Great spot in the Wollaston area for a mix of Izakaya and Udon noodles but the recent addition of sushi options has really gotten us back here to dine more often. Everything that we've tried so far (and we eat a lot!) have been a solid 4+ stars: Fried oysters, Chicken gizzards, Tako wasabi, Kurobuta sausage, Ankimo and the Hamachi kama all excellent starters. What surprised us most was the quality of the sashimi -- so fresh and tasty. You can't go wrong with the hamachi, salmon, tuna or special scallops and the ikura nigiri and the Torched Salmon Maki were both fantastic. The only thing that would've elevated this more is if they had options to order it as sushi dinners vs needing to order everything a la carte to get a decent amount of sushi as an entree. For the noodle soup lovers, my 2 year old ate the entire adult-sized bowl of Kitsune Udon! I tried a bite just to see what all the excitement was and can attest that it's got a nice sweeter broth that will get your kiddos hooked. Somenya in Quincy is a solid spot and definitely worth checking out. From the start the drinks impressed us especially the lychee cocktail which was easily a standout and so refreshing. Every appetizer we tried was a hit with the crab rangoon being the clear favorite crispy flavorful and hard to stop eating. They're known for their udon noodles so we had to try a few. The Snow Crab Udon was comforting and well balanced (may not be for everyone as this dish is served cold!) while the Beef Kimchi Udon (served warm) brought a nice kick of heat and bold flavor. We also ordered the Chicken Curry Don rice bowl which was hearty and satisfying and rounded out the meal nicely. Overall this is a great go to spot in Quincy for udon and Japanese comfort food. If I could give half star I would give SomenYa 3.5 stars. Service was slow. The host and server was one person. We had to wait awhile to see him walk around. The restaurant is nicely decorated with Asian decor and it's rather clean. The restaurant side was quiet while the bar side was lively. Food was hit and misses. There were a few things that were packed with flavors and some were lacking it. My favorite dish was spicy chicken gizzards. I personally didn't enjoy this udon restaurant. I've tried it twice -- once when they first opened and again more recently -- and both times the udon just didn't impress me. The flavors felt off, and some lacked flavor. For the price, I don't think the udon is worth it, especially since the Chinatown location tastes much better in comparison. That said, the appetizers here are really good, and I've heard the drinks are great (though I haven't tried them myself). I also haven't had the rice bowls, so those might be worth checking out. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, and I think it's a nice spot if you're looking for small bites and drinks -- just not for the udon. Exquisite interior that really pulls you out of Quincy, MA. It's neatly sectioned off between a bar area and a dining area with some large semicircle booths along the windows - lovely concept. The service is quick and food took a reasonable time to prepare. We got the cold udon (not pictured unfortunately), spicy beef udon, and a fried octopus (squid? calamari?) appetizer. They were all delicious, the cold udon was chewy and the broth in the hot udon is really well balanced - not too spicy either, not like a mala kind of feel. The fried appetizer was crunchy and chewy. Soft opening, we liked the spot in Chinatown and noticed they opened on Beale street in Quincy right down the street from Wollaston T. Ambiance and decor were nice and super inviting. Dining on the right with bar counter on the left. Now we know this is like a soft opening as they don't have soba noodles which is what we wanted to order so we had to go with udon. Soba noodles and sushi is coming soon they said. So a bit disappointing start but overall that's okay we proceeded. Like others may have said to us, the koji chicken was like what you'd expect karage chicken to be. It wasn't the crispiest but the chicken was juicy and tender. Extra hot temp which is always good for us and came with some QP mayo and some spice we added that was available on the table. The lady knows what's it was called i can't recall. It paired well! Now the beef sukiyaki for us today, the broth was good for us, had good depth of flavor, so I'm hoping their process gets streamlined for consistency (just reading other folks experience here thus far) like their chinatown counter part. The portion was straight for our hunger level. The tantan is what i got, i think there could have been more of the ground meat, it was mostly