I tried Tortilla Flats for the first time last night and I was happy with the experience! We went around 6:00 on a Saturday night so I was a little worried there wouldn't be a table available. Thankfully they had plenty and we were seated right away. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and has a massive and well stocked bar. We were seated next to the bar and window and I will say that it made for a pretty loud experience. Nothing they can necessarily do about that though. Our waitress was attentive and had great recommendations for food. I ordered the iced tea and the "incredible burrito". Our food came out quickly and I was impressed by the portion sizes and quality of the food. If I had to give a minor criticism is that I felt the plate was actually a bit too small for the meal. Everything kind of melded together and fell off the plate. However, everything else was great. The rice was plentiful and had a nice flavor. The chili was a great addition and the burrito itself was filled well and I enjoyed the chicken and beef. This is definitely a place I would come back to, and with such an expansive menu there's something different you could try each time you come in. read more

I had some coupons for tacos from here so I decided to check them out on a Friday night. They dont have a designated parking lot, but there is a lot of street parking in the area. It was pretty packed for a late night. We were seated at a booth immediately upon entering, and our waitress brought us out some water. She gave us the taco options; they were pretty standard in that it was beef, chicken, pork, or veggies and either ground or shredded. We realized that on Tuesdays, they offer these tacos for $2 when you buy a drink which is a good deal considering they were big and filling. We ended up ordering 2 crunchy tacos and 2 soft tacos, beef and pork. To accompany the tacos, we tried their buff-a-que wings. We thought $15 was a lot for wings since it was on the appetizer menu, but it came with 10 wings so not bad. They were okay; the skin was grilled, but the flavor was a but subtle. It had been a few years since I had visited Tortilla Flats, which has been a fixture in PVD since the 1970's. My friend and I happened to be in the area and since we both had fond memories of this establishment, and we had RI Food Fights Tacomania coupons, we were excited for a walk down memory lane. We ordered drinks off of the seasonal menu. I tried the autumn sangria, which was pretty weak. My friend liked her mocktail. For food, we started with chips and salsa, which were good. Our ground beef tacos and pork tacos were served in crunchy shells and were a few steps above Taco Bell. Not the best I've had, but certainly not the worst. My friend enjoyed a cheese quesadilla, and I liked my ground beef tamale which was smothered with red enchilada sauce and melted cheddar. We also ordered Mexican rice, which was pretty standard, although the rice and the salsa had a spice (cumin?) that I wasn't really fond of. The real standout of the meal for us was the pumpkin cheesecake. This was absolutely amazing and instead of splitting one slice, we probably should have each ordered our own. I would go back again just for the pumpkin cheesecake, it was that good! Service at Tortilla Flats was ok - there were a variety of servers who all seemed to be working together with taking orders & delivering food & drinks. I would give the service here 5 stars. The staff is wonderful and I only have good things to say. The restaurant was clean and the ambiance was pleasant too. Nothing over the top, but it's neat and clean and I like the set up. I came here for RI food fights best taco RI and well it's just not that. The tacos, along with my cocktail, was underwhelming. I was honestly disappointed. If they can step up their game with the food and drink quality, this place has potential. The place was as lively as it ever was although less full than it is usually as the university semesters were now over. We had a Garden Quesadilla and a crispy Tostada- both large servings were quite tasty. (I was unable to finish the latter and took half of it home and had it the next day.) We shared a large Chocolate Lava Cake. All this was washed down with large and delicious (and potent) Margaritas- perhaps comparable with the best we have had in the city. I'm surprised how much this place has gone downhill since covid. This used to be our regular place to go; when we first moved to Rhode Island a friend introduced us to Flats and we would go at least once a week. Then Covid hit and it took them much longer than any other local place to finally reopen with the restrictions/protections in place so we got out of the habit of going all the time. We just went for the first time in probably a couple months and the food has gone way down hill, they have significantly changed the menu and the quality of the food just isn't the same. The salsa just doesn't have the same sweetness it used to have and it