I was excited to try a new milk tea boba place, but it was pretty disappointing. Ordered a golden milk tea with boba (which has a high mountain green tea base). They use half&half instead of milk here. Lowered the sweetness by a little, but the drink tasted so bland. I could barely taste any tea flavor at all. My boyfriend ordered the house milk tea (which has a black tea base) and similarly complained about the blandness. Wouldn't recommend coming here for milk teas at all. Looks like they use syrup for fruit teas instead of real fruit too. I heard from someone later that their teas (without half&half) are good so maybe I'll have to try that at some point. read more

Best milk tea place in Irvine now. Their signature is the best, tea flavor is very strong and the drink as a whole is very smooth. Don't mind they are not using just milk for the milk tea cuz if you want a good taste milk tea, a well balanced between creamy and tea flavor it's not gonna happen on the fresh milk teas which is just milk and tea. Basically you can't wish to have good taste, healthy, and doesn't make people fat at the same time. Anyway so Signature is our favorite so far. Golden is good too. But if you want strong tea flavor, then don't order a high mountain oolong milk tea cuz high mountain oolong tea itself is pretty light. With milk and sugar, you won't taste much tea flavors. If you want to try, then try no sugar, taste better. And their mocktails are surprisingly good. We had summer mojito, not too sweet, love the ginger tastes with lime and mint. But maybe ask for less basil seeds though. when you drinking with straw, it's all basil seeds, too much. Rosella sunset: hibiscus with grapefruit. Taste kinda like pomegranate juice. I found this place recently and have loved the environment and the vibe. It has become my go-to boba shop to hang out with friends. Though a few times I visited, there were events hosted by a lady who was from a delivery company, and people blocked the way to the ordering counter and took up spaces in the entire store. There was a time when I waited in line for more than 5 minutes, then I found out it wasn't even for ordering boba drinks, but for picking up the orders from that lady. I couldn't even sit and chill there with friends because half of the store was taken up by the table and food that the lady placed there. Plus, she and her customers were talking so loudly, it sounded like they were shouting at each other instead of talking; all we could hear was their noisy conversation and laughter, just like a wet market in Asia. Not only were we bothered by the noise, but also the store was full of the odor of their food, yuck! So my friends and I didn't stay long. Events like that often happen, so the place was not as chill and quiet as before. I'd rather go to other tea shops where I can enjoy the drinks and chill with friends in town than this one. read more

Soma took over where Bambu used to be in the Taiko and Thai Cafe plaza on Walnut/Jeffrey. They let us try samples so we tried the signature milk tea and lychee tea. I ended up getting the sesame milk tea with 25% sweetness and normal ice. Thought this place was just okay and I wasn't too impressed. The milk tea barely has any tea flavor, and the sesame milk tea only had a hint of sesame - wish it was stronger. It's nice they offer oatly oat milk as a non-dairy alternative. read more

I wasn't the biggest fan of the drinks the first time I tried Soma a few months ago, but I liked the Lychee High Mountain Tea I had this time. I think the paper cups the drinks come in might affect the taste if not consumed quickly (brought it back home last time vs drank immediately this time) but I'm not sure. For the boba itself, I thought the texture was good, albeit slightly harder than my ideal. The sweetness level also seems slightly less sweet than the average boba place. I got their Lychee High Mountain Tea but I didn't really like it because their default sweetness is 50%. I wasn't aware that was their default and my boyfriend and I usually get 100% sweetness so it wasn't as good to us. It's more a human error if anything though so can't really blame them. I just wish I had known before ordering. I also ordered the Tipsy Breeze which is a lavender lemonade. I also wasn't aware it was sparkling so I didn't like it but the girl working was very nice and let me change my drink. We heard raving reviews from our friends in Taiwan about this boba shop, Soma. It is very popular store in Taiwan with people lining up to get it. We can't believe we actually have a store in Irvine! We came here on a Sunday afternoon. The store was busy with a line. It's not too bad. I was expecting the line out of the store and needed to wait 30 mins for boba. I tried their famous award-winning Signature Milk Tea with aloe vera, 25% sugar. I loved the strong black tea flavors. I selected 25% sugar because that's my usual. However, I can see why they recommend 50% sugar because the tea flavor is very strong. Nonetheless, the milk tea was great. Aloe vera was good too. It allowed me to taste the milk tea without the sweetness. I may try it with boba next time. read more

Not a lot of places have basil seeds as an add-on, but here they make it standard. It's like the Boiling Point refresher without the hot meal in the summer. The sesame milk tea is full of flavor and has a good aroma but is a bit too grainy. Would probably be better strained or blended more. read more

I'm all about trying new boba places so, I'm glad there's another one in Irvine for me to check out. SOMA took over Bambu and has upgraded it's interior to look modern and simple inside. I tried the Tropical Utopia which is a tea with grapefruit and orange with basil seeds. It's usually 50% recommended for the sugar level but I usually like my drinks sweet so I went ahead with 75%. The drink was super refreshing and not artificial at all. I can def taste the tea flavor. Great service and drinks. I will def come back next time with my housemates. read more