noodles and garnish and i concur with the lady the sukiyaki was better. The broth wasn't actually spicy (now i don't mean kick you in the face spicy but a hint of a kick would've been welcome haha). Nice addition to the Wollaston area for a simple meal. I tried the location in Chinatown, which has a more extensive menu, and I expected this place to have a similar menu. However, they focused on udon, with no selection of soba, which was disappointing. I wish they would add more selection soon, as this place is significantly larger than the Chinatown location. The service is slow on a Friday lunch since there is only one person at the front who has to greet, and also a server. If one person is working, they should have some alert when someone enters, even if there is no one at the front. We ordered hot sukiyaki beef udon and cold sukiyaki beef udon. The udon has a nice texture, being chewy rather than soft. However, since I had udon the day before at Yume Ga Arukara, Somenya still needs more improvement, especially in their soup base, as they offer a wider selection. read more

Oh wow! I totally did not know or expect Somenya to open in Quincy, what a treat! They currently have one other location in Boston's Chinatown, which serves both soba + udon noodles, as well as appetizers + rice bowls. Currently, they are having their soft opening & are located on Beale St, in the Wollaston neighborhood of Quincy. Conveniently located by the Wollaston T. They've got a beautiful space inside, and is noticeably larger than their Chinatown location! Bathrooms are clean & single occupancy (LOVE THIS!). For now, they are only offering udon noodles for their noodle dishes & will soon be adding the soba noodle option, as well as sushi in the future, according to our server. We decided to order the beef sukiyaki udon, spicy tantan udon, & Koji fried chicken as our appetizer to try. The Koji fried chicken was tasty, similar to chicken karaage. It came with a kupie mayo dip that paired well with the chicken. I enjoyed mixing the mayo w/ the shichimi togarashi (provided at each table), to dip with the chicken! Chicken was not dry at all and was super moist + juicy. I liked the beef sukiyaki udon more than I did the spicy tantan udon. The beef is very flavorful and I love the caramelized onions added! ***Important to note that the spicy tantan is not actually spicy*** It was still good but the flavor profile was not my favorite. Walked in and the interior is absolutely beautiful! Modern Japanese decor with plenty of cherry blossoms scattered throughout the restaurant. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal! Some top highlights: Spicy scallop sashimi appetizer- scallop was extremely fresh. 5/5 Spicy beef udon (cold) - if you're a fan of CHEWY noodles, you will LOVE IT. I have never had such chewy and bouncy udon in my life and now I'm hooked! As someone who loves all my noodles to have a bite to it, I was in heaven. The decor has to be one of the best in Quincy if not the best, moment you step into the restaurant, feels like you are no longer in Quincy MA. Their thoughtfulness to details are amazing. Customer service was amazing and the decor/ambiance is really beautiful. We got the baked cheese, cucumber salad and real crab rangoons for starters and the Kitsune udon for the main. Had a great midweek meal at Somenya. Yummy cocktails and everything we ate was really tasty. We had chicken wings, fried soft shell crab and udon. Some of the best udon noodles and broth I've ever had. The space was cute and inviting as well. We sat at the bar and the bartender was personable. The food: we expected them to have soba (or at least some sort of thin noodle - somen - it's in the name!!) but unfortunately only udon and rice bowls. No biggie, we ordered some udon. I had the beef sukiyaki udon, which wasn't terrible, but there was only a few strips of beef. Broth was unremarkable and pretty one dimensional. At $20 a bowl you should be doing better. My partner ordered the kitsune udon - again, broth was lacking flavor... disappointing. The Koji chicken however was nice and juicy, that was the highlight of the meal. Please add more tempura items to the menu!! The ambiance: servers just stood in a corner watching us eat... a little unsettling. Please don't do this.. I really wanted to like this spot. Food was not good... for a space specializing in udon I was really expecting more. The udon lacked flavor and depth, tasted super watered down. For $16+ a bowl you would expect the flavor to be there at least but it totally missed the mark. You'd be happier getting a packet of instant udon from the 99 Ranch down the street. read more
