I really enjoyed this place! The food was really good, I got the scallion pancake that was fluffy, and vegan lo mein with tofu. Everything was delicious. The waiter was very helpful and honest and gave good recommendations. The vibe was really cute, they had good decor, nice seating and fun music. I had enough food for at least two meals. Definitely recommend and will be back!
Wanted to come here during the day for some cold sushi but that is only during dinner time. So we settled on cold noodles. Food was still good, would be even better if the cold noodles had beef shanks as an option instead of just tofu and chicken. The fried eggplants were good but nothing to rave about.
I really wanted this to be better. I see the reviews on Yelp. Follow their instagram. But our experience was mid at best. Late lunch on a Thursday and the place was empty. Server was nice and helpful. No sushi at lunch, at least at the time we went. We hit up a few of the standards that were recommended. I don't know , just hate to say it nothing special. I am sure others have had better times. Probably not going back.
No sushi until dinner. That was a bummer considering I wasn't in much of a mood for anything heavy or fried. We got wood ear mushrooms, cold noodles, and fried eggplant. Like their cold noodles so it was a good substitution for sushi. I didn't really touch the eggplant because I didn't want fried food, so it was all for my boyfriend
Spicy wonton was good. Other dishes like Dumpling and scallion pancake etc were okay. Will be back to try other dishes in the future. We came during dinner time and the service was slow. It took a while to get food, get a bowl or chopsticks etc. it's a good restaurant to hang out and saw some people on date night. Very relaxed vibe. Some good paintings on the wall. The decorating feels like home.
Sweet Chive has been blowing up on another platform so hard to give this a try. Came for family dinner night. Wow! This was not a disappointment!!! It's a total mom n pop small place packed full of goodness. Literally everything is made from scratch and so amazingly fresh. Thank you influencer Caroline for the hype! Starter off with the pancakes and chili vegan. Both so very tasty and fresh n hot! The chili sauce packed a punch but not overwhelming. You would not even know they were vegan at all. Let's talk about this beautiful egg! No idea how it's made but it has the most unique flavor. Normally I can pick out an herb or flavor, nope not at all. Has the most distinctive taste and so very pretty too when it arrives! All of our mains were so delicious! I had the dumplings myself but did try a bit of everyone's meals and they were all perfectly flavored. If you are wanting to have everyone's Neal come at the same time, not here. You get your food pipping hot straight from the kitchen. Which was great. No heat lamps here. Service was great. We believe the owners came out and checked on us and of course we raved. It was packed for a rainy cold Saturday night but it was warm and kind inside. Parking is limited so be prepared to find street parking. Thanks Caroline for the recommendation!!!
This restaurant serves both Taiwanese and Japanese food. We were immediately drawn to the beef noodle soup, which was a very comforting warm meal. My friend ordered the chive pocket but was then told shortly after that they were out of it. I do think most of the menu items seem like quite the small portions for a high price. The beef noodle soup was around $20 before tip. This is probably one of their dishes of better value as the portion size was sufficient. The restaurant has what I would describe as a very clean look to it. It's a nice ambience with minimalist decor. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant as well as street parking.
Stopped in here for a drink. Great service and super nice people. Loved the atmosphere. Very good drinks and not expensive. Hot saki. Good variety. Non alcoholic too.
We absolutely love the food here! Some of the best Taiwanese i've ever had. We started with the pork belly sliders and dumplings. Although we preferred the sliders, the dumplings were tasty. I had the pork noodle soup and my husband had the beef noodle soup. Truly a very tough choice to what was our favorite. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service. I can't wait to come back!
This is one of the few Taiwanese restaurants in Austin, but overall, I found it just okay. Given the limited competition, it may be worth a visit when you're really craving Taiwanese food, but I've had better versions of these dishes elsewhere--and even made some better at home. At this price point, the quality and flavors did not feel worth it to me.
On another work trip and one thing great about business trips, you can try out restaurants. I visited this restaurant because after my long drive from Houston, I was craving some dumplings. I remembered I had dumplings in Portland, OR and wanted to savor buns in my mouth with sauce to dip them in. I was ready!! The restaurant is located in Old East Austin near Juiceland. About 10 minutes from Tru Hotel near the airport. Thankfully, there was a small parking lot with tight parking spaces. When I walked inside the very cold temperature of a restaurant, I was immediately told with a smile to sit anywhere. I of course, sat at a small table as it was only me dining in. There was one other person with a child dining too, so the dining area was fairly quiet. The crowd didn't come until after 6:00 PM as I was leaving. I ordered the vegan dumplings, a winter melon drink, and a scallion pancake appetizer (vegan). The appetizer and drink came out first. The drink came out in a Shiner glass. I wasn't sure if it was alcoholic or not; so that was confusing. I don't drink alcohol anymore for health reasons. Graciously, the drink didn't give me a spike. The drink was very sweet, but refreshing. I was given a side water. I liked winter melon drink as I've never had that before, but no refills. Next time, I'll try a hot tea. The scallion pancake was very tasty. That within itself could have been a meal. I took me back to the days when I attended an Korean Christian church and at break, they served scallion pancake. I miss those days to be honest. The batter was crispy, but not gummy, but chewy. The dipping sauce was divine and within itself could have been a salty drink. Haha!! I wanted to gobble it up, but I waited until the final meal of dumplings arrived. Surprisingly, the dumpings were absolutely a stunner of deliciousness. Omg, as I was eating it, I thought to myself, these taste so much better than the dumplings I had in Portland. The dumplings at Sweet Chive was packed with so much flavor and the filling was stuffed, but not the point of falling out. The wrapper was neatly formed with slight crisp, the filling well seasoned of what appeared to be tofu and vegetables, and this dipping sauce was the same for the pancake. I honestly wanted to ask them to jar that up for me to take home. I loved my meal and so badly wanted seconds, but having recently lost 10 lbs I just couldn't chance it. I'm for sure going to add this Taiwanese restaurant to my list of favorites of Austin. Funny thing, I lived in Austin for a year and having to never visited this place, but frequently went to the Juiceland across the way. Anyways, the staff was friendly, attentive, and gave great recommendations on the winter melon drink. I'll be back once I'm in Austin again. I slept like a baby because Sweet Chive made that possible. Keep whipping up solid good food!
Came back to Sweet Chive over the weekend for a quick dinner. I said it before, and I'll say it again - the spicy chili wontons are SO good! Had to order them again. This time, I grabbed the spicy wontons, scallion pancakes, miso soup and the rainbow roll. My husband grabbed the Pancake Sliders (scallion pancakes stuffed with pork belly) and the beef dumplings. First, the miso soup comes in two different sizes - a cup and a bowl. The cup was perfect for me and probably the more standard size if you're having a hard time deciding on sizing (just fyi). Next, the Pancake Sliders were phenomenal - the pork belly was juicy and tender, and complimented the scallion pancake nicely. The fried beef dumplings were little soggy by the time I got home, but the flavor was great. (Maybe order steamed for to-go) Overall, great restaurant and look forward to coming back for brunch!
Perfect place for a hot bowl of soup on a cold day. The portions are large and the pork and beef meat are tender fatty and juicy. We personally loved the steamed beef dumplings.

