RI Food Fights' "Taco Mania!" brought us to Terra Negra, and we're glad it did! The restaurant has two dining areas -- an indoor dining room and an outdoor patio in beautiful DePasquale Square. The indoor space had a lingering hookah smell that was a bit distracting, but there was a cool ofrenda display that gave it a unique touch. If the weather allows, I'd definitely recommend sitting outside on the patio for a more enjoyable vibe. Our server was excellent -- attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. We started with complimentary tortilla chips that were perfectly seasoned and served with a fresh, flavorful salsa. For tacos, we went with the Chicharron and Adasa, both topped with cilantro, red onions, radish, lime, and a green taquera sauce. Each was authentic, well-balanced, and absolutely delicious. I was hesitant to go in at first because of the vibe (hookah, loud music, etc), but I am so glad I did. I came on a Tuesday, with some coupons for free tacos. But, even without coupons, they have an amazing taco Tuesday deal - $2 each, with a large assortment to choose from. They have an outdoor dining area, but it was far too cold. Inside, they have a row of booths to the left, a couple tables in the middle, the bar to the right, and a more exclusive area at the back of the restaurant. Of course, all the booths were taken so we had to take one of the middle tables which was a bit awkward. They did have a DJ playing some tunes. We started by ordering 4 tacos, but because they were so good, added another later. We tried the carne asada, chorizo, and chicharron. While we waited, they brought out chips and salsa to snack on. After about 10 minutes, the food came out. The tacos were small. but packed with flavor and meat to compensate. The carne asada was tender and so flavorful. The chicharron was probably my least favorite since it was too fatty. The chorizo was incredible! I think it had cheese on the bottom which only enhanced and balanced out the flavors. What made these tacos even better though was the green salsa on the side. It was unbelievably good - I had to ask for a container to go. It's a tiny bit creamy, so it might have had avocado, it was a tiny-bit sour, so I am thinking lime, and it had a kick to it. Love Terra Negra. Great drinks, vibes, & food. They have a variety of cocktails to try - I usually order a margarita with fish tacos for my entree. Delicious. They also provide complimentary chips and salsa. They offer hookah - several different flavors so if you don't like hookah this might be a turnoff. I love coming here with friends, sitting outside on the patio during the warmer weather or inside where the music is blasting. Came here for RI Food Fights Tacomania and honestly was not expecting much because it's in such a touristy spot on Atwells, loud music, felt more like a hookah place. However... their taco Tuesday deals... unbeatable. Very pleasantly surprised and will be coming back. All of their street tacos on Tuesday are $2 and they are very generous with the meat and portion size. Taste was also surprisingly good too - I did have low expectations, but this definitely beat any expectations I had. Waiters were quite helpful and service was fast. I visited this place during the taco mania fest. Terra Negra Cantina and Terra Luna Cafe are owned by the same people. Terra Negra focuses on Mexican cuisine, while Terra Luna offers Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Colombian dishes. I'm not sure why they weren't combined into one restaurant. The ambiance inside is quite nice. I tried the Al Pastor and Chicken Tinga tacos. I wasn't a fan of the Al Pastor tacos, but the Chicken Tinga ones were good. The toppings were abundant. This was our 2nd time at the restaurant and honestly we should go more often. One tip is if you want to avoid big crowds, go on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursdays. All the other days can be more of a party vibe if that's what you are looking for. Food: - guacamole: this was good and fresh-ish. It was cold which felt like it was refrigerated. Other than that the flavor was good. Could use more salt and spices though. - Al pastor tacos was good as a whole. However the pork can be chopped down to a smaller size and marinated more. I would still order it again. - the chicken tinga tacos were good but could use more seasoning. - the chicken flautas: omg! U gotta come hungry for this one. It's massive! But it's tasty and with some hot sauce it's even better. - birra burger: another massive one! They don't skim on the portion for this. It's a good burger and cheesy as well. Comes with fries. Went to Terra Negra for dinner, on a Friday night, wasn't busy so got sat right away. My husband took a lot time deciding but waitress was nice and understanding. She brought us a free shot of birria broth; ive never had