I came in Aug 19th at 8:45pm and just received the worst service from Elva. I ordered a white peach milk tea and she rudely responded WHAT?! with a very sour look on her face. I repeated myself and my husband mentioned I may be confusing my drink with another tea shop since they didn't have that item. Okay, that is my mistake but it doesn't warrant such a rude response. She should have just responded "we don't have that drink here" and that would have been a fine response. That should have been my cue to leave but we had already made the drive and were there. Proceeded to quickly order another drink and paid. I then see Elva drop my cup that had the label on the floor and the cup bounced around. Thinking she would communicate with the other barista that the cup is dirty or eventually trash that cup, I kept a close eye making sure my drink wasn't going to be poured in that cup. Well the other barista (she was fine) went to pour my drink in there! I stopped her and asked for a clean cup since Elva had just dropped it. She proceeded to use another cup but if I had not mentioned anything, I would have been drinking out of a cup that was bouncing around their nasty floor....I received no apology or offer for refund or anything. Their eyes were just glued to floor and not taking any accountability. I just wanted to get out of there. Owners, please review the footage of the incident and train your employees about hygiene and how to serve customers properly, it is their job after all. read more

Though there are a few other boba places in this plaza & SOMA is tucked away in the corner, this is our personal favorite stop to grab a quick drink. The service is kind, courteous, and very efficient - no need to wait a long time! Our typical order is usually a Signature Milk Tea paired with a fruity High Mountain Tea (passion fruit & grapefruit are my personal faves!). The signature milk tea (regular or oat milk is really good) is well balanced in terms of tea to creaminess level, and the cups are reminiscent of getting boba milk tea in Taiwan. I'm really picky about milk teas (dislike overly creamy or thick/oily viscosity that some places serve) and find that the milk tea here is really tasty. The fruit high mountain teas come with free basil seeds in the drink (you can opt out if you don't want it), which is a fun added texture to have to the drinks. I love that you'll find real passion fruit seeds inside the passion fruit high mountain tea instead of the syrups. The fruit drinks are sweeter than the milk teas, so I usually go for 25%. There are also non-caffeinated mock tails on the menu which are good for those who don't like tea. Overall, I would say this place is definitely worth a try if you're curious. It's a bit of a hidden gem for now with other Irvine competitors, but our favorite go-to places for solid drinks all around. read more

I went there twice in a row, and the barista kept getting my name wrong. It was actually kind of funny. My name is Vicky, but she spelled it as 'Freaky' the first time and 'Bicky' the second time (I even spelled it out for her). It might've been my accent, but who would name themselves Freaky anyway? My family and I had a good laugh, though. The mountain tea selection is great! I really like the nice tea aroma with a hint of fruity syrup of any kind. Topping options include boba, aloe, lychee jelly. I would say good place to go if in area but would not go out of way. At least for the drinks we tried. I tried SOMA tea after seeing good reviews and being in the area. I got the grapefruit high mountain tea at 25% sweetness (50% is regular). The tea is decent and came with complimentary basil seeds. My sister got the signature milk tea at 25%, but the drink wasn't sweet enough. The workers added more syrup and the drink was much better. Located in a very busy plaza with lots of restaurants and two other boba spots. I was expecting a bit more from SOMA with a name including mocktail but it's just another tea shop. I ordered the Summer Mojito and just tasted like mineral water and some syrup. There was no mint or lime flavor and they may have forgotten to muddle the mint and squeeze the lime. So I took it home and extracted the mint and lime and muddled it myself and poured it back into the drink. It tasted so much better and what I was expected to taste refreshing like a virgin mojito. Could have been more tea specialized with tea flavor to go with the tea shop though. My partner ordered high mountain lychee and that was good with a good lychee flavor but nothing special to come back to. I am willing to try the other mocktails when I am in the area again but with other popular tea shops around and closer proximity to me, it'll probably be a while for me to come back. read more

Came here with a group of friends on a Saturday night. It was pretty rainy so maybe that's why the place was empty? It was definitely cute and had comfy couches and claw machines! They had run out of a lot of drinks, but I was happy with my high mountain milk tea. The boba was soft and chewy! I ordered with my friends so we could get the free drink (the original milk tea) I actually didn't drink that until two days later and it was still really good! The drinks are a decent price and there's a good amount of parking in front of the store. New boba place! We decided to try this place since Orobae had such a long line. The boba store is super aesthetic looking! I loved the interior design and the bench seats were pretty comfortable. However, we will probably not be returning since the milk teas were subpar. For reference, I usually get my drinks with 75% sweet or regular sweet. - golden milk tea with 25% less sweet: 2/5 tasted really bland like plain milk, barely tasted like tea! - sesame milk tea: 3/5 sesame flavor was present but very mild. - signature milk tea: 3.5/5 tastes like something you could get at tapioca express. Was not very sweet. Overall, we wouldn't come here again unless our friends wanted to try it out. Maybe next time I'll try the fruit teas!