even looked different, they removed my go-to item the Savannah Quesadilla and also removed the buffalo chicken Quesadilla as well. They also either don't know how to make churros anymore or they are being real stingy on the cinnamon sugar; rather than them being coated in it they just sprinkled some on top so it felt like we were just eating bland dough sticks. The one saving grace is that their drinks are always good and strong, usually only need one of the Flats Margaritas to get a buzz going. One last note, they now seem to charge a fee to use credit/debit cards. We were extremely surprised to see the fee on our check as they have never had it before and I don't remember it being stated anywhere on the new menus that they now have this fee. read more

I always order the three item combo with a shredded beef taco, chicken enchilada with mole, and the third option I switch up but lately it's been the chicken burrito. I've tried the ribs once and they were good but i'm a creature of habit so I stick to what I know I love! I would say the margaritas are the best in town (especially for the price point) with only my bassist making a better one at home- I either go with the house or coconut on the rocks with salt. Prices have gone up over the past 8 years but they have everywhere. I hope this place sticks around with the news of the sale. Pre pandemic I lived very close to tortilla flats and frequented it. I recently went back for the first time in about a year for dinner with friends. I split the Armadillo and Diablo quesadillas with one of my friends. The Armadillo was delicious, and the Diablo was surprisingly spicy. I'm glad I only had half because I had to smoother my second fourth with sour cream to prevent a lot of discomfort. I think it would be the perfect dish for someone into spice. The restaurant is very comfortable with a mix of booths, tables, and bar seating, and our server was very nice and attentive. The mole in the chicken dish is made with hershey's syrup and pre-cooked frozen chicken with fake grill marks that is just reheated. Come on! Years ago we loved Tortilla Flats. Now it's just a sad reminder of what it used to be. And it's filthy. The wood panels are caked with dust and grime and the artwork hasn't been wiped down in god knows how long. They should legally have to change their name from tortilla flats to something else because this is not the old tortilla flats. The tried and true margarita that's always been delicious was absolutely disgusting and undrinkable. The steak tips I ordered were more like steak nuggets and were overcooked while the onions and mushrooms were barely warmed up at all, and the pulled pork sliders were less than satisfying. I'm certain I've mentioned that I'm not a New England Mexican Food fan because I grew up in New Mexico, and it's impossible for me to fairly review Mexican food. So, this is a review of the bar scene because I care here to drink. Specifically I came to drink a pumpkin cocktail, for an article I'm writing, and I was told Jessie the bar manager could hook me up. And DID SHE EVER. She made my friend and me a pumpkin margarita and a pumpkin piña colada, and I have no idea how she did it, but they were the best pumpkin cocktails I've had in years (~RIP Kitchen Bar's Pumpkin Pie Martini~). She also made a pumpkin White Russian and let us sample the new downeast pumpkin cider. This is more than your stereotypical white girl/yoga pants/pumpkin latte level drinks. If you like margaritas, or piña coladas, or White Russians, you'd love these. I have now decided Tortilla Flats is a worthy spot to hang out, especially on Monday and Thursday nights (when Jessie is there!), but also because it offers great space and a relaxed vibe without being divey. This is a great place for hanging out and enjoying Tex Mex food with friends! Kinda gave me a Chili's vibe. I came here with a group of friends and we were seated right away. Positives: chips and salsa is a HUGE portion for only $2.50, also huge food portions with reasonable prices, server was friendly, lots of different foods available on the menu, nice atmosphere (not too loud or quiet). Negatives: the salmon on my salad was burned and dry (made it difficult to eat/enjoy), our drinks all came out at different times. I'd definitely come back here and try a different thing on the menu! I've been coming to Tortilla Flats for years. I didn't realize that I hadn't actually left a review!! These are a few of my favorite things: Chips & Salsa, chimichangas (beef or chicken), nachos, ultimate burrito, quesadillas (any kind). MARGARITAS!!! And frozen strawberry margaritas. The service is good, the atmosphere is fun, and the drinks are always flowing!! For my meal, I ordered the two item combination meal. I had the chicken burrito and tamale that came with rice and refried beans. I liked the tamale better than the burrito but overall, they were both bland. I really should've went with my heart and ordered the beef over cornbread dish!