it and was delicious. Mt husband got a mango mojito, tasted like a pina colada. He got steak and fries, came with a side (he picked salad) but also rice and beans. Lots of food. He wasn't impressed with the steak, said had lots of nerves, but i tried it and seasoned really well. I had a steak salad, was good, just felt like missing something! Maybe avocado would of made it better but was still good! Its a nice place, big bar, cosy and dark . Would recommend it for dates. I arrived for the taco Tuesday deals and it looked 20% full but once seated, no one took notice of us for a good 30 minutes. Completely ignored with service non-existent and no water in sight. Plenty of servers were around, but no one said anything. One asked if we wanted hookah, but then promptly left when we said we weren't interested. This is a long overdue review of this restaurant. I came here with my friend on a Tuesday because I saw their taco Tuesday advertisement on instagram. On Tuesday they offer 2$ tacos and 5$ shots, and honestly the 2$ tacos sounded so good to us. The restaurant has plenty of street parking, but there is not any parking garage nearby. The restaurant has an outdoor setting as well as an indoor one, due to the windy weather we opted for indoor. (I think it is important to mention that they check ID's before entering so you have to be 21+ to enter). The inside interior is very casual but very nicely decorated. The restaurant Is of a decent size and the ambiance is lovely. There is loud music playing throughout the night and if you don't like that then this place is not for you. I really loved how they played different genres of music like rap, Afro beats, Spanish music and dancehall. Now for the most important part: the FOOD. I ordered a cheese quesadilla because unfortunately the 2$ taco deal did not offer shrimp or fish tacos and I am a pescatarian. My friend took advantage of the 2$ deal and ordered plenty of tacos which they said were delicious and filling. The part I enjoyed the most about my dinner was their delicious cocktails. No need for a reservation. We ordered the Carnitas, chicken, and pork tacos all of them were very good. Pork burrito is huge, very flavorful. I had the Chicken Cesar salad comes with dressing on the side for your convenience shredded lettuce and small croutons which I love! Mexican fries with chicharron were amazing! Comes with crema, nacho cheese and avocado which is the perfect bite. I personally would add pico and jalapeños. Keep in mind if you ask for water it is a $5 bottle of still water. 15% gratuity automatically added but the service by Valeria was top tier. What a cool spot located in one of Providence's most iconic spots - De Pasquale Square! We visited as part of RI Food Fights TacoMania challenge & sat at the beautiful bar, which allowed us to chat with the bartender all about this newer spot. She gave many good suggestions about dishes to try. With fun, festive lighting & decor, this would make a great spot to meet friends for an evening of cocktails & eats. The tacos we tried, a shrimp & a birria, we're delicious! We also ordered nachos, which would have benefitted from fresh cheese sauce and chips instead of pre-made packaged ingredients. Was not too impressed. Wanted to order something light since I would be seeing friends right after, so I ordered the nachos. They looked like Tostitos Bite Sized chips and the cheese was like nacho cheese/cheese sauce... did not seem authentic at all and just hastily put together. After dining outside, I got the check and was surprised to see this 15% service charge?? Did not understand what that was for. Did not bother asking since my friend and I were heading somewhere after. To top it off, I saw a tiny mouse running around while we were dining outside. Stumbled upon this place walking through the square. The food is quite nice. Highly recommend the empanadas. They're not a typical empanada, but they are delicious. The ceviche de coco was also very good although the plantain chips it is served with were a bit soggy. I'd skip the tres leches cake which texturally wasn't great. The drinks are a whole other story, basically stick to what you know because the drinks on the menu were not delicious. But overall I'd go again because the food is a solid B+. read more

Imagine paying a 15% service charge for slow service and still having your drink made incorrectly. Why even list your ingredients if you're not going to follow it? Grabbed a mushroom mezcalita and it's meant to have black salt or chapulines. Bartender never asked what I wanted. Brought out my drink with neither. Then when I asked if it was meant to come with any salt she grabbed it and rimmed it with the regular salt. I'm not going to waste product or time so I didn't bother asking her to correct it. She seemed unenthused, servers seem to stand and chat in the middle of walkways. Seemed like a cool spot for a margarita, but I'd rather go somewhere where they actually care about the quality of what they're making. I'll just go to Xaco Taco next time. read more