Tasty spot with Taiwanese food and Sushi! We enjoyed everything we tried (in order of favorite to least favorite): Fried Chicken Pancake Slider with Pork Belly Claypot Beef Lu Ro Fan with Purple Rice (!!) Fried Kabocha But the way, that was a lot of food for 2 people even two hungry people but it as great to have the variety and try so many things on first visit and something tells me the mains will be very good tomorrow too! Service was friendly, and cool thing is that in an effort to be environmentally friendly, you get 10% off if you bring your own takeout containers! Also woman owned and operated. Definitely a very chill vibe - kind of artsy with murals/old Austin. read more

THE BIG: Taiwanese restaurant located in East Austin right off of East Cesar Chavez. Essentially a converted house with modern themes. Limited parking in the back, street parking mainly. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We came here with a few friends after enjoying Zilker botanical garden. It took us a while to get seated, even though there were barely anyone inside the store. When we got seated, it took about 10 minutes for us to get water, which was odd. For food, we got the Beef Noodle Soup, Pork Belly Noodles Soup, Lu Rou Fan, szechuan, Bon Bon Chicken, and Zhajiang Mein. All were alright and the service was very stressed even though there was no one in the restaurant. THE FINAL BAMBOO: The damage done was around $100 for everything. Flavors were alright, and service could've been better. If you're craving taiwanese and in the East Austin area, this can soothe that itch. read more

