The braised pork rice dish at Song La is the closest thing I've had in Austin to what my mother used to cook for me as a kid. The flavor of the braised pork was spot on, as was the texture from the mix of meat and belly fat. The accompanying cabbage with rice and soy sauce egg (Taiwanese style) were also mainstays in our diet growing up. So above all else, I must give Song La credit for this really well executed dish which seemed tailored to my palette. On this trip I also tried the chicken bites. They were served up piping hot with a flavorful crisp breading wrapped around tender chunks of both white and dark meat. I liked them, but not as much as the braised pork. They didn't benefit from the same nostalgic factor since my parents left deep frying breaded chicken exclusively to KFC. The only downside to Song La was the wait. They tried to give fair warning by saying up front how long it should take. But the 25 minute estimate was off by a factor of 2. So that's something to be aware of if you're running short on time. But good food can take time, even food truck food, so I'll give them a pass on that. read more

The food is cooked from the heart with so much love from Shirley she takes so much time out of her days freshly prepping all her meats and kimchee. The chicken bites box is one for the books the seasoning on the marinated and deep-fried basil chicken is so good! Her food is complimented with rice and veggies if you get the Bento option a variety of the time and you can always get the rice on the side including veggies. keep up the great work Shirley at Song La. Definitely recommend going to her food truck to all local austinites visiting the south Austin area in and week out as the food truck is located in a cool food truck park called thicket. I was expecting a bit after hearing about this place from many of my friends, but I guess I'd have to say I'm a bit disappointed. The prices are good, but something is definitely lacking in the food's flavor. I got the pork chop bento box, and I guess I was expecting what I usually get from food stalls back in Taiwan, but this was soggy and bland. I expected the 30 minute wait, since I hadn't called in, but with the addition of bland food it wasn't really worth it. The toy they had as a side dish in the bento box was disappointing too. By the time I walk back onto campus it had already gone sour. Or perhaps it wasn't fresh to begin with. I had to throw it away. However, a redeeming quality is that their Boba tea is quite nice. Taiwanese comfort food that's available right by campus! They are a food truck in the space behind the Co-Op. Chances are when you go there is a long line extending all the way across the courtyard, especially during the school year. Wait times can be long (30min) if they are busy. I suggest calling of texting ahead for your order that way you can just pay and pick up and skip the line! Sometimes they might be too busy to pick up the phone, so if you know you'll be there definitely try and text them before they are open (10:30-11AM) with your order. Even though it is busy it is so worth the wait!! It says a lot about the place if it's always popular! I recommend getting the bento boxes if you want a balanced meal with veggies and side dishes like tofu. I like the pork belly and the chicken bites the best. The pork belly is very tender and melts in your mouth! Chicken bites are also very flavorful. Tofu fries are also a good appetizer but they give very large portions on their meals so I usually don't get anything else. I do think however that they put a little too much rice compared to meat. I've had their boba before and it's not the greatest quality. The boba is not as fresh and flavor of the milk tea isn't very strong. I would suggest getting your boba elsewhere. The couple running the food truck are extremely nice and have always provided great service!! I love how they work so hard and still make effort to care for their customers in the midst of their business! They are always there to answer any questions you may have. So it's been 4 years since Song La has opened up their food truck and I made that first review. Over the years, I tried their other dishes and bento boxes, and all of them have been very tasty. In particular, I want to point out the braised pork rice; I make that dish myself at home, and it usually takes me 10 hours in the slow cooker, but it comes out delicious. After trying the braised pork rice today, I knew I had to write a review pronto. My roommate owed me a meal, so we went during the hottest time of the day in "feels like 108" weather for a late lunch. It was worth it. The braised pork meal here is genuinely one of the best Chinese/Taiwanese street foods that I've had, and that's including the various similar options in Houston's expansive Chinatown. For $7, you get a layer of rice, a boiled tea egg, a layer of stir-fried cabbage, AND some of the most homey braised pork you'll ever eat. The sauce from the