BUYER BEWARE! I was charged a 15% service fee while dining as a party of 2. I paid through their tablet, and the 1st screen for payment that appears is the tip. I tipped as I normally would, however as you can see on the receipt I was charged a 15% service fee. At no time was this fee mentioned to me, and I feel this is a deceitful and unethical practice. I called the restaurant when I realized the fee, and have received no response. I will never again return to this restaurant as I feel cheated. Have been a handful of times. The last two visits we had a waiter by the name of, Jose P. He greeted us with a warm welcome back with a smile. He remembered us from the last visit, which was a pleasant surprise. He was quick with the service of bringing our drinks and food. He was attentive, cheerful and ensure to check in with us each time he made his rounds at the table. It was great service and hope to be able to have Jose each time. We had the quesadillas and street tacos. All were tasty but I recommend staying away from the shrimp. The shrimp was overcooked both times I have ordered. Won't be trying the shrimp again. read more

Ordered the Margarita Flight during Sunday brunch. When the drink order finally arrived they were 4 VERY small glasses. Regular price $40 but brunch $30. Way overpriced for the amount served. Would have been better off just ordering a Margarita not the flight. Guacamole was good but chips lacking. They looked like Tostitos ?? Not that hard to make good fresh chips if you want to be authentic. Kicker was after we paid I examined the receipt...We were overcharged for the flight by $10, they added their own 15% tip which we didn't realize and we had indicated a 20% tip. Needed to get the manager to correct the bill (even after that it still was not right). They gave us back the $10 but their 15% tip was still calculated at the incorrectly inflated initial charge. Food came out sporadically and then two of my children ordered cheese quesadillas, and the waitress said that they had mess them up. I went here for the RI Food Fights taco competition and really liked it! The menu was extensive and had some vegetarian options, which is always nice to see. I got a birria taco and a shredded chicken taco and both were great. We also got a Mexican pizza, quesadilla, and flan, all of which was great but the flan was AMAZING. The margaritas were delicious, too. Everything was spot on and the vibe was fun and reminded me of places we went to in Miami. The service was also good. Sunday afternoon in federal hill. Decided to try something new. It was hot out so my wife and I opted for indoor. We were the only ones inside and just four tables outside. Waited five minutes for waitress to take drink orders. Asked for the margarita flight, which was described as four margaritas ($30 for four versus $14 each) and better value. Waited 15 minutes for drinks. The four drinks in small glass would not even equal two normal sized margaritas (rip off). Ordered apps. They were ok. Giving how slow service was I finally flagged down someone for the check and gave my card to expedite. After signing I thought that it was more than expected. They charged me $40 for the margarita flight and added a 15% tip on top of my standard 20%. After flagging them down again and discussing with the manager they reduced the charge by $10. I could challenge the charge with my credit card company but it's not worth the hassle. Chalk it up to lesson learned. I will never go back her or their sister place next door read more

i was excited to come here because by the looks of it , looks pretty fun and it's new , always love trying new places BUT i was not impressed at all. the service sucked , waiter was always no where to be found and knew nothing about the menu. i had the terra negratia marg and it tasted like grape juice. the chips and salsa were not good at all , the salsa had a ketchup consistency and tasted smokey and bland just awful . we had the piñata tacos. which consist of 10 mix tacos and they gave us 3 of the same tacos which is not what we asked for. we also go the esqote which is like elote but off the cobb and that was ok , but they added lettuce to that which is very weird but i guess that's their take on it . anyways when the bill came , they added a $2 to the esqote which made no sense, and when i asked the waiter she said she wasn't sure and then took it to her manager and then said the manger took it off ... but yet the bill was the same price from when i saw it.... anyways at that point i wanted to leave so i didn't care anymore . yeah worst experience , won't be going back at all. i'm all set . read more