Located in east Austin, Sweet Chive is a small restaurant that serves Taiwanese and Japanese food. Note, they don't serve Japanese until 5pm! Staff is friendly, unless it gets busy, they they get pretty annoyed when you ask for something. Food comes out pretty quickly. We got the Zha Jiang Mian, Lu Rou Fan and Szechuan Bon Bon Chicken. All had light flavor, but and the noodles were cooked really well. I didn't realize the chili oil was homemade and an extra $1! There's chair and bench seating. They have a parking lot in the back and ramp/stairs to make it stroller friendly. Overall and okay spot for lunch. read more

Great value for what you get! Dumplings (6 in an order) are large with lots of filling. Lots of interesting sushi options that I will be back to try! Ordered pick-up which took around 45 mins and service was friendly when I came in. Only difficult part was parking! Very small lot and some street parking. read more
It was basically as if someone bland-ified/took out every signature spice out of every Taiwanese dish we had. So disappointed because I'd heard so many good things about this place. The service was attentive and the ambiance of the restaurant was very nice though. read more

Checked out this place around 10:30/11pm on a Sunday night since I was in need of a late, quick & cozy dinner. They close at 11:30pm on weekdays + Sun and at 1am Fri-Sat. This was definitely a spot for Taiwanese/Japanese comfort food as they quickly sat us and our food was out in the next ~20 minutes. I got the beef noodle soup (you can tell a lot about a Taiwanese place with their BNS since it is a classic staple). The noodles had a nice chew that paired well with the hot comforting broth w/ a spicy kick from the chili oil. The beef was tender and easy to pull apart. The broth was definitely on the saltier side, which the pickled greens helped cut down a bit but can still be pretty strong. The portion was reasonable for a $17 bowl, lots of noodles. The beef clay pot ($19) really stole the show. Got white rice and the rice was cooked perfectly (not too soggy, al dente) charred with a great wok hey flavor. The sauce wasn't too over bearing it was a great combo of umami & sweetness that glazed all parts of the dish from the meat, rice, to the veggies. The veggies had a great crunch to them, this sauce made me want to just eat it with more plain rice (iykyk)! Overall, their dishes stuck to the basics, no frills but nailed the flavors. I give this place a 4 whole fully bc of their amazing service too. Our waiter was attentive & explained their menu well with recommendations (they also packaged my to-go noodle soup for me, which was greatly appreciated). I would like to come back to try more of their dishes like their popular spicy chili wontons & scallion pancake sliders to give a more well-rounded review of their dishes. read more
During my work trip in Austin, I was lucky enough to stumble upon Sweet Chive via DoorDash. They had great reviews and it was honestly hard to decide what I wanted, there were some really good options. I decided to go with the Holly hood roll and the spicy chili wontons but with vegan dumplings. MY GASH!!!! These two things were incredible! I seriously loved both dishes. The spicy wontons were one of a kind, for real. The spice, the flavors, the texture. It was legit so good! This would be my first stop next time I visit Austin!! read more
This is a small and really cute place. I have been wanting to try it out for quite a while now. We went before they started serving sushi, which was a little disappointing, but looking forward to going back to try that. When you arrive, the staff is super nice and let you sit wherever sometimes they do tell you to make reservations, especially for dinner cause they can get pretty packed, especially since it's a small venue. This is a locally owned a restaurant and we got to meet the cooks which are the owners as well and they are so nice. I have to say the food was beyond delicious. We got an assortment of dumplings. My favorite were the ones in the chili oil sauce, they were to die for. We also got some kind of steak bowl with crunchy rice, which was so good. Definitely a restaurant that I will keep coming back to for happy hour and dinner . read more

Authentic modern Asian spot in East Austin. The menu has a combination of Taiwanese, Chinese, and Japanese items. For appetizers, I tried the scallion pancake ($6) and beef dumplings ($14) - they tasted made from scratch and delicious. The New Holly Roll ($21) was hands down the best sushi roll I have ever had. The salmon was buttery and soft, and the scallop was charred perfectly adding complxity to the flavor of the whole roll. I had few bites of the Wagyu Beef ($19 + $1 rice) and it was solid too. Had the greatest experience at Sweet Chive yesterday! My boyfriend and I live around the corner and have always wanted to try, so decided to go yesterday. Arriving disappointed from a different restaurant around the corner, we were happily greeted by the staff and sat down. At this point we just asked our server what she recommended and ordered. The wontons in the chili oil didn't disappoint. Also had the Lu Rou Fan which was also great. Server also recommended to use the left over chili oil on the Lu Rou Fan which we enjoyed very much. read more