pork drenches the rice immediately, so you're going to want to eat it ASAP for the best experience. I genuinely want to go back tomorrow for another one. You know, I thought Don (now located in the same trailer park) gave you a lot of bang for your buck, but I was somehow able to make a snack out of the leftovers from Song La. Maybe it's because we shared an order of tofu fries beforehand, which are also delicious and a must if you are a fan of tofu, or maybe the serving size is just that insane. I had been to the trailer once a few months ago actually. I tried the fried chicken bento box last time around and wasn't very impressed. The vegetables served in the "lunch box" weren't great, and while the fried chicken nuggets were good, they really didn't stand out too much from those at other places. Lastly, the owners of the truck are apparently very friendly. They know my roommate on a first name basis since he goes so often, and he says they always give him free drinks. If you're going with a friend, I would easily suggest ordering what we had today: two braised pork rice meals and an order of tofu fries to share. Unless you don't eat pork, there's really no competition between what you should be ordering here in my mind. If you're a college student and are thinking about going to Coco's or Tap House to order anything similar to what they have at Song La, I strongly insist that you reconsider. I had to take my braised pork rice dish home for dinner, but it wasn't a sad feeling, but more of hope and excitement of my next meal to come. 3. Chef Shirley hand delivered the tofu fries and sauce to our sweet group, fresh and out the frier. When she said "Careful, theyre hot!" She wasn't joking! 4. Your bear greeting us with holiday cheer is just too adorable. 5. I notice this is where all the cool UT kids come eat, so I now also feel cool and in my prime. 6. Thank you for letting me speak Chinese with you all. 7. Your selection of sodas is amazing, but I still have to go with the tapioca! 8. I've been waiting for Song La to open for months, following their updates on their Facebook page. I went first to their grand opening event at Hops and Grain and again to their permanent location at the University Co-op. Food: So far I've had their Braised Pork Rice, Tofu Fries, and Bento Box with Boba Milk Tea. I was hoping that the taste of the food would bring me back to my childhood summers in Taiwan. They did not disappoint! The cabbage and pork in the braised pork rice was cooked exactly how I remember it in Taiwan. The tofu fries were seasoned well and their special Song La sauce keeps it fun. The Bento Box is probably the best deal on the menu. The pork chop strips were super tender, and I love the inclusion of traditional sides like dried bean curd and scrambled eggs with scallions. The boba milk tea was great and the owner is happy to adjust your boba sweetness to the desired amount of sugar. Service: The husband and wife duo who run the truck are super nice! The wife takes the time to get to know the customers, which I really appreciate. She even asked me if I wanted more seasoning on my bento box while I was eating! Unfortunately I have to take one star off for now because the wait time is pretty long especially when there is a long line. I understand that it's because there's only one person is making the food fresh to order, but one of my friends was so put off by it he was hesitant about wanting to come back again. However, once Song La gets up and running and hires more people I'm going to put that last star back! Decided to check this place out because of good Yelp reviews, and I'm happy to leave a good one, too. The food is pretty good! I'm not Taiwanese, but I think it's pretty authentic. It's definitely better than Coco's and Tap House because I was able to eat real vegetables, not just meat and rice. I had the Braised Pork over Rice, and it's a solid meal. Might even last 2 meals if you're not too hungry. It comes with plenty of juicy pork, an egg, veggies, and lots of rice. I tried the boba, too, and that's where they lost a star for me. It's not horrible, and the sweetness level is perfect, but it's small for the price. If you want tap, go to Coco's. But hey, it's a solid place for a good Asian meal. You know I've been coming to this place for years. It's a food truck behind the co-op run by a mom and her son. Very friendly and welcoming; they even remember my name. I've been to Taiwan and was fortunate enough to try a bunch of Taiwanese cuisine, and for a food truck the food is actually pretty good. One item I would highly recommend is the braised pork rice. Hands down the best dish they have there. They used to offer larger portion sizes, but they started downsizing. The food still taste great though. I'd advise getting there a little earlier so that this item doesn't sell out because it always does. As for the milk tea there are better places to go to and the steamed cabbage is by far their best condiment.
