a dish on a 1 (bland) to 5 (sweating bullets) scale. I personally like a 4. Can't wait to try their red curry. I really love this restaurant...totally a gem tucked away on the historic Guilford Green. Food is mega consistent and great every time.

I like Som Siam. It is cozy and the food is good and I get the sense that its a family run business. The chicken sate is excellent and the beef larb very fresh and tangy, yet light. The beef panang is excellent as well. Pad Thai also a great selection. The Thai iced tea is a version I have never had before. Tasty but not what I was expecting. The pad thai here is to die for. It packs so much flavor compared to the pad thai served at some another nearby restaurants; however, the service is slightly sub-par and they do not put enough meat on to the pad thai/other noodle dishes as ayuthai and ithai do. Started with soup which was not fresh at all, crab rangoons with sub par filling, microwaved tea (and who knows what else they microwave as the beep went off repeatedly), and GREY, RANCID meat! My partner had shrimp and became very stomach sick. This is a dirty establishment with poorly maintained products and a need for a public health review! Really outstanding service! This may be the first time I've had pineapple in a Thai curry...very good. I had the peanut curry with the tilapia filet, and tried some of my wife's Pad Thai, which was also good. This has been one of my favorite restaurants since I was a kid. It's great thai food and the waitress is always smiling and super friendly. I have noticed some few changes such as the portions are a lot smaller than what they used to be. Whenever I get food to go, there's sometimes too much oil in it.