We ordered Sweet Chive about an hour or so prior to them closing. I had heard wondeeful things, but the customer service and quality of the food is truly top notch. They were very kind and accommodating, the space was clean and smelled nice, and the food was wonderful. Only a star off because even though we did wait and get the food fresh, my dumplings were cold. They even have GF baklava that my friend was soooo happy to see! read more

Came by for a quick meal after hearing about it online. It was pretty late on a weekend night, but not too busy and we were able to sit immediately. The servers were super nice and helpful when we were ordering and always close by when we needed anything. I think overall the food was okay. Nothing super amazing but it was good. The scallion pancakes were a little too dense for me, personally I like them thinner and flakier. I enjoyed the cucumber noodles tho, it was super nice after a long day, like refreshing. It's a pretty casual restaurant. It felt very like a nice calm neighborhood place for families and like eating w friends. There is also parking around the back! read more

Sweet Chive serves two types of cuisines: Taiwanese and Japanese. I couldn't decide which cuisine I was in the mood for, so I decided why not try both? I opted for the Wagyu Shaken Beef, Chili Wonton Dumplings, Scallion Pancakes, Egg Drop Soup, the Geovanna roll and a Jasmine Milk Tea with boba. Regrettably, the only dish that offered some reprieve was the Chili Wonton Dumplings, which our server had suggested. The Nitty Gritty on the order: - Scallion pancakes - Batter was too thick causing this dish to be dense, when it should be flaky and crispy. - Chili Wonton Dumplings - Being generous, this dish was served at room temperature, but was the most flavorful - Jasmine Milk Tea with boba - Strong jasmine notes (which I like) but this drink was too diluted and needed more creamer - Egg Drop Soup - Incredibly bland - Wagyu Shaken Beef - Beef was dry and not enough meat for such a large bowl of rice - Geovanna roll - had potential, but the tempura crumbs served in this dish had a strange taste that dominated this roll Service: Our waitress was amazing. She was so sweet, gentle and had such a calming voice. I really wanted to like this place, but sadly, will not be returning. The food turned out to be disappointingly bland and didn't have any discernible spice or flavor. read more

I come to Sweet Chive out of convenience really. I live two blocks away. It is never busy and the orders are done quick. It is usually empty whenever I go to pick up my orders but I've never had a sit down dinner/lunch there. My go to is the cucumber noodles and the pan fried dumplings. Delicious every time. The noodles are perfectly cooked and flavorful, same with the dumplings. Other than that, everything else I've gotten from here has been quite disappointing. read more
Quick dinner stop again and service was courteous and prompt. Here's a run down of the dinner: 1. Pan fried pork dumplings - crispy and yummy 2. A couple of pieces of Ikura and a salmon skin handroll - check 3. Tea egg - yowza - pricey at $3 but they are hard to find in the US 4. Chive Pockets - delicious! 5. Lu Rou Fan - so good - minced pork has so much flavor and it comes with a tea egg for $2 and I paired it with some purple rice. read more

I ordered the chili oil wontons and the scallion pancake. The food was decent but the dumplings were lacking salt and the scallion pancakes had only a minimal amount of scallion greens in them. I would go back to try dine in to see if it was better. read more
I was excited to try this place. The service was very good and I really appreciate that they marked their menu clearly for vegan, vegetarian etc. Sadly, My husband and I found the food quite disappointing. The Jian Tofu was a tiny serving for the price $12. Based on that and the description of the dish I thought it would be a bold tasting and interesting dish. We both felt like it was just 2 bites of fried tofu with some Chinese greens and shitake on top and a fairly simple sauce. Neither of us detected much of Yozu flavor or a particularly interesting flavor. We also tried 2 items from the cold sampler. First we tried the wood ear mushroom fungus salad which we often order when we go to Authentic non-Americanized Chinese restaurants. This dish that we often love tasted really bland here, basically just like white vinegar. I didn't taste any chinese black vinegar, sesame oil and any umami flavor-- really just tasted like wood ear mushrooms in white vinegar. We also tried the Szechuan Fermented Veggie Medley that was again just pickled veggies in vinegar. The very nice waitress recommended the dumplings but we didn't want to try more. read more
